    ‘Werewolf by Night’ Director on Getting Away With More Blood in Black-and-White

    When we got our first look at Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night, you could tell it was going to be something special. Not only did it offer something familiar to classic Hammer and Universal monster movies, under the guise of a “Special Presentation,” but it even teased quite a bit of gory action filtered through a classic black-and-white design.

    In an interview with Collider, director and long-time Marvel composer Michael Giacchino got the chance to tease what he’s been working on and the love of a genre that inspired it. That’s not all, as he also got a chance to talk about the way they were able to push the boundaries with its blood and gore, even if he seemingly isn’t that big of a fan of slasher flicks.

    I think that helped us. It certainly didn’t hurt us. I think that doing something like this, we were able to push a little further into that direction than we might have if he had done it any other way. I think people will still be surprised when they see it. The people who are just turning it on and seeing, but hey, that’s part of the fun of it. I felt like as long as it didn’t become sadistic … that was our thing. Because I’m very squeamish generally. I don’t like slasher movies for that reason. So, I didn’t want it to ever get into that realm where it’s just indiscriminate killing. Everything needed to have a reason and a why and a how and all of that. So, I do think that being in black and white helped us with a lot of that, keeping it in that realm.

    It’s definitely going to be interesting to see just how far they managed to push the project, as we only have a bit longer until it releases on Disney+. Marvel Studios has been all-in with this project showcasing it at Fantastic Fest and even Beyond Fest, highlighting it as their big push for a genre project. We’ll see if Werewolf by Night can really pull it together.

    RUMOR: Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade’ May Take Place in the 1920s

    While Marvel Studios’ upcoming adaptation of Blade has been potentially delayed indefinitely due to losing director Bassam Tariq, it seems that Illuminerdi has released some details in regards to what were the original intentions with this project. With Mahershala Ali set to take on the titular role of Eric Books, who most know as the vampire hunter Blade.

    According to Illuminerdi, the upcoming Marvel film may not be set in the current timeline but rather explore the 1920s. It may feature Blade taking on European vampires before it starts exploring multiple time periods until it arrives in the modern MCU. It would make sense as it could further explore how vampires remained hidden for so long while also telling a story that isn’t forced to go by how the modern MCU works.

    There are mentions of issues with the script in the current rumor mill, which means they might end up changing things up. The only aspect that could happen is that this concept doesn’t even make it into the final script once they start filming. Still, it taking place in the 1920s would add a unique visual flair to the story and give them the opportunity to offer something more gothic in design.

    Plus, it would make Blade stand out more from other members of the MCU. It would be a shame not to explore the history of vampires while also hinting at how they managed to remain such a mystery even into the modern age. Perhaps Werewolf by Night might offer a little glimpse into how the supernatural horror part of the franchise works early next month.

    REVIEW: ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ is Trigger at its Best

    Trigger is a household name in the anime industry, and they’ve also built up quite the reputation for the kinds of projects they put out. So, many were naturally quite excited when it was announced that they are actively working on an animate adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077, which was for quite some time considered the most anticipated game release of all time. Sadly, it didn’t quite manage to stay true t that promise. A lot has happened since, but the anime under the title Cyberpunk Edgerunner revived the Cyberpunk hype. And that’s for a good reason.

    From the moment Franz Ferdinand‘s “This Fffire” plays, you know you’re in for a dark tale. The opening doesn’t hide what’s about to come and sets you off perfectly for what’s about to unfold. Yet, there’s this glimmer of hope and optimism this series continues to hold throughout its run. In a way, it encompasses the game’s core philosophy better than even its original medium. Trigger’s greatest strengths are at play here bringing us their likely most “grounded” story yet.

    We explore the story of David Martinez and the tragedy that unfolds his life as he finds himself in the underbelly of Night City. Even if the game wasn’t well-received, there’s definitely something beautiful and fascinating about the world they’ve created. Once you’re trapped in the nightscape of Cyberpunk, you can’t help but want to see more stories explored in this world.

    It’s also very bloody and shows no restraints; just adds a little splendor to the already extremely well-animated sequences. The use of CG is also quite well-done as outside of some vehicles here or there, it was extremely well implemented into the more traditional animation. Though the highlight is the character details, something that they certainly made use of in a world filled with cybernetic enhancements.

    Speaking of, they make good use of the world to tell their story and characters. We get some of the best insights into characters’ minds through the concept of cyberpsychosis. Episode 6 is a standout and heartbreaking in many ways that just adds so much to the concept of how this is familiar but also different. At the core of this story, it’s about these characters and their lives. And it does it wonderfully with the only complaint being that we don’t get more than 10 episodes.

