    Zawe Ashton Set to Play the Antagonist in ‘Captain Marvel 2’

    Yesterday, The Illuminerdi broke the exclusive that there were 2 new roles headed for Captain Marvel 2. Marvel was reportedly looking to fill one of the roles with Zawe Ashton. Now, Deadline was able to confirm the Illuminerdi’s exclusive and provide additional details regarding her role. It seems that Ashton will be co-starring as the antagonist opposite to Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers. She will be joining the likes of Teyonah Parris, who plays Monica Rambeau in the MCU, and Iman Vellani, who will be taking up the role of Ms. Marvel. The film will be directed by Nia DaCosta.

     

    Now, who exactly Ashton will portray in this film remains to be seen. However, there certainly is a great interest to see what her character might be and how this film will connect and play out in the upcoming Phase 4 of the MCU. Given that this film is already set to have 3 powerful heroes, all of which have handled the “Marvel” mantle in the comics, I would not be surprised to see Ashton portray one of Captain Marvel’s greatest adversaries in the comics, Karla Sofen aka Moonstone. As I mentioned previously if your film is going to have 3 characters that have handled the “Marvel” mantle, why not introduce a villain who also posed with the Marvel mantle.

    Captain Marvel 2 is set to premiere in theaters November 11, 2022.

    ‘WANDAVISION’: 6 Reasons Why Monica Rambeau’s Phone-a-Friend is a Skrull

    WandaVision‘s Episode 5 was, for many, the best one yet as the show seems to be kicking into high gear for the final half of the season. The last couple of episodes have finally started to shed some light on some of its initial mysteries, but the show also keeps raising new questions to leave unanswered. One of those came up on the last episode when Monica and Darcy discussed what it would take to assemble a vehicle that would allow them to enter the Westview Anomaly without being affected by it. Rambeau immediately says:

    I know an aerospace engineer who’d be up for this challenge.

    That obviously begs the question: Who might that be? We’ve all read the crazy possibilities that started to make their way through social media and elsewhere: Reed Richards; Victor Von Doom; The Blue Marvel; Hank McCoy; Abigail Brand; Riri Williams. But let’s get serious for a second: besides Riri Williams (who will be played by Dominique Thorne in the upcoming Disney+ series Ironheart) none of these other characters have been cast yet and there is no official word of when and where they might be eventually introduced into the MCU. At the same time, introducing almost any of them in an episode of WandaVision would only distract us from the focus of the story being told, as we would all get drawn to those characters that are bound to become franchise staples within the next decade.

    So being, it would have to be someone a bit more lowkey, while being interesting enough so that the disclosure of the secret actually pays off. And in true MCU fashion (as WandaVision has been living proof of with Monica, Darcy, and Jimmy), if it happened to be someone we have already met in a past project, even better. Considering all of this, and a few more interesting facts we’ll get into ahead, the choice seemed logical: Talos’ daughter, the little girl that we met at the end of Captain Marvel.

    Now why does that seem like the logical choice, you ask? Here’s why.

    • She was raised by space-traveling aliens, and the Skrulls are a  far more advanced race than ours. It would take someone with that kind of background to turn Darcy’s theory into a reality.
    • Monica clearly says that she knows the person in question. Making it seem that it’s more of a personal connection and not so much a professional one. As we saw in Captain Marvel, Monica bonded with her, in the scene on the staircase when she said “You guys have the best eyes. Don’t ever change your eyes.”. As Maria probably stayed in contact with Talos even after he left earth, Monica could have easily done the same with his daughter. 
    • We know both Talos and his wife Soren eventually made it back to Earth, it’s likely their daughter came back as well. 
    • She’s someone only Monica would know off, and by making their connection essential to the story you also highlight Monica’s role in the show.
    • When Monica mentions “An engineer..” the Spanish subtitles show us “Una ingeniera..”, meaning that whoever Monica is talking about is female.
    • Almost a year ago there were reports of a casting call out for a male aged 16-23 “A Skrull hiding on earth under the protection of SWORD.” This obviously isn’t Talos’ daughter’s character but it does make it clear that Skrulls will appear on the show, so her appearance may have added context. By making it clear in episode 4 that Maria Rambeau, Monica’s mother, built S.W.O.R.D. from the ground up, and knowing how Maria came into contact with Skrull refugees in Captain Marvel, it would be fair to assume that she got S.W.O.R.D. to help them out and that Monica would be aware of that situation. Even if other operatives, such as Director Tyler Hayward, didn’t. After all, secrecy would be paramount in such a situation.

