  • Joshua Collins Cast in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’

Joshua Collins Cast in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’

Details about Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania are still scarce ahead of its February 17, 2023 release date. Filming began in early 2021 and is expected to continue into 2022, but we may have learned another kernel of information about the cast.

According to his Spotlight profile, actor Joshua Collins is set to play a character named “Derrick” in the film. Collins is a British-American actor known for roles in movies What’s Love Got To Do With It (2021) and Against the Law (2016) among others.

Collins’ role as Derrick is presumably small, but time with tell how he will stack up next to Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, and Johnathon Majors whose Kang the Conquerer is set to make his film debut in Quantumania.

  • Netflix Announces ‘Tiger King 2’ With a 2021 Release

Netflix Announces ‘Tiger King 2’ With a 2021 Release

It looks like the world hasn’t had enough of Tiger King, as Netflix has announced that sequel to the original 2020 documentary. The real-life story of a man known as Joe Exotic and the bizarre happenings surrounding his time as the owner of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park (or G.W. Zoo for short). The documentary is eyeing a late 2021 release. The announcement was hidden in the video teasing Netflix as the “Home of True Crime.” There are no details where the focus will be on the upcoming continuation. It’ll likely continue exploring the original story and expanding what has happened since its initial release. Teaser footage already is hinting at some more insanity.

The upcoming continuation will kick off their new slate of real-life documentaries that include The Puppet Master, Hunting the Ultimate Conman, The Tinder Swindler, Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King, and Bad Vegan. Netflix has made a name for itself by exploring darker topics through a variety of documentaries. It’s great to see them continue building upon their success, but it does open up the question of a sequel to Tiger King was truly needed.

It was released just around the time the pandemic started, which gave it quite the boost in viewership yet the insanity also led to some real-world consequences. It makes you wonder what else they could explore within that story, as it would imply some more details have found their way into the world. We’ll get a clearer picture once the first full trailer for the sequel gets released.

  • REVIEW: ‘Doom Patrol’ Season 3 Episodes 1-3

REVIEW: ‘Doom Patrol’ Season 3 Episodes 1-3

The premiere of Season 3 of Doom Patrol picks up right after the cliffhanger that was the pandemic-induced Season 2 finale. While all still seems lost for the briefest moment, Dorothy quickly regains control of the Candlemaker by putting it in a sort of timeout “as long as it takes for us to be friends again.” It’s a quirky, maybe sweet, way to look at the relationship between the apocalypse and a hundred-year-old “little girl,” but the episode makes quick work of that entire arc. It feels too easy after all this time, but the series was probably just ready to move on. With Niles apparently dead, the characters and the viewers are also supposed to move on, but the next couple of episodes promise that he will continue to linger around for a bit.

If Episode 1 does anything, it really goes character by character to remind us of where exactly they were literally and mentally the last time we saw them and sturdily place them on a new track. There’s definitely a lot going on, but arguably it’s a reflection of all the stuff going through the characters’ heads in light of their complex and contradictory feelings about the Chief’s death. Cliff is still resentful that his metal body is pretty terrible, but now his human brain seems to be letting him down, possibly with Parkinson’s. The Negative Spirit is taking Larry to space (for a very brief moment). Vic is dealing with the aftermath of his relationship with Roni, making it worse for himself by letting her get away with another crime. But Jane and Rita really do the most work.

Jane’s story picks up in the Well right where we left her last season. She rescues Harry the stuffed lamb and her and the other personalities band together to take on “Miranda,” aka the manifestation of Kay’s psychological trauma, to make it to the surface the very moment “Miranda” steps off the real-world table to hang herself (themselves?). It’s an intense, but short, moment—it definitely sets the stage for Jane to change in some way having been affected by all of that journey built by Season 2. Her relationship with Kay is clearly different, and she seems much more tuned in to Kay than she ever was before. These first few episodes make it clear that Kay is starting to grow and is even trying to take care of Jane, rather than the other way around. The series’ ability to keep Jane’s narrative so high quality and long-running is insane. The very literal depiction of trauma manifesting in someone is pretty stunning. Even though they make Jane/Kay’s mind so supernatural, it honestly might be the most real and grounded part of the series if you cut back on taking it literally.

