  • RUMOR: ‘The Flash’s Villain Might Be an Evil Barry Allen

RUMOR: ‘The Flash’s Villain Might Be an Evil Barry Allen

It looks like we might’ve gotten some more insight into the mysterious multiversal plot surrounding The Flash. Not so long ago, we saw set photos featuring a stand-in for Ezra Miller next to the actor himself. It implied we’ll meet multiple versions of Barry Allen. It seems there’s more to this than we thought, as The Direct has shared some insight into the main villain of the film, an evil version of Barry.

They claim that the story will take inspiration from Flashpoint, but a doppelganger will take the place of Reverse-Flash.  So, it will remain that the Flash will go up against another speedster, but it’ll end up being a displaced Barry Allen. It’s uncertain if it might also echo the CW show’s this, where an alternative version of Barry turned out to be the villain Savitar. It’s not stated that they’d take inspiration from this version of the character, or it’s simply an evil Flash.

It’s a popular storyline in the comics as well, as Wally West faced an evil version of himself known as Walter West or the Dark Flash. He might be the cause for the multiversal rift or a showcase of what would happen if the character ends up down a darker path. The concept isn’t too bad, but it’s strange they’d replace such an iconic villain. There’s a chance they don’t want to introduce this new villain and somehow fit him into the story while exploring the multiverse. We’ll see if further details are teased as the film continues production.

  • Comics You Should Read Ahead of ‘The Suicide Squad’s Premiere

Comics You Should Read Ahead of ‘The Suicide Squad’s Premiere

With how vocal writer and director James Gunn has been about how the original Suicide Squad comics inspired his film, you may want to get familiar with whom you’re dealing with this time around. In this explosive romp in Corto Maltese, the squad finds themselves up against Starro The Conquerer, a cosmic starfish, who, as his name implies, conquers worlds throughout the universe. While it won’t exactly be following the storyline, the absolute best place to start would be none other than John Ostrander’s original run on the team, the book that inspired Gunn to bring The Suicide Squad to life.

    John Ostrander’s Suicide Squad

Without John Ostrander, the team we know today would’ve never come to be. While the Squad had already existed, In Legends #3, which was co-written by Ostrander, the modern team would debut with a roster made up of some of the worst DC had to offer. The newest roster included Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Bronze Tiger, Nightshade, Enchantress, Tarantula, and Mindboggler. The run on this team would become definitive and the basis for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, with the writer even making a cameo in the upcoming film.

    Paul Kupperberg’s Peacemaker

Peacemaker made his explosive DC Comics debut in the Crisis on Infinite Earths run before scoring his own four-part mini-series in 1988 from writer Paul Kupperberg. The series would follow Peacemakers’ introduction into the universe as he struggles to deal with the fact terrorism doesn’t save lives. The mini-series sees him up against the terrorist Doctor Tzin-Tzin. It will get you quickly up to speed with John Cena’s character and figure out how the chrome-dome thinks.

    Paul Dini’s Batman: Harley Quinn

The return of the infamous Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad marks the character’s third appearance in the DCEU. It follows Birds of Prey and the first Suicide Squad film. Margot Robbie has excellently tied the vision of each unique director together to keep the character consistent. This time around, director James Gunn teased that Harley is strongly based on Paul Dini, the man who created the character all the way back in the days of Batman: The Animated Series. He then wrote the story known as Batman: Harley Quinn that follows her story after she got abandoned by the Joker. The story perfectly captures the chaotic and rambunctious nature that she’s known for and shows just what makes her just as dangerous as Joker, if not more.

Giffen and Jones’ Justice League Europe

Starro appears in a few issues of the series Justice League Europe #24 up until #27. He’s a threat that can’t get rid of easily, as it only requires one surviving star to go through the same process again. This time around, however, we see the League assisting the conqueror, as he is dying. Their plan would save an innocent village from the invader and send him back into space. But when the mission goes wrong, the JLE must fight their way through a city of civilians and their teammates controlled by the starfish. With quite the obscure villain, whether you read it before or after, all should be warned of the might of Starro The Conqueror.

    Tom Taylor’s Bad Blood

Tom Taylor took the Suicide Squad and flipped it on its head when he reinvented the team with a roster of original characters. When a battle between the Squad and a terrorist group results in multiple casualties, the teams are forcibly combined. It leads to some overwhelming hostility, as no one knows who they can trust. The only exception is Harley and Deadshot, who are the only survivors of Task Force X. While it’s a vast departure from the upcoming film, it’s an incredible read for people who might just be craving more from the team after the film, and could inspire a film down the line.