     

    All of this may end up being meaningless, but there sure are a lot of details hinting that this might be the person Monica refers to. Above all, it’s a simple enough answer that doesn’t need too much explanation, much in the way of how Marvel Studios usually does these things. Both characters have a natural connection, one we’ve already seen on screen, and it won’t leave people clamoring for answers on who is this person, how did they meet each other, or how does she know so much about these specific subjects. Being Talos’ daughter people will get it all immediately, advancing the story without having to waste time explaining what people already know.

    How Monica Rambeau Will Influence ‘WandaVision’s Future Episodes

    After rewatching the latest episode of WandaVision, I’ve come to realize I never asked myself the question of why they decided to reintroduce Monica Rambeau in this story specifically. The character has close ties to Carol Danvers, but it seemed surprising they wanted to include her in a series focused on Wanda. Yes, it works to introduce an older version of the character played by Teyonah Parris, but something felt like it was missing. Advertisement showcased her as an essential character for the series. The moment the episode started, it suddenly clicked with me. At that very moment, I realized why exactly she is here and her importance moving forward into the rest of the season.

     

    I will be mainly spoiling the opening of this episode. If you are planning on going in without any spoilers then be sure to return to this article later. Otherwise, continue at your own risk.

     

     

    The episode opens up with Monica being blipped back into existence. She finds herself in a hospital where everyone is in disarray. Her priority is the empty bed beside her, as she tries to find out what happened to the person she was at the hospital. It turns out, her mother, Maria Rambeau, was fighting cancer. The surgery went well before she got snapped. It is heartbreaking when she finds out that her mother survived before facing a relapse two years later. We see her try to keep her composure, try to return to a normal life, and somehow move on with whatever happened to her. She returns to back to work and is ready to take on her old tasks again. Instead of falling into the tragedy, she accepts it and tries her best to move on.

     

     

    Her journey is a counterpoint to that what made Wanda bring Vision back to life. They both lost someone very dear to their heart, but one couldn’t let go. It leads to some questionable decisions that are still unknown in how far they go. Monica is here to become the emotional anchor that probably leads to the final decision of the show. Her experience of loss could help Wanda learn the same lesson. It is her chance to learn that forcing something to exist won’t make the pain go away. The ending of this episode highlights that aspect of her journey moving forward.

    We don’t know exactly where they are going with this yet, as we still have five more episodes to go. Monica is returning in Captain Marvel 2, so some story elements might get a focus later on. Still, the main character of this story is Wanda and her grief. It may also be what brought together an unlikely pairing of characters that would turn an entire town of New Jersey into a sitcom. Marvel Studios’ first venture into long-form storytelling feels unrestricted in many ways but still part of an ever-expanding franchise. I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for us in next week’s episode.

    Deep Thoughts: One Hypothetical Marvel Studios 2022 Release Calendar

    Earlier this week, we looked at one hypothetical 2021 release calendar for Marvel Studios. That possible calendar saw Hawkeye wrapped up on Christmas Eve 2021 and it seemed like a bad place to stop thinking. Following the same premise of trying to get new content out on as many Fridays as possible, here’s one totally made up and hypothetical way Marvel Studios could do that in 2022!

    ***NOTE***

    Please read and share responsibly and don’t latch your hopes and dreams onto this. Don’t take it seriously and don’t start marking your calendars. This is one possible option with the only real intention behind it being to see if it could be done well.

