REVIEW: ‘Outer Range’ is a Must-Watch

There’s something immensely scary about the unknown. We’re seeing the resurgence of projects further exploring that concept more and more, especially taking inspiration from Lovecraft’s famous stories. After Lovecraft Country‘s cancellation, I’ve been hopeful that a new series would come around to offer that same feeling. Luckily, Amazon Prime’s Outer Range manages to not only scratch that itch, but even tell a compelling family drama as things start to unfold in the small range of the Abbott family in Wyoming.

I have to say, I am immensely impressed that this series is Brian Watkins’ first. There’s something very meticulous about its pacing, as we follow Josh Brolin‘s Royal Abbott, as his life starts to unravel around him. The moment he discovers a strange hole in the middle of his field, one that seems beyond our own comprehension, everything around him slowly starts to unravel. He is a man that seemingly has everything in control and does anything for his family, yet someone who has his own secrets to hold. Events throughout the series runtime will push him beyond his breaking point, as he tries to make sense of it all.

The project has an all-star cast with Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots, and Tom Pelphrey being the standouts. Even saying that there’s no weak link in this cast as everyone is seemingly giving it their A-game throughout. Even some crazier characters like Noah Reid‘s Billy Tillerson are designed to fill their role. Brolin is still the man carrying the entire series, and the former Thanos actor truly carries every scene he is in. There’s this amazing subtlety in his performance, as he tries not to let a single weakness break out. It adds to a lot of the tension throughout that the series aims to build.

Speaking of, it would be a disservice to give away any plot points. While it doesn’t make my job reviewing it any easier, I believe it needs to be seen without giving away any of the major plot points throughout. There are a lot of curious twists and turns in this series that not always are connected to the main void, which is heavily teased in the promotional material for this series. Amazon describes it as “genre-bending” and I can definitely agree that remaining vague with this series was the best way to promote it. In a way, the series feels like a more restrained version of Lost.

There are some beautifully done shots throughout, which really highlighted the themes and sometimes dread of being lost in the middle of nowhere. The rancher backdrop works in the show’s favor beautifully and adds a special flair that you wouldn’t normally see in this kind of story. The open fields create that illusion of just how small and insignificant we are in the bigger picture. Subtle camera tilts and the right shot composition can make something as simple as a hole in the ground feel eery and endless. There are many shots and moments that still stick with me to this day.

Of course, the right sound design can truly bring the ambiance together for such a story. In a way, it might even be the strongest element in this story. You know you’re watching something special if moments are punctuated through its audio design. The show knows exactly when to amp up its music to keep you on your toes. There were moments when I had shivers when the music hit just right throughout my time with the series. It’s one of those soundtracks that you’ll listen to even after you finished your watch, as it just conveys a certain feeling.

Not everything is perfect, as there are moments where the story drags a bit and there’s a lot of exposition throughout. Yet, it ironically also kind of works to the series’ benefit given the way it continues to build up the tension once those moments come back into play. Still, there are times when you do wish it got back to the juicy part of the series. Just highlights how difficult it is to talk about the series without spoiling anything, but there is a lot of set-up at play here. I cannot recommend the series enough, especially if you’ve been looking for something to scratch that same itch as Lost, Annihilation, Lovecraft Country, and similar projects.

  • Disney+’s ‘Willow’ Series Adds ‘Game of Thrones’ Rosabell Laurenti Sellers

Disney+’s ‘Willow’ Series Adds ‘Game of Thrones’ Rosabell Laurenti Sellers

We haven’t heard much on Disney+’s upcoming series Willow. Lucasfilm is reviving the 1980 fantasy classic and has assembled quite the cast. The story will feature a princess that assembles a group of heroes to help her rescue her twin brother. Warwick Davis returns in the iconic role and will be joined by Tony Revolori, Amer Chadha-Patel, Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, and Erin Kellyman. Now, it seems that they are joining another fantasy alum in the form of Game of ThronesRosabell Laurenti Sellers.

