  • First Recording of ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Black Panther’s Voice Leaked

First Recording of ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Black Panther’s Voice Leaked

Marvel’s Avengers just had a brand new patch that fixed some lingering bugs and adds a few more Quality-of-Life changes. Of course, many are wondering where is the next update with content? A recent tweet by @mmmmmmmmiller may give some insight into what is happening behind the scenes. We actively always wondered if the content is updated in one go but it looks like a lot of DLC characters are patched in alongside regular updates. He shared two audio files from patches 1.3.4 and 1.3.5. You’ll notice that this is the exact same audio line spoken by two voices. The first is just a placeholder with the second from an actual voice actor.

We do not know how much of Kate Bishop or even Hawkeye was added in past updates. There is a good chance this is their way to avoid a massive content drop with the download taking hours to complete. Besides that, it also means they are already working on the third character for the DLC, so we will find out who voices him in or after the upcoming War Table video. Also, we still can’t rule it out that that we may see the AIM Cloning Labs sooner rather than later, as the Substation was patched ahead of the weekly reset on Thursday. According to the last two streams, they are currently focusing on bug testing the game. Kate seems to be in the final stages of development. They are testing out any potential issues or bugs before launching, which is why it got delayed. The same goes for the first Omega Level-threat AIM Labs.

We do not know how far along Clint is, but if they are already working on Black Panther, there might be a good chance he is far into development. In one stream, Crystal Dynamics highlighted that they have to adhere to the two-week rule before and after recording, so that also delays a lot. Sadly, we still have no official update or timeline for when we can expect DLC. I hope that we get the War Table video soon, as they did tease it would come before Thanksgiving. As Paul Tassi pointed out in his Forbes article, the game is at a low point when it comes to player count, most notably on PC. It’ll be a tough road ahead, but as soon they start getting consistent updates out, I think we’ll see a growth in the player base. It would just be good to get that ball rolling.

  • ‘Umbrella Academy’ Renewed for Season 3 at Netflix

‘Umbrella Academy’ Renewed for Season 3 at Netflix

The second season of Netflix’s hit show Umbrella Academy, based on the comics by Singer/Songwriter Gerard Way, released its second season in late July and received critical praise for approving upon much of what was already great within the first season. For a while, many have wondered if the show was to come back for a third season and the long-term radio silence from Netflix didn’t bode well considering their track record this year.

It’s now being reported the show will indeed return for a third season on the popular streaming service. The second season finale found the team sent back to the present day after being trapped in the 60s for over a year. After escaping the apocalypse, they returned to find the timeline altered by their actions causing the Umbrella Academy to cease to exist with the new and mysterious Sparrow Academy in their place. With the reveal of the time altered Sparrow Academy at the end of the shows previous season, it wouldn’t be much of a far cry to assume that they’ll be adapted the Hotel Oblivion storyline, a fairly recent addition to the source material, having been released only in June of 2019.

The third season will begin production in February, will consist of 10-hour long episodes and will see the return of stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, Justin H. Min, Aidan Gallagher, Ritu Arya, David Casteneda, Emmy-Raver-Lampman and Robert Sheehan.

  • MCU Phase 4 Schedule Still Revolves Around Story Continuity

MCU Phase 4 Schedule Still Revolves Around Story Continuity

Finally, after a long wait, we got some more information on WandaVision. Entertainment Weekly released an issue that featured some brand new images from the upcoming Disney+ show, as well as some insights from a set visit. Sadly, it still did not include a specific release date for the series. In the article full of teases, one particular mention about the pandemic has caught her eye.

With the pandemic shuffling release dates, Marvel is also taking extra care to ensure the new schedule won’t spoil story continuity.

We have wondered about the importance of continuity with all these delays. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s largest selling point is that everything is connected. Yet, it also meant that every upcoming series or film was affected by any delay. Black Widow was initially going to kickstart the franchise’s fourth phase last May. Now, the film won’t release until next year. WandaVision has taken over that position. Yet, it was going to be the second MCU Disney+ series after Falcon and the Winter Soldier that was postponed into the next year. It was going to release in August and is a contender to have some stronger ties to Black Widow. There could still be a chance that it will not release until the first Phase 4 film finally hits theaters next May.

