Marvel Studios ‘ETERNALS’: Who is Sersi?

With the Infinity Saga coming to a close, Marvel Studios is preparing to launch into an all-new, all-different era beginning with Phase 4. While several properties are going to serve as deeper dives into already established characters and worlds, Eternals is going to introduce new characters and change what we think we know about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Eternals were born in the mind of Jack Kirby as Marvel Comics “ancient aliens”: beings of immense power who had protected Earth since the beginning of time. Over the course of history, the Eternals and their enemies, the Deviants, worked their way into the religions and mythologies of many cultures gods and monsters, angels and devils and heroes and villains. Marvel Studios will certainly put their own spin on the characters, but we can still take an opportunity to get to know them here…in 400 words or less!

    Sersi | Characters | Marvel

Arguably the most well-known of the Eternals thanks to her extended time on the roster of the Avengers, Sersi has always enjoyed spending time among the humans, dating back to the time of the Trojan War when she made in her into the story of Odysseus’s 10 year trip back home, through the time of King Arthur and right up until her in New York City in modern times. While all Eternals possess essentially the same power set, Sersi honed her skills of casting illusions and whimsically changing matter from one thing to another. Her talents earned her the reputation as a witch among mankind. During her time with the Avengers, Sersi found herself in the midst of the Kree-Shi’ar War, the mutant conflict on Genosha and even in battles against her own people. She also found herself in a relationship with fellow Avenger, Dane Whitman, aka the Black Knight. The character first appeared as the mythological witch, Circe, in Strange Tales #109 and was retconned as an Eternal in Eternals #3.

Eternals Star Gemma Chan Shares New Details About Her Character Sersi

An interesting character thanks to her ability to seamlessly move back and forth between two very different worlds, Sersi will be one of the leads of 2021’s Eternals where she will be portrayed by Gemma Chan. Chan confirmed that her character will find herself in a bit of a love triangle in the film as long-standing rumors suggested. The film will take place over 7,000 years and cover two different timelines. One will see her long-standing relationship with Richard Madden’s Ikaris develop; the other will take place in the present day and see her pair up with Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman. It will be interesting to see not only what the pair get up to in this film but what the future holds for the two comic book Avengers!

Eternals will hit theaters November 5th!

Marvel's Eternals Is Hiding Its Villain: Here's Who We Think It Is

A Polarian Eternal and the cousin of the once and future Prime Eternal, Ikaris, Druig is a character study of nature vs. nurture and the possibility of inherent evil. The Lord of Flames and Nightmares, Druig has been a thorn in the side of his cousin, the other Eternals and a great disappointment to his family since his first appearance in Eternals #11. Dating back 1,000 plus years, Druig has always lusted for power and devised countless schemes, typically around the time that a Host of Celestials is coming to Earth, to take that power away from his fellow Eternals. While all Eternals are gifted with telepathy, Druig has refined his into a weapon by using to force people to relive their greatest fears in what amounts to a waking nightmare. In the 2006 Gaiman run, he used his powers to brainwash some of the Eternals who had yet to reawaken in hopes they would help him become the Prime Eternal. Simply put, Druig is the wolf in sheep’s clothing.

All Of Marvel's Eternals Character Designs Revealed In Concept Art
Concept art of Barry Keoghan as Druig, second from left.

Barry Keoghan is charged with bringing the duplicitous Druig to life in Chloe Zhao’s epic adventure. While very little has come to light about what role Druig will play in the film, his long-standing obsession with seizing power from others will almost certainly come into play. Whether we see him betray Ikaris or try to face off with a Celestial, we should keep our eye on this guy. While the Deviants will probably provide the punchable, obvious threat to the Eternals, it’s a safe bet that Druig will be working behind the scenes against his family.

Eternals is currently set to land in theaters on February 12, 2021.

