  • Dan Stevens Seemingly Playing Kro in ‘ETERNALS’

Dan Stevens Seemingly Playing Kro in ‘ETERNALS’

Eternals features a lot of borderline obscure characters but easily the most obscure of the entire ensemble is the Deviant big bad Kro. So to hear Legion star Dan Stevens casually namedrop the character in an interview seems oddly peculiar. Stevens was spotted two years ago hanging out with the Eternals cast in London, prompting fan speculation then. In an interview with Collider, Stevens had this to say about the speculation.

Kro comment [laughs]. Even if I could say anything, I wouldn’t be able to and would have to kill you on Zoom. Is that cryptic enough?

So unless Stevens just happens to be a real diehard comic book reader that knows the deep cuts, this is a solid indication that he’s playing Kro. The performer playing the CGI character has been noticeably omitted from any of the marketing materials. Having an actor as amazing as Stevens behind the character is assuring, to say the least. It’ll be interesting to find out if he did the motion capture in addition to the voice.

  • Animated ‘Super Mario’ Film’s All-Star Cast Revealed During Nintendo Direct

Animated ‘Super Mario’ Film’s All-Star Cast Revealed During Nintendo Direct

Here’s a rather surprising reveal during a Nintendo Direct. We got our first official announcement for the upcoming Super Mario film adaptation by Illumination. Not only is the film set to release Holiday of 2022 with North America getting a definite release on December 21st, but we also got a glimpse into the film’s rather massive cast. Chris Pratt will play Mario and will face off against Jack Black‘s Bowser. Seth Rogen will take on the role of Donkey Kong while Peach is played by Anya Taylor-Joy. You can check out the full cast list alongside the poster right here:

It’s great that Charles Martinet, the original voice of most of the Super Mario characters, will have cameos throughout the film. Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong is also quite a curious addition. In the game’s lore, Cranky is the original Donkey Kong you face off before even Mario got his name. It also matches up with the reveal that a character from the 1985 game, Wrecking Crew, getting added, as we’ll explore the early days of our unlikely hero. Shigeru Miyamoto did highlight that Mario will talk quite a bit, which makes sense with them hiring Chris Pratt in the role. We’ll still have to wait for our official look and here’s hoping we get to see Illumination’s vision in the near future.

  • Original ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’ Heading to Nintendo Switch

Original ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’ Heading to Nintendo Switch

In the latest Nintendo Direct, they have announced a rather curious addition to the console. Recently, we got the announcement that Knights of the Old Republic was getting a PlayStation 5 exclusive release. Yet, it confused many that the iconic franchise wouldn’t find a home on other consoles. Well, it looks like we might have an answer as they are adding the original game to Nintendo Switch.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake in Entwicklung - PC-WELT

It’s great to see Nintendo Switch becoming a safe haven for classic Star Wars games. They added some iconic games like Jedi Academy, Racers, and even Republic Commando. So, the addition of a classic franchise like Knights of the Old Republic makes sense. There is no word if the sequel will also get added, but they might be wanting to keep that for next year as a follow-up release. Either way, it’s great to revisit some classic games and the Nintendo Switch is becoming the home for many classic gaming franchises moving forward.

  • Misha Green Offers Updates on ‘Black Canary’ and Teases Comic Accurate Costume

Misha Green Offers Updates on ‘Black Canary’ and Teases Comic Accurate Costume

Over a year ago, Birds of Prey and The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn hit theaters worldwide. The film brought back Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn alongside some new additions to the DCEU. The most popular introduction was Jurnee Smollet as Black Canary, who fans immediately championed to get a spinoff. It took quite some time, but it finally got announced that she’ll reprise the role of Dinah Lance for a solo project. Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green set to write the film as an HBO Max exclusive.

Writer Misha Green recently took to Twitter for an impromptu Q&A and fans immediately jumped at the chance to get a bit more details on the upcoming Black Canary film. She naturally doesn’t give away any details but did offer some small glimpses behind the scenes. What may have caught many fans’ eyes is her teasing the classic costume from the comics. So, it adds some hope that she’ll wear the iconic biker jacket and fishnets.

She is currently actively researching for the project but doesn’t give away what might become the series’ main influence, but there was a hint at Gail Simone‘s work. The writer remains tight-lipped on what the series might dive into, but she did confirm that she’s going solo on this project in one of her tweets.

