RUMOR: ‘Batgirl’ May Have Already Cast Its Robin With Potential ‘Nightwing’ Spinoff In Mind

The Batgirl news is nonstop these days, as production begins to ramp in Glasgow. The city has been transformed into Gotham City once more for the upcoming HBO Max film. Just recently we saw quite a few interesting details from the set, one specifically featuring a mural depicting not only Batman but also Robin. The character’s future in the DCEU has been a bit questionable, as previous entries in the franchise hinted there was no active Robin. Yet, the multiversal shenanigans from The Flash may change that, as a new rumor has found its way online stating that Dick Grayson will make his debut in Batgirl.

MyTimeToShine, who we have previously reported one hinting at a soft-reboot of the DCEU, has shared that Warner Bros. has already found its choice to take on the role of Robin in the upcoming film. Not only that, but she also hints that Batgirl could possibly set up a Nightwing spinoff, which has been stuck on the back burner in DCEU’s infamous development hell for years.

This tweet also got the attention of KC Walsh, another source who provided quite a few insights in the past, who gave a rather curious response to highlight the statement. So, there might be more to this story.

Back in 2017, it was announced that the director of The Lego Batman Movie, Chris Mckay, would be directing a solo Nightwing film with Bill Dubuque set to write the script for the film. Like many other projects that spawned during the early days of the DCEU, it never went anywhere. The project was one of the few that even had someone attached to direct. Of course, there has not been an official word yet and so we still have to take it with a grain of salt for now.

  • Latest ‘Batgirl’ Set Photo Features a Nod to ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ Maxie Zeus Episode

Latest ‘Batgirl’ Set Photo Features a Nod to ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ Maxie Zeus Episode

Batman: The Animated Series is undoubtedly a pivotal and iconic part of Batman’s adaptation history. The series has provided some character best stories and introduced many to his extensive mythology. Its influence and relevance have never seemed to dwindle, as it continues to get referenced in films, series, and comics to this day. Some recent photos from the set of Batgirl in Glasgow feature a subtle nod to one particular episode, in particular, featuring one of Batman’s more obscure rogues known as Maxie Zeus.

we get a look at some more posters from the set with one, in particular, catching the eye of Batman: The Animated Series fans. The pink and black posters feature the name of a band known as “Fire From Olympus” the title of the 63rd episode from the series’ first season.

    https://twitter.com/wxhite_wxolf/status/1480925094767693824?s=21

The episode featured the origin of Maxie Zeus, a shipping magnate who believed that he was the reincarnation of the Greek god Zeus. Maxie’s company was in charge of shipping a powerful lightning weapon known as the Electronic Discharge Cannon for the government, but Maxie took the weapon for his own personal use after completely falling for his god complex.

The poster features a silhouette of a man in a suit with horns surrounded by fire, which could be a nod to Hades, even if he isn’t typically depicted with devil-like features. In the episode, Zeus claims that his brother Hades will be arriving any minute and must be ready. Batman arrives and Zeus embraces him, believing him to be his brother. Even if it seems unlikely Zeus has a role in the story, it’s great just how many small details and Easter eggs are getting added to the backdrop alone.

  • New ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos Offer Some Interesting Easter Eggs and Potential Villain

New ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos Offer Some Interesting Easter Eggs and Potential Villain

News on Batgirl has been quite plentiful lately as Glasgow has once again been transformed into Gotham City. As the crew prepares to begin filming, more and more Easter eggs have been spotted by some eagle-eyed fans, including images that hint at appearances from Hugo Strange, Robin, and even Black Canary. Now, more photos (sent to us by @thegeeksreview) from the set have made their way online and seem to tease some inspiration from Batgirl: Year One and a reference many diehard DC Fans will love.

Today’s look at the Glasgow set have revealed what looks to be construction on a restaurant named “Bressi.” For those unfamiliar, Bressi is the last name of an infamous Gotham City, Tony, who was an antagonist of Barbara’s in Batgirl: Year One. In the comic, Bressi is introduced following Batgirl putting a beating on DC villain Killer Moth, who was attempting to kidnap Bruce Wayne. Moth attempts to sell his services as a bodyguard to Bressi, who laughs in his face because he was beaten by a girl.