  • Connecting Imaginary Dots: ‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’ Will Introduce Songbird

If you’ve never read an installment of Connecting Imaginary Dots, allow me to explain the idea. Connecting Imaginary Dots was the title I came up with for my speculation pieces when I was writing at MCU Exchange. These types of pieces basically allow me to unload a bunch of junk that’s circulating in my brain in a way that should never be confused for things I actually expect to happen. I basically take a bunch of facts that are almost always entirely unrelated and do my best to connect the dots with by stretching my imagination. In the past these types of pieces have resulted in me theorizing that the Spider-Man sequel which became Far From Home might end up being a team-up outing of Spidey and Hulk in the Savage Land;however, I also wrote one theorizing that Sterling K. Brown would be playing the father of Erik Killmonger in Black Panther LOOOOOONG before anyone else was considering it and one in which I theorized that Annette Bening was actually Mar-Vell when everyone else still thought Jude Law was playing the character. The bottom line is this: these are fun spec pieces that allow me to just be a fan. With that out of the way…

Filming is underway in Atlanta on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. While we don’t know an awful lot about the series, we do know it’s set to feature Wyatt Russell as John Walker, the U.S. Agent. In the comics, Walker is chosen by the government to become the new Captain America after Steve Rogers walks away from the role. From what we can tell, it seems like this series is going to develop along those lines as well and, to that end, some interesting set photos appeared online last night.

The photos taken at Duluth High School, located about 30 miles Northeast of Atlanta, clearly show a platform featuring the same logo that we saw on the costume of U.S. Agent in the concept art that was displayed in Disney+’s Expanding the Universe feature.

This is awesome. This is interesting. With filming only having been underway for a few weeks, this scene is probably taking place relatively early in the season and may be either John Walker’s introduction to the world or one of a series of events where the U.S. Government is introducing their Captain America to the nation one town at a time. I love it. I love all the possibilities. But what I love even more is the lady with the purple mohawk who appears to be connected to a stunt harness.

Now I have no idea who this person is. I don’t know if this person is a cast member, stunt double or someone who bought coffee for the guy in the plaid shirt. However, once I saw this person, it didn’t take my mind to start connecting imaginary dots and come up with a way for that person to be Melissa Gold, aka Songbird.

For those you who are unfamiliar with the character, Melissa Gold first appeared in 1979’s Marvel Two-In-One as Screaming Mimi, a member of Marvel Comics awesome wrestling federation, the UCWF (Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation), were super-powered beings were allowed to tussle in the squared circle. Following her stint in the UCWF, Gold next showed up on Helmut Zemo’s Masters of Evil and, eventually, the Thunderbolts.

While a lot of people aren’t going to like John Walker in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, he’s not the villain. That honor goes to Helmut Zemo, who will be played once again by the brilliant Daniel Bruhl. As we saw in Captain America: Civil War, Bruhl is plenty capable of devising a strategy to take on the Avengers by himself, but I think it’s possible that we might see Zemo bring in a band of mercenaries (I mean he has to get out of prison, right…oh, spoilers, there’s a prison riot in this series, BTW) to help announce his reentry into the MCU and, if he does, it would make sense that Gold, who was a key member of many of Zemo’s team, would be on it.

So why is she in this scene? Are Zemo and his Masters of Evil crashing the party? It’s possible. I know that earlier this week, the crew filmed an evacuation scene in a small town…could that be the result of Zemo and his crew blowing up the joint during the public reveal of the “new” Captain America? I have no idea, but it’s sure fun to think about. Obviously it’s less likely that this is Songbird than it is. It could be Rachel Leighton. It could be a crew member. I could be an extra. But this is what these pieces are for…fun speculation!

What do you think? Could The Falcon and The Winter Soldier introduce us to Melissa Gold and the Thunderbolts/Masters of Evil? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

  • Connecting Imaginary Dots: A ‘SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY’ Actor May Be Appearing in ‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’

Connecting Imaginary Dots: A ‘SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY’ Actor May Be Appearing in ‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’

For those of you unfamiliar with the Connecting the Imaginary Dots articles on Murphys Multiverse, basically this is for stuff we find, that is not officially confirmed, but are more speculative pieces based on other information and “proof” we are putting together to make our conclusions.

One of the things I enjoy about being on social media, following and reporting on these shows, is the interaction with other fans. And they are often the ones paying closest attention to what their favorite actors and actresses are getting up to and sharing it.

One such fan got in contact with me through Instagram yesterday with some very interesting information observed about actress Erin Kellyman, who you may remember as Enfys Nest in Solo: A Star Wars Story. The person asked to remain anonymous but here is their first DM sent to me below.

    Hmm…. interesting. Right?

