RUMOR: HBO Max’s ‘Green Lantern’ Series to Be Similar in Tone to HBO’s ‘Watchmen’

Since the platform launched we’ve known that HBO Max would be developing a Green Lantern-based series exclusively for the streamer. The series has been developing at a much slower pace than others, but we know that the first season will span decades. Certain episodes will focus on different lanterns. We know a considerable amount about the series, especially its characters and what their stories might entail. Yet, a new rumor by Illuminerdi might be hinting that the story might be much darker than anticipated.

The series won’t be like other superhero properties, as it’s reportedly set to be much darker in tone. and being compared to HBO’s Watchmen limited series. This is great news if you consider which members of the Lantern Corp will be at the forefront of the series. Alan Scott will deal with being a closeted police officer in the 1940s, while Bree Jarta and Simon Baz face racism on their home planet. Jessica Cruz will most likely be dealing with her mental health and crippling anxiety if they take cues from her comic book origins. This darker tone is perfect for the series, as it gives the writers a much easier job bringing these characters and their stories to life without having to sugarcoat their development into full-fledged lanterns.

Green Lantern currently has no set release date but will reportedly begin filming soon. The series has cast Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner, Jeremy Irvine as Alan Scott, and Tobias Menzies as Sinestro. There is still no word on if the series will be set within the greater DCEU, but one can only hope that isn’t cast away to another unnamed universe in the ever-expanding Multiverse Warner Brothers is building with DC.

‘Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Delayed Until the Second Half of 2022

There’s been much anticipation for Firaxis Games’ take on the Marvel universe. The moment they revealed Midnight Suns, it teased a mystical direction for the characters. Alongside staples like Wolverine, Iron Man, and Captain Marvel, the world also gets to play as Ghost Rider or even an original character. It was originally going to release March 2022, but the developer took to Twitter to confirm that the game will face a delay into the second half of 2022. Sadly, no specific release window has been named.

Midnight Suns is a very different beast from Guardians of the Galaxy or even Marvel’s Avengers. You’ll receive cards that offer you unique abilities for your team. One of the main gimmicks is that you can create your own character known only as Hunter who has a connection to the game’s main antagonist, Lilith. The game also moves away from the classic action concept but rather explores how these superheroes work in a tactical-RPG game style. So, you’ll get flashier moments while shuffling your team across the map to take on these new mystical foes. With the delay, it also means we’ll have to wait a little longer for more insight into what the game has to offer.

  • RUMOR: ‘Moon Knight’s Production Designer Stefania Cella Joins Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade’

RUMOR: ‘Moon Knight’s Production Designer Stefania Cella Joins Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade’

While a release date has not yet been announced for Marvel Studios’ Blade, it seems the studio is moving full steam ahead on the project. Back in July, it was revealed that Mogul Mowgli director Bassam Tariq signed on for the project. He’ll be working from a script by Stacy Osei-Kuffour (HBO’s Watchmen), who joined the project back in February.

As it stands, the only cast member attached to the film is Mahershala Ali, who was announced to be playing the character at SDCC back in 2019. With casting still underway, the Marvel Studios film looks to be building its crew. A new rumor from Geek Vibes Nation suggests Stefania Cella will serve as the production designer on Blade. Cella has previously worked on Moon Knight for Marvel Studios, as well as Sony’s forthcoming Morbius adaption.

Production is expected to kick-off on the project sometime next year.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Might Be the MCU’s Second-Longest Film

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Might Be the MCU’s Second-Longest Film

Spider-Man: No Way Home seems to cause a fan uproar every day over some new details revealed or rumor tweeted. With all the information around, it’s been wondered: how long will No Way Home have to be to fit in all of its multiversal madness?

Apparently, we now have an answer. On Ingresso, a Brazilian ticketing service owned by Fandango, the No Way Home is listed as being 159-minutes long. In other words, it looks like one of the most highly anticipated Marvel Studios films might be one of the MCU’s longest at 2 hours and 39 minutes.

If true, it would make No Way Home the second-longest MCU film ever behind Avengers: Endgame’s 3 hours and 2 minutes. The upcoming Eternals recently made similar headlines after it was revealed that it would span 2 hours and 37 minutes.

In any event, fans looking forward to the finale of the Homecoming trilogy will certainly have plenty of movie to sit through when it’s released on Dec. 17.

  • Zazie Beetz Would Love to Return as Domino

Zazie Beetz Would Love to Return as Domino

It’s hard to believe it’s already been over three years since Zazie Beetz made her one and only appearance as Domino in Deadpool 2. The character was far-and-away the breakout star of the film, giving both Josh Brolin‘s Cable and Ryan Reynolds‘ titular character a run for their money. Now, the actress says she’s ready to make her return to the role as soon as Disney is ready to give her the call.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, the Atlanta actress expressed her enthusiasm regarding the mutant mercenary with the power of probability. And while details regarding Deadpool 3 and Domino’s role are sparse, Beetz is ready to suit up again.

