  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Off to a Strong International Start, Eyeing $300M+ Opening Weekend

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Off to a Strong International Start, Eyeing $300M+ Opening Weekend

Well, the numbers are certainly showing an impressive start for the third entry in the MCU Spider-Man franchise. While Far From Home was the first to break the $1 billion milestones, it seems like No Way Home is going to follow shortly after. It already was proving its potential through its record-breaking pre-sales, its rollout in international markets is continuing that very trend. Deadline first reported that it already grossed $5.28M in Korea, which puts it 11% ahead of 2019’s Far From Home release, which was the film’s second-biggest market behind China. It’s also dominating France and will release in select markets as of Friday, such as the Netherlands, India, Germany, and more.

Some markets are even accommodating their release windows, such as the Netherlands opening early due to a 5 PM curfew. U.S. numbers haven’t arrived yet, but it seems that it made around $50M+ in its Wednesday previews alone and is definitely going to nab around $300M+ at this rate. Of course, COVID restrictions could become an influencing factor, as pointed out, but there’s always the potential it goes beyond it if it continues down this path. Overseas projects have it at $160M to $180M, but there’s potential to go higher if the pandemic codicils don’t hamper its development. Charlie Jatinder shared some insight into how the markets are performing:

Especially, the UK numbers are impressive, as it pulling in £7.2M in comparison to this year’s most successful release in the country, No Time to Die, managed to earn around £100M with an opening consisting of £4.5M. So, it looks like the film will definitely have strong legs internationally at this rate.

We’re still waiting for more data on how the domestic market has performed, but its Wednesday numbers are already quite impressive and signal good things. Even as the Omnicom scare is making the rounds, there’s still some hope that it’ll hold strong and we can expect a generally strong performance. Will it pass $1 billion? There’s some hope it might be the first to do so since the pandemic started, but we’ll have to see how its weekend starts developing as word-of-mouth spreads.

  • Sony Expecting a $150M Domestic Opening for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Sony Expecting a $150M Domestic Opening for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

We’ve been covering the box office for quite some time now. It’s been a rough year with the pandemic closing down cinemas for extended periods. After 2020, the new year started with a bang as Godzilla vs. Kong, F9: The Fast Saga and Black Widow started the return for the local box office to recover. So far, only Venom: Let There Be Carnage managed to inch close to it with around $90M in October. It seems like Spider-Man: No Way Home is pretty much set to break pandemic records, but it seems there’s some debate between predictions.

Sony seems to be taking a more conservative route, which makes sense. You never know how the box office may play during these uncertain times. As such, Sony is going in with a more conservative approach and predicting the film will make at least $100M with a potential high at around $150M. If you remember, we’ve shared predictions that saw the film even managing upward of $250M even during earlier predictions. Exhibitor Relations’ Jeff Bock, a senior analyst, believes that the impressive aspect will be its legs going into the new year:

Spider-Man: No Way Home’ isn’t just the most anticipated movie of the holiday season, it’s the most anticipated movie of the year. As we’ve seen from countless other superhero flicks in 2021, audiences will not only break the box office opening weekend, but have legs for months

    Jeff Bock

Some time ago, early predictions and pre-sales already had the film en route to pass the $200M benchmark, which would be quite impressive even during non-pandemic times. Spider-Man: Homecoming made $117M back in 2017 with Spider-Man: Far From Home gaining $92M. Yet, even with a weaker opening weekend, the film managed to surpass the previous entry and even race past the $1B mark. Still, in these times it’s difficult to say if No Way Home would even manage a similar feat. You can be sure everyone’s going to keep a close eye on its release.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Eyeing $250M+ Domestic Opening Weekend

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Eyeing $250M+ Domestic Opening Weekend

Currently, Spider-Man: No Way Home is beating all expectations. Even while some are cautious about the new Omnicom variant, its box office performance has been nothing but stellar. Its pre-sales were on par or slightly behind 2019’s Avengers: Endgame in key markets. Even without a China release, the film is pretty much on route to beat any release since the pandemic started and even rivals those of 2019. With 10 more days until release, the numbers are looking better than ever.

Charlie Jatinder, who has been a reliable source for box office insight, shared that the film has already sold around $60M in pre-sales tickets in its domestic market. As such, while including $40M for its opening day, it would set the film on opening at around $200M or even $240M over the weekend. With international developments, the film might even manage a $500M opening worldwide.

These numbers also match with Box Office pro’s prediction that has given the film a higher fluctuation rate in its release, as they believe it could even go up to $250M. We’ve seen a few films break even their best predictions while some also barely scratched it. In these uncertain times, it’s a bit hard to define, but with some strong momentum, it could even manage upwards of $690M in its worldwide release. We’ll see how its critical reception and word-of-mouth strengthen those numbers moving forward.

