Four years after its debut, Hawkeye remains one of Marvel Studios’ strongest streaming series. The Christmas setting and dynamic between Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld‘s Hawkeyes made the street-level story a hit with fans and the finale seemed to set up a bright future for many of the show’s characters and some hope for a second season.
In an interview with the direct, Hawkeye writer Andrew Guest explained that while there “was talk about” a second season of the series, “the timing didn’t work out.”
There was talk at a certain point about… we did explore creatively what Season 2 of Hawkeye might be if we were able to do it. Unfortunately, the timing didn’t work out in terms of Marvel and all the various pieces that need to come together, but I loved working on ‘Hawkeye.’ I think [Jeremy] Renner and Hailee Steinfeld are so terrific together, and I would love to see more of those two.

As has been the standard for the Multiverse Saga, one of Hawkeye‘s leads, Hailee Steinfeld, has made only one incredibly brief cameo appearance in the four years since the series hit D+. And as the Saga speeds to an end, it’s not entirely clear when she might appear again.
Released on D+ in 2021, Hawkeye still stands as one of Marvel’s strongest and most complete streaming series. And yes, I loved walking on the streets of the MCU and would gladly enjoy doing it again.
In an interview with The Playlist, Renner shared his belief that following recent conversations with the powers that he, a second season of Hawkeye might find its way to D+ after all.
“We got to where we’re trying to do the second season,” revealed Renner. “And I think I’ll get strong enough to be able to do it. And we’ll work it out. It’s gonna be great.”
“I really enjoyed doing the series version because it was a bit more intimate and had the family dynamic, which is always a huge part of him,” said Renner. “I think Clint’s superpower is the human side — he’s a superpowerless superhero. He’s one of the few, but I think his superpower is that sort of grit of the human condition and his loyalty and family. It’s like, otherwise, what are you fighting for? We’re fighting for that love and that loyalty of family. And so exploring that was always great. And then there’s the Christmas theme — being in New York, that was great too.”
With Steinfeld‘s Bishop reportedly poised to have a bit of a bigger role inbthe studio’s Post-Multiverse Saga plans, perhaps Marvel will find a way for the further adventures of the Hawkeyes...and Mockingbird!

Outside of the Avengers films, Marvel Studios’ next film, Thunderbolts*, will demand more from audiences than any other MCU film to date. Thanks to its ensemble cast, the Jake Schreier-helmed film looks to serve as a sequel or follow-up to more projects than any other non-Avengers film in the MCU’s 17-year history.
Originally developed as a sequel to 2021’s Black Widow, Thunderbolts* has evolved significantly–perhaps more than any MCU project ever–over the past few years. While it will still feature Florence Pugh‘s Yelena Belova as the lead and introduce Lewis Pullman‘s not-so-mysterious Bob, it will also feature a heavier-than-originally-expected dose of Sebastian Stan‘s Bucky Barnes. Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen and Olga Kurylenko will all also reprise their MCU roles and team up with Yelana and Bucky to take on Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ baddie, Val, and her enigmatic OXE group.

Truthfully, Captain America: The First Avenger is tough to slot on a list like this until you realize it’s a fictional universe and nothing actually matters. That said, while a fair argument can be made for its inclusion in Tier One, a counterargument can be made that, for all intensts and purposes, the James Buchanan Barnes introduced in TFA died in the fall from the train. While he’s no longer the Winter Soldier, Bucky is not–and never has been–the character from this film. Pairing Captain America: The Winter Soldier with The Falcon and The Winter Soldier does enough to prepare a first-timer for Bucky’s role in Thunderbolts*; however, TFA does provide additional context for Bucky’s tortured persona and why he’s striving so hard to change the world around him.

