  • Jon Cryer Pitched a ‘Legion of Doom’ Arrowverse Spinoff Series

Jon Cryer Pitched a ‘Legion of Doom’ Arrowverse Spinoff Series

Jon Cryer may be famous for his time on Two and a Half Men, but he also gave us a memorable run as Lex Luthor in the Arrowverse series. He was first introduced in Supergirl before becoming a mainstay and a big part of its Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover series. In a surprise reveal, it seems like Cryer also wanted to lead his own series as he reveals in a tweet that he pitched a Legion of Doom spinoff series.

While villain-focused projects are seldom, it’s kind of surprising that this never picked up any pace or even that CW wasn’t interested. Cryer was a household name and it would’ve stood out from the other projects in development. Though, it’s unclear if this may have happened around the time CW was already pulling back on its various projects especially with Superman and Lois moving away from the Arrowverse to tell its own story.

Lex Luthor has become a popular addition to various projects, as we recently got Titus Welliver in the role of Titans and the recent casting of The Walking Dead star Michael Cudlitz in the role of Superman and Lois. We’ll also get a new version in the upcoming live-action Superman film in development from James Gunn, which will likely become the de facto version of the new DC Universe moving forward.

  • ‘Quantumania’ Writer Teases MODOK May Get Him Fired From ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’

‘Quantumania’ Writer Teases MODOK May Get Him Fired From ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’

MODOK has been Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s worst secret, as early on we got quite a few teases and rumors that hinted at his involvement. It went even as far as to hint at who exactly is playing the character long before we got our first look at any footage from the Marvel sci-fi epic.

In an interview with SFX Magazine, writer Jeff Loveness revealed that his work on MODOK may be his favorite of the entire film. That is saying a lot considering we’ll have the first real look at Jonathan Majors as the iconic Kang the Conqueror, the main antagonist of the entire Multiverse Saga moving forward. He also teases a “little bit of extra” that they added to the character that’ll be interesting.

There is a little bit of extra we put into him. Maybe I’ll get fired off [Avengers: The Kang Dynasty] when people see it, but some of my favorite moments come from M.O.D.O.K. and the dynamics there.

    Jeff Loveness

That sounds quite promising and MODOK has always been a fantastic ploy. The Hulu animated series showcased just how out-there the character can be and we’re about to see how he works in live-action. It’ll be funny though to see what exactly he added that makes Loveness think he’ll get fired off of his next film, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

  • ‘Cowboy Bebop’ Creator Barely Got Thorugh the Opening of Netflix’s Live-Action Adaptation

‘Cowboy Bebop’ Creator Barely Got Thorugh the Opening of Netflix’s Live-Action Adaptation

Cowboy Bebop is a much-beloved anime series for how it bent and twisted our understanding of the genre to fit its neo-noir episodic format. So, when Netflix announced it’ll attempt on bringing it into live-action, there was quite some concern early on. Not only was Netflix’s track record not the best with the controversial release of Death Note, but it also seems like one of those series that just won’t translate well into the media format.

In 2021 we finally got the release of the live-action series starring John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, and Daniella Pineda in the roles of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, and Faye Valentine. It did not catch the attention of viewers as much as Netflix may have hoped and stands at a 47% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though it did get a more positive reception from viewers. Still, it seems not enough to watch it for it was swiftly canceled after teasing a second season.

Interestingly enough, the series creator Shinichiro Watanabe was brought on as a creative consultant had many think that it may stay true to the spirit of the original. Yet, it seems that Watanabe may have had a consulting role but only received some footage to review and barely made it through the opening of the series which was an adaptation of the famous casino scene from the movie.

For the new Netflix live-action adaptation, they sent me a video to review and check. It started with a scene in a casino, which made it very tough for me to continue. I stopped there and so only saw that opening scene. It was clearly not Cowboy Bebop and I realized at that point that if I wasn’t involved, it would not be Cowboy Bebop. I felt that maybe I should have done this. Although the value of the original anime is somehow far higher now.

