RUMOR: ‘Blue Beetle’ Will Feature Carapax and an Original Foe

The DC Extended Universe is about to get a little bit bigger with the arrival of Jaime Reyes, aka the Blue Beetle. Fans are eager to see the third and most popular iteration of the character make his big-screen debut next year. Sadly, we still don’t know a ton regarding the plot of the project. Details on just who Jaime will face in the film are still scarce, but a new rumor may hint at a rather unknown foe.

The Cosmic Circus is reporting that the DC villain Carapax will be making his live-action debut in the film alongside what seems to be an original character named Victoria Kord. Of course, that name would seem familiar as that is the last name of Ted Kord, mentor to Jaime Reyes, and the second person to don the mantle of Blue Beetle. Victora Kord reportedly also has connections to Bruna Marquezine’s character, who is only known as Jenny.

Conrad Carapax was an archeologist and rival of Daniel Garret, the first Blue Beetle. He traveled to Pago Island where he found the remains of a lab that once belonged to Jarvis Kord, the uncle of Ted Kord. He was killed when trying to activate a robot but ended up fusing his mind with it. Victoria could possibly have some sort of link to Jarvis, or maybe be a gender-bent version of the character. Jarvis spent his time on the island-building robot he intended to use to take over the world. Victoria being in an antagonist role alongside Carapax could hint at this change.

Blue Beetle is set to hit theaters on August 18th, 2023.

  • First Full Look at Barry Keoghan’s Joker Revealed in Newly Released ‘The Batman’ Footage

First Full Look at Barry Keoghan’s Joker Revealed in Newly Released ‘The Batman’ Footage

The Batman hit theaters just a few weeks ago and made waves amongst the community, some heralding it as the definitive Batman film. Towards the end of the film, we saw a bit of setup for the future of the franchise, with a mysterious prisoner in Arkham locked up alongside Riddler, who upon speaking was revealed to be the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker.

Matt Reeves has shared a new look at Keoghan in full prosthetics, locked up in Arkham asylum and seemingly being interrogated by Batman. We only get a look at the character from the back, but it seems to be somewhat burned with minimal hair. The design looks somewhat like Cameron Monaghan Joker that was featured on Gotham.

That’s not all, as one of the long-rumored scenes that didn’t make it into the film has also been shared.

In a closer look at the character, we get to see the Joker’s full face, featuring the permanent smile that Reeves revealed following the film’s release. This Joker has already found himself a home in Arkham, presumably running into the Bat during Bruce’s first active year on the Gotham project. It would be interesting to see if the character shares a similar origin to what was alluded to in The Killing Joke storyline as he does seem to have some sort of burns on his skin, but it’s hard to miss that smile.

We have yet to hear any official word on a sequel to The Batman but as fans and critics praise it with the box office haul passing $600 million, it seems inevitable.

  • Nicolas Cage Hints That His Superman May Live After All in a Potential Cameo

Nicolas Cage Hints That His Superman May Live After All in a Potential Cameo

All the way back in 1997, Tim Burton almost ditched Gotham City to catch some sun over in Metropolis, as he’d begun development on a Superman film titled Superman Lives. The film would’ve featured Nicolas Cage in the titular role of the last son of Krypton but the project was eventually scrapped.

During a recent segment on GQ’s Actually Me, the actor took some time to answer some burning questions from his fans. One, in particular, focused on Cage‘s role as Superman and asked if they could just make it happen now. The actor’s answer was a bit surprising, as he seemed to hint at a potential return to that role after all.

“Would it matter how much time I appeared as the character? There might still be a chance.”

    Nicholas Cage

If Cage was to hypothetically make a cameo as the Man of Steel in any upcoming project, The Flash would seem like the most likely outcome. The multiverse angle of the plot could see Flash traveling through many versions of Earth. One could just so happen to be the one Superman Lives would’ve taken place.

Superman Lives would’ve been quite the movie as it was set to pit Kal-El up against the likes of Lex Luthor, Brainiac, and Doomsday with a script from Wesley Strick and Dan Gilroy. The project was eventually scrapped due to WB suffering many box office bombs and the film just didn’t make the cut. Maybe one day we could see the story told in some shape or form, or even Cage suiting up just one time.