Not much is stated about her character besides the statement that she’ll play someone who is a “resourceful character with shape, acerbic wit.” The actress made her big splash playing Tyene Sand on the HBO series. She also appeared on Mia and Me, Spides, and joined John Travolta in the drama Trading Point. She’s also set to appear in What About Love, where she’ll star opposite Sharon Stone and Andy Garcia.

It’s great to see Disney+ revive some cult classics by also giving them a new life. It’ll be interesting to see if they’ll include any callbacks to the original Willow outside of it being a direct continuation. We got a tease during Disney+ Day that was mostly just from the staff while Warwick roasted the younger cast members. It was a great tease as they just started production at the time.

  • Maisie Williams on a Potential Return as Arya Stark in a ‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff

Maisie Williams on a Potential Return as Arya Stark in a ‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff

HBO and WarnerMedia have been ambitious with their expansion of the Game of Thrones franchise. Later this year, we’ll see the release of House of the Dragons, which explores the time the Targaryen ruled over Westeros long before the Mad King’s fall would lead to all-out war across the country. O course, that isn’t the only project that’s in the pipeline, as they hope to build an entire franchise built around the many eras of these book series.

Now, it seems that one of the stars of the original Game of Thrones, Maisie Williams, has shared her thoughts in an interview with CQ on potentially returning to the franchise as Arya Stark. While some may want to leave it behind, it seems that she’d be quite open to returning but there’s a catch.

I’m not saying it would never happen, but I’m also not saying it in this interview so that everyone goes… [gasps] ‘The spin-off! It’s coming!’ Because it’s not. It has to be the right time and the right people. It has to be right in the context of all the other spin-offs and the universe of Game of Thrones. […] It has to be the right time for me.

    Maisie Williams

You can see her experience with these kinds of inquiries, as she’s not confirming anything, but wants to share her thoughts on a potential return. If someone pitches her the right concept, it seems she’d welcome it with open arms to once again return to the franchise and continue Arya Stark’s tower.

  • Tim Roth Has High Praise for ‘She-Hulk’s Tatiana Maslany is “Jaw-Dropping” in the Disney+ Series

Tim Roth Has High Praise for ‘She-Hulk’s Tatiana Maslany is “Jaw-Dropping” in the Disney+ Series

It’s been a quiet day, but a new interview from ET Canada has found its way online. In it, Tim Roth gets to share some aspects of his work on the upcoming Disney+ series, She-Hulk. As he gets a chance to return as Abomination once again, he shared his thoughts on the upcoming series. Yet, he had some high praise for fellow co-star Tatiana Maslany, who he describes as “amazing” and “jaw-dropping.”

She’s amazing. It’s actually jaw-dropping. I was just watching on a day-to-day level. Sometimes dialogue lands just on that level […]. Her ability to absorb and then perform was quite remarkable. And she’s funny. One of the signs of a good actor is their comedic touch and she has it in spades.

    Tim Roth

It certainly sounds promising, and as she’ll become a big player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward, she may become an anchor of the franchise. It’s exciting to generally see what she has to offer and given the series’ comedic direction, it does seem promising if he highlights her “comedic touch.”

We’re still anxiously waiting for a trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder but it’ll also be quite exciting to see what She-Hulk’s first trailer might have to offer. We’ll likely not see anything until around the time that Ms. Marvel releases, but it’s going to be exciting once we get our first glimpses of the new series.

  • First Look at New Comic-Inspired ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Promo Art

First Look at New Comic-Inspired ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Promo Art

Thor: Love and Thunder’s trailer is still nowhere to be seen, but we’re still getting a few glimpses of the film from some promo art and merchandise that is finding its way online. So, we may still have to wait a little longer for some actual footage, but @lovethundernews has uncovered some more promotional material for the film with a comic-inspired cover that features Thor alongside Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor.

They aren’t alone, as the comic cover also includes Valkyrie and Korg. We even get a tease of Thor’s two goats that behind-the-scenes set photos revealed would be joining the upcoming production. It certainly looks like we’ll get to spend some time with Tanngrisnir and Tanngrnjostr in the upcoming film if they are heavily featured in the promotional material.

