Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania did not open to considerable fanfare on Rotten Tomatoes with most of the review scores landing it at around 63%. As usual, it tends to go down slowly and as it already was on the border of being a “Rotten” score, it has not passed that limit with 95 reviews to a score of 58%. As such, it’s only the second MCU film to receive this type of rating after Eternals’ ended up with 47% on 406 reviews.
Is it the end times of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Probably not, and it’s still on course to make quite an opening. There’s also the fact that general moviegoers are analyzed through a separate CinemaScore that could go either way. Eternals had the franchises’ first B score and it’s uncertain if the same will be true for Quantumania. Even the Venom films have a B+ score with a 30% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes critics. Ironically, that film has an 80% audience score, which we won’t see until the end of the weekend for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
The film’s biggest problems according to critics might play in its favor for those fans just waiting to see the franchise expand again. Phase 4 was known for being a bit more individual with its projects without a proper “endgame” which this film adds to the franchise’s next two phases. So, who knows where it might end up with audiences but it’s hard to say.
We’ve entered Phase 5 and while Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has opened to a soft 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, it doesn’t mean that there’s a lot of exciting developments in the near future. We know that we’re about to enter a new era for Marvel Studios, as they leave the pandemic behind and its limitations but also some creative new projects that might push the projects into new directions.
Among them is Captain America: New World Order, which builds upon Sam Wilson’s lesson to becoming Captain America from The Falcon and the Winter Solider in a globe-trotting adventure. He will face some new and familiar villains with the confirmed return of Thunderbolt Ross. Sadly, William Hurt tragically passed away but cinema icon Harrison Ford is set to take over the role. And it seems that Kevin Feige is quite excited about having him on board.
We start filming relatively soon. I’m sure anyone you’ve ever talked with about Harrison Ford says this, but it’s unbelievable that we get to meet and talk with him and that he’s embracing this role. He’s tireless with the amount of work that he does. This is certainly a big part for Thaddeus Ross.

The big reveal, however, is that he confirms that Thunderbolt Ross has moved on from Secretary of State to President in the upcoming fourth Captain America film.
He’s the president of the United States in the film. And with Harrison, you think about Air Force One, and you think about some of his confrontations with the president in Clear and Present Danger. There’s a dynamic between President Ross and Sam Wilson. They have a history together, but in this film, we’ll be seeing the dynamic between Captain America and the president of the United States in a way that is just incredible.

It certainly sounds like they found a perfect person to carry on the mantle that also pays tribute to the direction of the character. Ford is no stranger to playing presidents, which makes his addition quite fitting and who knows if we’ll see the President of the United States join in the action in Captain America: New World Order.
2023 is definitely looking to be a much stronger year at the box office with quite a few releases going all the way to September. It’s getting kicked off by Marvel Studios’ latest, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania which is already eyeing a franchise-best opening weekend. It’s currently set to track $120M over a four-day period to use the Presidents Day holiday. The minimum expectation is $95M over three days with a conservative $105M to $110M by the end of the weekend.
While some may complain it won’t rival the recent releases, it’s a franchise-best as it’s 25% higher than Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s $75.8M opening in 2018. It’s also eyeing a $160M global start, which may include a long-awaited Chinese release between $35M to $55M. That would put it at a global launch at around $280M, but there is definitely potential. As it now opened to rather mixed to positive reviews with 63% on Rotten Tomatoes going by 70 reviews, it’s uncertain if that may impede its success a bit.
Though, many are looking forward to seeing who the “next Thanos” is going to be in Jonathan Majors‘s long-awaited arrival as Kang the Conqueror. There’s a chance the film may still score a positive A- CinemaScore and even the last B entries weren’t affected too negatively. Eternals was more of an indie film that may not work for everyone (especially with its long runtime and slow pacing), Thor: Love and Thunder took a very comedic direction even for Marvel’s standard and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness dipped its toe enough in the horror genre that may have general audiences a bit squeamish (going by general horror reception).
The film is currently tracking 15% behind Thor: Love and Thunder opened to $144.1M over three days last year and still went on to make $760M on a B+ CinemaScore. It might seem like a $700M run is possible for the film but that also depends on how frontloaded it is; which is not uncommon for any of these types of films. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever also managed an impressive $828M global run, so even as Marvel Studios remains quite experimental, they aren’t slowing down at the box office quite yet. Only time will tell as we enter Phase 5 and its comparably bigger projects.