Now, I am no naive dummy. I know not to just take what a random person who DMs me says at face value. So I, like any decent detective, go hunting for “proof.” Unfortunately, due to Instagram stories usually being temporary if not saved, I was not able to corroborate some key assertions my new anonymous friend makes. Such as, Erin being in Prague and Atlanta while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was filming. However this tipster did share the saved Instagram stories post by Erin’s friend, Dayna Browning, from about 9 weeks ago, in which she mentions Erin being “in two of the biggest franchises ever.”

    So… Star Wars and… ??

One quick check on who Erin herself was following and followed by on Instagram, revealed some other interesting supporting evidence.

Desmond Chiam is definitely in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and he is mutual follower with Erin. He also follows her brand spanking new Twitter account. (See below)

Next we look at Indya Bussey, also mutually following Erin. You may remember a recent Connecting the Imaginary Dots Charles wrote up which mentioned her being in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and she was definitely in Prague when they were filming there in March. She probably would have met Erin then if not earlier.

The other two mutual follows with Erin listed there are stunt people who are definitely working on, you can probably guess it, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. They are not listed in IMDb yet, but I’ve been following the stunt people enough to know they are part of that series team. And both of them were in Prague with the rest of the stunt team for off time when not filming.

Now let’s have a closer look at stuntwoman Hannah Scott in particular. She and Erin follow each other and it doesn’t appear to be from previous work. Erin also liked a few pertinent posts of Hannah’s: a sightseeing picture from when she was in Prague working on the series, and very important to note that Erin liked Hannah’s post of the Superbowl trailer for the 3 Marvel Disney plus shows. Coincidence? Possibly. But all together evidence is mounting to support my anonymous contributor’s claim.

And just one more little thing about that, whenever I’m trying to figure out who a stand in or stunt double might be doubling for, I look at heights to see if they’re close. Erin is 5′ 6″ while Hannah is 5’5 1/2″. Pretty close right? It might even be that Hannah hasn’t listed herself on IMDb yet because she is stunt doubling for Erin who hasn’t been officially announced yet! A stretch? Maybe, but it seems logical to me.

‘But who is Erin playing?’, you might be scratching your head asking about now. Well, as with this revelation that Erin Kellyman might very well be appearing in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, nothing is confirmed officially yet. But I believe we uncovered some intriguing evidence for what her role might be in another article which included set videos and images from the series a few months back.

An excerpt from Charles Murphy’s article:

“Brilliantly bright, long red curly hair”

Anyone else thinking what I’m thinking? Because I’m thinking that Erin just might be our red headed badass teaming up with those other seemingly suped up lady thugs, causing trouble for Bucky Barnes, and trading blows with John Walker in those videos that were provided in the previously linked article.

In a previous Connecting the Imaginary Dots segment, Charles speculated that Songbird, aka Melissa Gold, or Diamondback, aka Rachel Leighton, may be in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as well, based on some set images. This doesn’t seem to match up exactly with other evidence I’ve sited that Erin is in the series too. However it is to be considered along with another suggestion by Charles as we were discussing this. He speculates that perhaps she could be playing Sharon Ventura. She has ties to the Grapplers, who we suspect are the group of female assailants, as well as having connections to Ben Grimm in Fantastic Four, Ms. Marvel, and even She-Hulk. Sharon seems as likely a character as any to add to the mix.

So what do you think? Are we correct about Erin Kellyman being in the series? And what MCU character do you think she will play?

In closing, thank you again to my anonymous contributor for the heads up on this, and thank you to everyone who sends me tips and articles to check out and share with everyone else. Please feel free to DM me on either Instagram or Twitter if you ever have set images or other MCU newsworthy information to share and I will check it out. It is greatly appreciated.

  • ‘WANDAVISION’: “Wanda Changes Her Mind”

    ‘WANDAVISION’: “Wanda Changes Her Mind”

I, like many MCU fans, cannot wait for Phase 4 to get started. We’ve got so many amazing productions coming along; Black Widow, Eternals, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, etc. But today, we’re going to be discussing a show I’ve been looking forward to since it was first announced back at SDCC 2019:

Now, this show has been described as Part sitcom and part Marvel Studios spectacle. I think Charles Murphy wrote it best in What to Expect When it Comes to WandaVision and When to Expect it. However, just to give you all a small reminder, let’s take a look at the official synopsis for the show:

Marvel Studios’ “WandaVision” blends the style of classic sitcoms with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany)—two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

Now I have many theories when it comes to this show, but for this article, I’m going to be focusing on 1 of the titular characters for this theory:

    WANDA MAXIMOFF AKA SCARLET WITCH*

    *NOT YET.