We got a tease that Dinah’s mother had a similar ability in the 2020 film, which could become an important part of the upcoming HBO Max film. While it is still probably some time until it releases, it’s exciting to see such passion behind the project. Smollet has also been very vocal about her love for the character and project. So, here’s hoping we’ll get to see their creative vision soon.

  • ‘Fortnite’: First Look at ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Inspired Tom Hardy Skin Leaks Online

‘Fortnite’: First Look at ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Inspired Tom Hardy Skin Leaks Online

The latest season of Fortnite kicked off the event with a brand new Carnage skin. Well, it looks like Sony and Marvel have one more skin inspired by Venom: Let There Be Carnage, as Twitter user @HYPEX shared a leaked image featuring a brand new Venom skin. Not only does it showcase the design from the films, but it seems the base version is a Tom Hardy-inspired skin for players to run around with. It’s not the first actor look-a-like that joined the project, as they’ve also recently added a Will Smith-inspired skin from Bad Boys.

The game has truly become a way for brands to promote various projects. Marvel’s Avengers game has also been pushing Marvel Cinematic Universe-inspired skins that showcase how intertwined their projects are at this stage. Fortnite has the advantage of not only being a multiplayer experience but also includes special events. In the past, they had collaborative events like an alien invasion or even an Ariana Grande digital concert. Who knows if we’ll get a future that has film events integrated into these unique experiences, as it continues to grow and combine countless brands.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘Daredevil’s Marc Jobst to Direct Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Pilot Episode

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Daredevil’s Marc Jobst to Direct Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Pilot Episode

Eiichiro Oda‘s One Piece has recently passed the 1,000 chapter mark and has been going strong since 1997. The journey of a young and ambitious pirate named Monkey D. Luffy spirals into an adventure unlike any other. With the end of its current Wano arc on the horizon, Netflix is trying its hand at bringing this iconic franchise to the west as a live-action adaptation. It’s been quiet since it first was announced in 2017 but picked up some pace a few months ago with the first look at their One Piece logo.

The Critical Order: One Piece: Unlimited Retrospective - East Blue Pt. 2

There are still some questions on the upcoming production and who might bring this series to life. Early on, Steven Madea joined as showrunner alongside Luke Cage writer Matt Owens. We can now exclusively confirm that the series’ pilot episode also has found its director in Daredevil and Black Sails‘ Marc Jobst. He and Owens have some shared history, as the director also worked on the Luke Cage episode from season two titled “Wig Out,” which Owens wrote. His experience with Black Sails, a Starz series that explored the golden age of piracy, is also a great plus. He may have hinted at his involvement back in March in a Q&A with Newcastle University.

The project is currently working under the title “Project Panda,” which seemingly has changed at one point in pre-production as it was teased as “Project Roger” in May. It’s a fun reference to Oda‘s joke character Pandaman that he hides as an easter egg throughout the manga. Production was eyeing an August production start in Cape Town last year but got delayed due to the pandemic. The first season will explore the East Blue saga in ten episodes, as Luffy recruits the first members of the Straw Hat pirates before he sets out into the Grand Line.

  • HBO Max Developing a Three-Part Documentary on DC’s Legacy

HBO Max Developing a Three-Part Documentary on DC’s Legacy

It looks like HBO Max will be putting the spotlight on DC Comics’ rich history and influential legacy as part of a three-part documentary series. Oscar and Emmy-nominated director, and producer, Leslie Iwerks, will act as showrunner alongside Greg Berlanti. It’ll explore the early years of the company and how it evolved into the comic book giant we know today.

HBO Max is no stranger to DC, as the streaming service already features a number of titles including Doom Patrol, Titans, and the upcoming Peacemaker series. All that is in additional to working closely with Warner Bros. films. With comics assets as popular as they have become, it makes sense that DC would want to celebrate its successes and relive some of the world’s most beloved characters and stories. Jim Lee, Publisher and Chief Creative Officer at DC told Deadline:

DC has a rich legacy of over 80 years of iconic storytelling: from the introduction of the genre defining Super Hero Superman in 1938 to the amazing movies, TV shows, cartoons, games and comics which have been synonymous with superheroism for generations thereafter. We are so excited to dive into this history and bring fans along this amazing journey,

    Jim Lee

Iwerks previously received an Outstanding Nonfiction Special Emmy nomination for her work on The Pixar Story, a documentary that took audiences behind the scenes of the the animation legend. She will exeuctive produce with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Co-executive producers are Mark Catalena, Rachael Jerahian, and Jonathan Gabay. The series will be co-directed by Iwerks alongside Catalena.