And after you logic your way through all of that, the simple fact remains that even though it’s not the first film in which it’s mentioned, Captain America: The First Avenger is chronologically the first time the Super Soldier Serum is a factor in the MCU. It’s continued to play a role in several projects and will do so again I Thunderbolts*.
While it’s not the first appearance of Bucky Barnes–that came in Captain America: The First Avenger—Captain America: The Winter Soldier is THE definitive Bucky film. Over a decade later, the 2014 film remains unparalleled as an action-packed thriller and helped set Sebastian Stan on the path to MCU royalty.
Ant-Man and The Wasp (2018)

While the last film in the Ant-Man franchise may well be remembered as one of Marvel Studios’ worst films, Ant-Man and The Wasp, the franchise’s second installment, is a fun ride worth taking. It served a surprisingly major role in The Infinity Saga but if you’re prepping for Thunderbolts*, you’re watching it to get to know Hannah John-Kamen‘s Ava Starr, aka Ghost. Thunderbolts* is Ava’s first MCU appearance since Ant-Man and The Wasp, so there’s a lot to catch up on, including how her powers have evolved since we last saw her.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (2021)

Marvel’s second streaming series, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier might do the heaviest lifting of any project on the list. Not only does the 6-episode introduce Wyatt Russell‘s John Walker, who looks to play a pretty major role in Thunderbolts*, it also tells a key chapter in Bucky’s story and introduces Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ Val, who is responsible for assembling the Thunderbolts. The project also adds to the Super Soldier Serum narrative by introducing Isaiah Bradley, the Flag Smashers and by creating a new Super Soldier when Walker injects himself with the newest version.
They had blood samples from an American test subject with semi-stable traces of serum in his system. After much labor, I was able to isolate the necessary compounds in his blood. I was a god. I did what no other scientist since Erskine was able to do. But mine was going to be different.

Black Widow (2021)

Released simultaneously in theaters and via Disney Premier Access on D+, Black Widow not only finally gave Scarlett Johansson the lead after spending a decade in the MCU but it also introduced her messy family of Russian spies. Popping back Nat’s life after decades away, Florence Pugh‘s beautifully flawed Yelena Belova, David Harbour‘s bellicose and bombastic Alexi Shostakovich, Russia’s very own Super Soldier, and Rachel Weisz‘s shifty Melina Vostokoff helped show a more vulnerable side of the character. The chemistry between Pugh and Harbour was a highlight of the film and something to look forward to again in Thunderbolts*. And if you’re watching, stick around for the PCS which leads directly into the next project on the list…
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)

Given how little screentime Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ Val has had in the MCU, it stands to reason that the project in which she’s on screen the most is a must watch heading into Thunderbolts*. While it still isn’t a truly heavy dose of the character, it does provide plenty in the way of exposing the kind of person she is whilenalso revealing her lust for power and what she’s willing to do to acquire it.
Tier Two
Tier Two projects occupy an interesting place on The Ultimate Lists. While they’re never required viewing, they always offer something that can add to the viewing experience of the upcoming project.
The Incredible Hulk (2008)

After being forgotten for a decade and a half, The Incredible Hulk is cool again…or at least relevant. Bruce Banner’s work on Project Gamma Pulse was meant to recreate Dr. Erskine’s Super Soldier Serum. Obviously that didn’t go as planned…TIH includes not one but two Super Soldiers gone wrong in Banner and Emily Blonsky. When will these people learn?!?!
Hawkeye (2022), Episodes 4-6

One of the studio’s strongest beginning-to-end streaming series, Hawkeye features a three-episode appearance by Pugh‘s Yelena that while not necessary to enjoy Thunderbolts* will add to your enjoyment of it. Yelena’s time in Hawkeye–most of which is spent enjoyably with Hailee Steinfeld‘s Kate Bishop–is fascinating and allows for further excavation of the deeply rooted issues the former Red Roomer deals with.
Tier Three
For completists only…
Tier three projects may offer nothing more than cameos, passing references or relevant background information for upcoming projects but nothing in them will ever make or break a fan’s viewing experience.
The Avengers (2012)

The best example of what type of information can be expected from Tier Three projects comes right off the bat: you’re watching this one just to visit Stark Tower for the first time. The building is a central location in The Avengers and, 13 years later, is again in Thunderbolts*, though now under new ownership.

Avengers: Infinity War is always worth a watch though it really doesn’t have much to offer in the way of preparing for Thunderbolts*. A little bit of Bucky’s story is told here, including revealing what he’d been up to In Wakanda, but beyond that, just enjoy it for the action!

