Denis Villeneuve has been on everyone’s radar. His work on Arrival transported us into a very unique take on a close encounter of the third kind. Black Runner 2049 was a personal standout with the return to the futuristic Los Angeles and the return of Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard. Now, we are all anxiously waiting for his take on the iconic franchise Dune. Rumors started bubbling that we would finally get our first look at the film on September 9th. Looks like Inside The Film Room may have gotten an early description of the trailer.
According to them, it will be around 1 minute and 37 seconds long. They confirm that WB and Legendary will have their logos adapted in the style of the film’s gold-black aesthetic. The start focuses on the Gom Jabbar test. In Frank Herbert’s original novel, this was used to test one’s humanity. In layman’s terms, they used a poisoned needle to see if someone would stay calm or react out of instinct. Timothée Chalament‘s Paul Atreides undergoes this test by placing a hand in a box. Charlotte Rampling appears in a regal black gown and pushes the needle into his neck. If he pulls his hand out of the box, he has failed the test. This sequence also briefly cuts to shots of the deserts of Arrakis and the various cast members.
An aircraft opens to reveal Oscar Isaac, who was teased in previous official photos, Rebecca Ferguson and Jason Momoa. Here we are also introduced to Javier Bardem’s Stilgar and Zendaya‘s Chani. She will be climbing rocks with a group of Fremen, who are considered savages by the Imperium of this world.
They also tease appearances by Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, and Dave Bautista. He plays Glossu Rabban Harkonnen, who is described as if he was painted white and covered in dust. Also, a character emerging from a tub full of liquid that might be Stellan Skarsgård‘s character. It all builds up to the moment we see Paul among the Fremen. This is then followed by the Dune logo alongside a track that combines drums with synth music.
Now, we just got a little bonus as some visuals have leaked of the cast that confirms the visuals teased about the characters. Check them out here:
Now that sounds quite exciting. Villeneuve always had a way of making iconic visuals, so that is something I cannot wait to see. They do describe that the environments look stunning. The Gom Jabbar test is held in a circular room carved with beautiful decorations. They describe the endless desert as a beautiful and bright yellow river. It’s all quite exciting and cannot wait to dive into this new world once the trailer is released online.
Kamala Khan is slowly coming into the spotlight. She was first introduced in 2014 in Captain Marvel #14. She got her own series that focused on her struggles balancing her life as a Pakistani American and an Inhuman. She idolizes Captain Marvel and takes over her former mantle as Ms. Marvel. It’s a story that found a lot of appeal in the market, especially with her being the first real Muslim to headline her own comic.
She has seen a spike in popularity after appearing in Marvel Rising series. Kathreen Kavari voice the character in this series and many others, which include Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble, and Marvel Future Avengers. Now, she will also headline her own MCU series on Disney+ and will be playable in Marvel’s Avengers. Actress Sandra Saad performed the mo-capture for the character and voices her. In an interview with GameSpot, she talked about taking on the role of the freshly initiated Avenger. The biggest challenge was how to play someone who can embiggen.
I think I just did whatever I wanted. There was a lot of like, ‘Hey, what do you think it feels like to embiggen? Do that.’ And thankfully it worked out. Crystal Dynamics does a really good job of showing me the abilities and showing me the stuff that they’ve come up with. And that really helps inform what the movements are supposed to be. There’s only so much a human of my actual size can do, but I try.
She also discussed what is in store for Kamala in the story. Even the Beta teased that she and Hulk will share quite a few moments. Seems like we can expect a lot of emotional moments once we get our hands on the full game.
I’m not going to give anything away, but she does have special moments with everyone because it’s an Avengers story. It’s not just the Hulk and Kamala story. She relates to all of them just from her own abilities. And just from knowing everyone’s abilities already, you can see how they all relate to her as her heroes. But the Hulk, as you know, he’s a monster who has this thing about him that he can’t really control and Kamala does, too. She has this new power and she’s like, ‘What do I do with it? Is this weird? How do I even use it? Do I use it for good? Is this a disease? What is it?’ And so in that way, you can see that they both have a lot of similarities.