Rita’s moments are less dramatic but certainly the most integral to the burgeoning plot. The episode makes an effort to tell us that the characters have a very messy grieving period to mush through with Niles’ death, but Rita represents this the most. As she tells Larry, “our relationship to the Chief was complex, I wouldn’t expect our reaction to his death to be anything but.” Coupled with her breakdown at community theatre rehearsal, she truly portrays this aspect the best by far. She discovers that Niles left her a key to a “secret”, which turns out to be an alarm for some sort of danger. Rita outright ignores the call to heroism, and her journey there is put in focus and set up for future episodes. Her general identity crisis that follows literally leaves her as a puddle that has to be carried around in a sack.

The alarm turns out to be a woman who does not reveal anything about herself arriving in some time travel/underground drill machine. While it’s only practical to assume that she will be a significant villain called Madame Rouge, here she’s incredibly goofy, but her demeanor is just serious enough that she keeps some facets of threatening. The fact that she shape-shifts sets up countless potential snags for our heroes and may curiously tie into Rita’s own abilities.

Episode 2 sees the group take an uncomfortable vacation to a ghost town of a resort. The Brotherhood of Evil, along with the Brain and Monsieur Mallah, is briefly introduced, and we mostly get acquainted with Garguax, who was hired by the Brotherhood to assassinate a target that looks like Rita. After decades of no luck, he gives up and lives in peace at the same resort. When he and our main characters come face to face, the awkward banquet hall scene is both hilarious and meaningful concerning how the group talks to Garguax as well as how they talk amongst and about themselves. Vic is dead set on taking on obvious supervillains, while the rest of the group is adamant that they are not a super team.

While Episode 2 was great in a very laid-back and comforting way, it also ended with them all being killed by Garguax’s still-eager henchman. Episode 3 is an absolute delight with the group navigating the afterlife. While Cliff, Vic, and Jane/Kay all visit family members, Rita is somehow still conscious and instead visits her ongoing self-identity problem once more: “He [Niles] literally handed me my destiny and I went on vacation.” The main players in the episode, though, are the Dead Boy Detectives who agree to help Dorothy and Larry bring back the rest of the team before they are truly, fully dead. Charles and Edwin, played by Sebastian Croft and Ty Tennant respectively, are delightful. After watching Episode 3, it is not all that surprising that ‘Dead Boy Detectives’ got an HBO Max pilot order. Add them to Larry’s mental breakdown and you’ve got a solid concoction.

Overall, one of the biggest concerns is how separate the heroes’ plot lines seem to have gotten last season Episodes 1 through 3 fluctuate on that. Doom Patrol generally does best when the characters are all very scrubbed together on shared absurd terrain. Episode 1 still felt too separated, but Episodes 2 and 3 represent the series’ skill at creating isolated adventures within kooky and fun newly-built worlds. It’s reminiscent of earlier Season 1 Doom Patrol where the group is placed in random situations with each other non-stop while the details of the story are driven by their own actions and personalities in contrast to the wild components happening around them. The first three episodes of the series are certainly promising for a fulfilling third season. Seeing where Madame Rouge and the Brotherhood of Evil take the villainous element from here will be integral, but the opening of Season 3 suggests that our team still has the knack for its classic, dark, absurd, and hysterical exploits.

  • RUMOR: Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Casting Hints at an Early Introduction of Garp

RUMOR: Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Casting Hints at an Early Introduction of Garp

Netflix entered the dangerous game of live-action adaptations of classic anime properties. Some time ago, we got our first look at Cowboy Bebop, and next, they are preparing to enter production on One Piece. We got a live-action logo with the first script teasing the series’ next step of production, but we’re still awaiting some kind of hint at their upcoming casting. Earlier rumors did hint that Ludi Lin is currently being eyed for the role of Roronoa Zoro, and it looks like they’re adding to the cast.

The first character descriptions hinted at Luffy gathering the various members of his Straw Hat pirate crew throughout the East Blue. And now it seems two more character descriptions have found their way online. Twitter user @OP_Netflix_Fan shared that Steven Maeda and his team are casting two additional series regulars, Garp and Koby. Their addition as regulars is quite a curious addition, which might hint at how the show will integrate later storylines early on.

Koby’s casting was inevitable due to his role in the earlier parts of the East Blue. Luffy stumbles upon him as he got forced to work for the pirate captain Alvida and he has an integral part in Zoro’s brief arc. The casting description highlights that he’ll learn “to stand up for others” throughout the season. Garp’s inclusion is the biggest surprise, as he didn’t have a role until the Post-Enies Lobby Arc in the story. Well, only if you don’t consider the Cover Stories.

