  • Early Projections Predict ‘Wakanda Forever’ to Outgross ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Domestically

Early Projections Predict ‘Wakanda Forever’ to Outgross ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Domestically

There’s still some time until Black Panther: Wakanda Forever releases in theaters later in November. Yet, that isn’t stopping form early projections from hitting the web. The sequel has some heavy weight upon its back, as it not only has to compensate for the loss of its main star Chadwick Boseman but also faced quite a few production troubles along the way. After a powerful first trailer though, it definitely seemed safe to say that Wakanda Forever will still leave its mark in theaters while paying tribute to the actor that made T’Challa a household name.

According to Variety’s early projections based on Cinelytics, the film is likely to make around $423M domestically. Many will look at these numbers and point out that it’s a far cry from the first entry’s massive $700M domestic release. It’s still very early to say how it will truly perform as the marketing has yet to kick into high gear but there is some concern about the passing of Boseman negatively affecting the film’s main draw. Plus, the first entry was quite the cultural release that went way past expectations.

While many like to callback to Tom Cruise‘s star power for the box office success of Top Gun: Maverick, it’s just as much lightning in the bottle scenario that it had the staying power it did. It became Cruise’s highest-grossing film ever by a wide margin. Sometimes elements just come together at the right time to give films a massive boost, which we saw in the past with Avatar, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and The Force Awakens. The question is rather if people’s curiosity about the sequel and how it pays tribute to the actor.

It could just as well end up surprising many. Plus, Marvel Studios’ main goal is for it to cover the production costs and pull in a profit. If it manages to accomplish that, it’s still a success in their eyes even if it wouldn’t really break any massive records or come near the first release. For now, it still looks like it could likely become 2022’s highest-grossing Marvel Studios release and that might be enough to push the project forward. Who knows if we have another No Way Home scenario on our hands and we won’t know until November.

  • Robert Egger’s ‘Nosferatu’ Picks Up Steam as it Finds New Cast

Robert Egger’s ‘Nosferatu’ Picks Up Steam as it Finds New Cast

There were a lot of theories hitting the web when Robert EggersNorthman didn’t quite become the massive box office success that many expected it to be. It still went on to make its money back through its physical and digital releases, which also seemingly boosted the chances of the director to realize his passion project, a new take on the iconic 1922 film Nosferatu. Deadline has revealed that not only is it gaining momentum, it even found a brand new cast to take on the leading roles.

It seems that Bill Skarsgard and Lily-Rose Depp are now set to star in the film for Focus Features. They are replacing original stars Harry Styles and Anya Taylor-Joy when it was set to film in 2019 for Studio 8. The project was originally going to be tackled before he took his turn at telling a Viking-based story but due to budget calculations, it was put on hold. It seems he wasn’t always going to return to the project as he looked at others but still wanted to explore the gothic tale.

It seems that Focus joining was the reason he settled on bringing his passion project to life. It seems he started meeting with talent right after and Skarsgard would take on the role of the 19th-century monster even when his previous cast was already attached. It seems he swiftly ensured he’d get time to join the project but Taylor-Joy was too busy to find time in her schedule, which led to Depp getting the role.

  • 1 of These 3 Children of Logan Should Become the MCU’s Wolverin

1 of These 3 Children of Logan Should Become the MCU’s Wolverin

Wolverine is one of the most popular comic characters of all time. Given the character’s long life, it is no surprise that there are more than a few successors to the Wolverine mantle kicking around in Marvel Comics. And with the recent announcement that Hugh Jackman will be returning to the role once again in Deadpool 3, now is as good a time as any to look at the most prominent of Wolverine’s “children” that could be adapted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Right off the bat, there are quite a few “mini-Logans” running around in the comics. So many that one was able to round up an entire team of Wolverine offspring called “The Mongrels.” The MCU shouldn’t bother with every single clone, but they should focus on a few. However, 3 of Wolverine’s kids from the comics are primed to make an appearance in the MCU. Starting with…

    Laura Kinney, aka X-23/Wolverine

Laura is a weapon, but she does not have to be. She’s basically a second shot at Wolverine. On the comics side, a group known as “The Facility” wanted to recreate Weapon X by cloning Logan. In the real world, Laura was a shot at giving audiences a younger Wolverine who could be hip and cool with the kids. In her short time as a comic character, Laura Kinney has gone by many names. She has been known as Wolverine, X-23, and even Talon for a while. She actually debuted on X-Men: Evolution (the best show) as a young clone of Wolverine seeking out her progenitor. Laura is the mutant “Pinocchio.” She was created for a single purpose: to be the assassin for The Facility, the ultimate killing machine. But like Pinocchio, she wants to be a real person. So, she cut her strings and found her humanity.

