  • ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Confirms Data Leak With Kate Bishop Reveal

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Confirms Data Leak With Kate Bishop Reveal

It’s only a few more days until Marvel’s Avengers officially releases. To kickstart their game, Crystal Dynamics has just released a brand new War Table. They promised it would offer us our first look at the post-launch content. There have been plenty of leaks and rumors about what we can expect. So, let’s talk about the major reveals of what the future holds for the Avengers Initiative.

The video started with a heartfelt tribute to Chadwick Boseman before revealing that they have changed a few aspects due to the recent events. It did end with the tease of Black Panther’s logo in tribute to the fallen King.

    Eg2Iur7VgAIsQbc

There were a few additional reveals for the game, which you can check out here:

    • Villain Sectors will feature iconic villain showdowns, they teased additional fights with Taskmaster and Abomination.
    • Secret S.H.I.E.L.D. vaults can be found throughout the game similar to the Beta.
    • A new villain group was finally confirmed besides A.I.M. The game will also include the Watchdogs. They are an anti-Inhuman terrorist group from the comics.
    • Events have been confirmed for the game (weekly or seasonal) that will include exclusive items or skins.
    • They are adding a new outpost for S.H.I.E.L.D. post-launch.
    • Mega Hives and a secret A.I.M. lab have been revealed as additional enemy gauntlets.

Alongside this came the confirmation that Kate Bishop will be the first playable addition to the roster. This also confirms the leak we saw from the Beta a month ago. Her story will continue where the main storyline ended. Also, they teased that it will also introduce a new villain into the game as well. These types of story expansions will be titled operations and are connected to the new outpost.

That was quite a lot to unpack there but it all sounds exciting. Also, the next War Table will also reveal something I have been asking for since the Beta, a content road map. They confirmed that Kate Bishop will be the first additional playable character, whose story leads into Hawkeye’s operation. It is surprising that we will get two arrow-based characters back-to-back. This might be linked to the early statement that some plans have been changed out of respect towards recent events. Either way, it also looks like Kate will be a unique character and not just a reskin of Hawkeye, which means that all the leaked characters will be unique additions to the Avengers roster. Cannot wait to see what else Crystal Dynamics has planned for the future and get my hands on the game.

  • Gamescom: ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Reassemble in CG Trailer

Gamescom: ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Reassemble in CG Trailer

Next week, Marvel’s Avengers will finally be released. It has been quite the ride since its initial announcement back in 2017. Looking back, it didn’t say much but we did get the first tease of the game’s story about reassembling the team. Now, three years later we got a reveal trailer, two war tables with one on the horizon and three weekends of testing out the Beta. Now, it’s only a few more days before we can play as our favorite Avengers. To celebrate the launch, Crystal Dynamics will even hold an additional War Table to reveal our first look at what post-launch content we can expect. It doesn’t even stop there, as now during Gamescom weekend, they also released a short CGI trailer to promote the game one last time.

Almost wished they showed this trailer a while back. We get a great heroic shot with the team before Ms. Marvel interrupts Cap’s speech. Everyone’s quirks are highlighted with a brief addition of showcasing a few players experiencing the game. Eagle-eyed viewers might even notice that one girl is wearing a She-Hulk shirt, who is one of the leaked DLC characters for the game.

It all comes to a confrontation with M.O.D.O.K. before it ends. This is the first time we get to see him in action since they revealed his true form. This trailer teases a lot of action and I almost hope that each new story expansion gets a brief trailer like this teasing the main antagonist. Only drawback, it makes me even more impatient to get my hands on the game.

  • Sandra Saad Talks Playing ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Kamala Khan

Sandra Saad Talks Playing ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Kamala Khan

Kamala Khan is slowly coming into the spotlight. She was first introduced in 2014 in Captain Marvel #14. She got her own series that focused on her struggles balancing her life as a Pakistani American and an Inhuman. She idolizes Captain Marvel and takes over her former mantle as Ms. Marvel. It’s a story that found a lot of appeal in the market, especially with her being the first real Muslim to headline her own comic.

She has seen a spike in popularity after appearing in Marvel Rising series. Kathreen Kavari voice the character in this series and many others, which include Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble, and Marvel Future Avengers. Now, she will also headline her own MCU series on Disney+ and will be playable in Marvel’s Avengers. Actress Sandra Saad performed the mo-capture for the character and voices her. In an interview with GameSpot, she talked about taking on the role of the freshly initiated Avenger. The biggest challenge was how to play someone who can embiggen.

I think I just did whatever I wanted. There was a lot of like, ‘Hey, what do you think it feels like to embiggen? Do that.’ And thankfully it worked out. Crystal Dynamics does a really good job of showing me the abilities and showing me the stuff that they’ve come up with. And that really helps inform what the movements are supposed to be. There’s only so much a human of my actual size can do, but I try.