Saad has already given us a great interpretation going by the Beta experience. She gives Kamala a lot of energy, as she tries to reassemble the Avengers. There is a moment in the Beta where she finds old gear from the team and her inner fan leaking out was quite the joy to see. We are only over a week away from the game’s official release. Just recently it was revealed that we will get one more War Table that will tease the post-launch content. Let’s see what the future holds for Kamala and the Avengers.
Never did I think composing a haiku would be my favorite thing to do in a game. I guess that is just part of the charm when I got to play Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch created an open-world game set during Edo Japan. On the island of Tsushima, samurai Jin Sakai faces down the Mongrol army. This war takes a toll on Jin as he starts being changed by the tide of war. Looks like that concept was quite enticing. The game has officially become PlayStation’s fastest-selling exclusive IP on the PS Store. It has managed to sell 1.9M digital units in July alone.
To put this in comparison, Horizon Zero Dawn held the title until now. It had the same amount of virtual sales within two months. Sony exclusive Days Gone also needed two months to pass 1.3 million in digital sales. As of now, Ghost of Tsushima is also the biggest digital release for July. The Last of Us Part II also broke that record for June.
Summer is normally a quiet season for game sales but the current pandemic has changed that. Nintendo is also seeing quite the success this year with Animal Crossing: New Horizons at 5M and Pokémon Sword and Shield at 2.7M. Their latest release Paper Mario: The Origami King did beat out last year’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses with 555K digital sales. It has been a major year for the gaming industry and we’ll see if more records will be broken as the year goes on.
Connecting Imaginary Dots are pieces we write here that allow us to be what we all truly are: fans. These should not be taken as scoops, exclusives or facts; just speculation about the things for which we all share a great passion.
The Batman already looks amazing. Not going to lie, I have probably watched that trailer way too many times by now. We’ve had so many different incarnations of Batman in film. Michael Keaton explored the character in a Gothic world. Christian Bale brought him into the modern era and politics. Ben Affleck showed us that a man can stand among giants. Now, it is Robert Pattinson‘s turn to show us another side of the Bat we had yet to explore. How about we dive in and see what little clues this trailer is hiding from us. Let’s highlight what this trailer may be telling us about this new world and the story it might tell.
Oh, what an opening this is. The sound of duct-tape being ripped is familiar but not when it means to silence a person. Well, killing him is actually a better choice of words here. His victim seems to be the Mayor of Gotham going by the newspaper clippings. Yes, we start this story with our look at the main antagonist, Paul Dano‘s Riddler. He is quite a departure from the character we know but the iconic green is still present. He deliberately is sending messages to Batman. A green envelope attached to the silenced politician starts off the investigation. At one point, he lets a man strapped with a bomb drive into a funeral. Pattinson‘s Bruce Wayne is present so it creates the illusion he might know is behind the cape and cowl. This is mainly because of the following quote from the trailer:
“You are a part of this too.”
This question seems to be directed at Bruce Wayne in the trailer. There is a chance this is just a red herring, as the timing of the quote shows us Bruce unmasking. Kuddos that this is the first version where he doesn’t magically lose his eye paint. Something about this quote is interesting, as it alludes to some bigger picture. We know that director Matt Reeves has planned an entire trilogy. As such, he can already set some important story elements early on. We know that A Long Halloween arc will also be an inspiration. There are small glimpses of John Turturro’s Carmine Falcone in the newspapers. Reeves even discusses in the DC FanDome panel that they will uncover a much deeper level of corruption. His second quote around the halfway point does hint at this more.
“If you are justice, please do not lie. What is the price for your blind eye?”
Reeves is already working on a mini-series that will explore Gotham P.D. during Year One of Batman. He once again pointed out that the corruption of the police force will play a major role in that show’s story. We even get a glimpse at it in this trailer, as we see Batman escaping from a group of cops with his grappling hook. As he dives deeper into the mystery, he might stumble upon something he wasn’t meant to find. At the beginning of the trailer, we see the police work alongside him so something must’ve happened to make them turn. The short snippet of Batman surrounded by cops may have kickstarted the manhunt.