  • First ‘Kraven The Hunter’ Set Footage Teases Car Chase

First ‘Kraven The Hunter’ Set Footage Teases Car Chase

Sony continues to expand their universe of Marvel characters without Spider-Man with upcoming projects like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven The Hunter. Morbius is finally hitting theaters soon, while Madame Web is still casting, but it looks like Kraven The Hunter is officially in production as some footage from the set has made its way online.

Twitter account KravenSource has shared footage from the set in London where production is underway. From the footage, it looks like Kraven is hanging off the side of the vehicle and attempting to break into it while also barefoot.

That is not actually Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who will be playing the titular character, but a stunt double. It’s likely that the second unit has begun to film the stuff that does not directly require the cast of the film to be present.

It looks like production will be picking up again on March 26th through March 29th at the London Wall. Due to a listing in production weekly, we know that Kraven is filming under the working title of “Spiral.”

The film is presumed to follow the origin of the famous Spider-Man villain, Kraven the Hunter, a famous big game hunter and explorer who has found himself at odds with the webhead multiple times, most famously in the storyline Kraven’s Last Hunt.

Kraven The Hunter is currently set to hit theaters on January 13th, 2023 with director J.C. Chandor at the helm. The film is set to star Johnson alongside Ariana DeBose, Russel Crowe, Fred Hechinger, Christopher Abbot, and Alessandro Nivola.

  • REVIEW: ‘Teen Titans Academy’ Vol 1 is Enjoyable, With a Few Missteps

REVIEW: ‘Teen Titans Academy’ Vol 1 is Enjoyable, With a Few Missteps

The Teen Titans have been a staple within the DC Universe since their inception at the hands of George Perez and Marv Wolfman, and the team has seen quite a few revamps throughout the years with its alternating roster. As excellent as those takes might’ve been, Future State and Infinite Frontier set out to do something different with Teen Titans Academy introducing a whole new generation of Titans.

Teen Titans Academy serves as the prequel for the events of Future State: Teen Titans, where we see the surviving Titans reel with a world-shattering event. Academy is the story leading up to that; this volume helps readers to become more acquainted with the students at the academy before most of them meet a grisly end.

The characters here are one of the story’s brightest gems, introducing us to students such as Summer Zahid, Totally Tubular, Gorilla Gregg, Bolt, Tress, Dane, Matt Price, Brick Pettirosso, and Stitch, a nonbinary ragdoll who is the apprentice of Doctor Fate. The most interesting of the bunch is the Batpack, a group of orphans rescued from an orphanage that was selling children off for use in science experiments. Megabat, Bratgirl, and Chupacabra were rescued by Nightwing and accepted into the academy. They are fun new additions and could technically be considered members of the Batfamily who are so ripe for their own solo title, it would be a shame to see them fade into the backlog of DC characters who aren’t getting their time to shine.

The story does fun things with the characters to really build them up and creatively explore their backgrounds. Alinta, aka Bolt, has a standout origin here, revealing Amanda Waller saved her not so long ago, and owes her big, like allegiance to Task Force X big. It feels like the writers figured they’d done enough though, after spotlighting a character for an issue it’s like the focus is ripped away from them and we don’t see them again for a while. Some of the characters here, booming with potential to explore, are kinda just left in the dust as it can feel as if the series is lacking direction. While the stories we are getting in this run with Stitch and the Batpack are great, it would be nice to see the other students like Miguel, Summer, and even Gorilla Gregg, the nephew of Grodd factored into the story more instead of being used when it is convenient to the story. While they are crucial it can at times feel like the OG titans are overwhelming the story just a bit, but the story does route focus back to the students.

While these solo stories are good, what I’d really like to see moving forward is the students coming together and learning to work as a team, I mean that’s the whole point of them being at the Teen Titans academy, after all. It would be much better to see the students actually working together and developing alongside each other, working much better in both their favor, as well as the story’s favor.

