  • ‘Avatar’ Re-Release Earns Over $70M at Global Box Office

‘Avatar’ Re-Release Earns Over $70M at Global Box Office

The re-release of Avatar in the buildup to the highly anticipated James Cameron-directed sequel has been a large financial success for Disney and 20th Century Studios. The past weekend alone has brought in nearly $4 million from 51 different international markets. This moves the total earned to $23.3 million across North America and $71.9 million globally. Overall, this should be a promising sign that Avatar: The Way of Water can become another major needle-mover at the box office. It also has the best chance to beat out the current 2022 earnings record-holder in Top Gun: Maverick.

The success of the Avatar is good news for Disney in relation to the unmitigated flop that has been David O. Russell’s Amsterdam. Despite the star-studded cast led by Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington, the film has bombed internationally only earning $3.5 million in 30 international markets. And the domestic release has barely been any better in raking in only $6.5 million in North America’s opening weekend.

The biggest winners at the box office currently have been in the romantic comedy and horror genres. Ticket to Paradise, starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts, has met a respectable $60 million in international box office earnings. The movie continues the trend of romantic comedies mildly returning to prominence at theaters (i.e. The Lost City and Marry Me), though that is in relation to how much the genre has recently been in dire straits theatrically and is assumedly more boosted from the massive A-list talent starring in them.

Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures’ Smile has been the largest winner at the box office having earned $17.5 million globally, which is up 19% from its premiere. This totals the global earnings to approximately $90 million, which is a massive boon with the $17 million budget. Overall, it’s continued the trend of Paramount being far and away the biggest winner in the theatrical film industry in 2022.

  • Tom Welling Boards ‘Supernatural’ Prequel, ‘The Winchesters’

Tom Welling Boards ‘Supernatural’ Prequel, ‘The Winchesters’

Tom Welling is returning to the CW. The Winchesters producers and cast were on hand at New York Comic Con over the weekend, where they revealed that Tom Welling has joined the cast of the Supernatural prequel.

Welling is set to play the recurring character of Samuel Campbell, a character played by Mitch Pileggi in Supernatural. He is the father of Mary, played by Meg Donnelly, and is the patriarch of the Campbell Hunting family. He has taught his daughter everything she knows and is said to be a veteran Hunter that prefers actions over words; taking the “his way or the highway” approach to things. This, of course, creates a divide between him and his daughter — one they’ll need to fix when the duo teams up to save the world. Welling will debut as the character in the show’s seventh episode.

“When we were discussing casting the iconic character of Samuel Campbell, everyone felt it had to be someone who could step into the role and provide instant gravitas and history. Jensen and Danneel brought up the idea of Tom Welling and the second his name was mentioned we all knew he was the perfect person for the part. Tom is a fantastic actor and wonderful human, and we are so excited to be welcoming him to The Winchesters and the Supernatural Family.”

    Robbie Thompson

The Winchesters hails from the Supernatural trio of Robbie Thompson, Jensen Ackles and Danneel Ackles. Thompson serves as a writer and showrunner on the series that focuses Dean and Sam Winchester’s parents – John and Mary. Ackles’ Dean narrates the prequel series that is being called an “epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love but the entire world.”

The Winchesters will premiere on the CW on Tuesday, October 11th.

  • Charlie Cox Calls ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ a “Whole New Deal”

Charlie Cox Calls ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ a “Whole New Deal”

Even in the midst of the Multiverse Saga, accepting Multiversal Variants continues to prove difficult for fans. While an entire series can be built around a Variant of a dead character hanging out with a genderswapped Variant of himself and meeting a villain who defends the timeline against Variants of himself, apparently there can only be one Daredevil. An All-New, All-Different Daredevil recently appeared in the eighth episode of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, full of new tricks, a new personality and a new suit, but the debate as to whether or not this MCU Daredevil is the same guy fans met in Netflix’s Defenders-verse continues.

However, as fans of the Netflix series continue to search for definitive evidence, star Charlie Cox continues to make it sound as though it’s going to be harder and harder to find. In an interview with ET following D23, Cox seemed pretty firm in his belief that this Matt Murdock isn’t EXACTLY that Defenders-verse guy. When asked about the recently announced Daredevil: Born Again, Cox spoke pretty plainly, saying, “Kevin has been very clear about it being Season 1, not a Season 4, so it’s a whole new deal.” Fans shouldn’t need enhanced senses to hear what’s being said by Cox there. Even so, Cox continued on indicating that he’d like to see Murdock’s journey retold back to the origin, as often happens in the comics.

What’s great about that is that we potentially get to tell some of the stories over and over again, in the same way that they do in the comics. Every now and then they start back in the beginning of Murdock’s journey as a little boy and they tell the whole origin story again, so maybe we’ll get to do that. I don’t know.

    Charlie Cox

Not even Peter Parker got his origins retold as he joined the MCU and given the way the concept of Variants works, it’s hard to imagine a new Matt like the one seen in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law diverged from Netflix Matt as far back as the hero’s origin story. Cox’s words paint a pretty clear picture of where he believes Feige stands, who would of course have FINAL say on just how different the anyo one Variant is from another. However, until Feige says it to a camera, plenty of fans will be reticent to believe Cox’s words. Whatever the case, Daredevil is in the MCU and Cox is having a blast in the role. So no matter which Variant you think you’re getting, you should be happy!