There is one aspect of the story that is subtle but might hint at why this all connects back to Bruce Wayne. A major emphasis was put on this versions’ bat symbol. It looks to be made from the gun that killed Thomas and Martha Wayne. He carries the guilt around with him wherever he goes. It seems like just a nice little touch but it could become an important emotional element for his character. If the corruption was spread throughout the city, his family would’ve been involved as well in some way. Any sane person would start to question if his family had kept secrets from him before their death. What kind of secret could that be? Well, maybe Riddler’s greeting card already teased it.
I do not think the Court of Owls will be introduced in this first installment though. They might be hinted at throughout but the focus will be on Riddler unraveling Gotham’s system. The actions of this story will unravel Batman’s journey deeper down into Gotham’s history. Reeves is exploring the detective aspect of the character. Slowly uncovering the influences of a shady organization that has existed since the 1600s seems like a perfect fit. The only missing riddle is what connection does Edward Nashton have to the bigger picture.
So, how do Catwoman and Cobblepot play into the story? Let’s start off with the more obvious connection, Zoe Kravits’ Selina Kyle. Most likely, she ends up getting entangled after stealing an important item from the victim’s apartment. We see the warning tape as she is trying to break into a safe. Her involvement isn’t necessarily deliberate. She just ends up getting dragged into the bigger picture. As Batman still operates alone, she might become an unlikely ally throughout the film. This is just the start of their relationship that will develop throughout the trilogies’ overarching story.
Alright, let’s talk about the Penguin. First off, I still cannot believe that was Colin Farrell. What an amazing makeup job they did. Either way, we are here to discuss his role in the bigger picture. Once again, Reeves confirmed that a lot of the villains in this film aren’t fully formed. Oswald is still working his way up the ladder before cementing his role as a mob boss. This actually might be the reason he is in this film. As he rises through the ranks in this film, we get introduced to how deep the corruption is in the city. Cobblepot simply becomes an unknowing pawn throughout the trilogy. Maybe we get a Batman Returns tribute as he runs for mayor at one point. Have to replace the one lost at the beginning of this one. Well see how deep the rabbit hole goes once TheBatman releases October 1st, 2021.
Here’s a nice surprise. Marvel’s Avengers Beta has officially come to an end. All that is left is for the game is the official launch on September 4th. We were teased that a new War Table might be heading our way shortly before release. Sadly, we didn’t have any news when it would release. Also, what exactly we could expect from it. My personal hopes were to see some kind of tease of what post-launch content they have planned. Looks like my pleas have been heard, as a newsletter sent out via email confirmed that we will get the next War Table on September 1st with some major reveals.
Join us for our special launch edition of Marvel's Avengers WAR TABLE, debuting on September 1 at 10:00 AM PT! Believe us, you won't want to miss this one.
The newsletter confirms some Day One reveals for the launch. Quite curious about what the progression system is that they reference here. Either way, what sticks out is the confirmation of our first look at the post-launch “season” titled Avengers Initiative. This was already teased during the Hawkeye reveal last month. We know that each character has their own story missions. I believe that they purposely call it a post-launch content season as it will be something unique from those character-specific missions. They also will unveil an additional post-launch playable hero. My best guess is that this character will be one of the clone characters like War Machine or She-Hulk that were leaked a few weeks back.
Mad Max: Fury Road came out five years ago. George Miller returned to the franchise he started back in 1979. After spending a few decades with children-friendly films like Babe or Happy Feet. His return gave us an amazing R-rated look at the sandy apocalypse and introduced us to an iconic badass, Furiosa. Miller then started becoming vocal about wanting to explore her backstory. That was a surprise, as we thought they would continue the story after Max left Charlize Theron‘s Furiosa at the end of Fury Road. Still, a sequel sounds interesting as it also gives us a chance to find out more about her first meeting with Immortan Joe.
Casting is already underway for the film, as Illuminerdi got their hands on the following character description:
[DEMENTUS]
Lead Male (30 – 40)
He is breathtakingly handsome. An angel’s face, scarred by a
deep forehead wound stitched together with shiny chrome
staples.
Warner Bros. is currently interested in hiring Chris Hemsworth in the lead role. The description is quite interesting. The mentioning of a deep scar across the forehead is rather interesting. There probably is some kind of backstory they will explore where he got that wound. It will be interesting to see if this character even survives, as there isn’t anyone that would fit his description in Fury Road. No matter what direction they go, I cannot wait to see what they’ll do with this story. Hopefully, they will bring back the amazing visuals that made the last film stand out. I cannot wait to return to the wasteland once again.
