‘Star Wars: Visions’ Episode “The Village Bride” Qualifies for 2022’s Oscars

Lucasfilm explored some new venues with this year’s release of Star Wars: Visions. They worked with various famous Anime studios that each got the chance to create stories that are inspired by the famous franchise. It offered quite a diverse selection of stories, such as a rock opera featuring familiar characters from the original trilogy. Well, it seems that one of the many shorts is now qualified to get an Oscar nomination for 2022.

CartoonBrew revealed the current list of 84 films that are up for a nomination. Disney is quite represented with their shorts Us Again, Nona, and Twenty Something. Hidden in the list at #80 is the Visions‘ episode by Hitoshi Haga titled The Village Bride. So far, it seems to be the only episode to nab a nomination in the Animated Short Films category.

‘Us Again,’ ‘Nona’ and ‘Twenty Something’ Among 84 Animated Short Films Qualified for 2022’s Oscars

The Oscars pull in a lot of eyes from around the world. It’s about celebrating films, no matter if it’s an animated film, drama, comedy, or musical. Among the many categories is also the famous celebrated short films. There’s still some time until the event happens, but it seems that a qualifying list has found its way online. CartoonBrew shared the qualifying list which contains 84 short films up for the nomination.

They do name comparison to last year’s 96 nominated shorts, which, to be fair, was an all-time record. The qualification period was also shortened by two months due to the pandemic. The list contains quite a few different shorts from all over the world like Angakusajaujuq: The Shaman’s Apprentice, Barking Orders, The Boy and the Mountain, Monster Pets: A Hotel Transylvania Short, and many more. Disney+ is also represented with its shorts Us Again, as well as the Sparkshorts Nona and Twenty Something.

There are three ways to get qualified for an Oscar nomination. It needs to be publicly exhibited in one of the U.S. cities under specific conditions. They can also take home an award at one of the designated festivals, or even a Student Academy Award. You can check the full list by clicking here.

  • Playground Entertainment Adapting Korean Graphic Novel ‘Moms’

Playground Entertainment Adapting Korean Graphic Novel ‘Moms’

It looks like Playground Entertainment has set their sites on a new series, as Deadline reports they’ll bring the South Korean graphic novel Moms to life. Yeong-shin Ma‘s work is a story about three Korean women, who start to fight back against their loneliness where they risk their livelihoods for a more exciting life. It’s a story about the weight of expectation and being stuck in an unhealthy relationship.

The book has garnered some critical acclaim as it won the Harvey Award for Best International Book. Ma wrote and illustrated the story after asking his mother about her life and thoughts. It opened up the gateways to explore what kind of things his mother faced without him realizing it. So, he explored the ups and downs of living as a middle-aged woman in South Korea.

Playground Entertainment is currently developing a Starz drama titled Dangerous Liaisons and Peacock’s The Undeclared War. It is run by Colin Callender, who used to work at HBO Films and took his experience with him to this new production company. The book was acquired by Scott Huff and David Stern who are currently overseeing the project.

  • ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Spider-Man DLC to Release Later This Month

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Spider-Man DLC to Release Later This Month

It’s been quite the wait but since his reveal ahead of Marvel’s Avengers release, but Spider-Man is finally joining the game. The controversial PlayStation exclusive character has long been teased and was finally unveiled as part of the second roadmap. In their latest blog, they’ve announced that he’ll arrive alongside the game’s first raid against a returning Klaw on November 30th. That isn’t all, as it will also include all the content that was teased as part of the second roadmap.

    Image

They don’t give away much, but they do officially give his hero event a name. It’ll be titled “Spider-Man: With Great Power,” which includes his story and unlockable challenges as part of the Avengers Initiative. Not just that, we did even get a short synopsis on what we can expect from his appearance:

Peter Parker uncovers AIM’s new plan to acquire technology that could make their Synthoid army unstoppable and total domination inevitable. He must partner with the Avengers to stop this looming threat, and forms a tentative friendship with Ms. Marvel and Black Widow while keeping his identity hidden. As a Hero accustomed to working solo, he struggles with the new dynamics of working with a team. Will he join up full time with the Avengers, or stay independent in his fight against AIM?

It’s an interesting idea to explore Spidey working in a team as part of his story. Crazy to think it’s going to release this soon, as we haven’t had any details on the character, his design, or even who will voice act him. Many hoped that Yuri Lowenthal would return, but there are many voice actors that brought this character to life in the past. There’s a good chance we might find out next week if we’re this close to his release.