  • ‘Cobra Kai’ Star Xolo Mariduena in Talks to Lead DC’s ‘Blue Beetle’

‘Cobra Kai’ Star Xolo Mariduena in Talks to Lead DC’s ‘Blue Beetle’

Streaming services have begun a whole new playing field when it comes to expanding your cinematic universe. Marvel and DC are both capitalizing on the straight-to-consumer system to build these worlds. In the case of DC, HBO Max has become the streaming home for the DCEU with projects like Peacemaker, Batgirl, Static Shock, and Blue Beetle in the works. We recently got the news that actress Leslie Grace is set to star as Barbra Gordon in her own solo, and now it looks like we’ve got our Blue Beetle.

Star of Netflix’s Cobra Kai, Xolo Mariduena, is reportedly in talks to star Jaime Reyes, the third incarnation of the Blue Beetle and will lead his own solo film. The project is set to be directed by Angel Manuel Soto and was written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The project is set to begin production early next year, with John Rickard serving as producer and Zev Foreman as executive producer.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Jaime Reyes follows in the footsteps of Ted Kord, who picked up the mantle of Blue Beetle from Dan Garret. Jaime is different from his predecessors in that the Scarab attached to his back, a piece of tech from an alien species known as the Teach. It allows Jaime to don a suit of armor, and become the Blue Beetle. The character is yet another one from Charlton comics, a group that DC and WB seem keen on adapting lately, with Peacemaker also coming to HBO Max. While it isn’t confirmed, we could see seeds planted and or maybe even Kord show up before Jaimes big debut.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Djimon Hounsou Returning as the Wizard in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’

EXCLUSIVE: Djimon Hounsou Returning as the Wizard in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’

That’s right, you read that headline correctly. Djimon Hounsou and his character, the ancient Wizard Shazam, will return in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. While I’m sure the Shazam-Fam will welcome the return, this does come as a bit of a shock based on the fact that the Wizard disintegrated to dust in front of our very eyes in the first film and his magical staff was broken. It will be interesting to see how the sequel works around all of that. While a flashback is certainly possible, I’d say that it also seems likely that those powerful but villainous sisters, Hespera and Kalypso (played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu), could have something to do with his resurrection. But it won’t be out of the goodness of their hearts.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods Djimon Hounsou's Wizard

Hounsou is no stranger to comic book properties, appearing in both Shazam! and Captain Marvel in 2019. Before that, he was the voice of King Ricou in Aquaman (2018), appeared as Korath in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), and with Keanu Reeves in DC’s Constantine (2005). His voice work also includes a part in Amazon’s Invincible and a 2010 Black Panther animated series in which he played T’Challa. But his “nerd cred” goes back even further, with a part in Angelina Jolie’s game-based adventure film Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life in 2003, and all the way back to 1994, when he appeared as Horus in the sci-fi cult classic Stargate.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods stars Zachary Levi as the superhero, and Asher Angel as his teenaged alter ego Billy Batson who was gifted a major “glow up” along with all of the amazing powers of the Wizard Shazam with the help of his magical staff. The DC comics film sequel, which is on the verge of commencing filming in Georgia alongside Black Adam, is scheduled to hit theaters on June 2nd, 2023.

EXCLUSIVE: Description of Hawkman’s Ship in ‘Black Adam’

Back in March, a couple of images of a Black Adam set being built led our own John Sabato to speculate that the production might be building Hawkman’s Thanagarian Star Cruiser. I can now confirm that it was indeed the set-piece that was being built in those pictures. In addition, here’s an exclusive and detailed description of the finished Hawkman ship set!

    Hawkman ship DC comics

“It’s awesome. It’s sleek… has this curved look to it…  a raised circular sitting area in the back and a big set of long red lights that curve from the back up across the ceiling. There’s a medical bay nook (reclined bed with instruments around it) and something that looks like a bar with glass chairs. Hawkman symbol in gold on the floor in the center. Also one of the hallways has a Hawkman logo in red glowing at the end of it. Pretty cool.”

    A Murphy’s Multiverse exclusive

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to attain any pictures of the finished set. However, this information comes from a long-time trusted source of Murphy’s Multiverse, so we are confident in this description’s validity. What do you think? Are you excited to see Hawkman’s ship on the big screen?

Alongside Dwayne Johnson’s starring role, and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Aldis Hodge will play Hawkman in Black Adam. The DC film, currently filming in Georgia, is scheduled to hit theaters on July 29, 2022.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘BLACK ADAM’ Looks to Explore the Origins of Doctor Fate

EXCLUSIVE: ‘BLACK ADAM’ Looks to Explore the Origins of Doctor Fate

Production on the long-awaited Dwayne Johnson superhero vehicle Black Adam is set to get underway in Atlanta this April and as the start date draws nearer, director Jaume Collet-Serra is looking to round out the cast. Our first look at the film at DC Fandome teased Teth-Adam’s slave origins in ancient Khandaq and a new casting search indicates the film might be spending quite a bit of time exploring Adam’s origins.