No, you read that right. CW has started development on a brand new live-action series based on the popular Cartoon Network show Powerpuff Girls. It will be another Berlanti Production with Diablo Cody, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden as executive producers. Berlanti is well-known for his work on You, Riverdale, Dawson’s Creek, and the Arrowverse shows. They are certainly no strangers to CW and this seems to be in their wheelhouse.
According to Variety, the show will focus on the titular characters in their 20s. They have drifted apart and are resentful for wasting their childhood fighting crime. So, we can expect a lot of teen angst throughout the series with plenty of drama. We can probably expect something in the vein of CW’s Riverdale meets The Flash.
Of all series to adapt, this is a strange one. It just recently received a remake that was met with mixed reviews. The designs are also unique, so it’s a show that won’t be easy to translate into live-action. CW had quite the success with their darker adaptations of classic IPs. Yet, I am just having a hard time wrapping my head around this concept. Even as they faced some darker foes like HIM, it still was more comedy driven. Perhaps this version will tie-in to the Gorillaz, as Ace from the Gangreen Gang temporarily became their drummer. At the end of the day, I am quite curious about how they’re going to attempt this adaptation. We’ll have to wait and see what they cook up with Chemical X.
Ridley Scott really loves exploring outer space and our relationship with androids. The famous director behind The Martianand Alien joined up with Prisoners‘ Aaron Guzikowski for a brand new science-fiction story. The original HBO Max series Raised by Wolves tells the story of two androids named Father and Mother. they were tasked to raise human children on a foreign planet after earth was destroyed. They are then hunted down by a colony of humans that want to take the children back. IGN got an exclusive first look at the series and shared the trailer online to show just how violent it will get.
We've got an exclusive first look at the new trailer for HBO Max's sci-fi epic Raised By Wolves, premiering September 3. pic.twitter.com/14k2wKUDdS
Some might have recognized Vikings’Travis Fimmel as the human leader. Not much is known about the series yet but the trailer does seem quite promising. Seems like there is more to Mother than meets the eye. Her violent tendencies seem to grow as the trailer goes by. Especially the hallway scene seemed rather reminiscent of the anime Elfen Lied. Funny enough, Fan4stic tried to do something similar with Doom after he takes down guards.
There are a lot of interesting visuals throughout the trailer for Raised by Wolves. At first it seemed like they gave birth to the humans, so I was surprised when they revealed that they were androids. A major part of this story will explore the impacts of religion which is rushed through a bit. Quite curious how they will try to explore this aspect. This isn’t the first time a robot raising a human was the focus of a TV series or film. Just last year the film I AM MOTHER on Netflix explored a similar relationship. It’s a curious concept that I am glad is getting more attention. I cannot wait to check it out when it releases September 3rd.
Sometimes the industry reveals a game that you just don’t know how to feel about. It’s the kind you hear about but never really follow. You start thinking about playing it but you’d rather save up money for the next big release. Then one day, you just end up giving it a try because you heard some great reviews. I had that experience with Middle-Earth: Shadow ofMordor.
While I did love the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy, I would not call myself a die-hard fan of the franchise. What I love about it is the lore and mythology that J. R. R. Tolkien created. This game had such a unique system that I still adore it to this day. It was one of the biggest surprises for me when I decided to buy it. I couldn’t wait to see what else they have planned after Middle-Earth: Shadow of War was released. Well, I didn’t expect a game about Gollum. We even got a short teaser for the upcoming project.
It is a very brief trailer that teases the side of Middle Earth we will explore as the titular Gollum. All we know is that it will be a stealth-action game. Makes absolute sense, as Gollum won’t be running around taking down Orcs with a sword. It is a nice touch to show Mount Doom in the distance, as Gollum sets out for this journey. I am once again unsure of how to feel about this game. Yet, that is mostly due to the lack of gameplay to get a feeling for how we control the iconic character. Also, I wonder if they will get Andy Serkis to reprise his role from the films.