    Shinichiro Watanabe

This is quite surprising, as it raises the question of just how far his consulting job went as he states that he “wasn’t involved.” This is quite a curious reveal and stands in quite a contrast to how One Piece is currently being handled. While it’s unclear if this may have been a learning from that project, Eiichiro Oda is also very protective of how his beloved manga series is brought to life.

Multiple times it has been pointed too that Oda has a very heavy involvement with the live-action adaptation with even some hints that they may actively be having him ensure that the spirit of his work remains alive. So, it’s a shame that a similar level of care hasn’t been done with Cowboy Bebop. Though it’s a shame that its talented cast couldn’t continue their work as there was still some potential to utilize this unique world and cast of characters in a new take.

  • Marvel Studios Holds a “Post-Mortem” for Every MCU Project to Learn What Didn’t Work

Marvel Studios Holds a “Post-Mortem” for Every MCU Project to Learn What Didn’t Work

For a long time, there was an ongoing joke that Tony Stark would always learn a lesson from a previous film that would make a short appearance in a future project. One of the most notable was when Rhodey had his accident in Captain America: Civil War, he made sure that Spider-Man had a safety parachute in his suit during Spider-Man: Homecoming. It looks like that ongoing joke is something that Marvel Studios also lives by.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed in an interview with Movie Business Podcast that they hold “post-mortem on every project” to take away lessons from each project and it even was something that started back in the first Iron Man all the way back in 2008 but they wouldn’t receive their name until much later.

We do a post-mortem on every project, or at least we try to, if we’re not too busy with the next project, to sit and discuss what went right and what went wrong. And I remember we started doing that, we were asked to do it for the first time on ‘Iron Man 1.’ And we call them ‘post-mortems’ now, at the time it was a ‘what went wrong’ meeting. We were asked to do a ‘what went wrong’ meeting for Iron Man. And I thought, ‘What went wrong? This movie’s a giant hit, it launched a whole studio? Why do we have to do a what went wrong meeting?

There’s something funny about hearing the comment regarding the reaction to a “what went wrong meeting” given that this isn’t an unusual practice in other industries. Though, it highlights the importance of what Marvel Studios has accomplished throughout the last 10+ years of pushing this franchise forward: they always try to learn what worked and didn’t work. He also highlights they always want to “entertain first” with their projects.

That’s a horrible way to put it, which is what I was reacting to. But it is actually great to sit and go, ‘Here’s what was done, here’s how we could have done it better.’ And we do that on every project. And I guess to distill it down of what lessons is learned is, entertain the audience [at every] turn. Frank Capra has a quote that our Co-President Louis D’esposito quotes often, which is basically distilled down to, entertain first.

The Internet might have their own opinions on what works or doesn’t work for the Marvel Studios projects, as someone can be quite vocal. But, it’s reassuring to know that they take this seriously and try to take some lessons away from any project they work on, no matter how successful. It might also reflect on how they keep it moving forward and building towards its future.

Going by many rumors and reports making the rounds, it seems they learned quite a bit from their pandemic era that consisted of Phase 4 and have adjusted accordingly going into their next phase of films and building towards the climax that is Avengers: Secret Wars and the end of the Multiverse Saga.

  • Marvel Studios President Reveals their Goal With the MCU

Marvel Studios President Reveals their Goal With the MCU

There’s always an ongoing discussion on the value that Marvel STudios brings as a production studio. There’s a bizarre fascination with the phenomenon of a Cinematic Universe running for over ten years and still having a powerful hold on the market. While Phase 4 may be considered their most “mixed” depending on who you ask, there’s no denying that they still remain a curious cinematic entry in the history.

Yet, as many discuss where its value lies, may it be in its cinematic approach to storytelling or even if it holds any actual cinematic value. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige believes that their main goal is to be “entertaining” to those watching their films or series; the same goes for the creatives working with them to bring these projects to life..