     

    After originally thinking Hawkeye would carry over into 2022, we learned that the series is only 6-episodes, meaning it will conclude on Christmas Eve 2021 and they’ll probably skip out on New Year’s Eve content. If we assume Marvel Studios follows a similar start to WandaVision in that it allows the studios to return from the 2-week holiday layoff, get whatever press events and social media teases up and running in the week leading up to release, the 2022 Marvel Studios onslaught will kick off on January 14th!

    She-Hulk is going to get to kick off 2022 in style. The Tatiana Maslany-led comedy series begins filming in Atlanta in March 2021 and could easily turn episodes around in time for a mid-January 2022 release. The series is filming for quite a long time and we’ve seen some information that leads us to believe they could be filming as many as 10 episodes next year. Whether that is one long season or two is unknown, but should it be one, long 10 episode season, it could run from January 14th until March 11th, which fits nicely in our big puzzle.

    Should Marvel Studios continue their Marvel Studios Legends series, they could stream a Doctor Strange episode the weekend of March 18th, one week ahead of the release of Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness. By the time this film comes out, it’ll have been 6 years since the first film and almost 3 years since we last saw the Sorcerer Supreme on the big screen, so it wouldn’t be the worst idea to catch fans up and tell the story to new audiences. We would also expect the final trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder and the first trailer for Black Panther II to be released ahead of this so theater audiences could preview them ahead of the film.

    The sledding gets a little rougher here with Moon Knight potentially running into the theatrical release of Thor: Love and Thunder. Thankfully, I am reminded that Season 1 of The Mandalorian took a Friday off so that audiences could head to theaters to catch The Rise of Skywalker (big high five to The Machine for helping me get out of my mental rut). That same idea could work here and who knows, maybe a film that includes a God Butcher could unexpectedly tie-in to a series about a guy working as the Earthly avatar of an Egyptian god…

     

    Thor: Love and Thunder promises to be an absolutely wild ride. Taika Waititi is back and has made no bones about the fact that he’s turning everything up on this one. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is the first Marvel Studios solo character to move beyond the trilogy structure meaning all bets are off. Natalie Portman returning as Jane Foster to become the Mighty Thor is the biggest news, but adding Academy Award Winner Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, bringing back Jamie Alexander as Lady Sif alongside Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie AND having the Guardians of the Galaxy along for the ride make this the studio’s biggest non-Avengers film to date.

    An episode of Marvel Studios Legends for Nick Fury and Talos seems like a must leading into Secret Invasion. We know Talos has posed as Fury in the past and it’d be alright if Marvel Studios cleared some of that up heading into Secret Invasion and that could stream on May 13th, one week after Thor 4 hits theaters.  Secret Invasion is still in the earliest stages of development, so there’s no word on an episode count, but for the purposes of this calendar, we’re sticking with the standard six; hypothetically, if Secret Invasion kicked off a six-week run on May 20th, it would conclude on June 24th, just ahead of Black Panther II.

     

    It’s still tough to think about a sequel to Black Panther happening without Chadwick Boseman, but Marvel Studios has a plan and a date. An episode of Marvel Studios Legends ahead of this film could serve not only as a tribute to Boseman, but also as a way to highlight whomever Marvel Studios has chosen to focus on from the World of Wakanda. Black Panther II is currently set to premiere on July 8th, which means it would be accompanied in theaters by trailers for Blade and Captain Marvel 2.

     

    While there was no direct indication that What If…? Season 2 would stream in 2022, Kevin Feige did mention in an interview in December of 2019 that they were already hard at work on the 10-episode second season. As was the case with What If…? Season 1, there’s no indication of whether or not Marvel Studios will stream a new episode of the animated series each week or drop them all at once, but given the nature of the premise is to slot new content on as many Fridays as possible, I’m going with the former.