  • BREAKING: Gael Garcia Bernal Boards Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night

BREAKING: Gael Garcia Bernal Boards Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night

Gael Garcia Bernal is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Per The Wrap, the actor is set to headline the forthcoming Disney+ Halloween Special from Marvel Studios believed to be Werewolf by Night. Details on the forthcoming project are sparse, however, production is slated to begin in early 2022.

With the project thought to be Werewolf by Night, it seems likely the actor is playing the Jake Gomez iteration of the character. Gomez, of course, was the second Werewolf by Night of the character, having debuted in Werewolf by Night #1 by Taboo, Benjamin Jackendoff and Scot Eaton. Prior to Gomez, there was Jack Russell, the first Werewolf by Night, who was created by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog and first appeared in a 1972 issue of Marvel Spotlight.

Bernal is a huge get for Marvel Studios and Disney+. The Mexican-born actor has built up quite a resume throughout his career, having starred in Coco for Disney, as well as nabbing the leading role in Amazon’s critically-acclaimed Mozart in the Jungle. He most recently starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old. Up next for the actor is the HBO Max miniseries Station Eleven, based on Emily St. John Mandel’s novel of the same name.

Prior to Bernal’s casting, it was thought Marvel Studios was eyeing Anthony Ramos (In the Heights, Hamilton) for the leading role.

  • ‘Hawkeye’ Producer on Drawing Inspiration from the Fraction/Aja Run in the Comics

‘Hawkeye’ Producer on Drawing Inspiration from the Fraction/Aja Run in the Comics

Fans are eagerly awaiting Hawkeye, the next Marvel Studios original Disney+ series. Recently, Marvel Studios executive producer Trinh Tran spoke about how actress Hailee Steinfeld was basically made for the role of Kate Bishop, the young archer Clint Barton teams up within the series. Steinfeld also apparently feels quite attached to the character. In an interview with EW, the actress shared that, “[d]iving into all the information out there on Kate Bishop felt like a dream.”

In an interview with EW, Steinfeld revealed that much of her inspiration for her character came from the critically acclaimed Hawkeye comic by Matt Fraction and David Aja. While we already knew that the series would draw heavily from the well-known run, apparently, the comic particularly influenced the dynamic between Kate and Clint. In the same interview, Tran explained:

“The Fraction/Aja style and tone is what we were really gravitating towards…[o]nce they encounter each other and go off on this journey together, there’s so much they can bounce off each other.”

    Trinh Tran

The witty mentor-mentee relationship between the two archers was certainly a standout aspect of the Fraction/Aja comic– if Hawkeye can manage to pull off something similar, or successfully adapt any of the other Hawkeye comic components, the series may end up being something quite special.

The first two episodes of Hawkeye premiere on Disney+ later this month.

  • Deep Thoughts: Hypothetical Marvel Studios 2023 Release Calendar, V2

Deep Thoughts: Hypothetical Marvel Studios 2023 Release Calendar, V2

Earlier this year, we ran one hypothetical scenario for Marvel Studios 2023 release slate. A lot has changed since then (including the reshuffling of the film slate and a streaming series delay), so with Disney Plus Day coming up next week, we thought we’d shoot our shot at predicting how 2022 and 2023 might look. Here’s 2023, V2.

Whereas 2022 started off with a Star Wars series, it’s possible that the late-2021 reshuffling of Marvel Studios projects may have allowed for a perfect bit of Disney synergy.

This could allow the Disney+ Secret Invasion series to kick off the year and lead almost directly into The Marvels, a film with which it will share characters and, potentially, some plot points. If that’s the case, we could see an episode of Marvel Studios: Legends catch us up on Nick Fury and Talos on January 4th ahead of Secret Invasion’s 5-week run (prediction a 2-episode premiere here to keep things from overlapping).

Marvel Studios: Legends episodes for Kamala Khan, Monica Rambeau, and, of course, Carol Danvers are a good bet the week of the release of their team-up appearance in The Marvels. If Disney+ keeps pushing these summaries out, we could see them on February 15th.

The Marvels is starting to sound like another one of Marvel Studios’ highly ambitious team-up sequels, on par with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: Ragnarok. Looking back, those films set not only their main characters but also the supporting cast on new journeys that lead to some amazing, redefining arcs. We could see that happening here when The Marvels drops into theaters on its new date, February 17th, 2023.

It can’t be all Marvel all the time. Season 3 of The Mandalorian would fit in nicely following The Marvels, meaning the next MCU project we could see would be episodes of Marvel Studios: Legends recapping the journeys of the Guardians. There would, by this time, be a LOT to do, so we could see the most loaded Legends day on May 3rd, 2023.