Also spotted in the area was a new billboard that serves as a fun nod to a coffee brand seen in multiple mediums of DC Comics: Sundollar Coffee, their universe equivalent of Starbucks. The billboard features a smiling coffee cup alongside the logo and the brand slogan of “The Best Money Can Buy”.

Batgirl is shaping up to be something really exciting and seems to be greatly inspired by Batgirl: Year One; if you haven’t yet, now is the time to read up in preparation. The film is expected to release sometime late this year.

  • Black Canary Reference Spotted in Latest ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos

Black Canary Reference Spotted in Latest ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos

The Birds of Prey are a prominent crime-fighting force in DC comics, usually comprised of an all-female roster. They have most recently appeared in the Harley Quinn-led film, where she alongside Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya, and Cassandra Cain teamed up to take down Roman Sionis, aka the Black Mask. There has been some hope that the missing key member may also join at one point, Barbara Gordon. Luckily, new set photos offer a hint that a meeting might be in the near future.

We’ve seen quite a bit from the set of Batgirl, which included an all-new look at Michael Keaton‘s bat-suit and even confirmation on the existence of Robin in the new DCEU. There was even a tease for a potential appearance of Hugo Strange. A new set photo of some more posters has found its way online and includes a direct reference to Black Canary. While most of the poster is covered, it’s likely connected to her music career.

It seems Dinah Lance may be going solo in Gotham City these days. Rumors have swirled recently on her inclusion in the film with it even connecting into her upcoming solo project. For those who aren’t familiar with the Batgirl: Year One storyline, Canary played an important role as Barbara Gordon’s inspiration in becoming a crime-fighting vigilante. So, they may take some queues from that storyline to add more inspiration to the character’s motivation outside of Batman.

  • Batman Mural in ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos Includes a First Look at Robin

Batman Mural in ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos Includes a First Look at Robin

Not too long ago, we shared the first look at a mural from the Batgirl set that featured Michael Keaton’s updated Batman design. Well, only minutes later the full mural has been revealed and there’s a second part that almost slipped away. While it seems that parts of his face have faded, it offers a clear look at a comic-accurate take on the boy wonder. You can check out the full mural here:

What makes this inclusion stand out is that there wasn’t a word on Robin appearing in the film. Of course, this doesn’t mean he’ll have a role in the story, but it does confirm that Batman was active at some point with one version of the character by his side. It opens up a lot of questions, such as if this means we’ll see the Dynamic Duo in action during the film’s runtime.

Of course, Keaton is set to appear in The Flash, which could also potentially set up his storyline leading into this film. We might get more clarity once that film drops, but it’s great to see the Boy Wonder potentially getting some silver screen attention. He’s been mostly absent and was mostly featured in TV projects. So, we’ll see if they might announce a casting in the near future.

  • Leaked ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos Offer First Look at Leslie Grace

Leaked ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos Offer First Look at Leslie Grace

Batgirl has officially started production, as more set photos are slowly finding their way online. Earlier today, some posters were spotted that were hinting at the potential appearance of famed Batman villain Hugo Strange. now, it seems that shortly after the first look at lead actress Leslie Grace has found its way online from the Glasglow set.

While she isn’t sporting her iconic Batsuit just yet, we do get a clear look at her wearing a GCPD t-shirt. Some time ago, we got the confirmation that she’ll work for her father’s police station and hints at their take on her character. We still know very little about the plot and what villains she might face, with the sole exception being Brendan Fraser as Firefly.

It’s exciting to know that they are revving up production and with the exterior shots we have some hope that we’ll also get a closer look at her new costume. It was teased during DC FanDome, but only with some artwork from the distance. They’ve teased which direction they are taking it, but it’s always a different experience seeing it on set.

  • WarnerMedia CEO on Possible ‘The Batman’ Delay As Omicron Concerns Grow

WarnerMedia CEO on Possible ‘The Batman’ Delay As Omicron Concerns Grow

There have been some concerns regarding the recent spike in COVID cases due to the new Omicron virus. Of course, it also means that there’s always a chance that films once again face inevitable delays until numbers reduce, as there are fears that theaters will be forced to close down again. Spider-Man: No Way Home still continues to show impressive numbers at the box office but recent numbers highlight it is more the exception rather than the rule. So, with just a few months left until The Batman releases, people wondered if it may also face a delay. Luckily, Jason Kilar, the CEO of WarnerMedia, has offered a statement on whether they’d push the film’s release back or not.