She also discussed what is in store for Kamala in the story. Even the Beta teased that she and Hulk will share quite a few moments. Seems like we can expect a lot of emotional moments once we get our hands on the full game.

I’m not going to give anything away, but she does have special moments with everyone because it’s an Avengers story. It’s not just the Hulk and Kamala story. She relates to all of them just from her own abilities. And just from knowing everyone’s abilities already, you can see how they all relate to her as her heroes. But the Hulk, as you know, he’s a monster who has this thing about him that he can’t really control and Kamala does, too. She has this new power and she’s like, ‘What do I do with it? Is this weird? How do I even use it? Do I use it for good? Is this a disease? What is it?’ And so in that way, you can see that they both have a lot of similarities.

Saad has already given us a great interpretation going by the Beta experience. She gives Kamala a lot of energy, as she tries to reassemble the Avengers. There is a moment in the Beta where she finds old gear from the team and her inner fan leaking out was quite the joy to see. We are only over a week away from the game’s official release. Just recently it was revealed that we will get one more War Table that will tease the post-launch content. Let’s see what the future holds for Kamala and the Avengers.

  • Post-Launch Reveal Teased for Upcoming ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ War Table

Post-Launch Reveal Teased for Upcoming ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ War Table

Here’s a nice surprise. Marvel’s Avengers Beta has officially come to an end. All that is left is for the game is the official launch on September 4th. We were teased that a new War Table might be heading our way shortly before release. Sadly, we didn’t have any news when it would release. Also, what exactly we could expect from it. My personal hopes were to see some kind of tease of what post-launch content they have planned. Looks like my pleas have been heard, as a newsletter sent out via email confirmed that we will get the next War Table on September 1st with some major reveals.

    https://twitter.com/PlayAvenger/status/1298245643652259840

The newsletter confirms some Day One reveals for the launch. Quite curious about what the progression system is that they reference here. Either way, what sticks out is the confirmation of our first look at the post-launch “season” titled Avengers Initiative. This was already teased during the Hawkeye reveal last month. We know that each character has their own story missions. I believe that they purposely call it a post-launch content season as it will be something unique from those character-specific missions. They also will unveil an additional post-launch playable hero. My best guess is that this character will be one of the clone characters like War Machine or She-Hulk that were leaked a few weeks back.

  • ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Had an A-Day Problem

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Had an A-Day Problem

I’ll start this off by saying that I am excited for the full release of Marvel’s Avengers. I had a blast playing the Beta for three weekends. Sunk about 20+ hours into this version alone. This is more than I have put into other games and still waiting for the actual release. There still was something about this game I just wanted to explore. To some degree, it’s been talked about since the initial announcement. I am not here to discuss people’s preferences. Everyone has their own opinion This article is also not to bash the game itself. What I want to talk about what I believe was Avengers’ biggest misstep. The game mismanaged its marketing that it created an A-Day problem.

    marvels-avengers-a-day-gameplay-trailer-screenshots_qtc5

When the game was initially revealed, I became cautiously optimistic. The way they tried to sell this game was that it would continuously expand. You buy the game once and every expansion is for free. I have experience with Destiny that tried something similar. Just lost interest as I had to pay extra for each additional season. The fact that this isn’t the case here had my attention. It makes its profit off of additional costumes or trinkets that you can buy through a market place. So, it is up to you to spend money on the game if you really want a specific look.

That did make some people quite nervous. The timing was terrible for this announcement. Anthem and Fallout 76 had performed terribly in their release with the same promise. It took them years to get to that point they promised but lost many players along the way. Its main focus on multiplayer made the actual content feel rushed even when it worked. Now, everyone feared the same for Avengers.

Our first experience with the game was a story trailer. Taskmaster attacks the Avengers on A-Day. We get a glimpse of gameplay as they fight on the Golden Gate bridge. At the time, we had no idea about Kamala Khan being playable as she narrates the trailer. There were small glimpses of other story missions but it primarily focused on the opening act. This was our inciting incident for the story that kickstarts a global adventure. Still, these glimpses didn’t tell us much about what kind of game or story we can expect.

To be fair, neither did the original 2016 reveal trailer for Spider-Man. That just teased some confrontations but purely focused on the titular character in costume. What Insomniac did nail was the true turning point of hype for the game. At E3 2017, they didn’t just give us another trailer but a total of 8-minutes of gameplay. It was a mission set during the game rather than just the opening. Plus, we only see one singular character’s face model, which was Martin Li. After recently playing both games back-to-back, I noticed similarities between their models. Most notably, how the hair is designed. It wouldn’t be surprising that they are working from the same engine.