    Like Moon Knight before it, Ironheart could be headed for a one-week hiatus to get Blade in theaters on October 7th (something that is yet to be announced by the studio but we’ve included in our little experiment). Marvel Studios could get Riri Williams’ story started on September 23rd and 30th before taking the week of October 7th off for Blade.

    Though there’s no word on when Blade would hit theaters, the official Disney Investor Day Fact Sheet lists it chronologically ahead of Captain Marvel 2 and Disney still has the October 7, 2022 date set aside for a Marvel Studios project. With those things in mind and for the purpose of our hypothetical calendar, we are putting Blade right here.

    Ironheart returns from its one-week hiatus and jumps back into action, concluding its run with a 4-episode stretch from October 14th through November 4th.

    Following the pattern of Marvel Studios preparing audiences for the return of popular characters through episodes of Marvel Studios Legends, a Captain Marvel episode could stream on November 4th. With Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan joining Carol Danvers in the film, a Legends episode could prove pretty useful to catch fans up to speed ahead of the November 11th debut of Captain Marvel 2.

    While he’s never been the centerpiece of his own project, James Rhodes has been in 7 Marvel Studios films. His story is one worth recapping in a War Machine episode of Marvel Studios Legends on November 18th one week before he takes the lead in Armor Wars!

    Breaking from the mold just a little here, the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special can debut on Thanksgiving, which is the kickoff of the U.S. holiday season.

    Boom, you looking for this! The final Marvel Studios project of 2022, Armor Wars, could begin its six-week run on November 25th and run right up until the final Friday of the year on December 30th.

    Piecing this one together meant taking quite a few liberties, including adding a film that has not officially been given a date. But again, the working premise here was to get new Marvel Studios content on as many Fridays as possible. As things developed, keeping streaming series from dropping new episodes on the same days as films would make their theatrical debuts became a secondary concern and that meant having to color outside of the lines a few times. However, it looks like we mish-mashed together a way to get 51 weeks of Marvel Studios content in 2022!

    ‘Fortnite’ Leaks Reveal Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Green Arrow & More

    Looks like the current season is taking skins from all over the multiverse, as recent leaks for Fornite have revealed a variety of new skins joining this season. During the Game Awards, they revealed Halo‘s Master Chief and two characters from The Walking Dead were joining. Many wondered if we would also see more skins from Marvel after they took over the last season. Well, it looks like they weren’t quite done yet, as a group of well-known Fortnite hackers took to Twitter to share a variety of new skins showing off Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and even a comic-accurate Taskmaster.

    That is not all, as we also got the reveal for a DC skin based on the popular CW show Arrow will be included in the game based on Stephen Amell‘s iconic rendition. We also get a good look at the entire set, which reveals the character’s iconic punching arrow and a quiver.

    Fornite has been turning into a center for pop culture. This season also saw the addition of Kratos and The Mandalorian‘s Din. So, we can expect a lot more appearances throughout this season. Nintendo fans are hoping for the potential addition of Samus Aran from Metroid. She would make complete sense within the wacky Battle Royale world, and it seems there are no limits on who they might include at this point. So, whoever had their fantasy of having Stephen Amell‘s Green Arrow take on Deadpool can do so now. Now that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate announced Sephiroth as their next DLC character, could we see Sora end up on Fornite?

    You may have noticed us branching out on the site more and more over recent months. Today, we are putting out the first of what we hope to be MANY unboxing/opening videos! As many of you know, I am an over-zealous collector so we decided it would be pretty easy to share with you all.

    As you’ll see, Charles V., who edited the video, put a couple of his own touches on the video below. I was lucky enough to get Arlyn Murphy to help me out with this one and I hope that, over time, she takes over the narration.     The Underwhelming Use of Songs in ‘CAPTAIN MARVEL’

    Twenty-three movies in and there have been some incredible composers lending their talent to the Infinity Saga’s theatrical releases, from Ramin Djawadi (Game of ThronesWestworld) to Alan Silvestri (Back to The FuturePredator) and Michael Giacchino (LostThe Incredibles). Also, the brilliant Ludwig Göransson (set to return to score season 2 of The Mandalorian), who had an amazing 2019 as his work on the Black Panther soundtrack and Donald Glover‘s This Is America gained him both popular and critical acclaim as well as an Academy Award and a couple of Grammys to go with it.