You can have as many beautiful messages, and beautiful life theories, and beautiful thematics that you want to put into the world, that all of us do, and all of our filmmakers do. But if you are not entertaining first, it will fall on deaf ears. And I think that has always been the way, and that thankfully when you are making the kind of movies that you love to see then that will also go into entertaining yourself, which is what we also try to do here at Marvel Studios

    Kevin Feige

There are many discussions online, but there’s one thing that does showcase why of all attempts at a cinematic universe, Marvel manages to remain at the top. There’s a passion in the producing team and those they work with. If Marvel is forever only time can tell but as long as there is some passion, they won’t likely stop doing the things they enjoy bringing to life. No matter how the internet reacts but as long as their films fill the seats.

  • ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Station 19’ Spinoff Showrunner Stepping Down

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Station 19’ Spinoff Showrunner Stepping Down

It looks like something big is happening over at ABC, as Krista Vernoff has officially stepped down as the showrunner of the long-running Grey’s Anatomy and its spinoff Station 19. While responsible for both series, she’s spearheaded the medical drama for six years and its spinoff for another four. Vernoff has shared the following statement in regard to her leaving the two series behind for someone new to take over.

It has been the privilege of a lifetime to be entrusted to run Grey’s Anatomy for the past six years and Station 19 for the last four. The passion of the dedicated fandoms and the impact that these shows have on hearts and minds cannot be overstated. The amount of talent in these two extraordinary casts and these two brilliant writers rooms is beyond measure — and these crews work magic week after week.

    Krista Vernoff

Vernoff has been involved with Grey’s Anatomy since its first seven seasons, where she went on to rise the ranks and then return once again in 2017 for its 14th season. It’s also no small task that she was responsible for a second series on the side, and it seems that she’s definitely not leaving ABC, as her production company Trip the Light Productions has several projects already in development, one even eyeing a streaming release on Hulu.

There is currently no one set to take over the next seasons but it seems like a deal is currently being finalized. Currently, veteran Meg Marinis is the favorite to take over with Station 19 to be supervised by executive producer Zoanne Clack who’ll act as a co-showrunner with Peter Paige of Good Trouble and The Fosters fame. So, we might get an announcement sooner rather than later.

  • RUMOR: ‘Loki’ Season 2 May Introduce a New Inventor Variant of Kang

RUMOR: ‘Loki’ Season 2 May Introduce a New Inventor Variant of Kang

It looks like the number of times we’ll see Jonathan Majors‘ Kang is finally ramping up. After a brief tease in Loki‘s first season with He Who Remains, a new rumor is making the rounds that we’ll perhaps see another variation of the character appear in its upcoming second season. This would mark the third Variant we’ll meet as it’ll release after February’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

According to insider Daniel Richtman, it seems that the upcoming second season of Loki will offer a new Variant that is “an inventor in the past.” It seems he buys things that’ll affect the future and it’s Loki’s job to stop him. Given we see a version of Kang the Conqueror in command of the Time Variance Authority, he might be using them to hunt down other versions of himself that are affecting the multiverse.

Richtman also goes on to highlight that he’s unsure if this is Victor Timely, a version of Nathaniel Richards from the comics and also known as “Prime Kang” but that “it is likely him.” The character is known as the one who ends up forming the town of Timely which would eventually blossom into Chronopolis, which is theorized to be the city we visit in Quantumania.

It’ll definitely be interesting to see how this develops, and if we might see even more versions of the character appear throughout the next few phases. Majors highlighted that the joy of Kang was that he can play different variations that allow him to explore different perspectives on the character. So, he’ll definitely jump at the opportunity to bring Victor Timely to life.

  • ‘Warrior Nun’ Showrunner Reveals Netflix Wide Mandate for 8 Episode Seasons

‘Warrior Nun’ Showrunner Reveals Netflix Wide Mandate for 8 Episode Seasons

Netflix is no stranger to shorter season episode counts, as they reshaped the way drama and comedy series would be structured. The once 22-episode runs from broadcasts started to go down to the famous 13-episode era that kicked off when Daredevil was released. Yet, we’ve seen that episode count continue to decline with more ten-episode seasons and as of late, a focus on eight episodes.