Either way, back to Avengers. Crystal Dynamics ended their E3 panel with the announcement that there will be more content post-launch. The thought of additional heroes and maps for free is a great selling point. The only issues are that players were jaded by past experiences with such promises. Worst of all, they didn’t say what these expansions meant for the game. Is it an unfinished story that keeps expanding? Would each expansion add a new main threat? There was no transparency about what additional content would mean. Especially as they barely showed the base game. What could’ve been a selling point became a promise for more. It was that fact that got people nervous and it made people question the game from the start.

Okay, that isn’t quite fair. We did get a massive 19-minute demo of A-Day. This gave us a look at how the core Avengers played. It was rough around the edges but it looked promising. My only gripe was that the HUD seemed to lack personality. At the time, a lot of people were asking for more characters. They never revealed anything as people shouted for Hawkeye but demand was there. What was important was to build on this momentum towards the April release. Well, that’s how it should’ve been.

The original release date of May got delayed until September. More time meant they could polish the game. The only thing they really revealed was that Ms. Marvel was a playable character. Each trailer continued to just tease brief glimpses of actual gameplay. It only showed you in missions running around and beating up minions. In a way, it was the marketing that started the feeling of “repetitive” long before we got to play it. What was revealed about the story? A-Day of course, repeating mostly what we’ve already seen with some snippets of the aftermath. Whoever was already skeptical just felt justified based on the lack of content presented.

    marvels_avengers-900x506

What’s worse, it created a feeling that they weren’t at a point to show much more. Most notably, nothing was revealed for how multiplayer worked. The question would arise about how would it balance a single-player? They made promises of years worth of content. Yet, it seems that they are embarrassed to show more of the base game. It felt like the only true story mission is A-Day with maybe some scenarios here and there. Most of the game would be multiplayer which added to the fear of repetition. The game barely showed anything and that first impression has cemented. Some believed it just focused on single-player it would’ve been better. Just like I did, comparisons to Spider-Man are inevitable.

There was a turning point though. The first marketing push that went beyond A-Day was the first War Table in June. That means since it’s announcement back in September 2019, it took them around 10 months before we got anything substantial about what exactly Avengers is. One could point out that the pandemic didn’t help matters. Still, there were only. a few months left until launch day. Personally, the June War Table was what sold me initially on the game. It was my jumping on point so I believe it was a great direction. Especially with the promise of consistent updates through this format.

It finally revealed how the game plays. We got a feeling for the customization options and what mission types will be included. Crystal Dynamics also used comic panels as a reference to show their research. This was a great touch to show they paid attention. I loved that the gear has different effects from comic history, like Pym Particles to shrink enemies. Yes, it would’ve been nice if there were actual visual changes. Still, it also goes against the whole unique costume approach. It wasn’t until this moment that the game finally felt like it was coming together. The only thing is, it did so two months before release. For most, this was already too late to change that first impression that dominated since the announcement. I will point out though, that I have actively seen much more enthusiasm and enjoyment since the Beta launched.

So, the game was finally picking up steam. Then, Sony announces that Spider-Man was exclusive to PlayStation. For some, this was a boiling point that just enhanced the already negative first impression. Square-Enix slowly started rolling out movie-level tie-in products. These created this feeling of disconnect or “anti-consumerism” as some called it. Keep in mind though, this is not a new practice. PlayStation has used the exclusivity model even back in 2009 with Batman: Arkham AsylumPS owners were the only ones able to play as Joker at the time.

    maxresdefault

The reality is, it is a selling point. Also, Sony wants to remain consistent with its brand. Spider-Man is an exclusive franchise on their console. They probably went into heavy negotiations to ensure it remains that way. Actually, Sony generally has an obsession with exclusivity deals. Destiny 2: Forsaken and Fortnite have an extreme amount of exclusive skins or weapons. The spotlight on a major brand like Marvel just made Sony’s model stand out more. If it weren’t for Spider-Man, the other promotional items would’ve been ignored. Yet, no matter how the Internet reacts, the pre-orders for the game skyrocketed because a character as iconic as Spider-Man will draw in attention. It’s not a good practice but it sadly just works.

Everything calmed down a bit as the Beta was finally made available. Reactions seemed more positive with the usual outliers just reiterating their existing concerns. Naturally, the Beta is a very chopped up version of the game. People that are concerned about a lack of story will get that same feeling here. The Beta rushes through A-Day without warning the player. It once created the image of this is how the game works. Besides, one concern was the mission diversity. Naturally, by the time the third week rolled around, people were still playing it. At that point, it could only be repetitive. Let’s be honest, the bugs and re-used assets didn’t help. Nothing was added throughout the week that just limited the experience. It probably would’ve been better off with just two weeks. This most likely was extended to three because Sony had to have an extra weekend exclusive to them.