Yet, if we look back at the overall release dates, Eternals was going to premiere this month. It is now going to release after Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which once held the May 2021 release date. So, it would mean that these two films might be the most independent from the overarching storyline of Phase 4 but still feed into later releases. We do not know what the plan is for the other Disney+ shows that seem to be independent for now, such as Ms. Marvel or She-Hulk. This news is important to keep in mind for future releases, as it means that as long as the pandemic delays cinema reopenings, we might be seeing more from the MCU getting pushed back. It also means that Marvel Studios will have to reshuffle all the Disney+ shows to stay within continuity.

  • STAR WARS: Who is Doctor Aphra?

STAR WARS: Who is Doctor Aphra?

Chelli Lona Aphra is a character that was first introduced in Darth Vader #3 back in 2015, a series that is set in the period between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. She is a rogue, morally dubious archeologist that was apprehended and recruited (against her will) by Darth Vader, as he intended to gather a few resources of his own, unbeknown to the Emperor. She was then teamed up with two droids, 0-0-0 (Triple-Zero) and BT-1 (Beetee) that can only be classified as the evil versions of both C-3PO and R2-D2. Even after swearing allegiance to the Dark Lord of the Sith, Aprha was always trying to escape his grasp, and every mission she was sent on became a chance of doing just that.

While trying to rescue Darth Vader after the rebellion managed to crash his ship on Vrogas Vas, Chelli is captured by Princess Leia, Han, and Luke, and taken aboard the Millenium Falcon as she is taken to Sunspot Prison. The prison is then raided and Princess Leia, alongside Sana Starros, ends up needing Aphra’s help to escape. This wasn’t the last time she crossed paths with some of the heroes of the Rebellion as she, later on, ended up partnering with Luke Skywalker as they found themselves in Ktath’atn, The Screaming Citadel, home of a Queen that’s highly evocative of Bram Stoker’s take on vampires. After Darth Vader decided she was no longer of use, he killed her…or so he thought. Aphra managed to escape but above all was successful in making Vader thing she had indeed died, which prevented him from following her any further.

Through her following endeavors, she developed a very, shall we say, complicated relationship with an Imperial Captain named Magna Tolvan. Aphra and Tolvan found themselves on opposite sides of the conflict, but there was an obvious connection between the two of them from the start. Magna had trouble dealing with Chelli’s more carefree personality and her constant romantic innuendos, as she tried maintaining the usual stoicism the Empire seems to imprint its operatives with. After a long cat-and-mouse game, both finally succumbed to their feelings towards each other and kissed for the first time in the middle of battle.

Doctor Aphra is probably the first major queer Star Wars character and the fact that she’s also of Asian heritage (is there is such a thing in the Star Wars universe), so the possibility of bringing her character to a more mainstream medium was always seen as an incredible opportunity in terms of representation. Star Wars was always about accepting that what makes us different is what makes us, as a community, stronger. The Empire has always been focused on uniformity and monotony but the good guys have always been about diversity and difference. Different races, different species, different beliefs coming together for the common goal. Getting Chelli Aphra on a live-action Star Wars project would be not only an intelligent and progressive move, it would be the right one.

  • Insomniac Adding ‘Spider-Man’ PS4 Save File Transfer to Remaster

Insomniac Adding ‘Spider-Man’ PS4 Save File Transfer to Remaster

We are only a few days away from the release of Spider-Man: Miles Morales. It’ll be one of the few launch titles for the PlayStation 5 to ring in a new generation of gaming. Also, some can get their hands on the Remaster edition of the original 2018 game. There was some controversy as Insomniac revealed that their Peter Parker would be getting a new redesign. It stirred quite some controversy. Not just that, there was also the issue that Spider-Man: Remastered would not be compatible with the original’s save file.

Players weren’t happy that they couldn’t go through the campaign on New Game+ with the Remaster. Insomniac didn’t waste any time and has now revealed that they will be adding a future update that would let players use their PlayStation 4 save file with the Remaster.

It’s a great move by Insomniac, as it was quite the discussion point in the community after the reveal. The remaster might be the first one to offer this function, as the PlayStation 4 remaster of The Last Of Us did not provide this update to use the previous generation’s save file. Keep in mind that this update will not be added until Thanksgiving, so you will have to wait until then before you can replay or continue the campaign from the original. This tweet is also the first confirmation that the three new suits might not have been added in the PS4 version and were going to be exclusive to the remaster. No matter what, this is fantastic news for those hoping to continue where they left off. It’ll just be very jarring when Pete’s face changes when you continue mid-campaign.

