  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge Developing ‘Tomb Raider’ TV Series for Amazon

Phoebe Waller-Bridge Developing ‘Tomb Raider’ TV Series for Amazon

Tomb Raider is heading to the small screen. The Hollywood Reporter revealed on Friday that Phoebe Waller-Bridge is currently developing the project as part of her overall deal with Amazon. While the project is still very much being developed, it’s said that Waller-Bridge will pen the scripts. She is not expected to star in the series, though. Waller-Bridge will also executive produce the project along with the former head of comedy and drama, Ryan Andolina, and the former head of overall deals, Amanda Greenblatt

This will mark the latest attempt to bring Lara Croft to life in live-action. Angelina Jolie previously starred in two films as the archaeologist, while Alicia Vikander starred in a 2018 film that was originally set to receive a sequel. That project, which had Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green set to pen the script, was ultimately scrapped when MGM lost the film rights last year.

Fans of the series will not only be getting a new live-action take thanks to Amazon, but also a brand new video game installment. Back in December, it was revealed that Amazon Games would publish the next video game within the Tomb Raider franchise. As of now, that project does not have a release date.

  • Amazon Developing ‘Sex Criminals’ and ‘Bitch Planet’ for TV

Amazon Developing ‘Sex Criminals’ and ‘Bitch Planet’ for TV

Comic book writers Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick have signed a new overall deal with Amazon’s Prime Video. The news comes courtesy of Above the Line, with the outlet revealing that, as part of the deal, both Sex Criminals and Bitch Planet are being developed for television.

Sex Criminals, which is written by Fraction with artwork by Chip Zdarsky, was first published in September 2013. The series, which centers on Suzie and Jon, two characters who have the ability to stop time when they orgasm. After realizing that they both share the same ability, the two go on to use it to their advantage by robbing banks. The fan-favorite series concluded its run in October 2020.

Bitch Planet, which hails from DeConnick and artist Valentine De Landro, began its run in December 2014. The series, which currently consists of 10 issues, is said to be on hiatus, with its most recent issue having been released in 2017. The series is set in a dystopian future where non-compliant women are sent to an off-planet prison.

Both Sex Criminals and Bitch Planet are published by Image Comics.

With the deal said to still be ongoing, it’s likely it’ll be a bit before we hear any official news regarding either series. However, it’s safe to say the signing of both Fraction and DeConnick is a huge get for Prime Video which has found major success with The Boys and Invincible, two adult-centric comic book properties.

  • ‘Gen V:’ Michele Fazekas to Run Season 2 as Writers Room Opens

‘Gen V:’ Michele Fazekas to Run Season 2 as Writers Room Opens

The Boys spinoff, Gen V, has yet to premiere its first season, but that isn’t stopping Prime Video from looking ahead to Season 2. Deadline reports that, while an official season two has not been ordered, a writers’ room is being set up for a second season. The outlet has also reported that Michele Fazekas (Agent Carter) will lead the room and serve as the sole showrunner for Season 2.

Fazekas served as a co-showrunner alongside frequent collaborator, Tara Butters (Agent Carter), however, Butters will not be returning for Season 2. The decision not to return seems to be on Butters’ end, as the producer has some personal matters to tend to. Deadline reports that Butters is hoping to return to writing and producing down the line.

Gen V, a spinoff from The Boys, will focus on America’s only college exclusively for young adult superheroes that just so happens to be run by Vought International. The project stars Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Shelley Conn, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sean Patrick Thomas, and Marco Pigossi.

Gen V, of course, had a bumpy production during its first season. The series saw numerous recastings and changes in showrunners. However, it seems Prime Video is high on the series, which will finally debut sometime this year.

  • REPORT: ‘Wednesday’ Season 2 May Not Stream on Netflix

REPORT: ‘Wednesday’ Season 2 May Not Stream on Netflix

We just heard recently that Wednesday is very likely to get a season renewal in the near year, as the series ended up becoming one of Netflix’s biggest hits with 400 million hours viewed in a week, even beating out Stranger Things. There was only one complication: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) owns the rights and was a co-producer on the series. Now that the studio is owned by amazon, there was some uncertainty if the Jenna Ortega-led project may move away from its streaming home; especially with its recent success.

In a new report by the Independent, it seems that the new MGM series may be moving to Prime Video rather than remaining on Netflix going into its second season. They do point out that this isn’t a sure thing and there’s a chance that Netflix won’t waste this opportunity to keep the popular series on its streaming platform, but it’s most definitely an option as of now.

Amazon has made the statement in the past that they aren’t going to force every project that was produced under the MGM banner to remain exclusively on Prime Video, but it doesn’t exclude the fact that they’ll completely rule out the idea. According to the Independent, the team behind Wednesday is already securing writers and looking into filming locations for a second season, which is at least a positive hint at more to come. For now, we just have to wait a little longer for any confirmation if the series will return to Netflix or not.

  • Amazon Snags Henry Cavill to Lead ‘Warhammer 40,000’

Amazon Snags Henry Cavill to Lead ‘Warhammer 40,000’

Henry Cavill‘s post-Superman/post-Watcher career has already begun being defined. According to THR, Cavill is set to star and produce an adaptation of Warhammer 40,000 for Amazon.

Warhammer 40,000 is a widely popular tabletop war game set 40,000 years into a pretty crazy future where humanity finds itself at war with aliens and mutants across the universe. Cavill has made it known in the past that he loves the game and has teased fans about his potential involvement, including recently in an interview with The Nerdist where he declared his favorite army and later name-dropped a character from the game that fans have been hoping he’d play: The Emperor of Mankind.

As THR points out, the deal has not been sealed quite yet, though the potential for Warhammer 40,000 to become a multi-season sci-fi series is a strong selling point for Amazon.