    WCCFmarvelsavengers

I am not here to discuss what the Beta is or isn’t. Mainly wanted to point out how this early access also paints the picture from a marketing point-of-view. Especially with how they are heavily advertising that people can access it. Also, this gave us an important opportunity to get a vision for how involved Crystal Dynamics will be. How would they handle critique from the player base to ensure longevity? The inclusion of a Discord network and open communication via Social Media took away some of my concerns. They were actively communicating and adapting according to feedback. Hell, they even updated the Beta regularly throughout all three weeks. This gave some a sense of security that was sorely lacking before.

The game has flaws and it is uncertain if they will be able to fix everything by the time it is released. We don’t know how frequently we can expect new updates. Luckily, a leak did show that there are quite a few heroic additions planned. Everyone has their preference. I believe that marketing did create a lot of bias that is hard to overcome. The models were rough. We barely knew anything about it. All we knew, was 5Gum gets you a free Emote. Their promotion team just took the wrong angle. They believed A-Day alone could sell the game until shortly before launch. Its focus on exclusivity deals and brandings watered down the work Crystal Dynamics put in for some.

    hawkeye-marvels-avengers

Yet, saying it would’ve been better as a single-player game does the same thing. I believe it when they said this game ambitious. They approached it from the beginning as an expanding adventure. If done right, this could be an amazing experience. Sadly, they just didn’t really sell it for a long time. Avengers had a chance to grow out of the shadows of those that came before. I believe that if they stick to the War Table updates, continue to communicate with their active players, and clean up the bugs, this game could be a long-term experience many will not want to miss out on. Here’s hoping we get one more War Table before launch that just maybe teases that ambition a bit more.

  • Usman Ally and Jolene Andersen Talk Voicing A.I.M. Villains in ‘Marvel’s Avengers’

Usman Ally and Jolene Andersen Talk Voicing A.I.M. Villains in ‘Marvel’s Avengers’

Marvel’s Avengers is building up to its release in around two weeks. We are about to enter the final week of Beta testing. They’ve spent quite a lot of time focusing on A-Day since the reveal at E3 2019. Sadly, it felt like they were holding back. It being a service-based game didn’t quite help the popular consensus online. Let’s not forget the controversy that certainly didn’t help. Still, the game was performing well in top pre-order charts. Now, we also get our official full look at the game’s main antagonist MODOK.

We also got the reveal that Usman Ally is voicing the iconic brainiac in the game. He actually has some history with Marvel, as he played Vincent on Agents of SHIELD.

Alongside his tweet he also talked about how George Tarleton slowly turns into the big brained man we see below. It sounds like there is more to the transformation into MODOK than just him being an evil scientist stereotype.

“In terms of how George becomes this creature, this thing and how so much of it is driven by his ambition to help people, I think there is a genuine belief that what he is doing is for the betterment of human beings and that strong, strong sense of self and his position in society, wanting to do more, is what continues to drive him. I found that to be some of the really fascinating stuff and how that gets blasted with one’s ego or one’s own insecurities coming to the fore. He’s a very complex character.”

It also gives us our first look at Monica Rappaccini, who was the focus of a Hulk-specific mission in the Beta. She is voiced by Jolene Andersen, who also just recently appeared on SHIELD‘s seventh season as Olga. She also talked about her character in an interview with Comic Book.

“She has this one-track mind in a way and that’s what I feel is her strongest point, and what makes her so powerful. Also her drive, her ability to manipulate everything around her. She is a perfect specimen of a person which makes her a perfect villain, I like that, and she comes in an unassuming bottle at the same time, I love all of that nuance with her and I don’t know if that’s her in a nutshell, but that’s how I feel about her.”

An interesting tidbit is that they also provided the voice actors with comics to prepare for their roles. Ally pointed out that they weren’t forced to but were provided with the necessary comics if they asked for them. Makes me want to start working there if I get access to their large library on comics. The team at Crystal Dynamics also offered a short look at AIM in a video on the official Marvel channel.

  • ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Tops US & UK Pre-Order Charts

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Tops US & UK Pre-Order Charts

Avengers has been quite an interesting game to follow. It has been smeared with controversy since the reveal that Spider-Man would be a PlayStation exclusive character. No matter where one stands on the matter, it paid off as a marketing strategy. Shortly after the announcement, sales on Amazon UK skyrocketed with it shooting up by 188% in sales for the regular edition. It also saw an increase of 133% for the deluxe edition. This placed the game firmly at #10 and #19 respectively a few weeks ago. This is the reason they took this route and the controversy pushes the word-of-mouth even stronger.