Garp’s first introduction is during Chapter 92’s cover story, which is around the time Luffy fought the Arlong Pirates. It’s the ninth entry in the “Diary of Koby-Meppo” cover story, where we follow Koby and Helmeppo’s training to become cadets. As such, it seems like these cover stories will likely be showcased much earlier in the story as we follow both Luffy and Koby’s journey. It’s uncertain if Garp will also get included in the first episode titled “Romance Dawn,” as they’ll connect the dots much earlier in the story instead of having sudden reveals like in the manga. It’s an exciting prospect and we’ll hopefully get some official news in the coming weeks.

  • ‘Loki’s Natalie Holt to Compose HBO Max’s ‘Batgirl’

‘Loki’s Natalie Holt to Compose HBO Max’s ‘Batgirl’

It looks like Loki‘s Natalie Holt has already found her next project. The composer took to Twitter to announce that she’ll be working on the upcoming HBO Max film Batgirl. Last we heard of the project, they were preparing to film in Glasgow and it seems that production is picking up the pace if they already added their composer. The unique soundtrack of the Disney+ series was a standout and makes her addition an exciting prospect on what direction they might take.

Details are still kept under wraps on the upcoming film. Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah offered a brief update that Christina Hodson‘s script has been finished before they started scouting Glasgow. The only confirmed casting is Leslie Grace, who will take on the mantle of Batgirl and her alter-ego Barbara Gordon. It’s uncertain if they’ll stick to her origins as a fan of Batman who took on the mantle on her terms, or she might even be trained by whatever version of the Dark Knight they determine to include.

Holt has built up quite the reputation in the industry with her work on Paddington, Deadwater Fell, and BBC’s Wallander. She’s even played the closing ceremony of the Olympic games, as she’s an accomplished violinist. It’s exciting to see her join another comic book adaptation to lend her unique voice to the industry. We cannot wait to listen to what she has planned for her Batgirl soundtrack.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’ 2022 Delay Confirmed

    ‘Ms. Marvel’ 2022 Delay Confirmed

When Marvel Studios announced all the Disney+ series airing in 2021, it seemed like quite the line-up, as we got trailers for WandaVision, Loki, and even a Ms. Marvel sizzle reel. As a result of delays, we had four films and six entire Disney+ series heading our way throughout the year. That doesn’t include the recently announced Hit-Monkey series and MODOK on Hulu. It’s been a busy year and with the lack of announcements surrounding Ms. Marvel, it hinted that she may get a later release. After a long wait, we finally got a confirmation that it’s indeed delayed until 2022.

Variety’s Adam B. Vary confirmed in a recent showcase of Marvel Studios’ upcoming releases that the series indeed got delayed. While no official release date got included, there have been rumors hinting at a potential February release. The timing would give the Disney+ series The Book of Boba Fett time to release its episodes and get the focus into the new year.

    https://twitter.com/adambvary/status/1440844586016927744

We know that her character will make her return in The Marvels, which will premiere in November. So, they might’ve decided to postpone its release to consider her return in the same year and continue work on the effects-heavy show. Hawkeye seems to rely on more practical effects, and they’ll require some work to get Ms. Marvel’s embiggening powers right. We only know she’ll gain additional abilities, which have yet to get confirmed outside of merchandise. Here’s hoping that Disney+ Day offers a look and timing for her debut.

  • Chloe Bennet Denies Involvement in ‘Secret Invasion’

Chloe Bennet Denies Involvement in ‘Secret Invasion’

Add Chloe Bennet to the long list of actors and actresses who have denied their rumored involvement in Marvel Studios’ projects over the years. Bennett took to social media, seemingly unprompted, to let her fans know that despite their deepest desires, she would not be returning to the role of Daisy Johnson, aka, Quake, in the Disney Plus streaming series Secret Invasion.

    https://twitter.com/dailybennet/status/1440862840814858243?s=19

Bennet rose to fame in the role over seven seasons of ABC’s non-canonical series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and fans have been pining to see her character cross over into the MCU. Bennet joins the ranks of actors and actresses such as Tatiana Maslany, Paul Rudd, Andrew Garfield, Charlie Cox and Allison Brie in denying their involvement in MCU projects; ironically, while fans are often willing to take most of these actors at their word despite evidence to the contrary, it seems that, in this case, fans are going to Fox Mulder route and choosing to want to believe rather than take Bennet’s word for it.

While Secret Invasion is going to go heavy on the espionage-both Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke are playing spies and there are at least 3 other big spy roles in the series-at this point it looks Quake won’t be joining the party. Fortunately fans who want to see more of Bennet in the role can always head to Netflix to rewatch the series.