  • Theory Thursday: Ultron Wants to Replace the Watcher in ‘What If…?’

Theory Thursday: Ultron Wants to Replace the Watcher in ‘What If…?’

The latest episode of What If…? finally unveiled the overarching plot that the series is building towards. After Thor made plans for a date, he and the Watcher were surprised by the welcoming of Ultron bots. From a mysterious portal, Ultron appeared in the body of Vision clad in the armor of his former shell. At that moment, the episode ends as even the all-knowing Watcher is confused that a once happy ending would get abrupted by tragedy once again. We, as viewers, are left wondering what his arrival means for the multiverse.

There are a few things we can take away from his sudden introduction. Ultron managed to achieve his goal from Avengers: Age of Ultron by adding his consciousness into the new body. We still have no confirmation if James Spader is returning to voice the character, but he didn’t return to voice the character in Avengers: Damage Control VR and might have moved on from the franchise. Still, there’s some hope they convinced him to return while he is busy filming The Blacklist.

He also is wielding all six Infinity Stones on his body, which he shouldn’t feel any side effects from due to his body not being organic. It also implies that this version of the character most likely succeeded in dropping Sokovia and wiping out Earth. We learn in the Age of Ultron that his primary goal is to create an empire of dust where only metal survives. If he achieved his goal on Earth, there’s the chance Thanos came after him due to possessing the Mind Stone. Once he fuses with the stone, he’ll felt the others and reunite them. It makes him one of the most formidable enemies within the multiverse.

Marvel's WHAT IF...? Assembles the Guardians of the Multiverse for New Hyundai Ad — GeekTyrant

They might be taking inspiration from the time when Ultron became the leader of the Phalanx during Annihilation: Conquest and with the complete domination of the galaxy, he sets his eyes on the multiverse. Yet, not to annihilate organic life but to rule over them in the mightiest position there is. He’s the worst aspect of Tony Stark and believes he can control the future. The best way to do so would be to replace the Watcher.

The reason for this theory is due to one single image potentially teasing his end goal. We see Vision in his Ultron armor floating above a scene. There’s a chance that the next episode ends with Ultron taking the Watcher’s position and narrating the final episode as the now fallen god-like entity summons together with the strongest warriors from across the multiverse. The consequences of him gaining the watchful eye of the entire multiverse but with the desire of intervention. Who knows what he would unleash if he obtained that power. If he wins, no place in the vast multiverse would be safe.

  • REVIEW: ‘TITANS’ Season 3 Episode 9 – Souls

REVIEW: ‘TITANS’ Season 3 Episode 9 – Souls

Episode 9 of this season of Titans is extremely baffling. On one hand, it makes no sense at all and feels completely out of place. Combine that with how corny and ridiculous it is this episode should have been a write-off. But yet, like its main characters, it manages to keep itself alive and be one of the most enjoyable rides of the entire series.

The episode finds our main three (dead) characters—Tim Drake, Donna Troy, and Hank Hall—in the black-and-white area of the afterlife where they are supposed to be on a literal train that takes them to the “final place.” Inexplicably, Tim and Donna are on the train at the same time but jump off the train because Tim desperately wants to be alive. Outside of the train, there is an entire rural outskirts-of-a-small-town type of area that generally consists of wooded areas and a road. There, they happen to run into none other than ‘Livin’ On a Prayer’-blasting Hank Hall, who is some sort of purgatory outlaw. There’s plenty more that can be mentioned, but the concept is outright nonsensical and absolutely does not match the universe in which Titans has been placed. The premise comes off as one that could better belong in Doom Patrol. Maybe that’s why it was so much more fun to experience, but in the context of Titans it is downright bewildering, even apart from the extremely contrived and illogical circumstances of absolutely everything that happens in the black-and-white place.

As mentioned, though, the episode is quite the dark horse, and the mini-adventure our three heroes go on throughout the episode was genuinely enjoyable and only partly because of its “so bad it’s good” quality. The three main characters, arguably all very much side characters in the world of the living, had the best chemistry and presence of any characters this season. Hank and Donna easily outdid their previous incantations and newcomer Jay Lycurgo’s Tim was stellar in the limelight this episode. Alan Ritchson’s Hank, alone and sans obligatory Dawn, was the charming and entertaining character he always had the potential to be. Even Conor Leslie’s Donna, who previously always felt flat, had substantially more color (ironically) to her personality and presence and was much more compelling than the character who died last season. The dynamic between the three was solid and the episode brought some humor to the land of death. Donna’s acknowledgment and resentment of dying at a carnival was appreciated dark humor and even a recognition of where at least one creative choice Titans made went wrong.