For now, the merchandise is the only thing carrying us over until we actually get our first look of both in action. Gorr is noticeably absent from all merchandise, which means they are mainly focusing on the heroes for most of the promotional material. Of course, he was included in the Marvel Legends leak but that was our only real look at him so far.

Still, it’s a great design and comic-inspired designs were always a great addition to merchandise. It’s great to see Korg get a stronger focus, as he was a stand-out character in Thor: Ragnarok. We’ll see if he has a bigger role in the upcoming film and how his life has been since King Valkyrie took over.

  • ‘Isle of the Dead’ Spinoff is One of Many Pitched Maggie and Negan Spinoffs

‘Isle of the Dead’ Spinoff is One of Many Pitched Maggie and Negan Spinoffs

The Walking Dead continues to grow its potential with various new spinoff series in some form of production. There’s an anthology series on its way titled The Tales of the Walking Dead, and we also got the confirmation of one titled Isle of the Dead. This series caught everyone by surprise as it’ll focus on Lauren Cohan‘s Maggie joining forces with Jeffrey Dean Morgan‘s Negan.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Cohan reveals that they went through quite a few ideas before they landed on the current version. It seems that they definitely wanted to further explore the dynamic between Maggie and Negan, which has certainly changed since Morgan joined the show in quite a memorable introduction.

I know there have always been three, maybe four options for how Maggie would end up in a spinoff. For Maggie or Negan there’s been a bunch of ideas floating around. I think this story that Eli Jorne came up with, which is what we’ll be shooting for season one of Isle of the Dead, was just really powerful and such an interesting way for fans to get to see these characters continue.

    Lauren Cohan

The spinoff will explore the two characters exploring what is left of Manhattan, as it became cut off from the mainland and is now filled with a horde of Walkers. It’ll be interesting to see what exactly leads them to explore Manhattan and how they end up surviving a horde of Walkers that are just waiting for some fresh meat.

  • ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Michelle Yeoh Heading to ‘Avatar’s Pandora Next

‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Michelle Yeoh Heading to ‘Avatar’s Pandora Next

Michelle Yeoh has been busy. Not only did she make quite the splash with the new indie hit Everything Everywhere All at Once, but she’ll also soon arrive in Pandora, as she has joined James Cameron‘s Avatar franchise. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Crazy Rich Asian actress not only confirmed she’ll appear in the upcoming sequel but it seems she might have a recurring role. As many knows, while we haven’t seen an entry in the franchise since 2009, 20th Century Fox mapped out multiple seasons long before the Disney purchase.

Still, Disney has been quite excited about the potential of the highest-grossing film of all time, which only temporarily was taken over by Avengers: Endgame. They further supported Cameron’s vision, who has since continued work on multiple films. Yeoh shared her enthusiasm for having the chance to work with him:

So, yes, I am in the Avatar sequels and as you know we can’t really talk very much about it. But it’s James Cameron! Come on! I would be the tea lady for James Cameron! We shot for a few weeks, and I was so impressed with the work that he’s done, the work that he’s doing, the energy. He’s a genius, he’s a walking genius. And I really really enjoyed the experience and I can’t wait to go back soon, I hope.

    Michelle Yeoh

It certainly sounds like she’s all on board for the project and it’s always great when a talent believes in the vision of the director. It seems like she’ll have a small role, as she only shot for a few weeks, but they may build up her role moving forward. There’s a lot of potential with the sequels, as we further explore Pandora and the many parts that make the mysterious planet so fascinating as it did back in 2009.

  • 20th Century Studios’ ‘The Princess’ Heading to Disney’s Streaming Services in July

20th Century Studios’ ‘The Princess’ Heading to Disney’s Streaming Services in July

It looks like Disney is continuing to build its 20th Century brand as a way to produce films and offerings for their streaming services. It has been announced that The Princess will premiere globally on July 1st. It’ll be made available under the Star banner in specific locations, its US release will be through Hulu and Star+ in Latin America. Le-Van Kiet of Furie fame is in the directing chair with The Kissing Booth‘s Joey King taking on the titular role.