  • Leslye Headland’s ‘Star Wars’ Series Could be About Doctor Aphra

Leslye Headland’s ‘Star Wars’ Series Could be About Doctor Aphra

We reported a few days ago that a short description was released online that gave us some insight into Leslye Headland‘s upcoming Star Wars series. It teased that it may be part of a yet to be explored time within the canon. It will feature martial arts action and be an action thriller. We still have no exact detail on what direction this show will take. The only real official information was that it is going to be female-led, which also opens up the question if we have met the character before. Now, in an interview with Influencer Fantastic Frankey, Headland offered a bit more insight into the project.

In the interview, she confirmed that it will be part of the galaxy far far away that we have yet to explore. The detail that truly stands out is that it will be an Indiana Jones-style journey. This reveal might be our biggest hint at what the focus of the series will be. We discussed it, and there might be a chance the show focuses on Doctor Aphra, that like Doctor Jones, is also an archeologist.

The character made her debut in Kieron Gillen‘s Star Wars: Darth Vader run. She became such a popular character and got her own series. She was recruited by Darth Vader, who wanted her dead once he was finished with her. Aphra managed to escape without him knowing and wouldn’t find out until much later. Currently, she is the only comic book character to get a solo title. It is also very noteworthy that she is one of the franchises’ most high-profile LGBT characters who fell in love with an Imperial Officer named Tolvan. This would be a great move by Lucasfilm in dealing with inclusion issues. Keep in mind, this is just speculation for now.

  • ‘THE MANDALORIAN’ Chapter 10: Filoni and Favreau Pull No Punches About Their Plodding Pace

‘THE MANDALORIAN’ Chapter 10: Filoni and Favreau Pull No Punches About Their Plodding Pace

Before I watched a minute of Chapter 10 of The Mandalorian, I had already read a couple of messages and seen enough Twitter comments to know presume that the episode was going to move a bit slowly. Then, less than 10 minutes into the episode, the characters themselves made it clear. To me the conversation between Peli Motto and Din Djarin about how to best transport those eggs was more than instructions on how to move those eggs; to me it was a message from the show’s creatives that this show is going to move slowly and that they believe that slow-moving pace is the best way to develop their baby. And those eggs…they’re not just eggs.

The Mandalorian' Season 2 Opener: A Favorite 'Star Wars' Character Makes A Cameo – Recap – Deadline

Traveling sub-light is a bit dicey these days…

As our own, talented Joao Pinto wrote here, The Mandalorian goes against the grain by refusing its viewers the instant gratification that we’ve become used to. Creators Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau have a story to tell in this world but they have repeatedly proven that they are in no hurry to tell it. Their deliberate and restrained pace has caused some frustrations for fans, but they don’t seem too rattled by it, as this episode seems to prove. Favreau is playing with ideas that are in the same sandbox that George Lucas built in 1976. We’ve spent a lot of time on Tatooine exploring and expanding that “rock” that Luke Skywalker himself couldn’t wait to escape and I think that’s telling. Favreau’s growth as a story teller over his career has been nothing short of remarkable and now he’s doing something that many mature story tellers have done over the years: finding value in things that others have overlooked.

As for Filoni, we already know he’s probably the world’s biggest Star Wars fan and that pretty much nobody alive loves their job as much as he does but there’s more to the story there, too. Filoni has LIVED Star Wars not just as a fan but as one of its most prolific creators. Dating back to his work on Clone Wars, Filoni has spent thousands of hours developing and curating the universe that Lucas built and, in that time, has developed a love affair with the most minute of details. The pair of them working together on this show was never going to go any other way.

Their partnership dates back to The Clone Wars where Favreau voiced Pre Vizsla and first wielded the Darksaber, an artifact we saw reemerge in Season 1 of The Mandalorian, and as someone who is currently watching The Clone Wars as a companion to The Mandalorian, it seems evident to me that Filoni and Favreau are still exploring themes and ideas they first tinkered with over a decade ago. If you think they’re going slow now, stop and think about that: in some cases they’re still telling a story that began in 2008 and they are in no rush to get to the last chapter.