Out in the colorful regular world, Rachel Roth is living with the Amazonians in Themyscira, wanting to bring Donna back to life. The idea that Rachel was able to simply decide to go to Themyscira and then live and train there as one of them is ridiculous. That aside, the character was both still annoyingly juvenile in blatantly disrespectful of the Amazonian culture at every possible moment, but seemed to have some sort of growth when she was, essentially, put in time out. Hopefully, her time here off-screen will be used as an excuse for her having better control of her powers going forward and make her less of a constant liability to the Titans. She did provide a lovely admission that the Titans never actually did much work when she was with them.

While, as depicted, Donna and Tim seem to be able to simply will themselves back to life, it’s unclear if there is more behind their ability to do so. Hank didn’t make it over the bridge, however, one has to wonder what body he would have woken up as he previously exploded. Hank not returning made the most sense and at least gave some additional finality to that emotional arc, including a sweet reunion with his brother. Bringing any character back to life, especially so soon after their death, cheapens and lowers too many stakes, but Donna’s revival was entirely foreshadowed and Tim was too new and clearly significant to actually be removed from the story.

Donna’s first course of business upon being reanimated after months was, for some completely unknown and likely absurd reason, to rescue Bruce Wayne from suicide by fire. Yes, Bruce has returned to the screen, and apparently, he is still generally deranged. He dramatically finalized a last will and testament and then set his castle on fire with him in it. At this point, the question still remains why Titans has such a Bruce Wayne complex and why we need to keep caring considering we have been told or shown time and time and time and time again that he is terrible.

Episode 9 still deserves a toast—despite being dealt a hand that should never be able to win, it managed to make the most of it. The premise and context of it all made less than zero sense and had no place in the currently established Titans universe, its story devices were lazy and corny, but it entertained like no other. So, here’s to this episode—and the viewer—having some fun.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Netflix’s THREE-BODY PROBLEM Looking to Fill Out its Cast

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix’s THREE-BODY PROBLEM Looking to Fill Out its Cast

Last September, it was announced that Game of Thrones showrunners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, were developing an adaption of The Three-Body Problem for Netflix. The adaption was the first project announced by the duo under their new overall mega deal with Netflix. Since the news first hit, details regarding the series adaption have been rather sparse. We know that Derek Tsang (Better Days) will direct the drama, and actress Eiza Gonzalez will lead the series. Details beyond those, though, have been slim… until today.

    • We here at Murphy’s Multiverse have a small bit of news we can share, though, with fans of Liu Cixin’s sci-fi book trilogy The Three-Body Problem. The Netflix series is currently looking to cast to cast unspecified roles.
    • The first role calls for a Female Lead between the ages of 25-35. This actor will need to be of Chinese heritage, a scientist and a fluent English speaker. It’s a lead role with options. Should the series stay close to the book and, assuming Eiza isn’t portraying a different version of the character, this could perhaps be for the role of Ye Wenjie. (This, of course, is merely a guess!)
    • The second role calls for a Female Lead between the ages of 70-85. This actor will need to be of Chinese heritage, a scientist and a fluent English speaker. This is also for a lead role with options.
    • The third role is for a Female Lead between the ages of 25-35. The actor will need to be of Hispanic/Latino heritage and speak English fluently. The character is described as a scientist and the role is a lead role with options.
    • The fourth role is for Male Lead between the ages of 25-35. The actor will need to be of Indian/South Asian heritage and British. The character is said to be powerful, charismatic and clever. This is for a lead role with options.
    • The fifth role is for a Male Lead between the ages of 25-35. The casting grid calls specifically for a Black actor. The character is described as a scientist, who isn’t necessarily a nerd, who is smart and laid back. He’s also said to have leading man charisma, who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances.
    • The final two roles being cast are for Male Leads, both between the ages of 50-70. These are only described as Military/Ex- Military.

The Three-Body Problem is based on the book series by . The series includes Remembrance of Earth’s Past, The Dark Forest and Death’s End.

Production on The Three-Body Problem is expected to kick off in November in the UK.