I’ll start this off by saying that I am excited for the full release of Marvel’s Avengers. I had a blast playing the Beta for three weekends. Sunk about 20+ hours into this version alone. This is more than I have put into other games and still waiting for the actual release. There still was something about this game I just wanted to explore. To some degree, it’s been talked about since the initial announcement. I am not here to discuss people’s preferences. Everyone has their own opinion This article is also not to bash the game itself. What I want to talk about what I believe was Avengers’ biggest misstep. The game mismanaged its marketing that it created an A-Day problem.
When the game was initially revealed, I became cautiously optimistic. The way they tried to sell this game was that it would continuously expand. You buy the game once and every expansion is for free. I have experience with Destiny that tried something similar. Just lost interest as I had to pay extra for each additional season. The fact that this isn’t the case here had my attention. It makes its profit off of additional costumes or trinkets that you can buy through a market place. So, it is up to you to spend money on the game if you really want a specific look.
That did make some people quite nervous. The timing was terrible for this announcement. Anthem and Fallout 76 had performed terribly in their release with the same promise. It took them years to get to that point they promised but lost many players along the way. Its main focus on multiplayer made the actual content feel rushed even when it worked. Now, everyone feared the same for Avengers.
Our first experience with the game was a story trailer. Taskmaster attacks the Avengers on A-Day. We get a glimpse of gameplay as they fight on the Golden Gate bridge. At the time, we had no idea about Kamala Khan being playable as she narrates the trailer. There were small glimpses of other story missions but it primarily focused on the opening act. This was our inciting incident for the story that kickstarts a global adventure. Still, these glimpses didn’t tell us much about what kind of game or story we can expect.
To be fair, neither did the original 2016 reveal trailer for Spider-Man. That just teased some confrontations but purely focused on the titular character in costume. What Insomniac did nail was the true turning point of hype for the game. At E3 2017, they didn’t just give us another trailer but a total of 8-minutes of gameplay. It was a mission set during the game rather than just the opening. Plus, we only see one singular character’s face model, which was Martin Li. After recently playing both games back-to-back, I noticed similarities between their models. Most notably, how the hair is designed. It wouldn’t be surprising that they are working from the same engine.
Either way, back to Avengers. Crystal Dynamics ended their E3 panel with the announcement that there will be more content post-launch. The thought of additional heroes and maps for free is a great selling point. The only issues are that players were jaded by past experiences with such promises. Worst of all, they didn’t say what these expansions meant for the game. Is it an unfinished story that keeps expanding? Would each expansion add a new main threat? There was no transparency about what additional content would mean. Especially as they barely showed the base game. What could’ve been a selling point became a promise for more. It was that fact that got people nervous and it made people question the game from the start.
Okay, that isn’t quite fair. We did get a massive 19-minute demo of A-Day. This gave us a look at how the core Avengers played. It was rough around the edges but it looked promising. My only gripe was that the HUD seemed to lack personality. At the time, a lot of people were asking for more characters. They never revealed anything as people shouted for Hawkeye but demand was there. What was important was to build on this momentum towards the April release. Well, that’s how it should’ve been.
The original release date of May got delayed until September. More time meant they could polish the game. The only thing they really revealed was that Ms. Marvel was a playable character. Each trailer continued to just tease brief glimpses of actual gameplay. It only showed you in missions running around and beating up minions. In a way, it was the marketing that started the feeling of “repetitive” long before we got to play it. What was revealed about the story? A-Day of course, repeating mostly what we’ve already seen with some snippets of the aftermath. Whoever was already skeptical just felt justified based on the lack of content presented.
What’s worse, it created a feeling that they weren’t at a point to show much more. Most notably, nothing was revealed for how multiplayer worked. The question would arise about how would it balance a single-player? They made promises of years worth of content. Yet, it seems that they are embarrassed to show more of the base game. It felt like the only true story mission is A-Day with maybe some scenarios here and there. Most of the game would be multiplayer which added to the fear of repetition. The game barely showed anything and that first impression has cemented. Some believed it just focused on single-player it would’ve been better. Just like I did, comparisons to Spider-Man are inevitable.