Moving fast is the only thing keeping me safe…

Once the realization above sinks in, it’s much easier to sit back and enjoy The Mandalorian for what it is: the live-action Star Wars version of Kung Fu with Din Djarin out fighting for justice, protecting the underdog but, most of all, walking the Earth (ok, the galaxy) all while avoiding all those other bounty hunters out to get him. While Kung Fu was a martial arts Western, The Mandalorian is a sci-fi Western. Westerns are a lot of things: they’re nostalgic, exist on the border of civilization and wilderness and, most of all, typically move at an almost glacial pace. For this reason, their popularity has waned over the last 30-40 years despite a handful of very well-made Western films. Filoni and Favreau know this. They know that modern fans have the “I wanna go fast” mindset of Ricky Bobby, but if you paid attention to this episode, they told us all loud and clear that they’re going to continue telling this story their way and continue the homage to Akira Kurosawa that Lucas began in 1976. They believe in the long game, a game they’ve not only been setting up episode by episode but before that and they are going to continue narrating this tale in that way because just like those frog eggs, story telling like this is becoming more rare by the minute but, by taking proper care of the story, by avoiding the urge to jump into hyperspace, they believe they’ll save what’s almost a lost art of storytelling.

  • First Look at ‘Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ Prowler in Action in Launch Trailer

First Look at ‘Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ Prowler in Action in Launch Trailer

Can you believe that Insomniac’s Spider-Man sequel is only a few days away from releasing? Their latest entry into the franchise will kick-off the next generation of gaming, as it releases on PlayStation 5 during its launch. Now, to celebrate its upcoming release, Insomniac has released a brand new launch trailer that offers a much closer look at the story to come. We get a small glimpse of Prowler in action. Peter Parker leaves the city in MIles’ hands as he starts to grow into his own as the titular character. We also get another tease of the ongoing conflict between the Tinkerer and Roxxon. We even get a tease of Rhino’s new look for the game, which has a rather familiar red to it.

The game looks better with each new trailer. Insomniac certainly is kickstarting the next generation of gaming, as the animations and models are looking better than ever. I love that they ended the trailer with the Spider-Cat takedown, which might be something I will spam more often than I am willing to confess. If you don’t have a PlayStation 5 pre-ordered, do not worry, the game will also be available on PlayStation 4. Plus, you’ll get a free upgrade once you can purchase the next Sony console. It’ll be interesting to see the difference between both, especially as we are entering a new era with ray-tracing and a stronger SSD. I am excited to see if the DualSense lets you feel the web in your hand as Miles’ swings through New York City. We are about to enter a brand new chapter in gaming and the world of Insomniac’s Spider-Man. I cannot wait to see what the next generation has in store for us.

  • MORTAL KOMBAT 11 is About Reinvent Itself in a Huge Way

MORTAL KOMBAT 11 is About Reinvent Itself in a Huge Way

Mortal Kombat is reinventing itself once more. In last week’s Kombat Kast presentation for their upcoming Kombat Pack 3 DLC, Netherrealm Studios confirmed that a bombshell of an update was coming to the Mortal Kombat 11 in a couple of days: Ranked Kustom Kombat. For the uninitiated, you might think this is just another idea that sounds as nonsensical as it is spelled. For the fans, it means an entirely new game unto itself.

The tenth game in the series, aptly titled Mortal Kombat X, introduced the idea of unique character variations: predetermined movesets that allowed a specific character to function uniquely. Mortal Kombat’s variation system can be traced back to the franchise’s sixth-generation console games like Deadly Alliance and Deception but didn’t fully materialize until the tenth game. The idea behind the variation system is this: each character had 3 variations meaning you could play Sub-Zero in three different ways. These variations had its own set of special moves that you won’t get access to in another. One variation might require more strategy and defensive playing while one could be more offense-centric with not much leeway. These combinations were determined by the developers as to not make characters too overpowered.

It was so well-received that it would’ve been a crime for Netherrealm Studios not to include it in Mortal Kombat 11. The eleventh game in the franchise introduced the next logical step in the progression system but with a catch: you can make your own variation with all kinds of crazy moves but you can only play it in low-stakes-whatever Kasual mode but not in the game’s official Ranked mode.

This catch drew mixed reactions for a few reasons. For one, Mortal Kombat 11 was in many ways, the antithesis to its two predecessors. The ninth and tenth installments were absolutely rush down, unforgiving, fast-paced fighting games; a well-executed combo would leave you helplessly watching half your lifebar drain in a span of seconds. Moves were over-the-top and characters were practically broken. Mortal Kombat 11 made it a point to change all of that and made a slowed-down, more accessible fighting game for players of all levels. That meant cutting down on some of the craziness and brokenness which is an understandable fix given the studio’s desire for more player inclusion but in the face of the game’s two predecessors, some saw this change as a step-down. You’d often read on message boards, “Mortal Kombat 11 is okay to play but really boring to watch.”