Now, I’ve talked about Wanda Maximoff before on my first article here on Murphy’s Multiverse regarding the Theory of Evolution (How Mutants can join the MCU), and I really explained Wanda’s Trajectory since her debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron. So, I’m just going to give you a refresher as to what we know about Wanda’s journey because I really went into detail there.

    HER JOURNEY

Wanda Maximoff with Vision in Avengers: Infinity War.

So as I’ve mentioned before, since her debut back in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wanda’s gone through a lot of different changes over the last few MCU films. She has shown growth in both characterization and power, but that growth has been marked by a great amount of pain and suffering that she has had to go through in her life:

    • Her parents died when she was very young, long before the events of AoU.
    • She was experimented on by HYDRA with the mind stone.
    • Her brother, Quicksilver, died during the Battle of Sokovia.
    • Thousands of her people in Sokovia died.
    • Her home country was destroyed.
    • The people of the world hold her accountable for the deaths of dozens of citizens in Lagos, which triggered the Sokovia Accords and thus the events of Captain America: Civil War.
    • The outcome of the previous point forced her into hiding for 2 years until the events of Infinity War took place where she was forced to sacrifice Vision to save the universe, only to watch him be brought back so she could see him die a second time.
    • And then she herself died at the hands of Thanos’ snap.

The last time we saw Wanda Maximoff in action was during the final battle in Avengers: Endgame and at Tony Stark’s funeral with talking with Hawkeye. Speaking of Avengers: Endgame, the official Concept Art book: Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame – The Art of the Movie”, actually had this concept art image on the last page of the book:

Now there wasn’t any official description to what this image was about, but we can assume that Wanda is using her powers on Vision, her aura mainly focusing on the mind stone. It is important to show because sometimes, Marvel designs these concept arts that are necessarily used for one movie, but can be used for other projects later on (I.E. Zemo’s face mask from Civil War Concept Art). And it reminds us of the source of Wanda’s powers:

    THE MIND STONE

Now, before Thanos managed to destroy the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Endgame, the Mind Stone was one of the six Infinity Stones with the power to alter a person’s mind and thoughts. We know from the films that Wanda’s powers are derived from the Mind stone and that her powers can alter not just people’s minds, but can also affect the Mind Stone itself.Because she was able to destroy the Mind Stone on her own the first time during Infinity War, one can assume that she might be as equally if not slightly more powerful than the Mind Stone. Point is, the Mind Stone was destroyed…Right?

Anyone who saw my Twitter last week may have noticed this tweet:

    https://twitter.com/SuperheroTheor1/status/1301697416484335616?s=20

So, after a week of organizing my thoughts together, we can finally discuss my Eureka! moment. So, with that being said let’s take a look at these two shots of Vision in the ‘Disney+ Big Game Spot Trailer’.

Notice anything important in these two shots? (Apart from the fact that Vision is alive after he died in Infinity War?)

If the Mind Stone was destroyed during Avengers: Endgame, then how is it back in vision’s forehead for wandavision?

Really makes you think no? This premise leads me into my first theory for WandaVision:

THEORY: WANDAVISION WILL OCCUR WITHIN WANDA’S MIND

Remember how Wanda’s power managed to alter what a person’s mind could see? Well, I predict that the next person on the receiving end of Wanda’s Mind-Altering powers would be Wanda Maximoff herself. A vast majority of what we will see in this show (mainly the sitcom portions) will occur within Wanda’s mind. She will attempt to escape reality, unable to cope with the fact that Vision indeed did die and that there is no happy ending to her story. She will get so involved with her story in her mind that she might get lost with what’s real and what isn’t. This is something that has already been explored before in the House of M comic run.

Something that helps me believe in this is mainly Vision’s form in this show. Wanda wouldn’t know that the mind stone was destroyed because she was erased from existence before the Snap. So, if she created her own reality in her head, then she would envision Vision as to how she saw him last, with the mind stone in his head. Which leads me to believe that this Vision we see during the sitcom portion of the show will be fake, as are her children and the reality around her.