Laura is sad – her short life has been filled with trauma. The Facility broke her spirit and tortured her, all so Laura could be the perfect killer without any physical attachments. So, when she escaped, Laura realized that her childhood was taken from her. In spite of this, Laura is surprisingly well-adjusted; more so than Logan was at her age. Part of this has to do with her loving mother that sort of raised her, but it’s probably largely attributed to her relationship with Logan and the rest of the X-Men. Laura does not have these centuries of trauma that come with Logan, so she’s able to change and grow.

Laura played a part in the X-Force, Avengers Arena, and currently is representing all of Krakoa as a member of the X-Men. And when Logan was killed, Laura took up the mantle as the All-New Wolverine. Laura is also not necessarily one-of-a-kind. She’s the 23rd clone of Wolverine, but there are a few others that popped up out of the woodwork. Four found Laura during the all-new Wolverine storyline. Three were perfect copies, and one was a younger version known as Gabby. But Laura helps the clones like family and is able to be an older sister to Gabby once all the clone business is finished.

But Laura is not without her issues. A big one comes from something known as the “trigger scent.” Obviously, Laura can be violent under the right circumstances. She is, after all, a clone of Logan. But Laura’s creators gave her a physiological reaction to a specific scent. She’s programmed to destroy anything bearing that scent. This was originally perceived as a way to make her more emotionless and more of an assassin, but it has been used by her more sadistic enemies to just mess with Laura; dumping the smell on an entire town or even a friend. It’s a doomsday scenario for Laura. She even killed her mother after her mother was tagged with the scent. This causes Laura extreme emotional pain, although she has gotten over the scent recently. Just like Pinocchio, she’s got no strings on her.

Previously, Dafne Keen played Laura in Logan, and there is so much to like. Most notably, she was angry and psychotic, ripping the Reavers to shreds; that’s very Laura. The biggest liberty they took with Laura was her age as she’s traditionally a bit older. It’s unclear canonically how old, but she’s at least maybe in her late teens. So, Laura played by an actor who was around 10 when they filmed was a bit of a stretch. Her age puts her a little closer to Laura’s sister Gabby. But the spirit and character of Laura were there. She was angry, sad, and wanted a family. There’s a strong case to be made for bringing back Dafne Keen. Audiences loved Keen in Logan. She’s a young star on the rise, is used to physical roles like in Logan (which is incredibly important), and has a real edge. She is able to get angry in that classically Wolverine way. And it would be a fun way to acknowledge that Hugh Jackman did pass the torch to Keen in the movie.

    Akihiro, aka Daken

Akihiro is a bad boy. Daken is like Wolverine, but angsty, vengeful, and sexy. Now, there are 2 Akihiro’s that exist in the comics, or more appropriately there’s Daken and Akihiro. Daken is the edgy and evil son-villain, while Akihiro is the superhero. When the character was originally introduced, he was called Daken; it’s a slur in Japanese that translates to “mongrel.” He went by that for a very long time. Only recently has Akihiro caught on as the generally accepted name for the character.

Akihiro is Logan’s son, born from a relationship with a woman named Itsu. Unlike Laura or Gabby, he is not a clone. Itsu was killed and it was assumed that her child also died since it was never born. But the child’s incredible healing factor let it survive outside the womb. The child was taken by Romulus, that archenemy that’s been pulling all of the strings in Wolverine’s life; the architect of all his pain. Unfortunately, for one to understand the character of Akihiro, Romulus, a villain that should not be acknowledged further, must be touched upon. Romulus dropped the baby off with a Japanese family, and that was that. Until his adopted family imploded when Akihiro found out his mom did not love him, and killed their newborn baby and his adopted mother before his adopted father committed suicide. This is what the Akihiro comics were like in the 2000s (SO edgy).

Then Romulus came back. Romulus is some ageless wolf-man who has existed since the dawn of humanity. He is the same Romulus who founded Rome, and he is particularly obsessed with Logan because of the whole wolf thing. Romulus raised Akihiro with the hopes that Akihiro would defeat his father Logan and take Romulus’ place at the top of the food chain (it’s very dumb). But from that point on, Akihiro was the dark Wolverine trained by Romulus and manipulated to believe Wolverine killed his birth mother when it was actually (fun fact) Bucky, the Winter Soldier. But, Akihiro spent the next 50 years training and preparing to meet his father and avenge his mother.