Another reason why the restrictive kustom variations in Mortal Kombat 11 drew mixed reactions was because it handicapped certain characters that did not have the most viable variations. Balance issues aren’t a novel thing in the fighting game industry but the variation system shed light on some of these imbalances in an unflattering way. Some variations were laughably unusable in an online setting while some were just too good not to use, so much so that you’d end up fighting the same characters with the same variations fifty times a day. Top 8 tournament characters would always end up playing the same: Liu Kang’s Luohan Quan, Jacqui Briggs’ Upgraded, Johnny Cage Outtake. The restrictive variation system, ironically, took out the variety in the game.

With a neverending list of variation imbalances and a noob-friendly and, dare I say, scrub-friendly gameplay system, things were starting to slow down for the game in recent months. Fans started to get frustrated about the lack of updates from the developers which led to the trending of #DearNRS on Twitter. While fighting games like Tekken and Street Fighter had clear and concise roadmaps on what was next, Mortal Kombat fans were left to scour the internet for rumors and datamined leaks. The pandemic certainly didn’t help as offline tournaments promoting the game were thrown out the window. The last few months even saw a handful of popular players of Netherrealm Studios games share on Twitter their dissatisfaction with the then-current state of Mortal Kombat 11.

Now, it seems like the collective pent-up frustrations have gone away with the additions of fan-favorites Rain and Mileena and more importantly, the announcement of Ranked Kustom Kombat. Described as the Wild Wild West, the customs change will allow fans to build their own version of Scorpion to play him however they want with whatever combination of moves they want and actually play it in an official high-stakes Ranked competitive match. The idea has apparently been on Netherrealm Studios’ horizon for quite some time as Mortal Kombat community figureheads Ketchup and Mustard revealed on one of their most recent streams that during Final Kombat 2020, they and a few professional competitors were asked by the game’s co-creator himself Ed Boon what they thought about Ranked Kustom Kombat.

Of course, people already have all sorts of things to say about it. In the days since the announcement, fans have already been rabidly debating the pros and cons of such a change. Some are worried, some don’t quite know what to expect and some are already preparing to leave the game. But if there was one constant thing I’ve noticed, it’s that there’s an excitement in the air for the game that hasn’t been seen since its release. Mortal Kombat pundits have already taken to Youtube to give their followers a primer of what to expect. I’ve seen lengthy Twitter threads of fans sharing their desired custom variations and analyzing them. Heck, just today I spent more than 2 hours trying to figure out how to optimize my Raiden and Shang Tsung while catering to my specific playstyle.

With this change inevitably comes all kinds of brokenness to an already imbalanced game but Netherrealm Studios already seems prepared to deal with it. In the aforementioned Kombat Kast,  Senior Quality Analyst Stephanie Brownback alluded that some moves deemed too crazy even for the Wild Wild West that is Kustom Kombat were getting prohibited. Add to that their plans to fix some of the balance issues and their plans to scale down some of the defensive mechanics such as the delayed wake-up options, it sounds like the new meta of the game will have the best of both worlds: some over-the-top craziness with some safety mechanics to anchor it. I gotta admit, dialing the brokenness to 11 wasn’t the fix I imagined when thinking about how to balance the game, but hey, it’s hard to deny how bold and exciting the prospect is. What do you do when a handful of characters are too powerful? In Mortal Kombat 11’s case, you make everyone else powerful as fuck.

Mortal Kombat 11 has always been a blast to play. I’ve been playing it every single day since the new year started and I’ve clocked it about 300 hours so far, the most time I’ve spent ever playing any video game. I missed out on playing the two games before it so the Wild Wild West is something I have yet to experience. There’s an anxiousness I’m feeling. A worry that the game might leave me behind as I’ve become too accustomed to the status quo of a slowed down, noob-friendly game. But there’s also the anticipation of playing a completely new game once the update arrives. This update is such a brilliant move on Netherrealm Studios’ part as it will finally allow players to explore each character’s depth to their full potential and overall just make the game more exciting. It’s the perfect transitional move to breathe new life into the game as we enter the next-generation of console gaming.