There was a turning point though. The first marketing push that went beyond A-Day was the first War Table in June. That means since it’s announcement back in September 2019, it took them around 10 months before we got anything substantial about what exactly Avengers is. One could point out that the pandemic didn’t help matters. Still, there were only. a few months left until launch day. Personally, the June War Table was what sold me initially on the game. It was my jumping on point so I believe it was a great direction. Especially with the promise of consistent updates through this format.
It finally revealed how the game plays. We got a feeling for the customization options and what mission types will be included. Crystal Dynamics also used comic panels as a reference to show their research. This was a great touch to show they paid attention. I loved that the gear has different effects from comic history, like Pym Particles to shrink enemies. Yes, it would’ve been nice if there were actual visual changes. Still, it also goes against the whole unique costume approach. It wasn’t until this moment that the game finally felt like it was coming together. The only thing is, it did so two months before release. For most, this was already too late to change that first impression that dominated since the announcement. I will point out though, that I have actively seen much more enthusiasm and enjoyment since the Beta launched.
So, the game was finally picking up steam. Then, Sony announces that Spider-Man was exclusive to PlayStation. For some, this was a boiling point that just enhanced the already negative first impression. Square-Enix slowly started rolling out movie-level tie-in products. These created this feeling of disconnect or “anti-consumerism” as some called it. Keep in mind though, this is not a new practice. PlayStation has used the exclusivity model even back in 2009 with Batman: Arkham Asylum. PS owners were the only ones able to play as Joker at the time.
The reality is, it is a selling point. Also, Sony wants to remain consistent with its brand. Spider-Man is an exclusive franchise on their console. They probably went into heavy negotiations to ensure it remains that way. Actually, Sony generally has an obsession with exclusivity deals. Destiny 2: Forsaken and Fortnite have an extreme amount of exclusive skins or weapons. The spotlight on a major brand like Marvel just made Sony’s model stand out more. If it weren’t for Spider-Man, the other promotional items would’ve been ignored. Yet, no matter how the Internet reacts, the pre-orders for the game skyrocketed because a character as iconic as Spider-Man will draw in attention. It’s not a good practice but it sadly just works.
Everything calmed down a bit as the Beta was finally made available. Reactions seemed more positive with the usual outliers just reiterating their existing concerns. Naturally, the Beta is a very chopped up version of the game. People that are concerned about a lack of story will get that same feeling here. The Beta rushes through A-Day without warning the player. It once created the image of this is how the game works. Besides, one concern was the mission diversity. Naturally, by the time the third week rolled around, people were still playing it. At that point, it could only be repetitive. Let’s be honest, the bugs and re-used assets didn’t help. Nothing was added throughout the week that just limited the experience. It probably would’ve been better off with just two weeks. This most likely was extended to three because Sony had to have an extra weekend exclusive to them.
I am not here to discuss what the Beta is or isn’t. Mainly wanted to point out how this early access also paints the picture from a marketing point-of-view. Especially with how they are heavily advertising that people can access it. Also, this gave us an important opportunity to get a vision for how involved Crystal Dynamics will be. How would they handle critique from the player base to ensure longevity? The inclusion of a Discord network and open communication via Social Media took away some of my concerns. They were actively communicating and adapting according to feedback. Hell, they even updated the Beta regularly throughout all three weeks. This gave some a sense of security that was sorely lacking before.
The game has flaws and it is uncertain if they will be able to fix everything by the time it is released. We don’t know how frequently we can expect new updates. Luckily, a leak did show that there are quite a few heroic additions planned. Everyone has their preference. I believe that marketing did create a lot of bias that is hard to overcome. The models were rough. We barely knew anything about it. All we knew, was 5Gum gets you a free Emote. Their promotion team just took the wrong angle. They believed A-Day alone could sell the game until shortly before launch. Its focus on exclusivity deals and brandings watered down the work Crystal Dynamics put in for some.
Yet, saying it would’ve been better as a single-player game does the same thing. I believe it when they said this game ambitious. They approached it from the beginning as an expanding adventure. If done right, this could be an amazing experience. Sadly, they just didn’t really sell it for a long time. Avengers had a chance to grow out of the shadows of those that came before. I believe that if they stick to the War Table updates, continue to communicate with their active players, and clean up the bugs, this game could be a long-term experience many will not want to miss out on. Here’s hoping we get one more War Table before launch that just maybe teases that ambition a bit more.