Even after the discussion around the game has calmed down, sales did not slow down for this game. People got a chance to play the game during the Beta and there were theories on how this could affect the sales of the game. Well, looks like the game got another boost. Sadly we can’t see the sales rankings this time. Still, Marvel’s Avengers now sits comfortably at #1 and #6 of the UK sales charts for PlayStation 4.

    amazon

Those wondering if it crashed over on Xbox One. The game is sitting at a pretty great #3. The ranking leaders FIFA 21 and PGA Tour 2K21 are sports games, which are generally strong sellers. It was commonly the most consistent seller back when I even worked in the gaming retail industry. Only the Deluxe Edition is further down at #19 as of writing this article.

    xbox

Amazon US is hiding its list but to draw a comparison, the PS4 version of the game sits at #2 over at Best Buy. This is only beaten by another sports entry NBA 2K21 Mamba Forever Edition that releases the same day. Once again, the Deluxe Edition isn’t far behind comfortably placed at #5. As this list includes all versions, the Avengers on the Xbox is also in the top ten. Even locally here in Austria, I interviewed a local electronics retailer and they confirmed that a lot was ordered due to the high demand. No matter where one stands regarding the controversies, Avengers is an interesting prospect for casual fans. Who doesn’t want to play as their favorite character? We are only a few weeks away and I personally cannot wait to experience the game.

  • ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Spider-Man DLC Confirmed for March

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Spider-Man DLC Confirmed for March

Starting to feel bad for Crytal Dynamics. Marvel’s Avengers had another massive leak today that revealed around 15 unannounced characters. It hasn’t been easy for the developer. A. lot of their plans seem to be getting released online way in advance than originally scheduled. We thought this was it, as the Beta was made available on all platforms. Well, not quite as the release date for their most controversial exclusive has also been revealed prematurely. The UK retailer GAME has sent out e-mails that confirm the release month for the PS exclusive DLC character Spider-Man.

Don’t know if this is known but I got a email from Game UK who I ore ordered with saying that spider man will come out in March !
    byu/Judewhite1 inPlayAvengers

It is hard to make out but it does state that he will be made available by March. It isn’t an exact release date but it seems reasonable. Hawkeye was confirmed as the first DLC character, so he probably is getting the most development currently. We also have no official render for Spidey, so they might still be finalizing his design. With all the different characters revealed, there is the possibility we could see a constant stream of updates every two to three months. Keep in mind though that nothing has been confirmed so far. We barely know how far in development they are with most of these characters.

Naturally, this exclusivity deal is a selling point for the PlayStation. It worked out quite well for the developer going by the UK sales charts after the announcement. They’ve also already included it on the box art to boost sales before its upcoming September release. Naturally, it is a very controversial move but it seems strongly linked to the branding of the console. Spider-Man and it’s Miles Morales spin-off are only available on that console. They may have gunned hard to keep that consistency even if it is a rather questionable decision. I believe this might be a timed exclusive but we will have to wait until that is confirmed.

  • 15 DLC Characters Revealed in Third ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Data Leak

15 DLC Characters Revealed in Third ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Data Leak

There is still more to say about Marvel’s Avengers. Ever since the Beta launched, a Reddit user who goes by 6plus4equals52 has been deciphering the code of the upcoming game. In it, he uncovered that a variety of clone characters would be made available at one point. I used an old Lego leak for the game to cross-reference its validity and it seemed to confirm their inclusion. Shortly after, an update to the Beta revealed more characters. It confirmed my theory of Captain Marvel being added as one of the first DLC characters. This weekend, the Beta was made available on Xbox and PC and it looks like some more upcoming characters got revealed as a result.
Let’s start with what everyone is interested in. The latest leak confirms that around 17 characters are planned for the game. 15 haven’t been officially announced yet alongside SpideAs such, the list of unannounced DLC characters is as followed:

    • Ant-Man
    • Vision
    • Black Panther
    • Dr. Strange
    • Falcon
    • Mar-Vell
    • Mockingbird
    • Quake
    • Winter Soldier
    • Scarlet Witch
    • Captain Marvel
    • Kate Bishop
    • She-Hulk
    • War Machine

This is quite an extensive list for the Avengers Initiative plans. There is a good chance that some of these characters already have in-game models. We have known that Ant-Man would show up ever since his reveal at last year’s E3. At first, we assumed that these characters will be purely available through DLC. Last time, I did question if there is some chance that characters could be unlocked through the main story mode. We still don’t know how Captain America will return in the story but a part of it will be to slowly unlock the various members throughout the game. The before-mentioned list of characters is all categorized alongside existing characters as “UnlockPlayableCharacter”. Here an excerpt from the code:

    UnlockPlayableCharacter_BlackPanther
    UnlockPlayableCharacter_CaptainMarvel
    UnlockPlayableCharacter_Captain_America
    UnlockPlayableCharacter_DrStrange
    UnlockPlayableCharacter_Falcon
    UnlockPlayableCharacter_Hawkeye
    UnlockPlayableCharacter_Hulk

Now, what does this all mean? We know that Captain America and Iron Man need to be unlocked through the game. Hawkeye is also listed here as an unlockable character but will only be available through DLC. It throws a wrench into our previous theory but could confirm that some characters can only be unlocked after a certain part of the main story is finished. As such, you won’t be able to just wait out and access Hawkeye for early missions in the game. This would also be in line with how the last War Table placed Hawkeye as part of a follow-up to the Reassemble storyline.
We still have to wait for official confirmation but the appearance of Black Panther confirms my theory based on the Lego. The only question remains which characters are unique and which ones will be clones. The following characters would be the easiest to connect:

    • Iron Man – War Machine
    • Hulk – She-Hulk
    • Black Widow – Mockingbird
    • Captain Marvel – Mar-Vell
    • Hawkeye – Kate Bishop
    • Dr. Strange – Scarlet Witch

There is one more aspect that is interesting about this leak. It confirms the addition of a few other characters that might appear throughout the story. It mentions iconic Marvel characters Ultron, Vindicator, and Monica. The last name could be a connection to Monica Rameau but there is no definitive proof for that The Reddit post also mentions Red Hulk and Deathlok, but I couldn’t confirm this while going through the code that was provided. Still, in a game that will feature countless robots, Ultron seems like a safe bet as part of the story. With Vision as a playable character, he could also be a part of that character’s specific story missions. Whatever they have planned, these leaks are slowly showcasing what they meant when they said this will be an ambitious project.

  • ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Beta: Promising or Worrying?

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Beta: Promising or Worrying?

It has been a steep hill for Square-Enix’s ambitious Avengers project. People have been quite jaded by service-based games. The controversies surrounding Anthem, Fallout 76, and Final Fantasy XIV played a big part in that. They were sold as the next major AAA game that would keep players invested for many years. Yet, they ended up never delivering on their promises. As such, by the time they were able to solve these issues most players have already stopped playing. So, it is rather risky for a massive IP like Marvel to enter such a market, especially when facing their own set of controversies surrounding exclusivity deals. Now, all eyes are on the first closed Beta for PlayStation per-orders. This could determine if the game will deliver on its promises and offer a good first look at what is to come.

    Avengers Assemble

The game’s story looks promising as a single-player experience, especially the reveal trailer for M.O.D.O.K. which hyped me up for what it could offer. A misstep, however, was their marketing only focusing on A-Day. This created this feeling of a lack of content that wasn’t addressed until a video in June. It is unsure how much of the game will be story-based missions, but they have been a bit more transparent. Why is it important? This will probably be a major selling point. Unlike other service-games, this IP already has years worth of potential story content and characters. If most of the missions just consist of dialogue without any animations, it could undersell the work put into it. The Beta throws us into a shortened version of A-Day, the search for Jarvis and Nick Fury. This highlighted a bit more of the story that was hidden up until this point and seemed quite promising. A personal highlight was the battle against Abomination that offered a great set-piece and teased the potential of future boss fights.  Hopefully, they will stay true to their statement and continue the story even beyond AIM.

The War Zone missions you unlock after the story are limited. They do show a bit of variety, even if there could be more. We get character missions, like Hulk’s “Condition: Green.” Here we have to infiltrate a gamma-lab to avoid it becoming a weapon. Sadly, there weren’t any animations to give this mission more life. We got some voice-over from various characters but didn’t actually see much of the villain of this vision. Maybe it’s due to this being a Beta but I really hope they give character-specific stories more attention. Don’t want them to be just another War Zone mission with some extra dialogue. Another highlight was “To Tame a Titan.” After you infiltrated an AIM facility, you see something looming in the distance only for you to realize it’s a boss battle against a giant Warbot. There was some actual build up to this moment. Hope to see more of this in the game.

Most of the other missions consisted of combat. Sometimes they add variety by having siege-like areas you need to secure. After a few missions, however, you did start to notice the same corridor repeating. It’s a Beta, so they probably limited the environments and game styles. Still, they will need to offer some variety to truly give the game legs. Luckily, open areas did give you freedom to find secret little missions that offered some additional incentive. If they do have to reuse assets, it would be good if they space it out accordingly. Would be best to avoid a constant feeling of déjà-vu.