James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, originally supposed to be in theaters in May of 2020, will finally arrive on May 5th, 2023. Adam Warlock, played by Will Poulter, is set to make his debut and, presumably, give the Guardians a hard time. However, we know that Gunn has said this film will be Rocket’s film and that it’s the final chapter in his telling of the story of this group, so Warlock will certainly not be the only new character we meet.

Following the final chapter of the OG Guardians of the MCU, it’s likely we’ll get a bit of a break from the MCU, maybe for something like the Lucasfilm Ahsoka series in May. Marvel Studios could get back in the game with a Marvel Studios: Legends episode on Maya Lopez (and maybe Wilson Fisk) on June 7th before her series debuts the next week.

We know almost nothing at this point about the solo Echo series other than it is described as a Hawkeye spinoff. There are rumors that both Hawkeyes and Kingpin will appear and that they are searching for Native American actors to, we think, play members of Echo’s family. This one has the feel of something that can be a pretty original spin on the character and it’s key that the focus is on Alaqua Cox’s Lopez. That said, don’t be surprised if some other familiar faces show up throughout the series.

By the time Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania hits theaters, it’ll have been 5 years since Ant-Man and The Wasp was in theaters. A little catching up on Scott, Cassie, Hope, Janet, and Hank sounds good…oh yeah, and Kang. Expect a few Marvel Studios: Legends episodes to air the week the film hits theaters.

While Peyton Reed remains on board as the director, writer Jeff Loveness came on board AM&TW:Q to put a fresh spin on an existing draft. I’ve always heard this was going to be a much bigger film than either of the first two and having Jonathan Majors’ Kang involved certainly does nothing to dispel that rumor, though I am VERY curious what this one ends up being all about. We’ll all find out together July 28th, 2023.

Another year, another season of What If…?.

Riri Williams is set to make her debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in July of 2022, so the events of her show will almost certainly be influenced by/spin out of the events of that film. An episode of Marvel Studios: Legends will help new fans catch up on her story and sort through the 3 suits she goes through in the Black Panther sequel.

Even though her series was announced in late 2020, it really does seem like it’ll be mid-to-late 2023 before we see our first episode of Ironheart. It won’t start filming until 2022 and will be part of a backlog of projects when it does. With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever being pushed to November 2022, it’s all but a sure thing we don’t see this follow-up series until 2023.

This whole feature is an exercise in making wild guesses but by the time we’re at this portion of the 2023 calendar, the guesses are even wilder. Since we’re going with Cap 4 as the final 2023 film, we’re going with an episode or more of Marvel Studios: Legends ahead of time to catch us up on whoever needs to be caught up on.

Captain America 4 is going here simply because, as of writing this, it’s the first movie scheduled to go into production in 2022 (currently set for a June start). Blade is set to go into production one month later, so it’s would be easy to imagine it could be here instead, but I went with the simplest explanation.

Should Armor Wars be the MCU series that rounds out 2023, some episodes of Marvel Studios: Legends will be a necessity to catch up on Rhodey and whomever else they pack in here.

By the time this series streams (hypothetically), it’ll be about 3 years since its surprise announcement at the 2020 Disney Plus Investor Day. Like Ironheart, Armor Wars is, in part, being pushed down the line as other projects get pushed down the line. In this case, we know that as of November 2021, the project was still in the EARLIEST days of development, so it’s reasonable to assume it won’t go into production until late 2022 so a late 2023 release date sounds right. It’s also intriguing that this film could have some themes in common with Captain America 4 (maybe they both deal, to some extent, with Sharon’s work as the Power Broker or with these heroes continuing to work through the legacies of their friends?) Either way, this show has a ton of potential to introduce some wild new characters to the MCU (CONTROLLER AND STILT-MAN!!) and it’s hard to think we still have 2 years to wait on it.

Why anyone would try to guess what’s going to happen in 2023 when we aren’t even sure what’s happening in 2022 yet is beyond us, but we did it anyway. Again, bookmark this bad boy so we can come back to it later for a laugh.

  • Marvel Studios’ ‘Eternals’ Pulled From Release in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait

Marvel Studios’ ‘Eternals’ Pulled From Release in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait

Marvel Studios’ Eternals is no longer releasing in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or Qatar. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film was banned from being released in the three countries do the inclusion of a same-sex couple in the film.