Now, this kind of power can be very dangerous, especially if left unchecked. And if her powers keep gradually increasing, they could eventually get out of hand and affect not just her reality but others’ as well. So, she may want to have someone who could help her control her powers (or mainly keep them in check). But that’s another theory for another time!

  • Marvel Studios ‘ETERNALS’: Who is Gilgamesh?

Marvel Studios ‘ETERNALS’: Who is Gilgamesh?

While several properties are going to serve as deeper dives into already established characters and worlds, Eternals is going to introduce new characters and change what we think we know about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 10 Worst Ever Avengers – Page 5

One of the most enjoyable aspects of Jack Kirby’s Eternals is the idea that these ancient beings worked their way into the mythologies and religious stories of cultures around the world. In the case of the Eternal Gilgamesh, Kirby reshaped the legend of one of literature’s first heroes. The Epic of Gilgamesh was written in ancient Mesopotamia and gave an incredible account of the real life ruler of the ancient city of Uruk (modern day Iraq) and is considered the earliest great work of literature to have survived to “modern day.” The story includes dozens of archetypal characters and events that Kirby cleverly took advantage of when he decided to add the great hero to the roster of Eternals beginning in Eternals #13. Kirby used the idea that Gilgamesh was such a legendary character to an interesting end. Gilgamesh’s prominent place in the pantheon of human heroes meant that he must have been spending a lot of time among the humans, something that was frowned upon by Zuras, the Prime Eternal of that time. As punishment for his all-to-frequent meddling in humanity’s affairs rather than saving them from the shadows, Gilgamesh was ordered not to leave the Eternal city of Olympia again and, after a time, became known as The Forgotten One. Eventually, however, the Eternals need for his incredible physical strength (Gilgamesh’s strength was unparalleled, even among the other immensely powerful Eternals) in their battle against the Deviants brought him out of Olympia and back into the world. Gil served as an Avenger and struck up a great friendship with Hercules, a hero for whom he was sometimes mistaken, and regained his status as a legendary hero.

Concept art of Ma Dong-seok as Gilgamesh, third from right.

South Korean action star Ma Dong-seok has taken on the physically formidable task of bringing Gilgamesh to the big screen. The concept art for Ma’s character gives a very different vibe from either his earliest appearances or his recent redraws. It’ll be interesting to see how much of the hero’s past factors into the movie but there is no doubt that Ma is going to be smashing heads when we see him in Eternals!

Eternals is currently expected to hit theaters on February 12, 2021.

  • ‘BLACK WIDOW’: How ‘MULAN’ Might Alter Disney’s Release Strategy

‘BLACK WIDOW’: How ‘MULAN’ Might Alter Disney’s Release Strategy

Well, this Labor Day weekend was certainly interesting to say the least. In case you haven’t been paying attention, let me bring you up to speed. During this Labor Day weekend, two motion pictures dropped across two vastly different formats: Mulan over on Disney+ via Premier Access and Tenet wherever theaters were open.

Now, after weeks of speculation over what course of action the average movie-goer would take, we finally have our results!

    The Results:

    MULAN:

Let’s start with the Disney+ Premier Access Experiment. So as of when this article is being written (Tuesday Night), Mulan’s official numbers have not yet been released by Disney. However, it is important to note 4 things that have been observed over the last few days:

    1. In a recent Yahoo! Finance report: “preliminary data shows that ‘Mulan’ at least prompted a 68% spike in Disney+ app downloads from Friday, Sept. 4 through Sunday, Sept. 6, compared to one weekend prior.” The report also states that “Consumer spending in the app also spiked 193%, which can obviously be attributed to customers paying the $30 ‘Mulan’ fee.”

    2. When the stock market opened on Tuesday following Labor Day Weekend, Disney Stocks rose back to February Levels prior to on a Streaming-Based Analyst Upgrade, amassing a 2% increase on it’s stock in 1 day. The report from Deadline describes how “Disney has made several moves to position itself for the overall shift to streaming…” where the article went on to describe multiple “key advantages” Disney had in its favor, including: “an inevitable shattering of today’s exclusive theatrical window…” which will “make room for new premium video-on-demand windows that enhance monetization of film studio output and add consumer utility to the Disney+ service.”