Get Your First Look At Black Adam Concept Art And DC Fandome Panel Breakdown - The Illuminerdi

Black Adam is currently on the hunt for what appears to be a young version of Johnson’s Teth-Adam along with characters who would appear to be his father and another warrior from the time period. Additionally, the production is looking an actor to portray a magician described as a “powerful being prepared to do what they must to protect the world.” Given the time period the film is set to explore and the foundations it is expected to lay, it’s HIGHLY probable that Black Adam will introduce Nabu to the DC Universe.

DC Teases Return of Doctor Fate

Nabu is an incredibly ancient and powerful cosmic entity whose spirit is contained in the Helmet of Fate, the magical artifact worn by those taking up the mantle of Doctor Fate. Nabu prophesied the arrival of a Thangarian ship to Earth and was with Black Adam and Khufu, the Egyptian prince whose soul was eventually reincarnated as Carter Hall, aka Hawkman, when they discovered the ship and the Nth metal. The pieces all fall into place nicely for Black Adam to serve as an origin story for Adam, Hawkman and Doctor Fate.

Black Adam, originally set for a December 2021 release, is still without a new release date.

  • Other Projects in Development

    DC MULTIVERSE PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT

DC has an incredible number of projects at various stages of development. Some of these are destined for HBO Max and others for theaters. Here’s what we know…

    ZATANNA

Zatanna Zatara follows in the footsteps of her father, the all-powerful magician Giovanni Zatara. Zatanna has learned from the best and is able to cast any spell by simply speaking backward.

    STATIC SHOCK

The film will follow young metahuman Virgil Hawkins who is capable of electromagnetic
    control and generation.

    HOURMAN

The original Hourman, Rex Tyler, was a veteran member of the Justice Society of America and creator of the Miraclo synthesis, a substance that would give Tyler super strength and endurance for one a day. Tyler’s son, Rick, would go on to pick up the mantle of his father and use miraclo to fight alongside the JSA.

    PLASTIC WOMAN

The Film will follow a gender-bent version of the popular comic book character known as Plastic Man.

    BLACKHAWK

During WW2, The Blackhawks were a group of ace pilots lead by a man only known as
Blackhawk, operating out of Blackhawk Island, facing off against the Axis powers during the war while aiding the allies.

    STRANGE ADVENTURES

Announced in late October of 2019 as a series being developed for HBO Max, Greg Berlanti’s Strange Adventures is shaping up as a Twilight Zone-esque anthology that serves as “cautionary tales set in a world where superpowers exist.” These “morality tales” will involve characters from all over the DC Universe, though it’s probably not coincidental that Eisner Award-winning writer Tom King is rolling out a 12-issue Adam Strange comic beginning in the Spring of 2020, bringing the once popular and pulpy character back into the spotlight.

    AMAZONS OF THEMYSCIRA

Announced in December of 2019, the spin-off is being developed by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins.

    GREEN LANTERN CORPS

Geoff Johns was expected to deliver a script for the film sometime before the end of 2019.

    GREEN LANTERN

Touted as DC’s biggest television series ever made, the Greg Berlanti Green Lantern series will debut on HBO Max at a yet to be determined time.

    SUPERMAN

There is no script or director currently attached to any Man of Steel-related projects making it unlikely we’ll see the Big Blue Boy Scout in a solo film any time soon. However, it was revealed in June of 2020 that the studio had approached Henry Cavill about reprising the role in other DC films.

    JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

Different from the long gestating film project, this project is being developed for HBO Max by JJ Abrams as part of his deal with WarnerMedia. At this point, it sounds like we may also see Zatana and Constantine projects rolled out as foundations to this project!

    AQUAMAN: KING OF ATLANTIS

An animated series by James Wan, this HBO Max show will take a look at the early years of Arthur as he tries to prove himself to his people.

    DC SUPERHERO HIGH

Elizabeth Banks is developing this half-hour comedy series for HBO Max that promises to follow a group of gifted students who aren’t aware of the destinies that await them.

  • ‘Constantine’

    ‘Constantine’

    Premiere: TBD

Not much is known about the project, but we know that this and Zatanna will explore
the dark and supernatural corners of the DC Universe before they ultimately collide into the
    Justice League Dark.

  • ‘Nightwing’

    ‘Nightwing’

    Premiere: TBD

Director Chris McKay described the project as a “Father and Son story” but also one about revenge. The film would follow Dick Grayson on a new path in life as Nightwing, the protector of Bludhaven.