    But even though the MCU has tried to follow a somewhat more classical path when it comes to its soundtracks, with orchestral leitmotifs throughout, there have been several movies where songs, not the score, have taken a step forward and gained significant importance to the plot and the characters themselves. I mean, little did we know that the use of ACϟDC’s “Back in Black” (1980) in the very first scene of the very entry in the franchise would have such an emotional pay-off more than eleven years later as it springboarded Spider-Man back into action. “I LOVE LED ZEPPELIN!”

    But it was 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy that became the epitome of song usage in the MCU, something made very clear from it’s first few minutes. We got to see the young Peter Quill listening to 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love” (1975) outside his mother’s hospital room to try and cope with the weight of the moment, and then his older self dancing through a Morag temple while singing along to “Come and Get Your Love” (1974) by Redbone, in stark contrast to the eeriness around him. We later learned that the songs Quill kept with him were part of a mix-tape his mother gifted him with her favorite songs from the 60s and 70s. For him, those songs became an escape, something to brighten up his days, a constant presence in his life, a reminder of better times, and a way to keep his mother’s memory alive. And since music mattered so much to Quill, at such a raw and relatable level, it became relevant to the audience as well. The same happened in the previously mentioned scene from Spider-Man: Far From Home, when the audience likely mimicked Happy Hogan’s reaction, in all its nuanced glory. And this is when you know that the use of songs, often a gimmick to shoehorn a random ambiance in specifics scenes, is adding to the story in a way that feels earned.

    By choosing such a specific timeline to introduce Carol Danvers, it was obvious from the start that Captain Marvel would try banking on 90s nostalgia. The very first trailer started with Vers crashing into a Blockbuster and the callbacks were omnipresent throughout the movie itself. Giant cell-phones, pagers, and dial-up internet made for an inverted technology shock, as both Carol and the audience had to adapt to such an archaic landscape. But even with all these references, the real hook was to be the music. As James Gunn realized, that’s where the emotional response from the audience could easily pay dividends later on. By adding that extra level of relatability to Carol it could help make the character even a bigger fan favorite than she ended up being. But even though the songs were there it all felt a bit disconnected both because of the way they were used and Danvers’ (non-)reactions to them. It all made for a somewhat disappointing experience since it had the potential to become something truly magnificent, perhaps even surpassing the response to Guardians’ accomplishments in this specific area.

    The approach seems to have been to simply insert 90s songs into the movie, highlighting their presence and trying to get an audience reaction, but sadly bypassing their importance to the characters. As co-director Anna Boden stated during an interview with AMC:

     

    We can’t compete with Guardians of the Galaxy. [That] was its own special thing. But we do have a movie that takes place in the 90s, and you will hear some 90s music, hopefully stuff that reminds you of the past. We’re playing a lot with songs that we forgot about or just haven’t heard in a long time, but that really bring us back to a certain moment.

     

    Guardians was clearly something special. But not trying to accomplish something equally noteworthy seems to have been the first step to not getting there in the first place. Most of the song choices were from the 1992-1995 era, being R.E.M.’s “Man On The Moon” (1992) one of the earlier releases but seeing that Carol had left Earth in 1989 this meant that there would be no reason for her to have any sort of connection to them. When they showed up in the movie it always felt a bit bland. The audience could even be connecting with the songs, but once the main character felt so removed from them that could even almost retract that initial nostalgic feeling. There wasn’t even really any effort to try and make Carol connect with them, since she never really acknowledged the ones that happened to be playing in the background. This all felt a bit out of character since throughout the movie, and if you leave out the Air Force Flightsuit and her Kree uniform, she basically is just seen wearing shirts with band logos on them, from Nine Inch Nails to Guns N’ Roses and Heart, meaning she wasn’t oblivious to the art form.