This version of Akihiro is very much a 2000s, edgy, emo version of Wolverine with a mohawk and tattoos, who does bad stuff because he loves to be bad. It really doesn’t work, probably due to the fact that he is very predictable and silly in that way. The more interesting secret Logan-child running around is Laura, and when her story is put next to Akihiro’s, it just makes his look dumb. He’s just doing what she did, but edgier, and constantly being manipulated by villains like Romulus, Mystique, Ms. Sinister, Norman Osborn, and even just some actor named Marcus Ralston. He’s sort of a dummy. Yes, he’s a very clever tactician with lots of plans and schemes, but it takes a while for Akihiro to really feel like his own character, with agency and personality outside of all the Romulus revenge stuff.

Over time, Akihiro worked with Logan and Laura, but it was not until the recent comics on Krakoa that Akihiro became someone unique. He is still Wolverine’s son and still in his shadow, and is still kind of a jerk, but he’s very serious now. He seems to have gotten over himself. A lot of that probably comes from making peace with his father, as well as Krakoa’s calming effect that makes all the villains a little less “villain-y.” However, the biggest difference is that the new Akihiro is like Wolverine, but sexy. Yes, Wolverine is plenty sexy. But, Wolverine is sexier than your average man. Akihiro is sexier than your average superhero. He is superhumanly sexy. Part of Akihiro’s mutant ability allows him to emit pheromones that can control the emotions of others, usually making them feel the way Akihiro does. Akihiro is also bisexual. Originally this was part of his schemes. He used sex as a way to get what he wanted and didn’t see partners as anything but a means to an end (boring). But since then, Akihiro has matured. In X-Factor, he has a flirty relationship with Aurora, and in Marvel’s Voices: Pride, Akihiro also has a fake lifelong relationship with Somnus, the new mutant who can control dreams. So, while Akihiro can be vengeful, that’s not enough in MCU. He also needs a personality. A great avenue for Akihiro could be that he’s just a super sexy mutant; the X-Men Mr. Steal Your Girl.

    Gabrielle Kinney, aka Honey Badger/Scout

Gabrielle is a kid – the zoomer Wolverine. Gabby first showed up in All-New Wolverine back in 2016. In that storyline, Laura found out that even though she was the first successful clone of Logan, Laura was not the last. She tracks down a team of several clones, all of which looked exactly like her – except Gabby. Gabby is a younger clone and the younger sister of this group. Once all of the rest of the clone sisters are either liberated or killed, Gabby is the one that stays with Laura and becomes her adopted little sister. Gabby also has a pet – one of only a few X-pets besides Lockheed, Amazing Baby, and Jeff the Land Shark. In All-New X-Men #7, Squirrel Girl brings Laura a wolverine that Gabby adopts and names Jonathan. It’s adorable and it needs to be translated to live action.

Gabby is optimistic, idealistic, and silly. Her powers are similar to Laura’s, with one big difference: Gabby – and all of her sisters – cannot feel pain, which, when coupled with a healing factor, is a huge plus. So, while she has lived a very tough life, Gabby is able to roll with the craziness of the X-Men life pretty well. She’s also sometimes known as “Honey Badger” or “Scout”, and that’s cool. New characters should be given new names. Or if legacy characters are given the original name, that name should not be given back to the original character. If Laura is Wolverine (which is great), Logan should now be Logan, otherwise, it is not a mantle – and it’s a pretty useless call sign.

A case is made for each of three Wolverine children that would be best suited to show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Once Marvel Studios establishes their own Logan, perhaps we’ll see all of them.

  • Six Seasons…and a Movie! ‘Community’ Film Officially in Development at Peacock

Six Seasons…and a Movie! ‘Community’ Film Officially in Development at Peacock

After having long been prophesied, the concept of “six seasons and a movie” for Community will officially be completed. Aftering having aired over 100 episodes between 2009 and 2015, the Peacock streaming service has ordered a feature film to serve as a finale to the sitcom franchise. This comes after an extensive bidding war amongst various streamers to acquire the rights to said film. The full series library will also be moving to Peacock on a non-exclusive basis.

Dan Harmon will return to write the final film alongside Andrew Guest. Meanwhile, numerous stars of the original series are slated to return. This includes the likes of Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong. There is no official word on original starring cast members who left the series during its run such as Donald Glover, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Chevy Chase. Though it’s probable none of them will have a significant role in the film (especially Chase, due to his contentious exit from the series after the fourth season).

Community initially released in 2009 on NBC as a compatriot with shows such as The Office, Parks & Rec, and 30 Rock. Though after fledgling ratings, its sixth and final season aired on the now-defunct Yahoo! Screen service. While never receiving the television rating acclaim of the other three sitcom stalwarts, the genre-bending comedy has maintained a strong niche fanbase. The news of the closing film is certainly bound to draw mass excitement from audiences and be a major driving force for the young Peacock streaming service.