  • NYCC: Oscar Isaac Teases More ‘Moon Knight’ in the MCU’s Future

NYCC: Oscar Isaac Teases More ‘Moon Knight’ in the MCU’s Future

We’ve long wondered what the future might be for Moon Knight. There still hasn’t been an announcement for a second season even if the first one ended on a perfect note to continue the storyline of the newly introduced personality Jake Lockley. Still, we’re still anticipating some kind of update on the project.

Luckily, it seems that Moon Knight star Oscar Isaac was asked during a panel at New York Comic-Con if we can expect a second season. While he plays coy on anything definite, he uses the interesting wording of “system” in regard to the Marvel Cinematic Universe return of Moon Knight.

All I can say is that this isn’t thee last we’ve heard of the system that is Moon Knight.

    Oscar Isaac

We’ll likely have to wait a bit to see if a second season is potentially part of Phase 6, as the fifth phase has seemingly been completely mapped out already but things can shift around if needed, especially with Armor Wars now a cinematic release opening a spot for a Disney+ series. There were some hints by director Mohamed Diab in the past but he quickly backtracked on it after word started spreading.

We’ll have to see if they are building up to it and potentially what the future has in store for the character. There have been rumors that Moon Knight may appear in an upcoming film,b ut there’s not been a definite tease on that outside of some rumblings online. Still, it would be strange to bring in Isaac into the MCU for a single season on Disney+ and not further explore the character in the projects.

  • New ‘One Piece’ BTS Set Photos Tease How They Filmed on the Going Merry

New ‘One Piece’ BTS Set Photos Tease How They Filmed on the Going Merry

As production on Netflix’s upcoming live-action One Piece has wrapped some time ago, the news well has certainly dried up. We still know very little about when we might expect a release or even an official glimpse at the cast or set beyond what we got earlier this year. Still, even if Tudum didn’t give us something to hold on to, it seems that a few new photos have found their way online to tie us over.

While it doesn’t reveal anything new for the One Piece series, it does give us a glimpse behind-the-scenes on how exactly they tackled shots of the cast on the Going Merry. As shared by @dogy_logy, we get a look on how they made use of various screens to film anything they needed to on the stationary version of the boat.

It looks like they needed quite a few cranes to keep every element they needed stationary. They likely used a screen that will represent them being on the ocean or near an island of some kind. Of course, we don’t know how much time they’ll spend on their iconic ship mostly due to uncertainty how they may have structured the season.

Still, it looks like we can expect some fun shenanigans on the ship and hopefully the team behind the One Piece series will keep those fun moments of the crew just interacting alive with the adaptation. Of course, big parts of their early ventures take place on the various islands of the East Blue which we’re still hoping to get a better look at in the near future besides Baratie and Windmill Village.

  • ‘Squid Game’ Director Met With ‘Shang-Chi’s Tony Leung

‘Squid Game’ Director Met With ‘Shang-Chi’s Tony Leung

Many have been wondering what exactly they could expect from the upcoming second season of Squid Game. The first season of the Korean drama made waves on Netflix and has become an international hit. So, expectations are high for what they might accomplish by further developing the concept and exploring what other dangerous games might be in store.

While there has been no real cast confirmation, creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk has already pointed out that he hopes to have the next season’s release in 2024. Not only that, but he hopes to have Leonardo DiCaprio potentially join in the future. Yet, it seems that isn’t the only superstar that could have a potential appearance on the Netflix series.

Chinese-Canadian actress Carina Lau has shared a curious post on her Instagram account that includes director Dong-hyuk meeting up with Tony Leung. The Hong Kong superstar has made quite a substantial career and recently even joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. So, a meeting with the director may open up the possibility that he might have a role in the second season.

It’s mostly the “Ready for Squid Game” with the tag that will catch the eyes of many wondering if the actor might appear in the sequel. Of course, anything is possible and the Korean project may start branching out as we explore the concept of these games across the world. Squid Game‘s name and concept explore traditional children’s games from South Korea, which is a simple concept that can be adapted worldwide. so, we’ll have to see if he gets cast once they start getting production ready for the sequel season.

  • New ‘Madame Web’ Set Video Teases Fight With a New Spider-Man

New ‘Madame Web’ Set Video Teases Fight With a New Spider-Man

The star-studded and again-delayed Madame Web has not had a particularly secretive production. Recently, a batch of set photos allegedly show Tahar Rahim’s stunt double going up against Dakota Johnson’s and Celeste O’Connor’s characters. The photos clearly show Rahim’s stunt double dressed in what appears to be an alternate Spider-Man suit.

Now, there is a new video of what appears to be O’Connor’s stunt double filming what could be the same or similarly-set scene. The double appears to be harnessed up to apparently “fight a new Spider-Man.” As previously noted, the “new Spider-Man” that appeared in previous photos may be Ezekiel Sims, a character who, in the comics, had similar powers to Spider-Man, wore a Spidey suit (that looked significantly different than the one seen on set), and occasionally clashed with other Spider-related people. Whether Rahim is Sims or not is yet to be seen.

There may be a possibility that yet another “new Spider-Man” is off-screen in the leaked set video. Not a lot is known about Madame Web, but many rumors and theories point to a multiversal connection. That is not too surprising given the titular character’s connection in the comics, and Sony’s attempts to get audiences excited about its own universe of specifically Spider-Man-related characters apart from the much more popular Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse probably already did it better, Sony may be introducing a type of live-action Spider-Verse of its own. After the Spiderpeople crossover in the MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, there is no ruling out that Sony’s characters may pop up at some point in Phases 5 or 6 of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.

Madame Web is scheduled to hit theaters on February 16, 2024.
