  • ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Eyeing Soft $70M Opening Weekend

‘Indiana Jones 5’ Eyeing Soft $70M Opening Weekend

It’s looking like the opening weekends are continuing to average at around $70M, as another film is joining that club in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. After The Flash was initially projected with that box office opening, the recent boost for Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse may be a hopeful sign that there’s a bit more momentum building up for bigger releases that have been surprisingly mellow throughout the year. Though, the amount of competition in a post-pandemic world might be doing more harm than good for individual releases.

Still, the return of Indiana Jones is set to be a big move forward as the final entry for Harrison Ford as the iconic character. So, perhaps a $60M to $70M opening isn’t quite what Disney was looking for given the nostalgia factor was a big driver throughout the last few major releases. It’s on par with the pandemic release of No Time to Die and Mission: Impossible – Fallout, but those had to compete in a very different market.

The big question mark is that without a bigger marketing push, this film will open below 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That was around $100M across three days but even with conservative predictions, it’s a bit of a headscratcher given how off some have been as of late. The big problem is that Indiana Jones‘ latest entry is expensive at a staggering $295M, which means the film needs to at least make $600M just to cover its production costs. Even with good legs, it might look like it’s a loss for Lucasfilm.

  • CCXP: ‘Indana Jones 5’s Title Finally Revealed

CCXP: ‘Indana Jones 5’s Title Finally Revealed

There have been a lot of theories on the web about what exactly might be the subtitle for the latest entry of Indiana Jones. For quite some time, Lucasfilm and director James Mangold have simply referred it as Indiana Jones, which is a possibility given how some film continuations simply share the same title as the first entry, such as the new Scream film. Yet, it seems that during CCXP 22, we’ve finally gotten a title.

It seems the film will go with Indiana Jones: Dial of Destiny. What exactly that “dial” is will haunt our theories until it releases in theaters, but it’s great to see the naming trend continue for the franchise. Destiny is also a fitting addition if you consider that this story will explore events from Jones’ use connect with the return of the Nazis now in the middle of the Space Race. Perhaps that dial could be the answer to who wins.

  • ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Opening Will Feature a De-Aged Harrison Ford

‘Indiana Jones 5’ Opening Will Feature a De-Aged Harrison Ford

De-aging technology has become quite the rage nowadays, especially with the work that Marvel Studios has invested to make actors seemingly play their younger selves. It doesn’t always work out, such as how Martin Scorcese‘s The Irishman featured some impressive technology, but given the actor’s age, one could tell something wasn’t right when they started trying to beat each other up. Still, it’s a fun tech innovation that has found its home in IP franchises, and it seems Indiana Jones 5 will do the same.

In a new piece by Empire, they reveal that the film’s opening will feature a flashback to the original trilogy’s Indiana Jones with Harrison Ford de-aged to look the part. Funny enough, set photos from quite some time ago did actually hint at the flashback, especially with a stunt person wearing a rather questionable Ford mask on his face. It does seem like they will swap him out once it comes to action sequences and him talking. Director James Mangold highlighted why they decided to take this route:

I wanted the chance to dive into this kind of full-on George-and-Steven old picture and give the audience an adrenaline blast.

    James Mangold

He also highlights that they use the opening set piece of a castle swarming with Nazis that pays tribute to the franchise’s early beginnings, especially in how it also helps guide audiences into the 60s setting of the fifth entry.

So that the audience doesn’t experience the change between the ‘40s and ‘60s as an intellectual conceit, but literally experiences the buccaneering spirit of those early days… and then the beginning of now.

    James mangold

It’s definitely going to be interesting to see how they pull it off and how it’ll tie into the overarching narrative. Whatever Indy is up to might end up inspiring the events that tie into the space race storyline we’ll see later in the film, but we can only speculate for now. Still, it’ll be a blast to see a younger Indiana Jones once again, even if it’s digital.

  • First ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Story Details Hint at Space Race Setting Facing an Old Foe

First ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Story Details Hint at Space Race Setting Facing an Old Foe

The space race is on, as we finally have some tips on what to expect from Indiana Jones‘ upcoming return to theaters. Harrison Ford is back to take on Nazis but this time in a very new setting as we’ll join the archeologist in 1969, smack-dab in the middle of the space race. While the original movement has long moved on, according to the film’s co-writer Jez Butterworth, the moon landing may have had some sinister minds trying to make it work.