    Focus on Character

Let’s talk about the playable characters. As soon as you unlock the Helicarrier, you have access to four characters. The Beta lets you play Ms. Marvel, Hulk, Iron Man, and Black Widow. Thor and Captain America are only playable during A-Day as a short tease of what they offer. Thor plays a lot like Kratos from God of War with how he uses his hammer. Captain America seems to take some inspiration from the Batman Arkham Games in how he in combat. Even if they do feel unique and play different, the controls are standardized. Each character has a light and heavy attack. They can dodge and even counter enemies to avoid damage. Everyone has a third-person targeting function that depends on the character’s unique abilities. If you play right, you can even juggle enemies to create some interesting combos that fit your play style. Their approach is especially highlighted through the gear system. It is a bit too much like Destiny‘s design. So, you’ll probably invest resources to upgrade an item only to find a better one shortly after. The cool idea though is that you can add special effects to attacks. For example, Iron Man can use his beam to shrink enemies through Pym tech.

Here is a quick rundown of the four main playable characters and how they differ from each other:

    • Kamala Khan a.k.a. Ms. Marvel gets the most spotlight in this game. She is the easiest to start with, mostly because she gets the most gear in the story missions. Her attacks take down a wide area thanks to her stretching abilities. You can also target your punch to take enemies out from the distance. The best part is that after upgrading you can even grab them. She also uses her stretching powers to maneuver the environment. It is a great touch even if it isn’t always as responsive as it should be.
    • Hulk is really heavy in comparison to the others. He is the only one that can cling unto specific walls. What is odd is that he can only jump off of those areas instead of the classic wall running mechanic. Given his focus on combat, he cannot block attacks. Instead, he uses his rage to heal and take less damage. These kinds of small changes fit the characters and force you to change your approach with each character.
    • Iron Man‘s heavy attacks are his iconic beams. The action meter decreases with each use, so you cannot spam them. You can’t just camp out enemies while hovering over them. When you dash from a hover you will end in the flying animation. It is sadly very restrictive and needs some practice to get right, especially shooting while flying is difficult due to a lack of a lock-on function. It probably is the one thing I hope they expand in the future. Still, you can instantly switch between flying, fighting, and hovering which handles great.
    • Black Widow is a fun character to play but could be fleshed out more. She can pull out her guns at any time to take down enemies from a distance. Found myself switching quite a bit when I was low on health. Sadly, no stealth functions to hide from enemies. Her special ability to cloak is mostly so you can avoid a few hits. So, you can’t sneak up bad guys to take them down instantly. Would like to see them use her unique abilities in interesting ways for unique mission types potentially.

    Question of Villainy

You get to try out these abilities on a variety of enemy types. At first glance, it could seem like you are just pounding away on damage sponges (won’t deny that some are). AIM’s focus on tech allowed them to add some diversity to the enemy types. You have your classic enemies with guns, staffs, and shield. Some also have their own abilities to use against you. there are turrets and drones are there to distract you. We see some variations of comic enemies like the Adaptoids. Then there are also heavy types like the Aliens-inspired mech suits, spider-mechs, and the before-mentioned giant Warbot. The Beta probably showcases some enemies from later in the story. I do hope we get some more surprises in enemy types in the full game.

    marvels-avengers-screenshot-06-ps4-06feb20-en-us

Yes, they do recycle throughout the Beta but depending on the mission they also have unique properties. These are similar to how your own upgrades. This adds some nice world building to what happened after the Avengers disbanded. In the “Condition: Green” mission, most enemies are infused with gamma radiation. These return while facing villains with cryo weapons. So, you have to avoid getting frozen and being poisoned. It’s a small touch but it does mix up battles in an interesting way to make you strategize a bit more. In my mind, this keeps it from just being a button-smasher as you need to pay attention to what is happening. You can easily get ganged up while focusing on one specific enemy. That got me killed more often than I am willing to confess throughout my playtime.

The only thing that stands out is that all enemies so far are AIM’s goons and robots. We barely spend time with the mercenaries, so hope they will also return. Marvel has such a large world to be inspired by. It would be a waste to just focus on one singular organization. We could see a mission suddenly interrupted by HYDRA or even Flag-Smasher’s ULTIMATUM. We get to visit New York City for a bit, so they could introduce minor villains for special missions. You could play as Kamala Khan trying to race the Hood through the city after a robbery. The advantage of this IP is that the different characters from the comics can help create unique mission types to avoid repetition. The multiplayer’s function should not limit what is possible with this game.