I would love to revisit Domino. I would love to do a Deadpool 345719. I’ve also wanted to be like, ‘Maybe I could just do my own origin story.’ I feel honored to have been able to depict her on screen and to have played with her, as her. I love her and so I would be more than happy to revisit her on camera. And I think I will. If Disney doesn’t make it happen, I’ll make it happen.

The state of the Deadpool film franchise is currently unknown, as Disney took control of it’s future from Fox in 2019’s massive acquisition. Both existing entries proved to be exceedingly popular with fans, which makes it likely the studio will one day produce another installment. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and Reynolds himself have done just about everything but announce an official release date for the project, which could hit theaters as part of the MCU’s next phase of films.

As it stands, Deadpool 3 does not have a release date.

  • Chip Zdarsky and Jacob Phillip’s ‘Newburn’ Already Optioned for TV

Chip Zdarsky and Jacob Phillip’s ‘Newburn’ Already Optioned for TV

Today saw the release of the first issue of Newburn, a crime comic published by Image that follows a private detective, Ed Newburn, as he navigates the NYC underworld. Chip Zdarsky (Stillwater, Daredevil) and Jacob Phillips (That Texas Blood) worked together on the project which has debuted to very positive reviews so far.

Apparently someone believed in the book early on as the duo revealed that Newburn has already been optioned for a TV series, which the duo revealed last night during a live stream with the guys at Comic Book Club. The talk about Newburn comes up around the 18 minute mark.

While they didn’t reveal which service has optioned the book, Zdarsky does mention that whichever studio it was needed nothing more than the first 3 issues to make the call. You can probably pick up a few copies of Newburn at your LCS today and flip them for a profit in the near future!

  • Son of Satan Creator Doesn’t Think ‘Helstrom’ Took Enough Influence From the Comics

Son of Satan Creator Doesn’t Think ‘Helstrom’ Took Enough Influence From the Comics

During the fall of Marvel Television, the company managed to squeak out a single-season adaptation of the character Daimon Hellstrom, also known as the Son of Satan. Titled simply Helstrom, the live-action series took several liberties in bringing its characters to life. Jeph Loeb and the folks at Marvel Television took steps to ensure Daimon and his sister Satana, renamed here as Ana Helstrom, would come off as more grounded and a little less fantastical. Roy Thomas, who co-created the characters back in 1973, revealed in a recent interview with ComicBook.com that he took issue with the changes to his work.

As he bluntly states, Thomas feels the creatives should have leaned more on the source material:

They should’ve followed the comic books. Somebody doing the series should’ve read the comic book. Maybe they could’ve made a good series out of that. They could have even left the extra ‘L.

Thomas went on to expand his frustrations to other live-action adaptations, citing the successful live-action Incredible Hulk series as another example of changing too much from the source material:

I mean, the guy who did the Hulk show, he just buries the Hulk various times. He thought, ‘Oh, I paid no attention to that comic book. I went to things like Frankenstein, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,’ And gee, obviously Stan Lee and Jack Kirby could never have been smart enough to think of something like that. These guys have to think they’re reinventing the wheel every time they do something in order to justify their enormous salaries, I suppose.

With Marvel Television having closed its doors last year, a renewal for the series seemed unlikely from the start. Unfortunately, those hoping for a second season were upset to receive official confirmation that the series would not be returning last December.

If you’ve yet to check out the Helstrom siblings, you can catch Helstrom in it’s entirety on Hulu.

  • Keith David Joins ‘Stargirl’ Season 3 as Mister Bones

Keith David Joins ‘Stargirl’ Season 3 as Mister Bones

The second season of Stargirl saw the arrival of Eclipso to Blue Valley, a villain who effectively dismantled the Justice Society, member by member, while barely lifting a finger. The second season just recently wrapped up its run on the CW, and filming is already underway for Season 3. Not much is known about what’s to come in the next season, but it seems a minor mention in a previous episode season will indeed set the stage for the upcoming season of Stargirl

In recent episodes, we saw Courtney and Pat make their way to the Helix Institute in search of Jenny Hayden. Jenny, of course, is on her own mission as she looks for her brother Todd Rice. Upon their departure, there’s a brief scene in which Louise Love, head nurse at Helix, makes a phone call to one Mister Bones. While it’s not clear, we can assume he is the mastermind behind the operation at Helix. At the very end of the Season 2 finale, we finally see the reveal of Mister Bones himself. Bones is on his way to Blue Valley, Nebraska, in search of more candidates for his experiments at the institute. The most shocking part of this reveal was that the person voicing Bones is none other than Keith David, best known for his work on SpawnThe Thing and The Princess and The Frog.

We previously speculated that Helix and Bones would be returning to Stargirl as possible villains in season 3. It’s still unknown if other characters like Penny Dreadful, Baby Boom, Kritter, or Tao Jones will join Bones on his way to Blue Valley. It’s also unclear if Jenny will reunite with her brother Todd.

A release date for Stargirl‘s third season has not yet been unveiled.