    3. On September 9th, The Walt Disney Company participated in a Citi 2020 Global Technology Conference, where they have stated that Disney was, quote, “very pleased with the initial Mulan numbers of the 4-day weekend and that it was the best way to release the film considering that California and New York were closed, as well as the statistics that showed very low interest on going to a cinema at the moment”

    4. Lastly, according to SambaTV, in an unofficial rundown of the numbers, about 1.12 million US households downloaded Mulan over the course of the 4 days (Friday until Monday), which would amass at least $33.5 million domestic for Mulan’s Opening Weekend. (Credit to @Great_Katzby)

So as of right now, while the official numbers have yet to be released, this is a clear indication that things seem to be pointing in the right direction for Disney.

    TENET:

Now, Tenet managed to amass a $20 million Domestic Box Office Opener across a 13-day period which includes early access screenings, Canada Box Office Numbers and the General US Domestic Box Office across Labor Day Weekend.

Now, the $20 million opener can be viewed from two different perspectives:

-Glass Half-Full: Considering the pandemic and the heavy limitations and restrictions going against it, Warner Bros. did its best and should be commended.

-Glass Half-Empty: Warner Bros. did not amass as much money as they had hoped and the risk Warner Bros played did not pay off.

It is important to note that globally (counting the domestic box office), Tenet made $150 million worldwide.

SO WHAT DO THESE RESULTS ALL MEAN FOR THE RELEASE OF FUTURE FILMS? (SPECIFICALLY BLACK WIDOW)

I know this is probably the thing you’ve been looking forward to for this whole article, so I think I can finally make a plausible theory. Before we get into my theory, let’s discuss two polls I placed on my Twitter, where I asked you guys what you would consider to be the better option for Black Widow’s release and if Marvel Studios released Black Widow this year, which format would you prefer/feel safe watching it? And here are those results:

    https://twitter.com/SuperheroTheor1/status/1302981943097782272?s=20

    https://twitter.com/SuperheroTheor1/status/1302984323365244930?s=20

So, the final results indicate that 84% would want the film to be released in 2020 rather than a delay to 2021 (16%). And a 55% of you believe that a combination of both Disney+ Premium Access & Select Movie Theaters would be a feasible comprise for this film’s release.

So, moment of truth. After all of this, and taking into consideration every factor possible, here’s my theory:

THEORY: IT MIGHT RELEASE ON BOTH

Now hear me out. I was on the fence regarding how Black Widow might be released, but after seeing the indicators in Disney’s stock rise and their unprecedented move to make a boost in streaming, it all seems to indicate that Disney is certainly working on pushing these films for a sort of hybrid release for not just Black Widow, but for other films going forward. Having Deadline describe Disney’s move this weekend as “an inevitable shattering of today’s exclusive theatrical window…” which will “make room for new premium video-on-demand windows that enhance monetization of film studio output and add consumer utility to the Disney+ service”, as was stated earlier in the article, pretty much tells me that Disney plans to make more “Premier Access” releases on Disney+, but that they could also make the move to release films in select theaters. Not only that, but their Citi Conference Call clearly shows Disney was heavily pleased with the results of the Premier Access Experiment.

The biggest factor affecting the movie industry right now is the COVID-19 pandemic. If anything, it showed studios that people are still not ready to go to indoor movie theaters, risking their lives and the lives of their loved ones to go watch a movie.

So as of right now, where we stand, and if the pandemic rate in the US remains constant or worsens, chances are we might see a PVoD + Theater hybrid option for upcoming films.

  • Marvel Studios ‘ETERNALS’: Who is Makkari?

Marvel Studios ‘ETERNALS’: Who is Makkari?

With the Infinity Saga coming to a close, Marvel Studios is preparing to launch into an all-new, all-different era beginning with Phase 4. While several properties are going to serve as deeper dives into already established characters and worlds, Eternals is going to introduce new characters and change what we think we know about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Eternals were born in the mind of Jack Kiby as Marvel Comics “ancient aliens”: beings of immense power who had protected Earth since the beginning of time. Marvel Studios will certainly put their own spin on the characters, but we can still take an opportunity to get to know them here…in 400 words or less!