Like Infinity War, Endgame offers a bit of Bucky but the real interest here, if there is any, is the ripple effect Nat’s death will eventually have on Yelena…but Yelena isn’t in the film, so just knowing Nat died will suffice. You could also argue that the Time Heist adds some additional context to what was going on inside Avengers Tower during the Battle of New York but how important will that be?

Set at Christmas, the first season of Hawkeye brought an entirely different vibe to Marvel Studios first wave of streaming series. It wasn’t all holly and jolly, however, as the project took viewers into New York City’s world of organized crime and reintroduced Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Kingpin into the MCU. For a while, it seemed as though the first season–which was well-received by critics and fans–woule be the only season but over the last year, buzz has steadily grown about Marvel’s interest in putting together a second round of episodes.

On the heels of Winderbaum’s comments, a new report on the new season’s potential plot has emerged, further fueling hopes that Clint and Kate are headed back to D+.
The new information comes from Richtman and while it rehashes some older rumors, it includes some interesting updates to the story of the potential second season. According to the insider, inspired by Die Hard, Hawkeye Season 2 will see Clint and Kate pinned down in one location while having to fight off an onslaught of attacks by assassins. Most interestingly, it sounds as though the final boss will be the villain Trickshot, otherwise known as Barney Barton!
This is not the first time Barney has been associated with the project and it’s easy to see how given the project’s potential plot, both The Raid and Die Hard could have been used as inspiration. And with Die Hard in the DNA, it does sound as though Season 2 of Hawkeye will be once again set and Christmastime!
As exciting as it is, it is worth remembering that Winderbaum has also consistently warned MCU fans that the television branch of the studio is developing far more projects than they will ever produce. And the recent revelation that Terror Inc., Strange Academy and Nova were all pushed to the back of the queue should also serve to remind us all that until we start seeing set photos, trailers and official release dates, nothing should be taken for granted.
In May 2024, Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation, Brad Winderbaum, explained that things had changed behind the scenes in the way Marvel Studios developed and released its streaming series. “We were already, as of two years ago, adapting our process from being, you know, fill the service as fast as possible no matter what, to a more considered approach,” Winderbaum said in an interview with Variety. Less than a year later, the results of that “considered approach” are ruffling fans’ feathers.
Over the past week, it was revealed that a pair of LONG-gestating streaming series, Nova and the Danai Gurira-led Okoye spinoff, were among multiple projects that the studio had either delayed indefinitely or scrapped entirely as Marvel Television pursues a more traditional approach to cheating its series. Now, Winderbaum has given some insight into what considerations are being given to the projects Marvel will move forward with in the future.
“I think it’s ‘linear series potential,’” said Winderbaum, referencing a shift to a far more traditional approach to producing television. “As we develop things for the future, I think they’re going to be designed to be multiple seasons, have more of a pattern, and be able to be released annually.”
Winderbaum‘s comments come as cameras prepare to roll a second season of Daredevil: Born Again just as the first season launches on D+. His comments also may well explain the delays to projects such as Nova and Strange Academy, which insiders believe the studio will eventually greenlight for production: until the creative teams can outline multiple seasons of the series, the studio may be content to hold off.
That plan, however, could eventually mean a shortage in content which wouldn’t be ideal even as Disney seeks to reduce the output of content from its major studios. There is good news on that front, though, as Winderbaum reveals that a pair of previously well-received streaming series could be revisited for second seasons. Though nothing is set in stone, both Agatha All Along and Hawkeye are under consideration for future seasons.
I really like the idea of two shows a year, especially because we are developing more than we make. We used to treat the shows like the features where we’re gonna make a show and that’s it, we’re going to hit a release date, hell or high water. Well, it’s hard to do for a two hour feature, it’s even harder to do for, six, seven, eight, nine hours. So now we have a more traditional approach.