    Room for Potential

In the end, it’s still a Beta that only reflects a small portion of the actual game. There are some noticeable bugs. A personal favorite was Kamala’s hair just vanishing into thin air during a cut scene. Didn’t even realize it was here until it was over. The multiplayer aspect faced some connection issues. It is nowhere as bad as it could be in a Beta. My only major gripe was that twice I got kicked out due to a connection error. I was playing with AI companions, so there was no reason for it. If this happens in the actual game, I hope your party just gets replaced with AI. Imagining a two hour mission being interrupted at the last second would be infuriating. Overall, the game has some rough edges but with the service-concept, I believe this can be fixed easily. The developer Crystal Dynamics has been very on point listening to player feedback. This is one of the reasons why Hawkeye was announced as the first DLC character. Still, here are some things I noticed while playing the game that I hope will be updated sooner rather than later:

    • The menus need a complete overhaul. It was the only thing that really bothered me throughout the game. There are a lot of different menus with additional sub-menus that just become disorienting. For example, they could just turn the collectibles could just be added into the Helicarrier as a special museum area. Could add a Stan Lee cameo as a silent SHIELD agent, who works there. Would give it a bit more flair and a sense of progression. I noticed that the character card wasn’t in the War Table stream, so it might just be for the Beta. I just think a lot of functions that aren’t necessary for missions should be added to the base.

    • Speaking of menus, the start menu is quite bland. Instead of just starting the game with a click of my controller, I have to select a button. It is just an unnecessary additional step in my opinion. The update page could be kept on the main page as a notification menu. The marketplace I think would work better as an actual shop in the Helicarrier. I know, it’s probably there so they can entice people when starting to game but it’s very lackluster.
    • I think this is due to the Beta skipping a lot of sequences but some important information is just revealed very late. It is one of the reasons I kept dying throughout the second mission. I didn’t know that there are healing containers, or that there were any benefits to going into rage mode. I didn’t realize willpower was the game’s name for health. The counter was only revealed around two to three hours into playing, which would’ve saved my life countless times. Hope that the actual A-Day mission spreads this out much better.
    • The dynamic camera is a great idea on paper. It makes a lot of action sequences look great but it becomes quite disorienting at times. Motion blur especially adds to that. Sometimes when a lot is happening it just goes crazy. I noticed especially with Hulk this to be the case. It starts shacking every time he slams to the ground. Maybe just an option to change it a bit would be helpful.
    • Levels are a bit strange in this. I think they only really add to the skill tree. The character card also has levels but I couldn’t unlock anything. I don’t know if you get more willpower through it. I think it should add to your stats in addition to the gear. Whatever it does and how the character card works (outside of paying to unlock in advance) just wasn’t well communicated in the game.
    • It would be good to add the length of the mission in the War Zone briefing. If you want to just jump in for a quick mission, you might accidentally end up in one that lasts about 30 minutes to even two hours.
    • Also, I hope they rename the difficulty settings, as “Challenge II” or “Challenge III” doesn’t really say anything. I would love to see threat levels such as “Venom” or “Thanos” as an indicator and to add to the world-building of the game.
    • This is more a personal pet-peeve but I think the character’s health meter should be in the bottom left corner. Most of the action is below and it just feels unnatural to constantly look up. Also, it is a waste that their power bar only includes an almost unrecognizable icon. Why not make the symbol a unique aspect of the character (Kamala’s is drawn, Hulk’s is punched into the screen) to just add some flair to the HUD. It being placed in the corner with the various meters coming out of it. As of now with the menu design, it feels very by-the-numbers and could use some spice.

    Great Potential

These are just improvements I hope to see. In general, I had a blast playing this game. Even though it is just probably 10% of the actual product, I already invested around ten to twelve hours. Each character gives you a new experience and offers some variety. I underestimated how much the skill tree changed my approach to combat as I leveled up. I cannot wait to develop the Helicarrier back to its former glory. Really hope you have a lot of freedom to do so. This is something I have always wanted n a Marvel game. Hope it gets expanded as it continuous to grow. Once you have the Helicarrier built and defeated AIM, maybe you get to build your own Avengers mansion or even a Triskellion. The teased faction concept also sounds like a fun way to expand the world. There is just a lot to be excited about.

While I say that, I do have my worries. The most important thing moving forward is transparency. One of the driving factors for these service games failing was that there was no real communication. All you were stuck with was a bare-bones game with the empty promise of a better future. Avengers already laid the groundwork with the tease of Hawkeye as the first DLC character but how long will we wait? Is this a matter of half a year or a few months? All that is currently in the air.

My hope is that we get a road map. Street Fighter V recently revealed one for their latest season pass, which offered a good overview of what is to come. We don’t need to know the exact release date but just to get a feeling how this game will continue to expand. This game consists of so many elements that you can easily underwhelm your audience. People will stop caring if the story missions you promise are just two pieces of dialogue with re-used assets. There is still a month to go and hopefully another War Table to reveal what the future has in store for us. As of now, I am really excited to get my hands on the game and find out how this game will continue to develop.