    The final confrontation with the Supreme Intelligence late in the movie, just before Carol goes Binary for the first time, always felt like the perfect example of the way musical callbacks were mishandled. This was an interface where, as stated in the movie, characters mostly only found what they took there, so there would be little point in having Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” (1992) playing since Carol probably didn’t even know the band, that was just releasing their first album at the time she was abducted. And even if you could argue that it was the Supreme Intelligence the one responsible for choosing the song, that wouldn’t be that intelligent as the eventual reaction it was trying to get out of Carol would be as empty as the lies she kept in her mind.

    Halfway through the movie, the scene where Fury meets up with Carol at Pancho’s Bar makes for a great metaphor for the way songs were used in the movie. When asked to prove she isn’t a Skrull, and without blinking, Carol’s choice is to blow up a jukebox using a photon blast. The same jukebox that probably provided her numerous nights of entertainment at that same bar with Maria Rambeau, as we caught a glimpse through flashbacks. If music was supposed to help with her amnesia and help to bring the old Carol back, if it was supposed to bring the audience closer together to relive the 90s through her eyes, it just died a very painful death. With a photon blast to the face.

    New Evidence Links ‘Grass-Fed Productions’ to Marvel Studios

    As mentioned in this piece, Murphy’s Multiverse was able to independently confirm that Captain Marvel 2 has been registered in the UK. While searching for information on that, something even more interesting came to the surface…Grass-Fed Productions is also registered in the UK with the paperwork signed by none other than Marvel Studios representatives. So, as speculated on the other day, Grass-Fed is a Marvel Studios production. A lot of people doubted it; I’ll admit it even made me doubt myself, but the evidence is clear at this point.

    Avengers 4: Has the MCU been planning a Secret Invasion all along ...

    What does all this mean and how does it tie into the earlier report on Captain Marvel 2? As of now, the next property set to film in the UK is Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness and it’s probably closer to getting off the ground than we think. The leaked audition video for America Chavez was a couple of weeks old and the fact that is was, for a time, publicly available almost certainly means that the actress who posted it was informed she did not get the role. Now that doesn’t mean that someone has, but it does mean they’re down the road a bit in that process, so I wouldn’t be shocked if they found the right actress for the role. Should the Strange sequel be able to start by November or so, it could wrap up by next March or April (the original shoot was set for April/May-August and we can expect that productions might take a bit longer now). Captain Marvel 2 is probably going to film in the UK after Strange is done, so it could get started as soon as May of next year and finish around September. From there, they likely move on to whatever film Grass-Fed Production is and that could start production in or around October of 2021. So what film could it be?

    The other day, I speculated on the possibility that it might be either Blade or the Secret Invasion project that Marvel Studios is developing. If you’re curious, you can read the reasoning behind those guesses here. My gut instinct is that this is Blade because it’s the only other “announced” Marvel Studios project for which there is no known production company, but another interesting possibility has come to light in the past few days.

    Earlier this week, it was revealed that Sony had brought Olivia Wilde on board to helm their Spider-Woman project. The rights to the character are split between Sony and Marvel Studios so, without getting into too much detail, the character can’t be fully realized in a project unless the two studios cooperate on the production, similarly to how they’ve worked on Spider-Man. As explained more here, Amy Pascal and Rachel O’Connell, who both worked with Marvel Studios on the first two Spider-Man films, are producing Spider-Woman, so until we have it clarified by one studio or the other, fans of the character are holding out hope that the studios will play nice, work together and set the film firmly in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, just like Tom Holland’s Spidey, with the possibility of telling other stories in whatever Sony’s universe is.