Many have been wondering where the announcement is for the fourth entry in the MCU’s take on Spider-Man. We had the bombastic multiverse storyline in Spider-Man: No Way Home that ended in a big way; taking Peter Parker back to his roots. We haven’t seen Tom Holland‘s take since the 2019’s release but it looks like the project is moving forward steadily.
In an extensive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kevin Feige was asked the question dropped if he might have an update for the next Spider-Man film and it seems they already have their story done. The only thing missing is “putting pen to paper” by the writers behind the project; who haven’t been announced either.
All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.

It’s definitely encouraging to know that they are still actively working on the fourth Spider-Man film. It’ll be challenging to see how they follow up something like No Way home, but taking a step back seems like the best direction they could take.
We got the hint of Parker being left to his own devices without any of the Avengers truly remembering who he is. So, it not only gives Marvel the chance to establish a new trilogy while also taking the lessons learned from past entries. They avoided the clichés of the franchise up until now, so they might have a chance to return to the classics.
We’re already about to see Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but we know tiny bout what exactly is happening on the Disney+ side of things. There have been a few teases of projects getting postponed and we still have no release date for Secret Invasion; Marvel Studios’ return to exploring the more grounded, spy-centered aspect of its franchise.
While we still wait for a new trailer and release date, it seems we got at least a minor update for the show created by Mr. Robot‘s Kyle Bradstreet. According to the always reliable Film Music Reporter, Kris Bowers has joined the project as its composer. He’s worked on quite a variety of projects ranging from Dear White People. the popular Bridgerton series, Green Book, and even Space Jam: A New Legacy. So, he definitely has an interesting variety of projects on his back but may have the opportunity to work on many others similar to how Michael Giacchino became quite a favorite.
The first tease we got for Secret Invasion hinted at a very grounded take on the original, which is likely to upset some hoping to see a bunch of Skrull-replaced Avengers. Still, the story does lend itself to Marvel Studios to attempt their own take on what Andor accomplished. Plus, if you get someone as talented as Bradstreet to direct a series for you, you’ll be sure to give him as much freedom to make it work and play with your head throughout.
Well, here’s an exciting surprise. We’ve long heard about a mysterious Star Wars project from Damon Lindelof and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy but still have no idea how far along in production it is. The project was first teased all the way back in March and a new rumor from The Hot Mic may have hinted that it has already found its central star. It seems that the future Wonder Man himself, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has joined another major franchise and will be one of the leads for this new Star Wars entry that reportedly takes place after The Rise of Skywalker.
This is naturally a rumor and nothing more, but Adul-Mateen has been quite the rising star. Not only did he have a major role in the Aquaman film but was even set to lead a spinoff that sadly got canceled. He took on the iconic horror role of Candyman in a recent remake and is also attached to Marvel Studios’ upcoming series Wonder Man. So, adding another Disney franchise with Star Wars to his resume is definitely not too shabby.
This also marks the second time he and Lindelof worked together on a project, as he also took on the role of Dr. Manhattan. He gave quite a memorable performance and may have left quite an impression, which potentially put him on the list to lead this project. It’s certainly going to be exciting to see just how far his career will go and how big his future is with Star Wars if this turns out to be true.
A new rumor has hit the web, hinting that Netflix’s upcoming live-action adaptation of One Piece may not release until August 31st. The news dropped just a week after we got our first official look at the adaptation, which gave us a simple tease of the main cast from behind; a perfect way to hint at what’s to come. The biggest confirmation from the first look was also the fact that we’ll be getting the series at some point in 2023. Now, with a new rumor hinting at when it might release, maybe some old releases may help point to when we can expect more news throughout the years.
Our first actual footage of the show arrived on October 19th with the “Lost Session” teaser. In retrospect, it was a great little teaser that was closer to what Cowboy Bebop feels like than the actual show itself, which had a much slower pace in comparison. Ironically, we still wouldn’t get an actual trailer of the show until October 27th; only 21 days before the actual release.
Given we got the first poster before even a cast image, it seems like One Piece is getting more attention than the previous Tomorrow Studio collaboration. Given it was only truly promoted for less than three full months, it almost seems like Netflix was desperately trying to hide the show and it never got a chance ahead of its cancelation on December 9th.
The Sandman’s Drag-Out
So, there’s another major release and adaptation that may offer a hint at how we can expect the release window for the future. Taking a glance at The Sandman, however, it seems like some marketing ploys can even drag out a bit longer than one might expect. We got our first look at the adaptation back in 2021; September 25th to be exact with a variety of character posters and first footage as part of Geeked Week of that year.