  • ‘Hocus Pocus 2’: Bette Midler Discusses the Long-Gestating Sequel

‘Hocus Pocus 2’: Bette Midler Discusses the Long-Gestating Sequel

Rumors of a sequel to the 1993 cult classic Halloween film Hocus Pocus swirled for the better part of a decade. Over those years, star Bette Midler was often right in the mix with fans in pushing for the sequel and at one point made it clear she wouldn’t be interested in anything less than a true follow-up, refusing to take part in a remake of the original in 2017. Finally, in October of 2019, Hocus Pocus 2 got the green light at Disney, and a year later Midler, along with co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, were on board to reprise their roles as the Sanderson sisters.

According to Midler, however, despite how well-loved the original film is and all the rumors, speculation and fan support for a sequel, she wasn’t so sure that Hocus Pocus 2 would ever really happen. During the global press conference held following the film’s premiere, Midler admitted she didn’t truly believe the day would come when the sequel would come together.

I didn’t until the day finally came. And then I realized, oh, we’re really gonna do this. This was kind of a dream come true, it really was. I mean, I’ve been, I don’t want to say, agitating but kind of like after I realized it was actually a phenomenon, I started asking people around my age and people like that, don’t you think they would be interested in a sequel? This was a long time ago. This was like 15 years ago, something like that. So here we are.

    Bette Midler

Midler’s passion for the project certainly kept a potential sequel from dying in development hell. And given the film’s ending and post-credit scene, it’s possible that Hocus Pocus 2 won’t be the last film in what could well become a Disney Halloween franchise.

Hocus Pocus 2 is now streaming on Disney Plus.

  • REPORT: ‘X-Men ’97’ Head Writer to Rewrite ‘Blade’ from Scratch

REPORT: ‘X-Men ’97’ Head Writer to Rewrite ‘Blade’ from Scratch

Just yesterday, Illuminerdi was sharing some insight into what may be initial plot details on what the future has in store for Mahershala Ali‘s take on Blade. It hinted that we’d explore the 1920s with Eric Brooks potentially taking on European vampires. Yet, it seems that current developments may push the project into completely new directions, especially after losing director Bassam Tariq. As we shared earlier this week, there were enough hints that Moon Knight writer and X-Men ’97 head writer Beau DeMayo may be attached to give the project a few rewrites. Now it seems like he’s heavier involved than expected.

While Stacy Osei-Kuffour was attached to write the initial script, DeMayo has potentially now joined the production to rewrite the script from scratch. While covering the news on the first story hints, The Direct reveals that according to their sources he is currently set to overhaul the entire movie from scratch. As such, we might expect them to invest quite a bit more time before they’ll enter production if he truly is that heavily involved moving forward.

It seems that his work on Moon Knight and the upcoming X-Men revival series impressed Marvel Studios quite a bit, inspiring their move to have him lead the project. It’s not uncommon that this happens with these types of projects, as Deadpool 3 famously also saw Bob’s BurgersWendy and Lizzie Molyneux get replaced by the franchise’s original writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick after some initial scripts were already pitched. The only question remains who exactly may take over as director for this project and how he may also lend his voice to the project moving forward.

  • Universal Developing a New ‘American Pie’ Movie

Universal Developing a New ‘American Pie’ Movie

Universal is looking to bring back American Pie. The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Definition Please filmmaker Sujata Day has signed on to helm a new American Pie movie. Day will write and direct the film which is said to be a fresh take based on her original pitch to the studio.

Day is perhaps best known for her role as Sarah on HBO’s Insecure. However, she recently begun to turn her talents to behind the camera. Her directorial debut, Definition Please, in which she also starred, won the grand jury award for best narrative feature at San Francisco CAAM Fest. The film was acquired by Ava DuVernay’s Array banner and is now available to stream on Netflix. Prior to Definition Please, Day directed the YouTube Series, This Is My Story, featuring LeVar Burton.

American Pie was released in 1999 and quickly proved to be a success, amassing $225 million worldwide on an $11 million budget. It spawned two sequels, as well as a direct to video franchise titled American Pie Presents, currently consisting of five titles. As of now, the latest American Pie film has no release date, nor has any of the cast been announced.