    But how do you get from “Grass-Fed” to Spider-Woman? It’s actually not as big of a leap as you might think. As one of my Twitter followers pointed out earlier in the week, Jessica Drew was actually raised by one of the High Evolutionary’s New Men, Bova, a cow evolved into a highly-intelligent humanoid. Bova cared for Jessica until she was a teenager and then placed her in an orphanage where Jessica stayed until her own adventures began. Drew’s origin has been retconned several times and, if this is a Marvel Studios project, there’s no telling which origin they’d use or if they’d include Bova, but the subtlety of the reference and not knowing whether or not they’d tell this story does not mean they wouldn’t jokingly reference it while naming the production company.

    Canonically, both Blade and Jessica Drew were born in the UK and spent time all over Europe, so filming out of the UK would give the production crews easier access to a lot of European locations, rather than flying back and forth from America, and give either film a more authentic feel. At a time where travel isn’t quite as easy as it once was, that probably matters. If we follow the timeline I laid out above, Blade would seem to make the most sense given that it would line up for an October 2022 release and Marvel Studios still has a date set aside there; however, don’t forget that prior to COVID altering everything, Sony had planted a flag for an Untitled Marvel project on October 8, 2021 and some speculation at the time centered on that being Spider-Woman. And yes, even though Spider-Woman would be a Sony film, it would be a Marvel Studios production which means they would register the production company like the did for Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, though Sony would chose the date for the film.

    Unfortunately, we don’t have enough information at the moment, but given Sony’s recent movement, it’ll be informative if Marvel Studios follows suit at some point over the next few weeks.

    The sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel could well be shooting in the UK next year. After being tipped off that the studio had registered a production company in the UK, Murphy’s Multiverse was able to independently confirm that Marvel Studios had indeed done so, indicating that the studio has plans to at least shoot part of the film in the UK and/or Europe.

    The film, which will be directed by Nia DaCosta and based off a script from Megan McDonnell, is expected to tie into the Marvel Comics Secret Invasion event that saw the Skrull Empire attempt a hostile take over of Earth and revealed that Skrull sleeper cells had been on Earth in positions of power and in place of Earth’s mightiest heroes for some time. Marvel Studios is also developing a Secret Invasion project would could serve as a companion piece as a streaming series on Disney Plus or, perhaps, be its own event film.

    Captain Marvel filmed in California, under the California Film Commission’s Tax Credit Program, and in New Orleans with a post-credit scene being filmed in Atlanta. Captain Marvel 2 is set to debut in theaters on July 8, 2022 and should go into production late next Spring or early next Summer.

    ‘Captain Marvel’ Script Originally Included Talos’ Death

    It’s always fascinating how much films change throughout productions. While the scripts originally plan out the entire story, changes are still going to happen. This could either be the actor’s performance or just some pacing issues fixed through re-shoots. Looks like one change actually saved a fan-favorite character from Captain Marvel a gruesome fate. It is none other than the Skrull Talos.

    The character played by Ben Mendelsohn had some of the best lines in the film. It also was really clever casting by Marvel Studios. He is known for his villainous roles, so it was a nice twist when he turned out to be a decent person in a terrible war. As a bonus, he made a surprise cameo at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home teasing more of the character in the future. In an interview with NME, the actor revealed that Talos was originally going to die in the film.

    “That truly exceeded my expectations. [Talos] was gonna die at around page 60 [in the script] originally and he survived that, so he’s done pretty well. And if that fucking shapeshifter rears his ugly head again, I’ll do my best to be inside it.”

    It was a great decision to keep him around. Especially the enthusiasm that Mendelsohn has for returning in future projects. If the Far From Home post-credit scene is anything to go by, we will see quite a bit more of him in the future. He will most likely be an integral character throughout the rumored Secret Invasion plotline for Captain Marvel 2. There was even the rumor that the storyline would get its very own show. It would be cool to explore a Skrull invasion from the point-of-view of a Skrull, who lived alongside humans. Talos being torn between his own alien race and his friends could make for a great story.
