REVIEW: ‘Doom Patrol’ Remains Consistently Zany in Season 3

Doom Patrol manages to be one of the most unique and eccentric comic book television series around. More impressively, it manages to somehow be the least and most grounded series given its ability to present constant off-the-wall supernatural stories, as well as give its characters meaningful and intimate development. Season 3 stays the course and promises to keep the series’ signature zany spirit and hard spotlight on the characters’ continuing inner journeys.

When is Doom Patrol Season 3 dropping on HBO Max, and what's it all about? - Android Authority

What Season 3 of Doom Patrol might not offer – based on the first half of the season – is something sensationally different than what we’ve seen before. To be fair, how “different” can a show that embodies outlandishness actually end up being by the previous seasons? The answer might lie with the hidden foundational and conventional aspects of the show – the series is noticeably short of strong adversarial characters. Season 1’s Mr. Nobody is still the show’s gold standard, and no character or entity has risen to that villainous level since.

The fairly sporadic consistency and intensity of Doom Patrol’s villains tend to make the show feel like it hasn’t moved much over the course of multiple seasons. If the first five episodes of Season 3 are representative of the rest, the main team’s status as decidedly not the “Doom Patrol” may not be adjusted. But there are plenty of kernels of heroic ambitions, curiosities, and what it means to be a hero to think that this gaggle of superhumans could, eventually, be a super team. These bits and scraps have existed all along, though, but maybe two to three years in the title of the series could have a more direct meaning.

Doom Patrol's trippy Season 3 teaser at HBO Max

Some of the overarching plotlines from the first two seasons that felt weighty and more of a burden are mostly alleviated, though what haunted the team from the very beginning seems unwilling to let go. Perhaps that very haunting is the glue they need right now. Season 3 is a masterclass in forming individual unique episodes with absolutely and delightfully absurd micro-stories. This time around, the miniature adventures, while still feeling thematically removed from one another, fit better as puzzle pieces to the overall picture that is slowly coming to life. Episodes 2, 3, and 4 in particular are absolute gems as individual episodes a well as chapters of the same short story, and they are fun beyond expectation.

In any event, Doom Patrol is still doing what it arguably and sometimes surprisingly does best – its characters. Diane Guerrero is still an absolute powerhouse as “Crazy Jane” and while much of her story seemed to be tying itself to a close at the end of Season 2, the series’ most intricate and interesting character has plenty of additional journeys up her sleeve. Matt Bomer as Larry promises to keep being an anchor of tragedy and charm, but the character that truly steps into the spotlight this season is April Bowlby’s Rita. If any character has the ability to move the group—and plot—forward in a major way it surprisingly seems to be her.

Overall, Season 3 certainly understands its own assignment and admirably seems to refuse to sacrifice its bizarre and wonderfully unconventional style for anything else. Doom Patrol certainly has the ability to do so while simultaneously nailing the quality and depth of its characters’ stories. So, it undoubtedly has the potential to hit even more notes under the ever-present and ironic “Doom Patrol” label. Whether this season will see the group wind up in virtually the same enjoyable place they’ve been in since the beginning of the series or charge into genuinely new territory is still on the horizon yet to be seen.

  • ‘SHANG-CHI’s Ten Rings Almost Looked Like They Did in the Comics

‘SHANG-CHI’s Ten Rings Almost Looked Like They Did in the Comics

Audiences have been praising Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for the way it smoothly translates complicated comic ideas to the big screen. Among these adapted concepts was the function of the titular Ten Rings, which were simplified in the MCU for the sake of storytelling. However, Marvel VFX artist Sean Walker has revealed that this almost wasn’t the case. He explained in an interview with Comic Book:

The Ten Rings actually went through a range of color changes. At one point, each individual effect had its individual styled use of the Rings. For example, when Wenwu is creating a bustle out of them, or a whip, or projectiles, they actually had their own unique color scheme, they were all in a similar color palette.

    Sean Walker

In the comics, the rings did not function as a singular unit like they do in the film. Instead, each ring had its own unique power and color-coding that its wearer could use at will. Walker’s comments indicate that the MCU almost stayed true to this before slimming the idea down. He continued to reveal that the different colors were almost used as a way to convey the story’s themes in a visual manner:

But in order to really clearly define this is Wenwu and this is Shang-Chi, we stuck to a much narrower color palette. So Shang-Chi’s colors actually mimic his mum’s color palette, so we looked to her for her greens and for yellows and greens. Especially in the initial fight between his parents.