As it turns out though, this isn’t something that a group of creatives indirectly decided together but rather a new mandate set by Netflix. Warrior Nun showrunner Simon Barry revealed it in an interview with Be More Super Podcast that around the time they were writing their second season, that mandate was introduced and allowed them to adapt their scripts.

We knew it was going to be eight in the writing room because the Netflix mandate wasn’t a budget thing. It was Netflix shifting all their shows to eight-episode seasons, their studio shows I should say, not the shows they acquire and broadbust but the ones they make inhouse as a studio. So, we knew that Netflix decided to make this shift across the board but it wasn’t something Warrior Nun was being punished for anything, we existed long enough to see it go from 10 to 8 for everyone.

    Simon Barry

The first season of Warrior Nun was still part of the ten-episode era and many worried that perhaps the episode reduction was due to some criticism of that first entry. Yet, it seems they merely swiftly adjusted before entering production and had to rewrite the entire show; even if that sadly didn’t help them from getting canceled after the second season was released back in November.

Given the timing, this news also matches with our exclusive a year ago that the live-action One Piece series has also reduced its episode count to eight. It was initially announced with ten episodes all the way back in 2020 but the timing would match with the new mandate. The Witcher also was quite a success with that same episode count back in 2019 and may have inspired the new standard.

  • ‘Secret Invasion’s Emilia Clarke Praises Marvel Studios, Calls Them “Absolutely Brilliant”

‘Secret Invasion’s Emilia Clarke Praises Marvel Studios, Calls Them “Absolutely Brilliant”

Marvel Studios has been in the focus for a variety of reasons. No matter where one lands, the discussion may never truly end especially on the wide vast internet. Still, there are many sides to any production company, and it seems that the former Game of Thrones star has some kind words for Marvel Studios.

In a new interview with IndieWire, Emilia Clarke got a chance to look back at her past with Disney’s other major franchise Star Wars while also sharing some excitement about her time with Secret Invasion. It seems that she’d a “wicked time” working with them and calls them “absolutely brilliant.”

I’m genuinely having a wicked time on Marvel, though, they’re absolutely brilliant.

    Emilia Clarke

It’s certainly high praise for Marvel Studios, which has tended to be under flack from Social Media and some industry experts. Some veteran directors even take shots at the modern blockbuster style that these comic book film adaptations offer. Ethan Hawke did point out that the studio “loves actors and their studio approach gives the various directors that work on their films more flexibility in adapting elements by normalizing reshoots.

The biggest issue facing Marvel Studios has been the growing demand for CG work on their projects and with last-minute changes happening frequently, it adds more pressure to an industry that has a difficult model similar to marketing agencies. Not everything is as black and white but it always remains interesting to see just how varied experiences are on any project in Hollywood.

  • ‘The Sandman’ Season 2 Eyeing Summer Production Start

‘The Sandman’ Season 2 Eyeing Summer Production Start

Netflix hasn’t been doing its best at keeping enthusiasm alive for the streaming service. After canceling quite a few shows, it almost feels like a rarity when one does eventually make its return. Luckily, the ambitious and beautiful The Sandman was able to get that rare Season 2 renewal and is already preparing to start production on its second season according to Mason Alexander Park, who recently offered some insight into what’s heading our way during the Fan Expo in San Francisco.

Park plays Desire in the DC series, who has a big role going into the next part of the series. During the panel, they highlight though that there’s a reason this won’t be called “Season 2” as it traditionally would. So, we’ll have to see what they’ll title this continuation but they do highlight that production is set to start this summer.

There is more Sandman coming in a really cool way and it can take many forms, so we’re starting shooting in the summer and we’re gonna tackle the next huge chunk of stories in however long that might take. And I’m really excited to share the format of what that might be with everybody eventually.

    Mason Alexander Park

The highlight of the format of this continuation does sound interesting and perhaps they will split the seasons up according to various story elements to keep the tale of Morpheus coming out in multiple steps. We had the additional episodes that expanded the original series and there’s also the fact that Netflix experiments with establishing two distinct parts for some of their biggest releases. So, we might see this trend continue.