Eternals was originally slated to hit theaters in the Gulf Region on Nov. 11, shortly after its release in the United States. However, the film has been quietly removed from appearing on websites in the three countries. Interestingly, though, it is still showing as coming soon in the United Arab Emirates.

The ban comes as Disney was given a series of edit requests to make on Eternals to adhere to the local censors. Disney, however, refused to comply with the requests, resulting in the film being pulled from release. While not on the record, it’s thought one of the requests was to cut the on-screen kiss between Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) and his on-screen husband Ben (Haaz Sleiman).

Phastos, of course, is the first gay superhero to appear within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which makes the on-screen kiss between the two characters monumental. Unfortunately, though, because homosexuality is still illegal across the Gulf, the depiction of it in the film was always going to ruffle some feathers.

Eternals hits theaters tomorrow. It is directed by Chloé Zhao and stars an ensemble cast including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie.

  • REVIEW: ‘Doom Patrol’ – 3×9, “Evil Patrol”

REVIEW: ‘Doom Patrol’ – 3×9, “Evil Patrol”

Season 3’s penultimate episode of Doom Patrol is all about dysfunctional relationships. In fact, it is nearly impossible to point to any element of this episode that isn’t quite clearly a representation of a rocky and toxic relationship. It’s a theme that pervades Doom Patrol as a whole, but it was certainly wrung out in all of its glory in the previous episode. Evil Patrol makes it quite clear that the bulk of this season did the messy work of getting our characters to a significantly different place than they have ever been before in the series. As a result, this episode feels like Doom Patrol is now at a spot where the audience is no longer forced to try and figure out and parse through what is going on, but rather just getting to enjoy it uninhibited. And this episode—which could also be fairly named “Plot Patrol”—does what the series does best: be extraordinarily fun.

This season of Doom Patrol seemed to be setting up Rita as a major player at the very start of it, and it’s become more than obvious that Rita is really who is driving the show now. Even though the clearest conflict is Rita against Laura, Laura only becomes an arguably villainous figure in the present day because Rita pushes her into survival mode. Without Rita plotting to destroy Laura, the latter never would have returned to the Brotherhood of Evil or hatched any nefarious plot. Rita’s obsession with revenge is the only true adversarial threat of the story at this point—it’s pretty safe to say for certain that Season 3 does indeed lack a strong villain, but it isn’t suffering for it.

Rita’s loss of Malcolm turns her into a staunch vengeful personality with the confidence and motivation that comes along with it. It allows her to be an extremely different Rita than ever before. She makes it clear to Laura that she won’t let her ruin anything else and that she won’t stop fighting until she’s ended her life. She doesn’t hesitate to start gathering a team to help her, but she quickly realizes that almost all of her potential “assets”—Vic, Jane, and Larry—are no longer assets. It doesn’t really deter her, and she’s more than willing to go the extra mile in keeping everyone around to help. That’s how desperate she is to get revenge on Laura, and that’s how clear it is that she has little concern for the friends she used to have much more compassion for.

Her loss of herself seems most apparent when she becomes extremely paranoid that Cliff’s daughter Clara is actually Laura in disguise. It comes off as more of a blow to Cliff’s sense of worth, but it turns out that Laura did, in fact, infiltrate Doom Manor, but as Clara’s baby. The result is one of the funniest moments the series has put together—Laura shapeshifts into some kind of elf-sized, disturbingly proportioned creature that looks like it could have come straight out of a Shrek film. She essentially bounces around while the new and mostly depowered team swat at her with objects. The intentionally rough visual effects, including the awkward tempo of it all, fits with the series’ aesthetic perfectly, and it’s just a near-perfect moment. In the end, Laura teleports away with Cliff.

The fight comes after Laura rejoins the Brotherhood of Evil. The group—which is just the Brain and Monsieur Mallah—is a standout in Season 3 despite being minimally involved and having little screen time. Laura finds the two living in a retirement community in Florida, done with the life of the Brotherhood. Laura convinces the Brain to work with her to both keep herself from being killed but also to supposedly destroy Niles Caulder’s legacy. While they ultimately betray her, it’s not until after the Brain puts himself in Cliff’s body—he is living his best life. While the Brotherhood stand out particularly for the humor they bring, it’s ironic how they just truly aren’t villains here. Both Rita and Laura essentially use the Brotherhood as an excuse to target the other, and the threatening-sounding organization is just sort of the connector. The Brain and Mallah were perfectly content with their retirement before these two women came along.