  • Marvel Studios Developing ‘Armor Wars’ as a Movie Instead of Disney+ Series

Marvel Studios Developing ‘Armor Wars’ as a Movie Instead of Disney+ Series

Ever since it was officially announced, fans have eagerly been awaiting news regarding Marvel Studios’ Armor Wars. The project was to be made into a Disney+ series, however, outside of Yassir Lester being announced as the head writer, very little news seemed to surface regarding the project. Lester and leading man, Don Cheadle, assured fans it was coming, though, and now it appears we might have a reason as to why the project is moving so slowly.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Marvel Studios is developing Armor Wars as a feature film instead of a Disney+ series. Both Lester and Cheadle remain on board the project. The project is being redeveloped into a feature film, which is more than likely why Armor Wars still lacked a release window during Marvel Studios’ D23 presentation. The decision was made as Marvel felt the best way to tell the story was through a feature film rather than a television series. Production on the six-episode series was expected to begin in early 2023, however, crew members were said to be notified today that is no longer happening.

The title of the series was inspirited by a storyline in the Iron Man comics from 1987 and 1988 by writers David Michelinie and Bob Layton and artist Mark Bright. It focused on the highly advanced technology of Iron Man falling into the wrong hands.

As of now, Armor Wars does not have a release date or director attached to the project.

  • Michael Giacchino Discusses Usage of Vintage Film Techniques in ‘Werewolf by Night’

Michael Giacchino Discusses Usage of Vintage Film Techniques in ‘Werewolf by Night’

With Werewolf by Night nearing a week from its official release on Disney+, anticipation for Marvel Studios’ first Special Presentation has certainly been on the rise. Ever since the official announcement of the project paired with the first trailer, many fans were pleasantly taken aback by how much this creative team went all in on the 1930s horror genre pastiche.

This was followed by the social media embargo lifting and critics giving overall positive responses to the 50-minute short film for its ability to honor classic filmmaking in the streaming landscape. A large heap of that praise should then land at the feet of director Michael Giacchino for creating this vintage aesthetic.

While sitting down with Collider for an interview, Giacchino discussed how some of these implementations came into place. Namely, the usage of cigarette burn cue marks throughout the special.

As we were editing and stuff, my editor Jeff and I are such nerds for this kind of thing, and we were just like, ‘Oh, we got to put in those things too. We got to put in the reel changes.’ Because we always approached this as something that was being done in the 30s. What would they have done and what would they have had at their disposal? How would they have done it? So, we did as many practical effects as we could.

    Michael Giacchino

While being such a distinct element that could very well go unnoticed to most casual viewers, it’s emblematic of Giacchino’s care for matching the form of classic horror movies in the golden age of film. As well, the reliance on practical effects will likely stand out distinctly in relation to the heavy reliance on digital effects in film (especially in the superhero genre). The director went on to elaborate on his desire to have fully built sets for the actors to interact with in Werewolf by Night.

I wanted the actors to feel like they were in a true environment as opposed to having not only the work of creating these characters for us to experience on film, but then they would have to also imagine what was around them.

    Michael Giacchino

Ultimately, these types of quotes from Michael Giacchino continue to build high amounts of promise for Marvel Studios’ upcoming project. If nothing else, Werewolf by Night is shaping to be one of the most visually unique projects to release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Werewolf by Night stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Laura Donnelly and is set to release on Friday, October 7 on Disney+.

  • ‘Now You See Me 3’ Adds ‘Uncharted Director’

‘Now You See Me 3’ Adds ‘Uncharted Director’

It looks like Ruben Fleischer has found his next franchise, as he’s now set to direct the third installment of the Now You See Me franchise. He famously worked on the recent adaptations of Venom (though did not return for the sequel) and Sony’s latest PlayStation adaptation, Uncharted. The screenplay is written by Seth Grahame Smith, who famously worked on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which is overseen by Fleischer. It’s an updated draft of the one written by American Hustle‘s Eric Warren Singer.

Director Fleischer got a chance to share his excitement about the project and also confirmed that at least Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg are set tor return in the sequel.

There are three things in this world I absolutely love… Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and magic. To have the chance to work with these two talented actors, as well as rest of the incredible cast of the Now You See Me movies is a dream come true. I am a lifelong fan of heist movies – I love getting drawn in by the twists and the mystery where nothing is what it seems. And that’s even more true when the thieves are magicians – the opportunities are endless.  Eric was able to unlock a fresh and exciting way into a new movie and fun new characters, so I’m excited to dig in even further.

    Ruben Fleischer

Now You See Me was a special kind of blockbuster film that used its magic tricks to pull a final surprise by the end. The first one was quite well-received but it is surprising that they are moving forward with a sequel since the last entry was all the way back in 2016. We’ll see how they’ll approach the latest entry and make it stand out even after such a long break.
