    Matt Reeves Shares How Nirvana Inspired ‘The Batman’s Script

    There are always some surprising influences on various projects. Sometimes a music cue or even a painting could become the center point of one’s approach to storytelling. In the case of The Batman‘s director Matt Reeves, it seems that his biggest influence was the music by Nirvana. It seems that the songs and lead singer Kurt Cobain became a main point of influence while writing his take on the Caped Crusader, who will be played by Robert Pattinson. He goes on to say that:

    Early on, when I was writing, I started listening to Nirvana, and there was something about [Nevermind song] ‘Something in the Way’, which is in the first trailer, which is part of the voice of that character. When I considered, ‘How do you do Bruce Wayne in a way that hasn’t been seen before?’ I started thinking, ‘What if some tragedy happened and this guy becomes so reclusive, we don’t know what he’s doing? Is this guy some kind of wayward, reckless, drug addict?’ And the truth is that he is a kind of drug addict. His drug is his addiction to this drive for revenge. He’s like a Batman Kurt Cobain.

    As he points out, the song was a highlight of the initial trailer that was revealed during DC FanDome. It set quite a tone, as we got our first true look at the film’s new take of the Dark Knight and its detective noir storytelling. It’ll be interesting to see if we see any of Nirvana’s songs scattered across the film’s now confirmed 3-hour runtime. As such, we get the longest entry in the iconic comic book adaptation with the most unique take on the franchise.

    Ivory Aquino Confirmed as Alysia Yeoh in ‘Batgirl’

    Even as cameras are rolling on the upcoming Batgirl solo film in Glasgow, thw cast continues to grow. A ton of set photos have made their way online recently, giving us countless new looks at the set and Batgirl herself. Photos last week revealed that actress Ivory Aquino looked to be a part of the film, as she was seen in many scenes with Leslie Grace. We first reported on these photos and speculated that Aquino could be playing the role of Alysia Yeoh.

    Variety has confirmed that Aquino is indeed playing the role of Yeoh, Barbara Gordon’s best friend and roommate. The character was created by Gail Simone and Adrian Syaf, first appearing in Batgirl Volume 4 issue #1. It was first speculated that Yeoh could be playing a role in the film when the project was casting an Asain transgender actress under the name of “Alanna”. It seems like the project could be setting up a strong friendship between the two.

    Aquino is best known for her work in When We Rise and Tales of the City. This will be her first role in a comic book film and will also be the first transgender character in the DC Extended Universe.

    Batgirl currently has no set release date but is slated to release sometime in 2022.

    Robert Pattinson Offers His Take on ‘The Batman’s No-Kill Rule

    Robert Pattinson is the next in line to bring the Caped Crusader to life. There have been many before, but each one has always added something unique to the character. In an interview with the magazine Presente, the actor talked about his take on the character in March’s The Batman, as well as offering some insight into his take on the DC icon’s essential “no-kill” rule. In the interview, he went on to offer two perspectives on it.

    There is this rule with Batman: he must not kill. It can be interpreted in two ways. Either he only wants to inflict the appropriate punishment, or he wants to kill and his self-control prevents him from doing so.

    The actor goes on to point out that he took that rule to heart when approaching the action sequences, as that limitation he set upon himself also becomes an essential aspect in how he takes on the crime in Gotham.

    I imagined it that way from the rehearsal of the first fight, I thought it was funnier: something in him just wanted to slit the guy’s throat! I told myself that if he spends his nights chasing criminals, it is impossible that he does not take pleasure in it. He suffers and it is a desire that overwhelms him. And by dint of knocking, his mind clears, he calms down, he reaches a state close to plenitude. I’m sure in this first fight, he manages to convince himself that every guy in front of him is the one who killed his mother (Laughs.) And so that allows him to vent all his rage.

    It’s not an uncommon interpretation, as some versions of the character always pointed out that killing is just the easy way out, such as in Batman: Under the Red Hood. With all his gadgets and training, he could easily kill his enemies. Even Christopher Nolan’s version of the character had revisited that very concept when he’s confronted with the choice next to Ra’s Al Ghul. Pattinson‘s version sounds to have a much darker core, which matches the fact he has the gun that killed his parents on his chest at all times.

    New ‘Batgirl’ Set Video Teases Her Investigation of a Murder Case

    It’s still insane just how much we’ve seen from Batgirl‘s sets over the course of the last few weeks. Once the cameras started rolling, we’ve somehow gotten quite a good look at the DC film that introduces Leslie Grace as the iconic member of the Batfamily. We still know very little about the film outside of Brendan Fraser‘s joining the production as the Batman villain Firefly. There’s always a chance that something bigger is at play, and a new set video reveals she’s investigating a cover-up of a murder. She references someone that killed an innocent woman, and it’s uncertain if this might be in reference to Firefly or someone else, but one thing is for sure: murder is afoot in Gotham.

