  • Dwayne Johnson is 100% Committed to Building the DC Universe

Dwayne Johnson is 100% Committed to Building the DC Universe

Dwayne Johnson has been hyping up the arrival of Black Adam for years, and now it looks like he’s in it for the long run. After nearly a decade of development on Black Adam, whose live-action presence was first conceived as being the villain of Shazam! before shifting to a solo spin-off instead, Johnson is ready to make the character his own.

The wrestler-turned-actor-turned-renaissance man revealed in a recent interview with Comic Book that he is “100% committed” to sticking around as the violent anti-hero for years to come. Not only that, but he’s willing to help build the entire DC Universe as well:

I am 100% committed to not only Black Adam but then expanding the Black Adam universe, the DC universe. I am an optimist from the word, ‘Go.’ So, to me and to all of us up here, all universes exist in our heads. I will, we all will, work very hard to make sure we are honoring the mythology but also giving the fans what they want. I hear the fans, we all do, and I pick up everything they’re putting down. It doesn’t get by me, it doesn’t get by these guys [producer Hiram Garcia, producer Beau Flynn, director Jaume Collet-Serra]. This is the beginning, hopefully, fingers crossed, of a very long storytelling road that Black Adam is the anchoring jet fuel now that will then push and press this universe out.

The DC Extended Universe, or DCEU for short, has experienced some tumultuous growth in the past few years. Starting as a cinematic world crafted by Zack Snyder, several critical flops led to a tonal rebranding that featured more colorful and comedic projects like James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, and the aforementioned Shazam!.

The past couple of weeks have seen more changes in leadership, so perhaps the company could use someone of Johnson‘s caliber to assist in setting things straight. Black Adam appears to have the makings of a bona fide hit, and time will tell if the film’s vision is worth expanding into other projects.

  • ‘Black Adam’ Producer Teases “Real Violence” That is “Rough and Gruesome”

‘Black Adam’ Producer Teases “Real Violence” That is “Rough and Gruesome”

There was some uncertainty about just how brutal the upcoming adaptation of Black Adam will be. Yet, the first trailer drop certainly confirmed that he’ll have a darker turn as he’s a hero that isn’t scared of killing off anyone who stands in his way. Dwayne Johnson is usually an actor that has stuck primarily to pushing the PG-13 rating but it looks like the upcoming film will remain for all four quadrants but will offer “real violence” according to its producer Beau Flynn.

Just from the experience of all the Dwayne Johnson movies we’ve been privileged to be part of, we’re a four quadrant. I mean, we really like to service all demos, all ages, but we had to be authentic to Black Adam and we had to really push,” Flynn said. “The violence is real and it can be rough and gruesome in places, but I think the audience will be okay. I think the kids will be okay. There is a huge heart in this movie. And at the same time, you have to have fun. You have to have joy in these movies. And I think even when you see the trailer, you see, there’s like even the palette, the colors, the world, it’s not as dark as some other movies, but it still has some dark undertones. And I think that’s important. The tone I think is what I’m really most proud of with the film. That’s hard. Tone is hard.

    Beau Flynn

So, if you were worried that it wouldn’t live up to the standards of Black Adam’s usual violence in the comics, you’ll be in for a treat. The first trailer did tease that some more fun shenanigans will also be at play but the one guy he punched into the ocean might not have survived that enforced travel. We’ll see if future trailers tease more of the action that is heading our way and if it truly can hold a candle to what they promise.

  • ‘Black Adam’ and ‘Shazam’ Were Originally One Film

‘Black Adam’ and ‘Shazam’ Were Originally One Film

After a long wait, the Black Adam trailer has finally arrived Dwayne Johnson‘s dream project of taking on the role of Theo-Adam is finally revealed to the world. The trailer gives us a quick recap of his origin and teases his eventual battle with, or perhaps against, the Justice Society of America. Yet, it turns out that the original plan was for him to appear in the Shazam film, which would’ve actually been the origin of both. We did get a brief tease, but Johnson offered some insight into their initial plans.

The original plan, maybe five or six years ago I think, was to tell the two origin stories of Shazam! and Black Adam in the same movie. That’s what we had worked on. The script was delivered. When we all read the script, I immediately felt like, ‘We have to separate these two movies. We have to honor Shazam! and that origin story and what that is and what that can be for the fans and then we also have to tell our story, too, as well.’ I think in separating them, with the majority of the world not knowing who Black Adam if you weren’t a serious comic book fan, it was important I think to separate them and tell each story respectively.