    There are some standout characters and the show knows you’ll get attached to them. Emi Lo‘s subdued Lucy offers something alluring and dangerous at the same time. You don’t blame Zach Aguilar‘s David for falling for her and taking a leap into a new world. Probably the biggest standout was Alex Cazares as the trigger-happy but delightful Rebecca, who commands the scene every time she’s around. You’ll get attached to this crew quite quickly.

    There is a bit of a jump after a specific episode that feels like it could’ve used more time. While it made sense given how they were approaching the story, its 10-episode story structure felt a bit restrictive in how much time we could spend and how fast some aspects seem to pass by. You want to spend time with these characters and when the show starts taking jumps it sometimes can be distracting especially if characters go through some major overhauls in-between episodes. This isn’t House of the Dragon level of time skips but for one case it felt a bit surprising.

    While Cyberpunk Edgerunners tells its own self-contained story throughout this season, it would be a shame not to tell others. There’s something gripping about this world and Trigger seemed surprisingly at home here. We get a glimpse of this world and it feels like there’s just too much to explore. Yet, at the same time, this series feels perfect as a one-time release, and wouldn’t really say I#d be mad if that was the only one we get. It had me laughing, and crying throughout; what more can you ask for?

    Jonathan Majors in Talks to Play Dennis Rodman in Lionsgate’s Upcoming NBA Film

    Lionsgate is setting its eyes on telling the story of Dennis Rodman’s 48 hours in Vegas during the 1998 NBA Finals. They were actively looking for someone to take on the role and they finally have found their star. It seems Jonathan Majors, the upcoming star of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, is currently in negotiations for the project.

    It was last August that Lionsgate won the debate for the spec with Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood set as producers for the project. Rodman is also set as an executive producer alongside Ari Lubet and Will Alegra. Jordan VanDina has written the screenplay for the upcoming adaptation but there’s seemingly no director attached yet.

    It seems that the story has received momentum after Michael Jordan‘s documentary The Last Dance, as Rodman supposedly went on a “madcap adventure” during the 1998 NBA Finals, which the film will explore as well as the budding friendship with his GM assistant. VanDina wrote the script during the pandemic and it seems Lionsgate was a fan from the first time they read it.

    Google Shutting Down Stadia in January 2023

    It looks like Google has decided that their cloud gaming service has no more future, as the service is set to shut down on January 18th, 2023. Not all is doom and gloom, as it seems they have decided to refund owners of Google Stadia for all games and add-on content that was purchased through its store, which will be completed by mid-January.

    Stadia Vice President Phil Harrison released the following statement on the official blog announcing the service’s being shut down:

    A few years ago, we also launched a consumer gaming service, Stadia. And while Stadia’s approach to streaming games for consumers was built on a strong technology foundation, it hasn’t gained the traction with users that we expected so we’ve made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service.

    It’s definitely curious how much was invested into this project. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has hinted that the investment is quite substantial, especially for massive IPs like Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin’s Creed, and many more. While they are taking the positive spin highlighting they can re-use the technology in other markets, it definitely is a heavy hit for the company.

    It’s not too surprising, as many expected the fact that Stadia is likely going to end sooner rather than later. Not a lot of games support Stadia and its player base has seemingly never truly grown beyond its baseline from the launch. There’s a lot we don’t know about how they handled this project, as they may have just hoped it could pick up again or mapped out a way to sundown the project some time ago. At least players are given a refund for their investment.

    Freya Allan Joins ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Ahead of October Production Start

    The Witcher star Freya Allan has joined Owen Teague and Peter Macon in 20th Century Studios next installment in their Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Directed by Wes Ball, the new film is said to pick up “many years” after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes. Allan has apparently landed the role as the lead human in the new film.

    Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the fourth film in the Planet of the Apes Saga which launched in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, continued in 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and again in 2017 with the aforementioned War for the Planet of the Apes. In an official statement, 20th Century Studios President Steve Asbell described the Ball’s vision for the latest installment as “extraordinary.”

    ‘Planet of the Apes’ is one of the most iconic and storied science fiction franchises in film history, as well as being an indelible part of our studio’s legacy.     Production on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set to kick off in October based on a screenplay from the team of Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and Patrick Aison, who worked on the recent streaming hit Prey. Ball is expected to serve as the director for an entire trilogy of Apes films that are rumored to focus on Teague’s Cornelius, the youngest son of Caesar, the protagonist of the first trilogy of films in the modern saga.

    ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Not Expected Before 2024

    As Season 1 of HBO’s House of the Dragon continues to thrill fans of the Game of Thrones franchise, news comes that there’s going to be a bit of a wait before Season 2 will stream. According to hoy.es, the production on the second season isn’t slated to get underway until 2023.