We’re certainly paying attention to everything going on with Omicron. We feel good about the date right now. We’re gonna watch it day by day.”

    Jason Kilar

There’s still quite some time until the film hits theaters in March. So, numbers may either start going back down or continue to grow as the weeks go by. It’s not surprising that WarnerMedia is taking a conservative approach to make sure they don’t delay the film too early if developments show a positive trend. Of course, the bigger concerns come when they continue pushing out marketing for the film only for it to get delayed a few months back. It’s a gamble for any production at this point.

  • Leaked ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos Seems to Hint at Hugo Strange

Leaked ‘Batgirl’ Set Photos Seems to Hint at Hugo Strange

After a long wind up, Batgirl has finally begun production. They are currently busy filming in Glasgow. This is now the third Bat-centric DC film to claim Glasgow as its headquarters and background for Gotham City, following The Batman and for a brief time, The Flash. With production preparing for exterior shots, the streets of Glasgow have been transformed into Gotham City with all sorts of vehicles and posters. Already it seems like some set photos found their way online featuring posters that may hint at a more sinister presence behind the scenes in Gotham City.

The set photo teases the existence of the notorious Batman villain, Hugo Strange. A poster on-site with the captions “Excellent! Excellent!” features a man with a striking resemblance to Hugo Strange with a bald head and sinister grin. The only thing missing would be his iconic coke bottle glasses, which seem purposely scratched out.

Hugo Strange first appeared in Detective Comics #36, where he first went up against Batman after using a concentrated lightning machine to cover Gotham City in a thick and dense fog. It allowed his gangs to rob Gotham Cities banks without being seen. Strange was also one of the first Batman villains to figure out his identity. He would later return and begin experiments on insane asylum patients, using growth hormone serums to turn them into giant monsters and send them on a destructive path throughout Gotham city.

The character is still around to this day and made his live-action debut in Gotham, in which he was the root cause of so many villain origins as products of his experiments at the Indian Hill research facility. He also was one of the main antagonists of Batman: Arkham City. It’ll be interesting to see if they are building up his appearance later down the line, or he might have a role in the film.

  • Ben Affleck Talks Passing on ‘The Batman’ and Leaving the Role Behind

Ben Affleck Talks Passing on ‘The Batman’ and Leaving the Role Behind

There have been many discussions surrounding Ben Affleck‘s final run as the iconic Caped Crusader. A recent rumor has been hinting that even his return in The Flash means he’ll truly leave the role behind. The actor has openly discussed that the role and franchise commitment has pushed him down a deep end, especially when he passed on directing a Batman-focused film. In an interview with LA Times, he opens up on why he decided to move on from the project.

Directing “Batman” is a good example. I looked at it and thought, “I’m not going to be happy doing this. The person who does this should love it.” You’re supposed to always want these things, and I probably would have loved doing it at 32 or something. But it was the point where I started to realize it’s not worth it. It’s just a wonderful benefit of reorienting and recalibrating your priorities that once it started being more about the experience, I felt more at ease.

    Ben Affleck

In the same interview, he also opened up on how Justice League was the boiling point for the actor, especially with the weight of the production felt after the tragedy when Zack Snyder lost his daughter. It’s not the quality of the film but the experience that pushed him away.

It was really “Justice League” that was the nadir for me. That was a bad experience because of a confluence of things: my own life, my divorce, being away too much, the competing agendas and then [director] Zack [Snyder]’s personal tragedy and the reshooting. It just was the worst experience. It was awful. It was everything that I didn’t like about this. That became the moment where I said, “I’m not doing this anymore.” It’s not even about, like, “Justice League” was so bad. Because it could have been anything.

    Ben Affleck

Even with his short run as Batman, Affleck made the role his own and the lesson he learned is something valuable we all can take away. There’s something about tackling a project that you are passionate about that truly redefines your approach. If he forced himself to make a Batman film he had no connection with, it may not only add more pressure to the director and actor but also become apparent in his work. It’ll be exciting to see what other passion projects he chases in the future.