The main focus of the story is the mystery behind who the new Red X is; Red X is, of course, the brief alter-ego of Dick Grayson in the Teen Titans animated series who made his comic book debut in 2021. The mask has been picked up by another, coming and going from Titans tower as he pleases while the Titans freak out over it. The mystery would be more interesting if the series made an effort to get us to care about Red X. While he’s a cool-looking character, he is also a massive tool, and isn’t very likable with what they are doing with him here, crafting him as on a one-man crusade that just doesn’t seem noble enough to care.

Thankfully, this is only Vol. 1 of the story and is only comprised of the first few issues of the run. Even with there still being more to read, the story here shouldn’t feel unfinished and should be able to stand on its own. Teen Titans Academy was a creative path to navigate with a lot of potential to spotlight the new characters some may be meeting for the first time.

  • Chance Perdomo Joins ‘The Boys’ Spin-Off

Chance Perdomo Joins ‘The Boys’ Spin-Off

We just got our first look at the upcoming third season of The Boys, promising an equally raunchy and gory follow-up. The show has been a smash hit for Amazon Prime, as it already spawned its first spinoff The Boys: Diabolical, an animated anthology series featuring some fantastic one-off storylines. After what seemed a long tough development process things look to be moving along on the current second unnamed spinoff series.

Just last week it was announced that the unnamed spin-off of The Boys has lost Aimee Carrero and Shane Paul McGhie due to the long production process behind the scenes. The series has already found a replacement for McGhie, casting The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actor Chance Perdomo. Deadline states that this isn’t a straight recasting, as the project has seemingly seen some creative changes, specifically with the character McGhie had initially been set to play. There is currently no word on the character Carrero was going to tackle.

The series is set to see the best and brightest a new upcoming generation of supes has to offer at a Vought-run university. The characters will be put to the test as they compete against each other for the best contracts in order to be the next big hero. Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters will serve as showrunners on the series as well as executive produce. Butters and Fazekas will executive produce the series alongside Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Garth Ennis, and Craig Rosenberg, who wrote the initial script for the series.

  • ‘Ms.Marvel’ Trailer Includes First Look at Aramis Knight’s Red Dagger

‘Ms.Marvel’ Trailer Includes First Look at Aramis Knight’s Red Dagger

Ms.Marvel dropped its first official trailer today ahead of its June premiere, giving us our best look at Kamala Khan and the series overall. The footage gave us our first look at Kamala’s world and her obsession with superheroes, especially Captain Marvel. That is not all, as in a blink and you’ll miss it scene, we also got our first look at actor Aramis Knight in the series as the vigilante Red Dagger, a superhero from Pakistan.

The scene is brief but around the 1:25 mark, you can spot Knight as Red Dagger seemingly in combat with Kamala. Dagger jumps and narrowly dodges an incoming fist construct from Khan. The character is sporting some street clothes along with the red bandana he wears around his face, which doesn’t quite pop out at first like it did in the comics.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Kareem, better known as Red Dagger, first appeared in Ms.Marvel Vol. 4 #12 in October 2016. He was created by G. Willow Wilson and Mirka Andolfo. Kareem grew up in Badin, Pakistan with his mother who was good friends with Kamala’s aunt. He would come to live with her grandmother in Karachi, where he would suit up as Red Dagger at night and protect the people of the city. It looks like these scenes in particular take place in Pakistan, based on the language spotted on the sign near Kareem.

Ms.Marvel is set to start streaming on Disney+ on June 8th and will star Iman Vellani in the titular role. The series was written by Bisha. K Ali and featured directors like Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

  • Lucasfilm Executive Denies That Darth Maul Was Scrapped From ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Earlier Drafts

Lucasfilm Executive Denies That Darth Maul Was Scrapped From ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Earlier Drafts

Just yesterday The Hollywood Reporter posted a story detailing some creative issues that went on behind the scenes during the development of the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series. They reported that Darth Maul was originally set to be the main protagonist and that actor Ray Park was initially set to reprise his role as the fan-favorite character. Yet, it seems that an executive denounced this report. Bespin Bulletin provided a screengrab of a tweet from Pablo Hidalgo, a Lucasfilm Creative Executive, quoting a tweet regarding the report and denying it, stating that “A brown sun rises. Bullshit has been spilled“.