  • ‘Encanto’ Leads Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office After Tight Race with ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’

‘Encanto’ Leads Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office After Tight Race with ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’

The numbers are finally in for the weekend, as Encanto has taken the top spot for the weekend with $40.3M over 5-days. It’s noticeable that 52% of its cume is from Latino and Hispanic audiences. Internationally, the animated Disney film kicked off with $70M. Ghostbusters: afterlife was the film’s biggest competition with a strong $35.3M weekend. As Deadline points out, their audiences had a strong crossover and may have taken a bite out of each other’s success over the weekend.

Technically, Encanto made $27M over three days. That is a tight race for the top spot if you discount the early release for the film. The positive aspect is that it proves families are slowly entering theaters more and more again. Universal and Illumination have high hopes for the upcoming December release of Sing 2 that has a similar audience structure. Still, it was a mellow weekend overall which was down quite a bit in comparison to pre-pandemic numbers.

Still, House of Gucci was the first drama to really find an audience over the weekend, as it had the highest opening for a drama with $14.2M in three days, even growing to $21.8M in five. For comparison’s sake, as Deadline points, we haven’t had a strong drama opening since 2910’s Little Women over Christmas. We’ll see if this is a sign that they will also see more recovery in the coming weeks.

  • ‘Encanto’ Tops the Thanksgiving Box Office

‘Encanto’ Tops the Thanksgiving Box Office

Disney’s Encanto is number one at the box office.

The numbers are beginning to roll in and it looks like Disney’s Encanto will take the top spot at the box office this weekend. The film pulled in $11 million on Friday, with its 3-day settling around $30 million with the potential to reach $45 million over the Thanksgiving weekend. While that’s not a huge opening compared to life pre-Pandemic, the Thanksgiving box office is up from last year.

Expected to come in second place is Ghostbusters: Afterlife with $36.3 million. That’s with $9.75 million on Friday with $26 million for the weekend. That brings its domestic haul to approximately $88 million in its second outing. With little competition, Afterlife should go on to cross the $100 million domestic mark in the coming weeks. Following Afterlife is the newest release from Ridley Scott, House of Gucci, earning $22.5 million over the five day weekend.

Marvel Studios’ Eternals finishes in fourth place with $11 million, bringing its total to $150.3 million domestically. Finally, in fifth place is the latest Resident Evil movie: Welcome to Raccoon City. That film, unfortunately, looks to be a box office disaster with just $8.85 million over the Thanksgiving weekend.

  • ‘Encanto’ Eyeing Top Spot at the Box Office Over Thanksgiving Weekend

‘Encanto’ Eyeing Top Spot at the Box Office Over Thanksgiving Weekend

It looks like Encanto has taken the top spot over the Thanksgiving weekend with a Thursday preview earning of $5.8M. Though, while even House of Gucci is shaping up to be connecting with audiences with a strong showing of $3.4M in previews, it’s still a much weaker overall ticket sale in comparison to pre-COVID times. Still, Disney’s animated musical

Encanto is currently on its way towards a $13.3M cume by Friday, which puts it on a good track on a strong weekend. Especially with a softer Disney budget of $120M. Lady Gaga is also proving her box office prowess once more and could make the $75M quite a popular film. Dramas have been fighting their way through the box office since the pandemic, which makes sense as audiences are going to be way more selective in their viewing choices.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City also opened over the weekend and earned around $1M in its previews with a Friday gross of $3.5M expected. It’s a cheap production at around $25M but has not been strongly advertised and gone under most people’s radar up until its release. It’s still a bizarre decision by Sony not to invest in such an iconic gaming intellectual property that has proven successful in the past.

Still, Ghostbusters: Afterlife continues to pull in good numbers and now stands at $63.3M domestically. Eternals now stands at a still impressive $142.7M. While hard to compare to pre-pandemic times, the numbers are still there showing that people are slowly going back to cinemas and House of Gucci‘s performance might also add some hope that dramas are back in the upswing as well for stronger performances moving forward.

  • ‘Eternals’ En Route to Pass ‘Black Widow’s Global Box Office, Eyeing Potential $425M+ Run

‘Eternals’ En Route to Pass ‘Black Widow’s Global Box Office, Eyeing Potential $425M+ Run

There has been much discussion surrounding Eternals when it came to its measure of success. It hasn’t been accepted as much by critics as other films of the franchise and even got a B Audience Score which showed it was less the crowd-pleaser that many are accustomed to. Still, it opened to the fourth-biggest opening of 2021 and since the pandemic began. It did face a harsher drop in the second weekend but was on par with other recent releases like Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Still, it looks like the film is on track to pass Black Widow‘s worldwide box office.