The story focuses on a strong-willed princess that does not want to be forcefully married to a sociopath. Yet, as retaliation, her father locks her up in a remote tower of his castle. As you might expect, her suitor has his own plans to take the throne and she’s forced to protect her family and the kingdom. King is joined by Dominic Cooper, Olga Kurylenko, and Veronica Ngo. Kiet is working off of a script from Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton with Neal H. Moritz, Toby Jaffe, and Derek Kolstad in the producing chair.

It’s another 20th Century production that ended up as part of their streaming service repertoire, similar to No Exit recently. With the cinemas being filled with mostly well-known IPs, it’s unclear if this will be Disney’s overall strategy moving forward or if they’ll also give these smaller productions a chance in theaters. It would be a shame that after purchasing 20th Century Fox that most of their originals end up only as streaming services.

  • ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Future Unclear After ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’

‘Fantastic Beasts’ Future Unclear After ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’

Finally, the third entry of the Fantastic Beasts franchise is making its way to cinemas. The Harry Potter spinoff, however, has been fighting an uphill battle as an onslaught of controversies may have ended up completely derailing the franchise’s future. What was originally envisioned as the third in five entries could end up becoming its final entry if its box office doesn’t prove to be what Warner Bros. was hoping to see with this franchise. In a new piece by Variety, it is revealed that the fourth entry hasn’t started work on its screenplay for the untitled fourth entry.

Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock referenced that this franchise was meant to be “their Star Wars franchise” but hasn’t been “behaving like one.” The second entry, The Crime of Grindelwald, was received poorly and ended up leading to the third entry getting postponed. COVID didn’t help matters, as it was further pushed back. Then the various controversies started piling on, such as Johnny Depp leaving the franchise due to the various allegations by Amber Heard. As production started, he was swiftly replaced by Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen.

Yet, that wasn’t all, as the creator of J.K. Rowling, who also worked on the screenplays of these films, was becoming quite the polarizing figure online due to her controversial views on sex and gender. Ann Sarnoff, who supervised the Wizard World franchise, recently also left ahead of the Discovery merger. Now, Ezra Miller has also been hit with various disorderly conduct and harassment suits, which continue to pile onto the controversy pile. The recent announcement that LGBTQ references were cut from The Secrets of Dumbledore for its Chinese release may just be the icing on the cake of controversies at this point. As it stands, it’s unclear what the future has in store for the Wizard World and if the Fantastic Beasts franchise will continue at all.

  • LGBTQ References Cut from ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ for Chinese Release

LGBTQ References Cut from ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ for Chinese Release

There’s been quite the controversy surrounding the way film production studios have handled their international releases. As China remains a strong supporter of the international box office gross–even if recent numbers have been adding some questions regarding its profitability–studios have adapted their films for a release in the Middle Kingdom. Of course, they have very strict guidelines and only allow a certain amount of films into the country. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore was among the lucky candidates, but it looks like it came at a cost.

Warner Bros. has cut the LGBTQ references in its film so that it can release the film in China. While supposedly they only cut six seconds of dialogue, which includes the lines “because I was in love with you” and “the summer Gellert and I fell in love.” Fantastic Beasts didn’t make a secret of the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, but it seems the studio still decided to move forward with adopting the film for that release. Warner Bros. has released a statement on their decision:

As a studio, we’re committed to safeguarding the integrity of every film we release, and that extends to circumstances that necessitate making nuanced cuts in order to respond sensitively to a variety of in-market factors. Our hope is to release our features worldwide as released by their creators but historically we have faced small edits made in local markets.

There have been many accusations of studios deliberately keeping LGBTQ references to a minimum so that they are easy to edit out for specific markets, which forbid it. Some films have stood by their productions, such as Marvel Studio’s sticking to its guns to not adapting their release of Eternals, which has an openly gay character, to stay true to the story and its director’s vision. Yet, Disney has also been in the spotlight for censoring or generally pushing back on LGBTQ elements planned for Pixar releases. In the case of Fantastic Beasts, Warner Bros. moved ahead with the adaptation but the film ended up opening at a lower box office in the market than its two predecessors.