Apart from the main Rita-Laura situation, the other characters have strong moments both alone and together. Vic probably has the rawest and compelling moment with his conversation with his father after Vic has his tech removed. Joivan Wade really delivers, and the scene grows from comforting nostalgia to completely chilling. It’s also the best Vic/Cyborg mental and emotional moment the series has given us. Vic’s arc was always very interesting—and this moment doesn’t make it more or less so—but it always felt like it was missing some intensity. Vic’s pushback against his dad’s attempts to convince him that turning him into Cyborg was the right thing to do, and claiming that he is ready to be able to actually define himself undoubtedly provides that intensity. It also feels like a watershed moment in the character’s development that was a long time coming. While we arguably “lost” the character of Cyborg, the fact that Vic otherwise remains himself is pretty cool. He’s such a strong personality with a good heart. When the team asks him why he came back to Doom Manor now that he is “normal”, he simply says, “I live here.” He has no interest in not being some kind of hero or doing the right thing—losing the tech highlights that Vic, not Cyborg, was always the hero.

Larry’s parasite baby is a delight. We get sweet and funny dad moments, but we also learn that the little larva can sense and react to everyone’s emotions leading to Larry being zapped by it every few minutes. Jane and Kay are still on rocky and fragile ground, especially now that the rest of the personas have left the Underground. Kay tries to take the reins but flees when she gets scared, and it becomes clear that the Underground will destroy itself if it remains empty. Cliff gets convinced that Clara coming to help him is too good to be true because he doesn’t deserve another second chance.

The overall theme of “dysfunctional relationships” is at its height at the end of the episode when the team takes the bus to go save Cliff. Everyone is resentful that Vic seems to actually have figured things out about himself after the eternal flagellation. Larry confronts Rita about how the mission really has nothing to do with Cliff for her, and she admits she chose not to save them all from dying to not risk erasing the life she built with Malcolm. Larry’s parasite makes it clear that everyone is emotionally toxic. It’s entertaining and laugh-worthy, and it seems true to the “team” we have known in Doom Patrol

Because this episode seems to have started from somewhat new ground in terms of the overall plot—notably, getting the Brotherhood of Evil involved as a major piece—it was not predictable and it makes it hard to predict where the finale is headed. This isn’t anxiety-inducing, as the series in general and the second half of Season 3, in particular, has been very successful at making stories come out of nowhere and still be great. While we can say goodbye to the idea of a “big bad”, the Rita-Laura situation can probably be seen as a villain in and of itself, with Rita in particular actually giving off the “evil” vibes. Evil Patrol sets up an entertaining finale at least, and probably an exciting one as well. While only time will tell, Doom Patrol has done the work this season to make it something special.

  • EXCLUSIVE: John Leguizamo Wishes New ‘MARIO’ Film Was More Inclusive

EXCLUSIVE: John Leguizamo Wishes New ‘MARIO’ Film Was More Inclusive

In September, Nintendo shocked the world when it announced Chris Pratt would be taking the iconic role of Mario in a new animated Super Mario Bros. film adaptation. The casting quickly became a hot topic on social media, mixed with discussions surrounding the reveal of popular names like Jack Black, Seth Rogan, and Anya Taylor-Joy in supporting roles. Now, the actor who played Luigi in the original live-action Mario film is weighing in.

During an exclusive interview with Murphy’s Multiverse, John Leguizamo was asked about his thoughts on the new movie. He responded by explaining his mixed feelings about a new take on the story and its casting process:

Y’know, Super Mario Bros. holds a special place in my heart. It’s twenty-five years, I think, since it was made, and they’re remaking it. So I’m glad that the movie was good enough that they want to make a remake. That’s a good sign. I wish they would have been more inclusive and had more Latinx in it, like as innovative as the first one was.

The Ice Age actor is referring, of course, to the casting of a Latinx man like himself as the traditionally Italian Luigi. The role will be occupied by Charlie Day when the new animated film arrives. However, Leguizamo does seem open to the idea of returning to the franchise in another form. Of course, the decision ultimately belongs to executives at Universal. When asked if he would participate in the new Mario or a potential sequel, he responded:

Yeah, I think I know how to fix what didn’t work in the original. I think I’ve got all the secret sauce. If they come to me, I’d be willing to help out.

Leguizamo is historically a big proponent for Latinx representation in the film industry. He can next be seen in Disney’s next big animated feature Encanto when it hits theaters on Nov. 24.

Along with the release of Encanto, Leguizamo is set to make his comic book writing debut with PhenomX, hitting shelves later this month.