    It’s believed that pre-production on the second season will begin in October, but the account has learned that the studio has carved out a block of time from March through June to film in Càceres, Spain, where they will film scenes for the series’ King’s Landing setting. While this shouldn’t be taken as an indication that no filming on the series will take place before March, it’s a pretty good sign that fans will be waiting until 2024 for Season 2.

    The first six episodes of Season 1 of House of the Dragon are now streaming on HBO Max.

    Amazon Prime to Stream All 25 Bond Films For a Limited Time

    Agent 007 is set to have an official home in the streaming age. It has officially been announced that that all 25 James Bond films will be available to view on Amazon Prime Video. This includes every film between the initial Dr. No, starring the late Sean Connery, to the most recent 2021 release, No Time to Die, which served as a conclusion to Daniel Craig’s run as the ever-popular character. They are planned to release on October 5, though Amazon has stated that the films will be available on the streamer “for a limited time.”

    In addition to all the films arriving on Prime Video, the new documentary The Sound of 007 is set to release on the platform on October 5th as well. The documentary is set to survey the history of the character on the silver screen for the 60 years he’s been present in the zeitgeist. Mat Whitecross served as director for the project. To coincide with these James Bond-related projects, The Sound of 007: Live from the Royal Albert Hall, an exclusive recording of the live charity concert, will debut on Prime Video.

    All of this news comes with recent revelations that the process of finding the next actor to portray James Bond is underway. Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have confirmed the plans to further evolve the famous character with the times and the potentially decade-long commitment that will be needed from the future face of the franchise. Ultimately, it will be interesting to follow how the world of James Bond continues into a new era of film history.

    THEORY: ‘Deadpool 3’ Will Adapt ‘Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe’

    Well, folks, it’s finally happening. Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds are officially teaming up as Wolverine and Deadpool for the latter’s long-awaited third solo film, which is now set to hit theaters on September 6th, 2024. The reunion will be the first time the duo comes together on the big screen since 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and while fans likely have their hopes up for a more comic-accurate pairing than that film offered, it’s still unknown exactly how the story will allow for a meet-up to happen as it is. Jackman famously retired from his signature role following the character’s death in 2017’s Logan, and while nothing is confirmed, it doesn’t seem very probable that he sticks around for the Marvel Cinematic Universe long-haul following Deadpool 3‘s release. So, how could the Deadpool threequel simultaneously bring back the Aussie actor’s Wolverine for “one last time” and set Reynolds up as a member of the MCU going forward? A surprising comic may hold the answer.

    In 2011, Marvel began publishing a new Deadpool limited series from writer Cullen Bunn and artist Kaare Andrews. Titled Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, the brief arc quickly became a popular run with fans of the character. The plot was pretty simple and spelled out pretty efficiently in the title itself. Set in an alternate timeline to the mainstream Earth-616, the story begins with Wade Wilson being sent to a mental institution, against his will, by a concerned group of X-Men. Little do the mutants know, however, that the doctor at the hospital is actually Psycho-Man – a tiny mad scientist who originates from the Microverse – piloting a human-sized robot body. His plan is to brainwash as many villains as possible and create his own superhuman army, but when he tries to indoctrinate Deadpool, his devices have an unexpected effect. Wilson’s brain is already so discombobulated with voices and varying personalities, that Psycho-Man is unable to put him under his control. Instead, the voices in Deadpool’s head become increasingly violent, sending him on a murderous rampage through the entirety of the Marvel Universe.

    After squishing Psycho-Man, the out-of-control Merc With a Mouth sets out to systematically put an end to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. He kills the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, the Avengers, and even Howard the Duck. He steals Reed Richards’ gadgets to slay Uatu the Watcher, and uses Pym Particles to crush Thor with a giant version of his hammer Mjolnir. After a while, when all hope seems lost, the relatives of Marvel’s deceased heroes pool their money together to hire the only person they feel can actually put a stop to Deadpool’s killing spree: Taskmaster. Tasky then trails Wilson as he goes up against Charles Xavier and the X-Men. Of course, Deadpool succeeds in wiping the last superteam off the map, manipulating Xavier’s telepathy to help him in his goal and share what he knows to be true with the world. It turns out, Wilson is killing everyone because he knows they exist in a comic book, and suffer purely for entertainment. He only wants to stop the cycle.