    Sean Walker

As anyone who has seen the movie would know, this range of color was eventually trimmed to just solid blue and orange. While the original idea was a good one, it’s probably for the best that the VFX team chose to simplify their effects. The result is a simple and appealing vision for the film’s climactic battle, and the rings functioning as a unit proved beneficial for the project’s action choreography.

  • Marvel Comics Launching ‘SABRETOOTH’ Solo Series in January

Marvel Comics Launching ‘SABRETOOTH’ Solo Series in January

As mutants have thrived and expanded into the cosmos during the Krakoan Age, Victor Creed has sat in a deep, dark pit at the heart of the island as punishment for killing some humans WAAAAAY back in House of X #1. Next January, we’ll catch up with Creed’s time the hole and, presumably, his revenge on those that put him there in Sabretooth #1 by Victor LaValle.

After the issue was teased for January in yesterday’s December 2021 solicitations, LaValle took to Twitter to reveal that he was behind the book.

LaValle is best known for his short stories and has dabbled in comics before but Sabretooth represents his first work for Marvel. Back in March, LaValle announced that he had come to an agreement to work with Marvel on a book for the X-line, but until yesterday’s Twitter announcement, there had only been rumors about what he’d be writing.

It’s worth speculating that Victor Creed’s return to action will coincide with the events of Jonathan Hickman’s Inferno, which promises to bring the Age of Krakoa crumbling down, presumably at the hands of Mystique who was with Creed on his last mission and who has a promise to keep. We’ll likely see Mystique turn Creed loose on Krakoa and that sounds like something worth reading.

  • ‘SHANG-CHI’s Fala Chen’s Used as Reference for the Great Protector Dragon

‘SHANG-CHI’s Fala Chen’s Used as Reference for the Great Protector Dragon

There’s a lot to be excited about when a new Marvel Studios film hits theatres. Not only do we get a new entry in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, but get a new perspective on the world. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introduced us to the dimension of Ta Lo, which introduced the world to the MCU’s first dragon. The existence of the Great Protector left us with many questions and it seems that there’s one aspect of the character we may have not noticed.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, one of the Weta Digital VFX supervisors, Sean Walker, revealed that they wanted to tie the film together with Easter eggs inspired by its theme of family. One of those being that the Great Protector’s eyes are based on Fala Chen, who plays Shang-Chi’s mother, Jing Li. They also tease that there are many other details that keep the character alive throughout the film.

We kept looking at Shang’s mother for reference for almost everything. Even the Dragon’s eyes were initially based off by Fala Chen’s eyes, the actress who played Shang’s mom.

    Sean Walker

It’s a clever idea as his mother’s death plays an integral part in his journey, as it parallels that of Wenwu. His father’s grief lets him get manipulated by the Dweller in the Darkness while Shang-Chi works alongside the Great Protector. In a way, these two mystical creatures act as representations of what path they chose after her tragic death. It’s great to see how a simple Easter egg also can turn into a strong story-telling device similar to how Dormammu was played by Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange. It’ll be interesting to see what other hidden details are in the story.

  • ‘STARGIRL’ Season 3 Start Date Revealed

‘STARGIRL’ Season 3 Start Date Revealed

The sophomore season of Stargirl made its move to the CW following DC Universe’s transition from streaming service to a strictly digital library. Stargirl was one of the few originals that was picked up by a channel with Titans, Doom Patrol, and Young Justice becoming HBO Max exclusives. Before the second season of Stargirl even dropped, it was renewed early on for a third season at the CW. Now we have word on when it’s scheduled to begin production

Star Joy Osmanski has confirmed via an Instagram story that Season 3 is set to begin filming on October 4th. Both Osmanski and Neil Hopkins, who play Tigress and Sportsmaster respectively, were previously confirmed to be returning to the show as series regulars following their brief appearance in season two.

It’ll be interesting to see what the overarching plan for the series is as the third season was green-lit so quickly. The team is still reeling with the arrival of Eclipso whose recently made his escape from the black diamond by Shiv. This season has continued to improve upon its first and with the return of both Tigress and Sportsmaster, things can only get more intense.

Stargirl season 2 is currently airing on the CW network every Tuesday. The third season has yet to set a tentative release date but could release as early as late 2021.