    We know that the series takes heavy inspiration from Batgirl of Burnside, where she becomes a popular hero until someone from her past starts trying to tear it down. It’s uncertain how much they’ll take from that story – outside of the obvious visual references of her costume – but they may be adding a spin to the story. Batman may also have a role in the story, who may become a confidant throughout her investigation. Firefly seems like the obvious choice to be behind these events but he’s an arsonist and not a murderer. Plus, Fraser has become knwon for playing loveable yet flawed characters. There’s a chance his addition might be a bit of a red herring.

    The DCEU Can Shine Even Without Superman and Batman

    Quite recently the internet has been ablaze with rumors and reports regarding the future of the DC Extended Universe. They have stated that Batman and Superman would essentially have no role in the DCEU moving forward. Michael Keaton might take on a role similar to Nick Fury in the early days of the MCU. Their original roles will be taken over by Batgirl and Supergirl of the trinity. While it seems like there’s a bit of uncertainty on what’s to become of the DCEU, I don’t think all is lost. In fact, I feel like there’s even more potential now than there was ever before.

    Obviously, Batman and Superman are essential characters to the comics mythos. They are the literal pillars of the DC Universe across all mediums, and rightfully so. Luckily the characters will live on in multiple other projects like Matt Reeves‘ The Batman, Batman: The Caped Crusader, My Adventures With Superman, Superman and Lois, as well as whatever DC has planned. The two aren’t completely gone from DC’s cinematic future. As such, they can continue to exist in their own separate projects while minor characters get a chance to shine in a connected DCEU.

    That is exactly why we shouldn’t look at this as the end but rather as an opportunity. In this instance, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has proven how a franchise can build itself without some of its most iconic characters. Yes, there have been comparisons when people pointed out that the DCEU went a little too fast so that they could catch up with the MCU, but in this case, they should take a page out of their book. With this new direction, they may be unshackled like Marvel Studios once was.

    The Marvel Cinematic Universe was able to build without its pillar characters, as back in 2008 they only had limited access to their roster of characters. As such, the MCU was forced to start without the likes of Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and even the X-Men. They couldn’t access these characters that put them on the map. Instead, they worked with what was available at their disposal and built a universe with the likes of Iron Man, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Vision, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and many more. While it seems difficult to imagine a world without them, they weren’t well-known at that time.

    The DCEU has a chance to dig through its incredibly rich roster of characters and give the spotlight to those that would’ve otherwise never gotten the chance. Marvel is at a place now where they can introduce characters like the Eternals, Echo, Shang-Chi, and many more to their universe and instantly turn them into household names. Even Moon Knight just recently had more views within the first 24 hours than series like Hawkeye, WandaVision, and even Loki. These are all characters that became fan-favorites after being part of the franchise for years, and this new character managed to outperform them.

    So, even if the future for Batman and Superman in the DCEU is uncertain, this isn’t something to fear but rather embrace. These two characters have such a strong place in the cinematic consciousness of the public. They aren’t dependent on the rest, especially with Reeves‘ plans of building an entire universe based solely on Batman. So, the DCEU can reestablish itself and become even more interconnected as minor characters get their time to shine. We’re already seeing the new direction with projects on Black Adam, Blue Beetle, and more. This is just the beginning of a brighter future.

    Director Matt Reeves Teases ‘The Batman’ as ‘Almost a Horror Movie’

    The Batman is about to reintroduce the world to the vastness that is the Caped Crusader’s range of interpretation. We had hyper surrealism with Christopher Nolan‘s take and a gothic look at the series with Tim Burton. Director Matt Reeves will introduce a new introduction that seems to dive deeper into the detective side of the character. However, it seems that we might expect a much darker take on the character with what he is describing as “almost a horror movie, and a thriller” in an interview with MovieMaker. In his full quote, he states:

    This idea of a place that is corrupt, and you try to swim against the tide in order to fight against it and make a difference, is quintessential Batman. And at the center of those noir stories is almost always the detective, right? And that’s why he is the world’s greatest detective. And so this story is, in addition to being almost a horror movie, and a thriller, and an action movie, at its core, it’s also very much a detective story. It’s very narrative.

    It’s been a long-running joke that almost everyone is corrupt in Gotham. Outside of a few good eggs, most everyone falls to the temptation of some kind, may it be the amount of mafioso that live in the city or how many cops take payments. Nolan’s take in The Dark Knight explored that aspect through the eyes of Harvey Dent, but it seems we’ll get a much darker look at Gotham’s corruption and the horrors that are lurking in the dark. The fact that the Riddler is inspired by the Zodiac killer probably should’ve been our first hint that something sinister is heading our way..