“A show like Agatha, to me, is concept based. Yes, a second season for sure is something that we would want to do, but let’s not rush it. Let’s get the right idea and then make it,” said Winderbaum of another batch of episodes of Agatha All Along.
Winderbaum’s comments on a potential second season of Agatha All Along are certainly surprising given co-star Patti LuPone‘s comments to the contrary. Even series star Kathryn Hahn, who made it clear she’s not down with playing the character, wasn’t able to confirm whether or not a follow-up season was in store, saying “we’dhave to let the powers that be make those decisions.”
“Hawkeye is another one that feels like you can make a second season of that show because it’s Christmas, because it’s Clint and Kate,” said Winderbaum. “You can kind of revisit it whenever, and we’re looking for opportunities to do that.” And with a shortage of projects known to be in the queue, the studio may be reaching into its quiver for Season 2 sooner rather than later.
Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye provided the first deep dive into the MCU’s corner of street-level crime, introducing fans to Wilson Fisk and his Tracksuit Mafia. Despite his best efforts to not get involved, Clint Barton, the Avenging Archer, ultimately teamed up with Kate Bishop to take down the Tracksuits while Maya Lopez tried to put down the Kingpin. While Maya’s and Fisk’s stories continued in Echo which will lead to Fisk’s next appearance in Daredevil: Born Again, neither of the Hawkeyes have had any further adventures. However, evidence that may soon change is starting to accumulate.
Earlier this year, buzz surrounded a rumor that the studio was moving ahead with a second season of Hawkeye that would see the heroes up against the odds while pinned down in a single location. That buzz died down until a recent report by Marvel Studios insider Daniel Richtman indicated that production on Season 2 of the series was set to start in Fall 2025 with an eye on having it ready for streaming as early as 2026. While neither the studio nor trades have addressed the possibility of another season, the recent home media release of Season 1 may have tipped Marvel’s hand.
While marketing the first season’s physical media release, Marvel Studios is referring to Season 1 as the “complete first season.” While that may seem relatively minor, Disney has marketed other series such as WandaVision and Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, neither of which are expected to have sophomore seasons, as “The Complete Series “
While it’s certainly not definitive proof that a Season 2 of Hawkeye will head into production, it does mean the studio hasn’t closed the door on the further adventures of Clint and Kate.
The first three years of Marvel Studios foray into live-action streaming television were marked with highs, lows, hits, misses, many memorable moments and others that were entirely forgettable. Many of the shortcomings of the first wave of series (WandaVision, Season 1 of Loki and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier) could easily be attributed to the studio navigating in uncharted waters while also dealing with the uncertainty of the impact made on Hollywood productions by the global COVID-19 pandemic. While the first three series all began production ahead of the worldwide shutdown, principal photography on the fourth D+ series, Hawkeye, which had already faced delays in getting started, kicked off in New York City nearly five months late.

According to MCU insider Daniel Richtman, Marvel Television is targeting a Fall 2025 start of production for Season 2 of Hawkeye with an eye on a late 2026 or late 2027 release.
A second season would mark the return of Renner to the role for the first time since a near-fatal accident in 2023. Outside of Renner and Steinfeld, the original rumor provided no information on the potential return of other characters from the first season of Hawkeye. However, given the positive fan response to his character, Jack Duquesne, it would be surprising if Tony Dalton was not approached about reprising the role.
Though Richtman’s new report didn’t touch on the potential premise of Season 2, the original rumblings indicated that the new episodes will take inspiration from the 2011 movie The Raid and see the Hawkeyes pinned down in “one location.” Additionally, Clint’s brother, Barney Barton, was rumored the bet set up to play a “major role” in the sophomore season.

Given its success and Steinfeld’s popularity, Marvel fans have been wondering what’s next for the characters and now it seems the studio has figured out their next move.
According to the internet’s busiest bee, My Time To Shine Hello, Marvel Studios has ordered up a second season of Hawkeye. No timeline was given for when the Marvel Television series might head into production or stream on Disney Plus.
In addition to reporting that another season of Hawkeye is in the works, MTTSH also shared some potential plot points. According to the scooper, Season 2 will take inspiration from the 2011 movie The Raid and see the Hawkeyes pinned down in “one location.” Finally, MTTSH alleges that Clint’s brother, Barney Barton, stands to play a “major role” in the sophomore season. In the comics, Barney was an FBI agent who, like his brother, was a high-level athlete. After being trained by Buck Chisholm–the man who trained Clint–and manipulated by Baron Zemo, Barney became a masked villain known as Trickshot and was part of Norman Osborn’s Thunderbolts/Dark Avengers. Following an intense brawl with his brother, Barney and Clint have reconciled and worked together on some missions in recent years.