Yet, we wouldn’t really get anything else out of the series until a new key art poster was released on June 6th that confirmed a release on August 5th. We also got a few new character posters. So, we got the exact release date around two months ahead of its premiere with the trailer following on July 24th. So, Netflix once again held onto that full look at the series until the last possible second even as we already got footage the year before.

Netflix really likes to keep a more intense promotional window for a series shortly before its release. There are some similarities with One Piece given that we got some behind-the-scenes footage for the new series during Geeked Week on June 6th, 2022. So, the early showcase isn’t too different but this time we had to wait half a year before we got any key art for the adaptation.
Wednesday’s Balance
The Sandman isn’t the only major 2022 release, as we also have the massive success of The Addam’s Family remake focusing on Wednesday Addams. Ironically, Wednesday has the perfect balance between the two with a shorter promotional window but adding quite a few smaller snippets to promote the adaptation before we get our first actual teaser or trailer.
Back in May of this year, we got a poster for the series hinting at a Fall 2022 release that gave us a tease of what to expect with a caricature of Wednesday Addams. That was swiftly followed by a teaser on June 1st giving us our first look at Thing before Jenna Ortega was unveiled just five days later. It was our first look at the series and was given quite the highlight during Geeked Week with a still image and small teaser video. We would have to wait until August 17th before we got a teaser trailer.
The fact that we had a trailer without a specific release window is quite curious as we wouldn’t find out its release date was November 23rd with the second poster that was released on September 23rd. So, the two-month window is still there for the release date but this time we saw footage around three months before. This time around we didn’t get any character posters until November 2nd though, as the focus was mainly on Wednesday; it’s titled after her.
It’s no surprise that the series would go on to break viewership records, as the series had the most stretched-out advertising campaign with a steady build-up towards its release and giving viewers a bit more time to build up interest in its release. It’s curious how that release date confirmation is always around two months ahead of its release and something that Cowboy Bebop surprisingly unveiled the earliest out of all projects with the shortest marketing campaign.
One Piece’s Potential
So, we have very distinct pieces of a puzzle to potentially connect when we may expect a release for One Piece. As it stands now, we only know that the series will “set sail in 2023” and we got not one but two key visuals for the live-action adaptation. There is one similarity with The Sandman stretch-out as we got a first tease all the way back in 2022 just as they were filming the project, but it wasn’t as extensive.
Of course, any of this is just speculation based on behavior partners on how Netflix promotes its series. There’s a lot of optimism if a series is given time to breathe ahead of its release, as rushing it out and not giving anyone time to really take it all in like with Cowboy Bebop just dooms a project from the get-go. It’s why many movie trailers drop six months in advance and we don’t hear anything until we’re actually closing in on the release date.
The best comparison is likely Wednesday with the teaser poster releasing early and no confirmed release date. While it would’ve been nice to get a “Summer 2023” inclusion, it does seem that Netflix wants to keep some flexibility on when exactly it’ll drop but with the rumored release date, we may have some potential wiggle room on when we could expect something.
There is one major anchor that gives us some orientation on when we can expect a major drop for the series and that is Geeked Week. It has taken place at the beginning of June 2021 and 2022. So, it may be safe to assume it’ll once again take place around that same time window and Netflix will definitely want to promote one of its biggest releases during that event.
Wednesday had the benefit of having its first poster drop around the time Geeked Week took place, so for that time window we’d have to consider the time window is a bit longer but not as out-there as The Sandman was. Still, it makes it challenging to figure out just how much they’ll plan around that event and try to keep everything for the “big reveal” during Geeked Week or not.
Potential Marketing Roadmap
So, after all that deduction: here’s a potential timeline based on previous projects on when we might expect teases to promote the One Piece series:
January – Teaser Poster & Key Art
April/May – New Poster, First Full Look at Cast
June – First Trailer and Release Date (Geeked Week 2023)
July – Second Trailer, Character Posters
August – Release on Netflix
It’s a very rough estimate but it’s hard to say if we’ll see anything before May, even if it would be great to drip-feed at least something. Still, an optimistic look would be to see a photo of the cast in their outfits around April, as they start promoting the series through a variety of interviews with showrunners, and the cast. Perhaps we’ll even have a statement from Eiichiro Oda; whose support may push this series into the spotlight it needs. The time window would also match the two-month wait between Geeked week and the first trailer. Still, it doesn’t seem likely we’ll get any real information for a few months given there’s no time window included with the posters.