    ‘The Batman’s Eyeing a 3-Hour Runtime

    It looks like Matt Reeves is all in with his upcoming adaptation of The Batman, as a Czech film distribution site has confirmed the long-rumored three-hour runtime for the latest adaptation featuring the Dark Knight. Robert Pattinson‘s take on the character will run for 176 minutes, or around 2 hours and 55 minutes according to the site, which was first shared on Reddit in the form of a distribution list. What makes this so noteworthy is that this makes the film the longest in the Batman franchise. THR has now confirmed the runtime in a new piece.

    The upcoming DC film, which will premiere on March 4th, is the second-longest entry in the franchise, as it’s only beaten out by Zack Snyder’s Justice League with its 4+ hour runtime. It’s even longer than the recently released Eternals, which had quite a bit of discussion surrounding its extended runtime. Reeves is very thorough in how he approaches his films, and its length may reflect just how dense the project ended up being. The central mystery might unravel in interesting ways that are only hinted at in the trailers.

    Latest ‘Batgirl’ Photos Offer First Look at Brendan Fraser on Set

    There was a barrage of news on Batgirl in the last week. Every day brought more and more set photos from the film. Production is currently underway in Glasgow where the city has been transformed into Gotham City. We’ve got some pretty good looks at the cast, which included Leslie Grace, Jacob Scipio, Ethan Kai, and the potential reveal of Ivory Aquino‘s involvement. Still, we haven’t seen J.K. Simmons, Michael Keaton, or Brendan Fraser. Luckily, the latest set photos managed to give us one more first look.

    The latest batch of set photos features Fraser in casual clothing walking out of a building overflowing with smoke. He was cast as a familiar Batman villain Garfield Lynns, who is better known as the arsonist Firefly. While we don’t have our first look at him in his costume, the photos are our first hint.

    The film seems to be adapting aspects from Batgirl: Year One and Batgirl of Burnside. Although there doesn’t seem to be any current word on if Firefly will be joined by any other villains like Killer Moth, as he was the reason Lynns became Firefly in the original comic. We’ll see if any more set photos might offer a clearer picture of where this story is heading. Batgirl currently has no set release date as production rages on over in Glasgow. The film will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah with Leslie Grace starring as the titular hero.

    3-Issue ‘The Flash’ Prelude Comic to Release Ahead of Film’s November Premiere

    It’s going to be a big year for the DC Extended Universe, as there are quite a few projects in some form of development. Among them is the multiversal storyline of The Flash, which may rewrite the DCEU as we know it. Ezra Miller is set to return in the titular role, as he meets up with a new yet familiar face in the form of Michael Keaton‘s Bruce Wayne. We still know very little about the film’s plot, but it seems we might get some new information as of April in the form of a prelude comic series.

    Writer Kenny Porter and artist Ricardo López Ortiz will tackle a three-issue comic series that’ll release monthly. The series titled The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive will tell the story of his conflict with a villain named Girder. He ends up learning how to take on this threat under the watchful eye of the Dark Knight, as he tries to face the metallic threat.

    The first issue will release on April 26th and consists of 48 pages. The collection of all three issues will be made available in October ahead of the film’s release in November. The main cover will be drawn by Max Fiumara with a variant cover by the film’s director, Andy Muschietti. Juan Ferreyra will prepare the cover for the second entry and the final issue will be by Jason Howard in July.

    Jensen Ackles Teases Development on a Secret DC Project

    Jensen Ackles is hot off the success of his long-running series Supernatural. He currently is set to appear in Amazon Prime’s critically acclaimed satire of the superhero genre, The Boys, where he’ll take a very likely antagonistic role. He’s been openly campaigning for a DC role in the past, such as his famous photoshoot as Jason Todd a.k.a. Red Hood. In an interview with Michael Rosenbaum in his Inside of You podcast series, he revealed that he may currently be working on tackling a DC role in the near future.

    Well, there’s a DC property that I’m currently developing with Warner Bros. and some other good partners that I’ve got my fingers crossed for, but again I am not going to talk about it. You don’t want to jinx it.

    As he doesn’t give away what exactly they may be adapting, it may be his dream project as the future Red Hood. The Flash is rumored to reimagine the DCEU and it would open up the possibility for Ackles to take on the role of his dreams. The way Rosenbaum asked him, he implied that it was about what role he’s always wanted to tackle and if this project becomes a reality – here’s hoping – he might finally manage to accomplish exactly that.