  • ‘SHANG-CHI’ Concept Art Offers Closer Look at Abomination’s Redesign

‘SHANG-CHI’ Concept Art Offers Closer Look at Abomination’s Redesign

Shang-Chi surprised many when one of its trailers revealed the grand return of Abomination. While we knew he’ll make an appearance in She-Hulk, we only heard that Tim Roth will reprise the role. There was no mention if he’ll show up in his human form, or if he’ll look similar to what he did in 2018’s The Incredible Hulk. The trailer changed all that when we got a more comic-accurate design for the character. Many didn’t even believe it was the same character at first, but the film’s recently released revealed that it is indeed the transformed Blonsky.

The new design still kept elements from the original, and Marvel Studios Senior Visual Development Artist, Anthony Francisco, took to Instagram to share a closer look at the character’s new design. He did get the more comic-accurate ears and green skin. Yet, the concept art reveals he still retains the protruding bones from his first design. It’s somewhat difficult to make out in the film but we might get a closer look once the Disney+ series drops.

It’s a great design and Marvel Studios likely will utilize these assets in the Disney+ series with some minor tweaks here or there. We’ll see if they point out the new design in the series, as Mark Ruffalo‘s Bruce Banner might be surprised. It would be perfect if Blonsky fights back by pointing out that he looks different from their last encounter. Hopefully, the wait isn’t too long until we get our first look at the legal comedy and the wacky part of the MCU it’ll introduce us to.

  • Connecting Imaginary Dots: Shuma-Gorath May Appear in ‘SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME’

Connecting Imaginary Dots: Shuma-Gorath May Appear in ‘SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME’

Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next threat seems to be emerging from within the multiverse. The ending of WandaVision kicked off a new era that saw its expansion in Loki. While all eyes were on the newly introduced Kang, it seems the rumored foe of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might have an early appearance. In the first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, eagle-eyed fans may have spotted the first glimpse of Shuma-Gorath.

In the trailer, Doctor Strange creates a spell to wipe everyone’s memory of Peter Parker being Spider-Man. As it usually does, something goes wrong and it unleashes something from the multiverse. Eagle-eyed Twitter user @MSpector_JM noticed that in the rift you can spot a rather strange and familiar eyeball with what seems like tentacles. The design is very reminiscent of Shuma-Gorath and continues to tease his presence.

    https://twitter.com/mspector_jm/status/1438175666457890816?s=21

Rumors point to the multiversal being as the main threat in the upcoming sequel and it is after America Chavez’s abilities, who is confirmed to make her live-action debut in Multiverse of Madness. As such, Strange’s actions in No Way Home may break a hole in the newly established multiverse, which gives Shuma the power to finally find the source of power he requires to dominate every reality.

Yet, this brief tease may not be his actual debut within the MCU. Giant green tentacles can briefly be seen in the premiere episode of What If…?, as they try to break through a portal opened by Red Skull before being pushed back in by Captain Carter. He even has a showdown with a Variant of Doctor Strange in a later episode, where he fuses with him. As the show deals with the multiverse and the fact that tentacles are the only connective tissue besides the Watcher, it may be Shuma-Gorath.

Shuma Gorath is Reportedly After America Chavez in 'Doctor Strange' Sequel - MCUExchange

Marvel Studios is building up to his full debut in next year’s Doctor Strange sequel. The various teases and this small detail in the Spider-Man trailer could hint at a post-credit sequence involving Strange facing the creature. While the trailer implies it was Peter’s nerves unleashing the multiversal villains, there’s a chance that this small glimpse builds up to the first confrontation as we learn the true reason why the multiverse broke in the first place.

  • Denis Villeneuve May Criticize Marvel Filmmaking But is Excited About Chloé Zhao’s ‘ETERNALS’

Denis Villeneuve May Criticize Marvel Filmmaking But is Excited About Chloé Zhao’s ‘ETERNALS’

It’s nothing new that the popular franchise would draw in negative criticism, especially with directors that focus more on the auteur aspect of cinema. Marvel Studios’ approach has proven successful, but is naturally not without its faults, especially in the earlier days. In an interview with the magazine El Mundos, the following remark was translated by Dune‘s director Denis Villeneuve while promoting his next tentpole film.

There are too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a cut and paste of others.