The report detailed that the Kenobi series saw a total creative overhaul when its core storyline seemingly was too similar to The Mandalorian. That led to Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni‘s involvement with the latter recommending the addition of the Inquisitors and Darth Vader. Maul being part of the series would’ve been an odd addition considering the story between him and Kenobi was concluded in Star Wars: Rebels. Vader and the Inquisitors make more sense, as it not only fits the timeline but there also has been hinted at that Kenobi and Vader had faced each other before their final confrontation in A New Hope.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to stream on Disney+ on May 25th and will feature the return of Ewan Mcgregor as the titular character. The series was directed by Deborah Chow and written by Joby Harold.

  • Christopher Priest Set to Write a New ‘Black Adam’ Comic Series

Christopher Priest Set to Write a New ‘Black Adam’ Comic Series

Black Adam is set to make his live-action debut in 2022 with his very own solo film starring the one and only Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. The film was just recently hit with a three-month delay, setting the July release all the way back to October 21st. Luckily, fans won’t have to wait too long to get some Black Adam action, as the character is set to receive his own solo run with some amazing creative talent behind it.

DC Comics announced this morning that Christopher Priest, best known for his work on Black Panther, Deathstroke, and Justice League will tackle the new series. He is joined by artist Rafa Sandoval, known for his work on Flash, Green Lantern, and most recently Teen Titans Academy. The series will follow Black Adam facing a near-death experience that makes the 5000-year-old fallen champion begin his search for a successor for his power. Priest shares his excitement for the new project:

Forgive the cliché, but I’ve rarely been this excited about a new project, DC has provided an amazing opportunity for me to explore and, to some degree, reimagine this character in a very new light while bringing new challenges and consequences to a man who has lived far too long and is desperate for redemption. Rafa Sandoval brings palpable voltage to every panel, bringing out my Kirby-Simonson Big Noise instinct as Rafa’s gifts take me to places I never knew I wanted to go. My only regret is we only have 22 pages a month for this.

    Christopher Priest

Black Adam #1 will hit shelves on June 21st, and it does sound like we’re getting a promising return for the character, which might even dissect the usual anti-hero in a way we might have at least expected. It makes you wonder if some elements on that are also inspired by the general direction the upcoming film is taking.

  • ‘Gotham Central’ Co-Writer Greg Rucka Joins ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’

‘Gotham Central’ Co-Writer Greg Rucka Joins ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’

A while back, it was announced that Matt Reeves would continue working in the world of Batman, but be jumping to a whole new medium, working alongside Bruce Timm and JJ Abrams on a new Batman animated series titled Batman: Caped Crusader. Timm would serve as showrunner while Reeves and Abrams would join the project as executive producers. Last month, it was announced fan-favorite comic book writer Ed Brubaker would be joining the series as head writer, and it seems like he brought a friend.

In a recent newsletter, Brubaker revealed that he’s been working on the Batman animated series, but he hasn’t been working alone, confirming Greg Rucka has joined the animated series as a writer.

“So, back on topic… what have I got for you this time? The past month or so I’ve done several podcasts or zoom interviews… I’ve been writing Friday and the 5th Reckless book while working on the Batman show with Bruce Timm. And also starting to adapt one of our books that I’ve got a star attached to, but more on that in the next few months, hopefully. On the Batman front, we only freelanced a few episodes in this first season, but I still managed to bring in a few great writers, one of who (whom?) used to work on Batman-related stuff with me back in the old days. I can’t tell you who it is, but his name rhymes with Craig Stucka and it was a lot of fun to work with him again. “

    Ed Brubaker

Both Rucka and Brubaker are known for their work together on Gotham Central, a comic book series that followed characters within the Gotham City police department and for which Rucka won an Eisner Award in 2004. In addition to his work on Gotham Central, Rucka also had a lengthy run on Detective Comics and also worked on the screenplay for the 2008 animated anthology, Batman: Gotham Knight. The team behind this animated is pretty great and the series is surely going to be something special with that much talent on this project.