Everything you need to know about Marvel's Makkari

The speedster of the Eternals, Makkari’s comic book history actually predates any of his peers. A series of retcons allowed a Golden Age character named Mercury, who first appeared in 1940’s Red Raven Comics #1, to be reworked into Makkari. The character was introduced into the modern day in Eternals #5 where he joined fellow Eternal Sersi in a NYC battle against the Deviants, the bitter foes of the Eternals. Makkari played an integral role in Neil Gaiman’s 2006 run in which all of the Eternals fell victim to the machinations of Sprite and had forgotten who they were. Living in the city as Mark Curry, Makkari was visited by Ikaris who was the first of the group to regain his memories. Eventually regaining his memories and powers, Makkari was duped by Sprite into opening a path to the Dreaming Celestial, one of the great Space Gods whose act of defiance left him trapped beneath San Francisco for centuries. Unconscious, Makkari began to commune with the Dreaming Celestial, a job traditionally filled by Ajak, and eventually working as the prophetic mouthpiece of the entity.

Actress Lauren Ridloff will bring the speedster to life in Eternals, though with some significant changes to the comic book characters. Unlike the comics, Makkari will be presented as a female in the film (joining Ajak as gender-swapped members of the team); additionally, Ridloff is deaf and will be portraying the character as such. While it remains to be seen, it’s been speculated that Makkari will, as in the comics, communicate with the Celestials at some point, either sharing or taking the job from Salma Hayek’s Ajak.

Marvel Studios ‘ETERNALS’: Who is Ikaris?

    Ikaris | Characters | Marvel

Ikaris, who first appeared in Eternals #1, is one of the oldest and most powerful Eternals in existence. After tens of thousands of years of protecting humanity from the Deviant threat, Ikaris earned the title of Prime Eternal, making him the leader of the Eternals of Earth and responsible for the formation of one of the Eternals most fascinating gifts: the Uni-Mind. The Uni-Mind merges both the will and intelligence of each Eternal into a collective consciousness, something they typically only do to deliberate on matters on great consequence. Born a Polarian Eternal like Ajak, Ikaris, whose birth name is unknown, has lived all over the world during his life, including Greece where he married a human woman with whom he had a son: the Icarus of legend who flew too close to the sun. Ikaris took the name of his son in his memory and then spent a great portion of his life preparing for the coming of the Fourth Host of Celestials. More recently when all the Eternals lost their memories of who they were, it was Ikaris (using the name Ike Harris), who set out to help restore them. Like all the Eternals, Ikaris has the ability to reduce himself down to atoms and store them for long periods of time before reassembling himself or being reassembled. In this way, the Eternals are immortal.

Eternals Star Richard Madden Says Filming MCU Movie Was Physically Draining

Ikaris will be portrayed by the King in the North, Richard Madden. Set photos of Madden seem to show him facing off with Celestials on Earth, meaning we might just be seeing the Fourth Host, the group of Celestials who come to Earth to pass final judgement on the species they created, in the film! Madden’s Ikaris will be one of the film’s primary leads and his story will include a love triangle between  Ikaris, Gemma Chan’s Sersi and Kit Harrington‘s Dane Whitman.

Eternals will hit theaters November 5th!

First introduced in Eternals #2 (1976), Ajak is one of the Polar Eternals, a group of the immortal beings who was born near Siberia. While he was mistaken for many heroes over the year, including the Greek warrior Ajax, he more importantly was believed to be the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl and the Incan god Tecumotzin. It was in this guise that he made his introduction into the comics during the “Tomb of the Gods” arc that it is believed will serve as at least a partial inspiration for the film. Ajak has always demonstrated a deep understanding of the Celestials as well as being able to converse with them and, in his introduction, served as the expository device for the grand history and plan of the Celestials, including their return to judge their creations!

Concept art of Salma Hayek as Ajak (4th from left)

Salma Hayek will bring the character of Ajak to life in Marvel Studios Eternals. We know the character will serve as the spiritual leader of the group and, true to the comics, she will serve as the point of communication between the Eternals and the Celestials. Given the character’s comic book history with the Space Gods, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Hayek’s character given the honor of explaining the hidden history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the audience.

Marvel Studios Eternals is currently set to hit theaters February 12, 2021!