Producer Beau Flynn also recalls what it was like when he and Hiram Garcia got the call from Johnson that they would turn Black Adam into its own separate project rather than just have both these properties smashed together.

I got a phone call very early in the morning from Dwayne Johnson which is always very intimidating. He called Hiram and I, he just said, ‘Brothers. We’re gonna make Black Adam. We’re gonna tell this story. It’s so big and so important,’ and that was it. It was really an amazing… Dwayne’s instincts are so extraordinary but he was right. Again, we were deep in it and developing that script with both of them and there’s a reason why sometimes in our business sometimes you have to keep moving forward and sometimes the business tells you. We weren’t really cracking it. It wasn’t really working and then that’s when that call came through and everything changed.

    Beau Flynn

It’s certainly interesting to get a look behind the scenes and find out how films were originally pitched. The move was definitely smart as it gave the films a unique opportunity to build up a special crossover while also giving their respective (anti-)heroes time to find their footing in the world.

New ‘Black Adam’ Promo Art Teases a Showdown With Hawkman

It looks like some more promo art for Black Adam has found its way online highlighting the members of the Justice Society of America. Not only that, but it also highlights Black Adam as part of the team. While he seems like an unlikely candidate to join any kind of team, the new promotional images offer a good look at the members of the team, which we previously saw through Funko Pops that don’t highlight every detail these characters will bring to the table. The images were shared by @DCversio1.

Overall, the costumes look great, and it’ll be interesting to see if we get a full showdown between the heroes with the newfound ally that has his own understanding of what it means to represent justice. ‘One of the promotional material seems to imply that there will be a battle with Hawkman at least.

The visual of having the members be highlighted with diamonds while Black Adam is a lightning bolt highlights that he may be among other heroes, he definitely stands out on his own terms. We see a continued highlight of Doctor Fate’s unique mask that seems split down the middle with one side reflecting order and possibly chaos, something our very own John Sabato has noted in the past. Or, he just took a punch from the almighty wielder of the power of Shazam that left quite a sizeable dent in his helmet.

The introduction of the JSA is also a big moment for DC movies and may highlight there’s more than just the Justice League. We’re still anticipating a trailer that offers us a better look at these heroes in action. Maybe the first trailer teases that very battle for supremacy included in the promo art.

  • Funko Merchandise Offers New Look at The JSA in ‘Black Adam’

Funko Merchandise Offers New Look at The JSA in ‘Black Adam’

One aspect of Black Adam that has fans anticipating its arrival is the DC Extended Universe debut of the Justice Society of America. The team has appeared in live action before, in projects like Smallville and Stargirl, but this will be the big screen debut for team. The roster includes some fan favorites with Hawkman and Doctor Fate leading this new era of heroes alongside Atom Smasher and Cyclone. Some merchandise for the film from the ever popular Funko Pops has provided our best look at the team.

Perhaps one of the film’s most exciting additions is Kent Nelson, aka Doctor Fate, who’ll be played by former 007, Pierce Brosnan. Some fans were a bit puzzled to see the character seem to not have eye holes in his helmet, which the Pop figure confirms, and shows off some interesting dents and scratches. The suit is also oddly grey, which is strange since footage has seemingly revealed a blue suit.

The Pops also give the first clear look at Cyclone, who we’ve only seen minimally and not in action. The suit looks to react to her abilities, when she conjures wind it seems to react and open, its a quite impressive modernization of the character’s costumes and even keeps some of the pinstripes we’ve seen in the comics.

Albert Rothstein makes his DCEU debut in a costume so accurate to the comics that it even includes the white eyes that many want to see on a live-action Batsuit.

Finally, Funko has revealed Hawkman in all his glory, sporting the winged helmet and glorious wings briefly seen to expand in the DC 2022 film promo. The Pop also includes Hawkman’s magic mace, a staple with both him and Hawkgirl.

All Black Adam Pops are available for purchase now, and perfectly timed as fans can expect the first trailer for Black Adam next week on June 8th.

  • ‘Black Adam’ Merchandise Offers Best Look Yet at Film’s Villain

‘Black Adam’ Merchandise Offers Best Look Yet at Film’s Villain

The identity of the villain of DC’s upcoming film, Black Adam, was a bit of a secret for some time. Initially, it was believed that Dwayne Johnson’s hero would be going up against Eclypso; however, it’s since been revealed, in a leaked look at Funko Pops for the film, that Sabbac would serve as the primary antagonist. Now, thanks once again to Funko, fans have their first good look at Sabbac.