    Denis Villeneuve

It’s certainly a harsh statement in regard to Marvel Studio’s approach to filmmaking. Still, it’s not the first time this kind of remark has found its way online. Curious enough, there have been some potentially misleading translations surrounding this quote as the context was left out. Michelle Jaworski, a reporter for the Daily Dot, pointed out that the translation may be quite different:

As long as you feel a personality in a project, that it is an artistic object and that there is a will at work, it is not a question of money. But how we approach the cinema. The problem today…Well, if we’re talking about Marvel, the thing is, all these films are made from the same mold. Some filmmakers can add a little color to it, but they’re all cast in the same factory. It doesn’t take anything away from the movies, but they are formatted.

    Denis Villeneuve

He then goes on to highlight that the Dune film is a personal one and how he tried to be more mainstream with his approach. The translation does offer a bit more context on it, as it’s less a downplay of Marvel’s films but rather that their approach generally sidelines the director. Ironically, there has been criticism on their Disney+ side where they supposedly take away roles from showrunners. The director has praised Chloé Zhao and even Marvel Studios for breaking their usual mold in an interview for Harper’s BAZAAR.

I’m your biggest fan. I think it’s genius that Marvel approached you because you’re the radical opposite of it aesthetically.

    Denis Villeneuve

As such, it’s less an attack directed at Marvel Studios but rather the current approach to filmmaking that resulted from their success. It’s also come to a point where “Marvel” has become a generalized term for any franchise-focused production by auteurs. He praises Marvel Studios for taking this step and it may be a sign of his hope for a change within the industry.

It’s not an easy discussion and there will be different views on the current state of cinema and Hollywood, especially if you consider the streaming debacle. Zhao‘s upcoming Eternals film is inspired and was pitched with Villeneuve‘s films as inspiration. So, perhaps it’ll echo in a revival of the auteur approach and they find a balance between these different approaches.

  • Sung Kang May Have Confirmed Inquisitor Rumors for ‘OBI-WAN KENOBI’

Sung Kang May Have Confirmed Inquisitor Rumors for ‘OBI-WAN KENOBI’

There has been a bit of a break for the Star Wars franchise since The Bad Batch ended. PlayStation did surprise us with the announcement of a PlayStation 5 exclusive remake for Knights of the Old Republic. On the Disney+ side of things, we only know that The Mandalorian spin-off The Book of Boba Fett releases in December, but it’s been mostly quiet on this front. Luckily, it seems actor Sung Kang may have confirmed a rumor surrounding his mysterious character in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Back in July, Cinelinx’s Jordan Maison hinted that the actor would play the Fifth Brother, who was an antagonist in the animated spin-off Star Wars Rebels. The character was voiced by Philip Anthony-Rodriguez and was hunting down remaining Jedi and Force-sensitive characters. While he did face a dark ending in that story, the Kenobi series takes place just as Darth Vader starts hunting down Jedi and turning some to the dark side and join his team of Inquisitors. So, we might see the early days of this character, as Kang confirmed in an interview with Screen Rant he’ll wield a lightsaber in the series.

There’s a chance he’ll fight alongside Obi-Wan to face the main challenge of this series. We know that Anakin will make his return. So, we could even witness the birth of the Inquisitors as the Fifth Brother gets pulled into the ranks. The Disney+ series will offer a glimpse into a mysterious era as the Empire establishes its ranks. So, we’ll probably learn more about the organization that would get taken down after the death of our titular hero kickstarted the adventure for a young Skywalker.

  • ‘SHAZAM: FURY OF THE GODS’ to Include the DC Fanfare After Missing in First Film

‘SHAZAM: FURY OF THE GODS’ to Include the DC Fanfare After Missing in First Film

After a long time, DC finally got its own fanfare that kicked off any of the latest films of the DC Extended Universe. It became an exciting staple for the brand and became an immediately recognizable sound that this was, indeed, a DC project. Yet, many were a bit confused when it ended up missing in the release of Shazam. Many were confused by this move and it looks like director David F. Sandberg is rectifying that with the upcoming release of the sequel Shazam: Rage of the Gods.

The director took to Instagram sharing a brief video teasing the iconic opening and confessing to the fact that he just forgot to include it in the first. He did jokingly tease that he has no idea if it might remain, as who knows if they might change the design by 2023. While he’s most likely joking, it’s not uncommon for redesigns to happen over time and even Marvel Studios changed their logo alongside the intro after some time.

The fanfare getting lost on the cutting room floor in the first film does show that sometimes productions can get quite crazy. They work on these films up until the last minute at times. Still, it’s great to use this mistake to advertise its inclusion in the sequel while also offering an update on the film’s production. We’ll see if it’ll stick around until its release.