The film officially passed the $300M mark over the weekend and already beat Free Guy’s global $331.4M cume. At this rate, it might pass Black Widow‘s $376M in the next few weeks Shang-Chi currently stands at $418M and there is a chance that the latest installment could pass that film’s box office if it hits the higher end of its speculated $445M global run. The film is carried by a very impressive international run and has seen some mid-week impressive numbers even with harsher drops on weekends. South Korea has been a strong market for the film with $21M and leading the international markets.

Even with some of the criticism surrounding the project, it does look like the film is still having an impressive box office run without a Chinese release. Spider-Man: No Way Home may be the first to get that release and many are predicting it’s going to be the first post-pandemic release to pass the billion mark. So, Marvel Studios is doing quite well even with the challenging situations posed by the pandemic.

  • ‘No Time to Die’ Now Hollywood’s Highest-Earning 2021 Release, Passes ‘F9’s Previous Record

‘No Time to Die’ Now Hollywood’s Highest-Earning 2021 Release, Passes ‘F9’s Previous Record

It looks like we have a new reigning king at the worldwide box office, as the latest James Bond film, No Time to Die, has officially outgrossed the reigning champ F9: The Fast Saga. The final entry in Daniel Craig‘s run as the famous secret agent has reached $733M worldwide. It’s a great success for MGM and Universal, who have postponed the film ever since the pandemic started and it gave it a nice boost once things calmed down a bit. To give a comparison, F9 currently stands at $721M.

It’s quite an impressive run for the older-skewing film like No Time to Die, which has currently outperformed quite a few Marvel films. Shang-Chi is currently still the top-grossing film in the domestic box office but had a slower development overseas. The franchise has always been strong in European markets, especially in its home country with the UK making up $124M of its income.

It had quite the boost when it was released and it even opened in China which added another $60M. Some of the top earners are the few that managed to get a greenlit by the Middle Kingdom while most of Marvel Studios releases did not get the same. Eternal and Shang-Chi both faced some cultural backlash which kept the films from banking on the usual reliable Chinese box. Still, it’s great to see Craig‘s exit as James Bond ends on a high note and we’ll see if Spider-Man: No Way Home might be the first to pass the billion mark since the pandemic opened.

  • Ghostbusters: Afterlife Set For $40.5 Million Opening

Ghostbusters: Afterlife Set For $40.5 Million Opening

The latest Ghostbusters film takes the top spot at this weekend’s box office.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife has proved there’s still life in the Ghostbusters franchise. The new installment, directed by Jason Reitman, is on track for a $40.5 million opening this weekend. That’s enough to give it the top spot at the box office. That total includes the $16.5 million it took on Friday, including Thursday previews. The film stars a young cast that includes Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and newcomer Logan Kim. Afterlife also sees the return of Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stantz, Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore and Bill Murray as Peter Venkman.

Coming in second place is Marvel Studios’ Eternals, which is expected to take in another $10.8 million in its third outing. That would bring the superhero flick to $135 million stateside. A couple of days ago, the film crossed the $300 million mark at the global box office, yet another major milestone for the latest Marvel Studios film.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Eternals are playing now exclusively in theaters.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Early Forecast Eyeing $500M+ Worldwide Opening

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Early Forecast Eyeing $500M+ Worldwide Opening

We’ve all been wondering if Spider-Man: No Way Home might be the first film to break the current curse the box office is facing with the pandemic. We’re far away from where we were back in 2019 but there’s a lot of hope that it may be our first film to pass the one billion mark at the worldwide box office. Its December release could also add a nice push, as the Star Wars franchise changed its potential and it became a popular hot spot for big releases. Its sentiment rankings are trending ahead of Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It also helped that the first trailer release garnered 355.5 million views within just 24 hours ahead of some of the franchise’s biggest. As such, the long forecast has the film eyeing an international release between $375M to $525M.

That means that domestically, it’s currently on route to near a $200M opening. This is quite noteworthy if you consider that no film has opened past the $100M mark since before the pandemic. For now, its prediction sets it between $135M to $185M. Its critical reception, as seen with Eternals, and general marketing push could push it even further, as Venom: Let There Be Carnage dips into the same target audience and managed to pass expectations by quite a bit.

Keep in mind, these are early predictions that offer a feeling for where the film might potentially be heading. We’re still about a month out and some countries are adding quarantine restrictions once again that could hamper its box office in specific countries. Yet, it‘s eyeing a release in China, which will give the film an extra boost. It seems unlikely it might reach the $2 billion mark but it might be the first one to break through the pandemic.