Things started to piece together when we learned the production was eyeing Marwan Kenzari in the role of Ishmael, a role many fans were quickly able to connect to Ishmael Gregor, one of the few that have held the powers of Sabbac. While it was never confirmed Kenzari joined the film, he can be spotted in some of footage we’ve seen, and the recent Funko products seem to confirm the rumored villainous turn. The character looks to be incredibly accurate to the Ishmael Gregor version of the character. Sporting a humanoid form, sprouting two massive horns and a smoldering pentagram on the torso.

  • The Rock Confirms ‘Black Adam’ Trailer Release Date

The Rock Confirms ‘Black Adam’ Trailer Release Date

The upcoming slate for the DC Extended Universe is quite packed as many major players from the DC Universe are set to arrive in their very own feature films. One of the most exciting upcoming releases is Black Adam, a film that has long been in development, with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson having been cast in the role for over ten years before. While we haven’t seen a ton from the film yet, it seems that’s all going to change in just a couple of weeks.

The Rock has taken to Instagram to confirm that the first trailer for Black Adam is set to release on June 8th. The film has been hit with multiple delays, most recently moving from July to October 21st. The first official look at the film back came in February when Warner Brothers released a featurette highlighting the upcoming release of 2022, revealing characters like Atom Smasher, Doctor Fate, Hawkman, and Cyclone, but this first trailer should give us a much better idea of what to expect from the film.

The Rock has used social media to promote and give fans a look at his films for a while now, kicking things into the next gear for Black Adam. He revealed that throughout filming he would not sit on the character’s throne until he felt he’d earned the right to sit in such a sacred place for the character.

Black Adam stars Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Sarah Shahi, Quintessa Swindell, and Pierce Brosnan alongside Dwayne Johnson.

  • New ‘Black Adam’ Funko Spotted With Hawkman’s Ship

New ‘Black Adam’ Funko Spotted With Hawkman’s Ship

It’s been over a year since we first heard descriptions of Hawkman’s iconic ship making its ways to the live-action Black Adam film. While the first tease didn’t give us a good look at it, a new Funko Pop has been spotted in the wild that includes Hawkman riding his ship. While it’ll likely look quite a bit different in live-action, it does seem like it’s our first look at his ship in the upcoming film.

The other set of Funko Pops we’re first seen a few weeks ago, as we got our first look at the film’s villain Sabbac, alongside the Justice Society of America members and two Black Adam-focused Funko Pops. At the time, the ship wasn’t included, so it’s a nice surprise that they are also releasing one.

There is a chance that he doesn’t actually have his own ship, but the team of the Justice Society is actively using one. They could’ve reused Thanagarian technology, which would be a great way to confirm the origin of this version of the character, while also giving the team a way to keep up with Black Adam, who’ll likely just fly from one location to the next whenever he pleases. For now, we can only speculate.

  • Producer Hiram Garcia Reveals Why ‘Black Adam’ Was Delayed

Producer Hiram Garcia Reveals Why ‘Black Adam’ Was Delayed

A while back fans were disappointed to learn that the DC Extended Universe film slate was hit with quite a few big delays, sending films previously dated to release this year like The Flash and Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom into 2023. One casualty fans felt was the delay of Black Adam, a film that had been stuck in development hell for quite some time and was finally close to releasing. It was initially dated for July 27th, 2022 but was sent back a few months to October 21st, 2022 and now we finally know why.

Producer on the film, Hiram Garcia, has revealed just why Black Adam would not be making its previously dated July release date. Garcia stated that due to the pandemic there became such a backlog of work for VFX studios that they would not be able to complete work on the film in time for the set date.

I think we’re just in a world right now where there was a huge and understandable freeze-up when the pandemic hit and a lot of productions were put on hold, Now that the industry has really roared back, the pipeline for VFX is so jammed. Obviously all these superhero movies just require so much VFX, and we’re just in a situation where the majority of the VFX houses are just completely swamped with work.

    Hiram Garcia

Garcia went on to talk about how well the film was coming together and just how grateful they are for the VFX talent they have working on the project.

They’re busting their ass and we’re so grateful for all those VFX houses, It feels like things are starting to calibrate and I think you’ll start to feel less shifts down the line. We’re excited about it and we’re really excited with the way the movie’s been looking and excited to finish it and get it out into the world.

    Hiram Garcia

Fans will have to wait just a little bit longer to witness the debut of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as Black Adam, but they wanna make sure it’s well worth the wait and the best film it can be. Hopefully, this news will help ease some tension amongst fans who were worried about its delay.