Where the optimism comes in is the expectation to really see the ball rolling as of May with something new hitting every month if they truly are going for that 31st August release date. A series based on pirates is perfect for a summer release and with their two-month rule, we’ll likely see a trailer around June. What is in June? Geeked Week, of course, if they remain consistent with the last few years. So, we may get a poster either shortly before to promote its appearance or worst case alongside the trailer.
If we get any tease for One Piece in June, we can safely bet on an August release. Netflix really likes building around that event and it would seem fitting if they get their own segment and plenty of promotion. Wednesday‘s success may also play a factor in their hopes to replicate that same momentum to break more records with a series that is based on the most popular manga.
Of course, this isn’t something one should take as a definite time window, as anything related to the project could shift any of these predictions. They are mainly based on what has come in the past and how Netflix seemingly operates with its biggest releases. One thing is certain: this isn’t another rushed drop like with Cowboy Bebop and Netflix may be wanting to make this as big as they can to ensure its success to establish the next Stranger Things level series.
Given the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many assume that anything with the Marvel logo slapped on it will be a commercial success in every way possible. Though, it’s not always definite that it’ll sell well, especially in the gaming market which is quite a bit more volatile depending on what type of game is being offered. Sadly, it seems that the ambitious card-based strategy RPG Midnight Suns could not benefit from the logo.
In a tweet, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier shared that the CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, has seemingly pointed to Midnight Suns being a commercial flop even with its critical success highlighting the “release window” as a potential factor on what dragged the game’s success in the market down.
Going by this, an expectation for the game to build upon its post-credit sequence might be a pipedream. We still have three more DLC characters heading our way after the recent release of Deadpool. Midnight Suns isn’t going to wrap up and they haven’t announced that the project is shutting down, but it does seem safe to say that the DLC is all we’ll really get out of the game’s longevity.
It’s such a shame but a card-based RPG was a tough sale from the beginning, as some online reactions to the game’s initial announcement had people a bit worried. The knockback system did offer some variety and its combination of exploring a central hub while taking on various missions offered variety, it also wasn’t truly marketed enough ahead of its release. Constant delays didn’t help matters much sadly but perhaps Firaxis still might give a sequel a shot.
Here’s a big surprise, but it seems Yellowstone is coming to an end. The series is currently the top-rated drama and seemingly one of those shows that could continue for quite some time but co-creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan has decided to end the current version of the show. Yet, it’s not the end of the Dutton saga as Matthew McConaughey is set to spearhead a sequel series.
It seems that the reasoning behind this movie actually is due to its main star Kevin Costner. He has limited the number of days he shoots for the production to 65 days but seemingly pushed for even less in its current season. Yet even after winning best television actor in a drama series at the Golden Globes, he continued to want to spend less time in Yellowstone with only a week of shooting.
The reason seems to be his involvement with the western epic Horizon, which he not only stars in but also is directing and co-wrote. Though, Costner plays the Dutton patriarch and is a major player in the series. Paramount has not offered any confirmation but praised McConaughey. It seems that nothing is quite set in stone as he is currently in negotiations. Sheridan‘s 1883 was also quite the success, so other Yellowstone spinoffs have all eyes on them as one of Paramount’s biggest TV franchises ever; even if it moves on from its main star.
The upcoming continuation of the iconic Planet of the Apes trilogy is moving full steam ahead, as the 20th Century Studios production has added one more member to its cast. The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled that Dichen Lachman, known for her recent work on the series Severance, has joined the production of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which will explore the aftermath of 2017’s War of the Planet of the Apes long after Caesar’s reign.
In this continuation, we’ll explore two apes on their unique journey as one uncovers human technology and the other is on his way to find freedom. Though, a human woman seemingly becomes essential to his quest and has her own goals. Production is already happening in Australia and Lachman joins the rest of the cast which consists of Freya Allan, William H. Macy, Kevin Durand, and Owen Teague.
As of now, Lachman‘s role remains unclear, but Lachman is a good get for the series. She was recently seen on Jurassic World Dominion as a black market dealer, and even voiced General Atitaya in Raya and the Last Dragon. She also made a big splash with her recent work on the Apple TV+ series though she’s also going to be busy filming the second season of Severance. So, she might have a supporting role in the Planet of the Apes sequel.