    After finishing off what’s left of the Marvel Universe, ranging from galactic entities like Galactus to street-level heroes like Daredevil, his mission brings him face-to-face with Man-Thing and the Nexus of All-Realities. Before he can conclude his business, though, Taskmaster swoops in and the duo duke it out in one climactic last stand. After beating Taskmaster, with Man-Thing’s help, Deadpool uses the Nexus of All-Realities to jump to the real world and slaughter the writers who created him and his series in the first place. Now, as crazy as it may sound, a loose version of this story could be exactly the thing Deadpool 3 needs to accomplish all of its objectives. Many fans are under the assumption that Deadpool 3 will be the first entry in the franchise set within the MCU, but what if, possibly, it actually tells the tale of how Reynolds‘ unkillable mercenary makes it from his original timeline to the mainline MCU instead?

    In theory, Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe could work on the big screen as Deadpool Kills the X-Men Universe – or, something like that. Doing this would allow for Marvel Studios to stay true to Deadpool’s typical R-rated fashion while creating a definitive end for Fox’s former cinematic universe and giving fans their Wolverine/Deadpool meet-up all at once. The beginning of the story could remain the same, with the X-Men finally having their fill of Wade Wilson and sending him off to a mental asylum. There, he could be brainwashed by Psycho-Man, who in the film version could be from the MCU’s Quantum Realm as opposed to the comic Microverse. After all, Deadpool 3 will be released not long after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The first major difference could also occur here, with Wilson going berserk not because he realizes everyone is in a comic book, but because he realizes himself and the other mutants are living in the wrong Cinematic Universe. He becomes aware of the MCU, perhaps through Quantum means, and decides he’d like to end the Fox-Verse so he can switch gears and join the more popular franchise.

    Admittedly, Ryan Reynolds‘ take on Deadpool has been much softer than the comic version, with romantic plotlines and found family scenarios turning him into more of a hero along the way. It’s entirely possible Marvel and Reynolds find a way to incorporate this into the film while adapting this excruciatingly dark plot. Maybe, as Wade makes his way through every mutant in the universe (goodbye to James McAvoy‘s team of merry misfits), characters like Zazie Beetz‘ Domino or Julian Dennison‘s Firefist try to stop him but ultimately join him on his mission as they realize what’s really going on. Either way, the baseline story arc remains, and it only needs a few tweaks to continue working surprisingly well. Partway through the movie, where Taskmaster would have come into play in the comic, Jackman‘s Wolverine could step in as the theatrical replacement hellbent on ending Deadpool’s reign of terror.

    With his specific abilities – tracking, healing factor, adamantium claws, etc. – Logan could be the one hunting Wade throughout the movie, resulting in the epic final duel fans have waited years for on film. The ending, hypothetically, could also be the same as the book, with Man-Thing (who is set to make his MCU debut in October’s Werewolf by Night) and the Nexus of All-Realities allowing Wade to finally make his jump to the MCU with the Fox-Verse all but dust behind him. Feige and company could also engineer the ending to include whatever Fox-based characters they’d like to have in the MCU with their original actors.

    This theory is currently pretty baseless, but it is fun speculation, and if true, would tie Deadpool 3 in perfectly with the Multiverse Saga. If they really want to have fun with it, they could even include other formerly Fox-owned properties in the film to show their demise as well. John Krasinski joked about appearing alongside Jackman and Reynolds as Reed Richards on Twitter, which perhaps implies that he’s been contacted to perish on screen once more as the official Fox-Verse variant of Mr. Fantastic. That would be a wonderful running gag, and, along with really this entire theoretical pitch, is something that feels incredibly up Deadpool’s dark, twisted, sardonic alley.

    Court is now in session and Jennifer Walters is here to reprsent the defendant in the matter of Superhuman law. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has finally hit Disney+ as the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and seems to be one of the studios most unique projects yet. With it comes a whole slew of C-listers and D-Lister heroes and villains that have found themselves in legal trouble.

    The Prosecution Calls To The Stand: Man-Bull!

    Before he was the monstrosity he is now, William Taurens, also known as Bull Taurus, was a goon that worked for Mr. Kline, an android known as MK-9 sent from the future to stop an impending apocalypse posing as a mob boss. Kline had tasked Taurens and his partner in crime, Itch to kidnap random people off the streets to be used as subjects in his testing trials. William and Itch were stopped by Daredevil, but due to their failure, were subject to MK-9’s test themselves in which William Taurens was transformed into the malignant mammal we know today.

    This punishment didn’t stop him, however, as Taurens hit the streets yet again, intent on kidnapping more victims. Of course, Daredevil stopped him once more, and he reverted back to his human form.

    When in Man-Bull form, Taurens possesses some pretty basic superhuman abilities such as strength, invulnerability and endurance. When in a state of intense rage his adrenaline pushes him into an unstable mood that actually allows him to control bovines through psionic means.

    Mann-Bull made his live-action debut in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, now streaming on Disney+.