  • Nikyatu Jusu Set to Direct ‘Night of the Living Dead’ Sequel for MGM

Nikyatu Jusu Set to Direct ‘Night of the Living Dead’ Sequel for MGM

Night of the Living Dead is back and it looks like MGM is already set to return to the iconic zombie franchise. Nanny‘s Nikyatu Jusu is already attached to direct the film for Village Roadshow Pictures, Westbrook, Origin Story, Vertigo Entertainment, and Sanibel Films. It seems the deal was grown out of a “highly competitive situation.” The film will be based on a script by LaToya Morgan, who is no stranger to zombies given her time on The Walking Dead. MGM is setting it for a theatrical run.

George A. Romero‘s original adaptation Night of the Living Dead back in 1968 was technically the film that defined the genre and went on to spawn sequels, reboots and countless others trying to capitalize on the “Living Dead” genre. To this day, Night of the Living Dead already has five sequels directed by Romero and it’s uncertain if this one will continue where the last entry left off. It’s plot is under wraps and it’s only titled as a sequel and not a reboot.

Jusu has made quite the splash with her work on Nanny, which was the first horror film to win the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, which also made her only the second Black female director to receive the reward. So, it’s no surprise that Amazon wasn’t going to waste any time to get her attached to a new project, especially one with such a legacy behind it. It’ll be interesting to see if they try to stick to what makes this genre iconic or rather try to twist the genre on its head with a new look t a zombie-infested world.

  • Amazon to Adapt Sega Gaming Franchise ‘ToeJam & Earl’ as a Film

Amazon to Adapt Sega Gaming Franchise ‘ToeJam & Earl’ as a Film

You read that right, ToeJam and Earl are back baby. It seems that Amazon Studios has already set its eyes on the iconic SEGA franchise from the 90s as a feature film. Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media and Story Kitchen are currently attached to bring the film to life about alien rappers that are looking for a cure. No, not a cure for the usual disease but one that destroys their home planet’s rhythm, funk, and groove. The following description has been shared for the film:

Earth, their legends tell them, is the Paradise where the music that created their culture originated. Unfortunately for our heroes, not only do they wreck their ship, but they find that Earth is . . . well, not the haven they expected. But the music – that part was true. So begins their quest to find as much of that music as they can in the hope of saving their planet, and maybe ours as well.

Amos Vernon and Nunzio Randazoo, who recently penned Hotel Transylvania 4 and Disney+’s Superfudge, are set to write the film’s script with Story Kitchen’s Dmitri M. Johnsona nd Dan Jevons set to produe the project. They are joined by Curry, Erick Peyton, and Mike Goldberg. It’s unclear if this film will be an animated film or a live-action/animation hybrid given ToeJam and Earl’s very alien design from the original gaming trilogy. Whatever tehy have planned, it’s definitely crazy to think we live in a time where ToeJam and Earl will be a film to begin with.

  • Netflix Loses ‘Midnight Mass’ Creators to Amazon

Netflix Loses ‘Midnight Mass’ Creators to Amazon

Now this is quite the development, as after having worked on a multitude of Netflix original projects, Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy have moved on and signed an exclusive multiyear deal with Amazon Studios. They worked on popular horror projects like The Haunting of Hill House or Midnight Mass.

The exclusivity deal means that future projects they work on under their Intrepid Pictures banner will stream on Prime Video’s 240 countries. Head of Global Television, Vernon Sanders, has shared some words on the exclusivity deal.

Mike and Trevor are remarkable at telling immersive, suspenseful stories that masterfully keep audiences engaged from start to finish. We are excited to welcome them to Amazon Studios and are looking forward to our global customers experiencing their genre-bending creativity.

    Vernon Sanders

Flanagan and Macy also have shared their excitement of joining the studio’s future ventures.

Amazon is a studio that we have long admired. Their commitment to engaging in groundbreaking series and content aligns with the ethos of what we have built at Intrepid. We are looking forward to working with the entire Amazon team as we bring our brand of genre productions to the service and audiences around the globe.

    Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy

There’s no word on what exactly their next project might be. Intrepid last worked on The Midnight Club for Netflix and still is working on The Fall of the House of Usher for next year. Yet, it seems like future horror ventures from the duo will move away from their usual home and it does wonder if they’ll do something unique to make their new home stand out from previous ventures.

  • ‘The Boys’ Casts Rosemarie DeWitt as Hughie’s Mom, Simon Pegg to Return

‘The Boys’ Casts Rosemarie DeWitt as Hughie’s Mom, Simon Pegg to Return

The Boys remains one of Amazon’s biggest shows and remains as the big counter offering for those that have reached a certain limit with current superhero fare. While it revels in the mockery of DC and Marvel’s ongoing history alongside an unsubtle political mockery, the show also has a lot of heart with its many characters trying to just survive in a confusing world. Back in August, many were excited when the show announced that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is set to join the cast in an unknown role for Season 4. That wasn’t all, as we now have even more casting news.

The biggest reveal is that Rosemarie DeWitt will be playing the mother of Jack Quaid‘s Hughie. Simon Pegg is also set to return to reprise the role of his dad, which was a fun in-joke given that Hughie in the original The Boys comics looked quite a bit like the famous Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz actor. They’ve also added Elliot Knight and Rob Benedict in unknown roles, but there’s always a good chance they are some of the new superheroes joining the fray of Eric Kripke‘s superhero satire.

It’ll be exciting to see what the new season has to offer, especially after everything that unraveled with Soldier Boy. Jensen Ackles was a fan-favorite last season and the series will definitely continue on that with this season. DeWiitt‘s addition as Hughie’s mother opens some interesting storytelling potential and perhaps we get to spend more time with the character.