Marvel Studios Secret Invasion will start production soon and is expected to stream on Disney Plus in the Fall of 2022.

  • ‘Peacemaker’ Will Feature Dance Number Opening Credits

‘Peacemaker’ Will Feature Dance Number Opening Credits

The Suicide Squad was quite the hit with fans and critics alike, with many praising Gunns writing and character work. With so many memorable moments and characters, fans are eager to get more of the newest characters within the DCEU. Well, many fans will get their wish, just not as they expect. Peacemaker is the first spinoff series for the DCEU, centering around John Cenas Christopher Smith, a character whose quest for peace will continue on in an eight-episode-long first season.

Virtually nothing is known about the first season of Peacemaker, aside from that he’s gotta save the world, alongside John Economos and Emilia Harcourt. The cast and crew recently made an appearance at the Television Critics Association. The panel showcased some of the series first footage along with the opening credits, which definitely aren’t what many expected them to be. Each episode of Peacemaker will open with a Dance Number for the opening sequence, a sequence that act actor Robert Patrick reportedly had the most fun with.

    https://twitter.com/megsokay/status/1440747538781401095?s=20

While this seems a bit unorthodox for the genre, it’s certainly something out of the left field for Gunn to pull. This will definitely set the tone for what how you can expect the season to go, especially with such an eccentric patriot like Peacemaker, and let’s hope he works better with this team than the last one.

All eight episodes of Peacemaker were written by James Gunn, who directed five of the episodes. Gunn will serve as an executive producer on the series alongside both John Cena and Peter Safran.

  • R-Rated ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Was Considered At One Point

R-Rated ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Was Considered At One Point

There has been much debate on the Venom franchise’s choice on a PG-13 rating. In the first film, the character chews off someone’s head and is no stranger to darker stories. Yet, they still went with the audience rating that draws in the most viewers. It wasn’t a surprise that the sequel would share the same rating, but it looks like it was on the table at some point in development for Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Mit Carnage, aber ohne Gemetzel: "Venom 2" wird wirklich kein Superhelden-Blutbad - Kino News - FILMSTARTS.de

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Tom Hardy does confirm they’ve explored the potential of an R-rating. Yet, it seems they wanted to not limit their choices based on the comics, but rather focus strongly on what was right for the film’s overall tone.

100% we considered it. With all of these symbiotes, you know, you consider it. You read the comic books and it is extreme, but that’s not what we’re here to do. We came here to make a movie which, and correct me if I’m wrong, I mean, there’s a law and a rule into creating a movie that’s accessible to a lot of people, as well as that caters for everybody, including the hardcore fans.

    Tom Hardy

He does go on to say that they wanted to stay true to Carnage as much as possible, highlighting the scene where he stuffs his tongue down one person’s throat.

So I hope the hardcore fans at least take home that they look at Carnage and go, ‘Yeah, I recognize Carnage from the comic books. I’m happy with that.’ And yeah, no, we didn’t bite everybody’s head off, but we did stick a tongue down someone’s throat pretty… and managed to come in at a level of rating which is reputable so that grandma can come but also I’ll come watch it too.

    Tom Hardy

The comment of wanting to watch a film titled Venom with grandma is quite a funny idea. Mine would already hit her limit with the whole gooey alien monster that takes over human bodies to kill strangers. Still, it’s great they are putting the film’s overall theme first instead of forcing a rating in. Director Andy Serkis does tease they also want to leave some moments to the viewer’s imagination. Logan and Deadpool proved the potential of an r-rated project, but not every director will feel comfortable with it. So, here’s hoping that Carnage remains true to his name throughout the film.

  • ‘The Mandalorian’s Ludwig Göransson to Compose ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ Spinoff

‘The Mandalorian’s Ludwig Göransson to Compose ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ Spinoff

We’re still anxiously waiting for any update on the upcoming The Mandalorian spinoff, The Book of Boba Fett. We haven’t seen any footage and it’s still set to premiere in December. We’ll likely get our first look next month or the latest during Disney+ Day, as they’re teasing a special on the popular bounty hunter. To tie us over until then, Film Music Reporter has unveiled that Ludwig Göransson will continue his work in the Star Wars universe, as he’ll also compose the upcoming spinoff series.

They also report that scoring sessions have already started in recent weeks, which hopefully means we get a tease in the upcoming trailer. Göransson did offer our first glimpse into the music for the spinoff series when it got revealed during the second season’s post-credit sequence. So, he’ll likely also continue the musical composition he’s built around the world of The Mandalorian, as he also worked on the same season the character made its grand return.