The simple fact is that the moon-landing program was run by a bunch of ex-Nazis. How ‘ex’ they are is the question. And it gets up Indy’s nose…It’s not just that they’re looking for something where there’s nothing up there – it’s like Reno without the gambling, or whatever his line is. But the people that are behind it are, you know, his sworn enemies.

    Jez Butterworth

It definitely raises a few interesting questions. This story element could imply that Indiana Jones may somehow end up in space. After the last film introduced aliens into the franchise, it wouldn’t be too far out there but definitely could raise some questions on how it forces his hands into the story.

Jones is an archeologist and has nothing to do with space travel directly. So, the story could likely see an event from his past, perhaps even involving Mads Mikkelsen‘s Voller, who is inspired by Wernher von Braun, a former Nazi that would become a NASA engineer. In the same interview with Empire, the actor teases that perhaps there is something they are both chasing down.

He’s a man who would like to correct some of the mistakes of the past. There is something that could make the world a much better place to live in. He would love to get his hands on it. Indiana Jones wants to get his hands on it as well. And so, we have a story.

    Mads Mikkelsen

It definitely is going to be quite interesting to see how they tackle the 1969 space race with an aging Jones stuck in the middle of it all. It definitely sounds like an interesting setup and here’s hoping the trailer isn’t too far to finally unveil our first look at Jones back in action.

  • ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Director Shares His Approach to the Film

‘Indiana Jones 5’ Director Shares His Approach to the Film

James Mangold, famous for his work on Logan and Ford V Ferrari, is taking on a daunting task. He’ll be the first new director to helm an entry in the Indiana Jones franchise, which has all been directed by Steven Spielberg, who is still actively a producer on the project. Still, it seems that he wasn’t scared of tackling this story once again and shared in an interview with Empire how he approached the material, especially with an older Harrison Ford in the leading role.

It became really important to me to figure out how to make this a movie about a hero at sunset. The issues I brought up about Indy’s age were not things I thought were being addressed in the material being developed at the time. There were ‘old’ jokes, but the material itself wasn’t about it. To me, whatever you greatest liability, you should fly straight towards that. If you try to pretend it’s not there, you end up getting slings and arrows the whole way.

    James Mangold

It’s definitely interesting that he’s avoiding the age topic completely, even if some jokes may have found their way into the script. Still, the topic was even the main focus in the last entry that released back in 2008, especially with the set-up of a new generation taking over that wouldn’t lead to anything. So, we’ll see just how the story will revolve around Indiana Jones and what is even the main mystery, as we still haven’t heard what the title will be for the latest entry in the franchise.

  • Harrison Ford Reveals Why He Returned to Play Indiana Jones One Last Time

Harrison Ford Reveals Why He Returned to Play Indiana Jones One Last Time

Indiana Jones is finally making a return, and Harrison Ford is still set to take on the role even after all these years. It was 2008 when we last saw him take on the mantle with a few hints at a new generation taking over, but new director James Mangold alongside writers Jez and John-Henry Butterworth managed to convince the actor to return to the role once again.

In a new interview with Empire, he shares what we can expect from the project and seems quite excited about the adventure he joined, even if it seems like production wasn’t easy on this latest action-adventure production.

It’s full of adventure, full of laughs, full of real emotion. And it’s complex and it’s sneaky. The shooting of it was tough and long and arduous. But I’m very happy with the film that we have.

    Harrison Ford

He goes on to highlight that he was always open to potentially returning to the role, and it mostly depended “if a script came along” that was just right to truly return to Doctor Jones.

I just thought it would be nice to see one where Indiana Jones was at the end of his journey. If a script came along that I felt gave me a way to extend the character.

    Harrison Ford

It seems that his heart was definitely in it and Mangold managed to tease him with a story that was worth exploring once again. It’s not the first time he took a look at an aging hero in a world that changed, as he did the same with Logan and it’ll be interesting to see if this film manages to hold that same level of weight.

D23 is finally here and Lucasfilm took us on a ride throughout a fantasy-filled land as well as looking beyond the stars. But there is one more major project many have been quite excited for and that is the grand return of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. James Mangold is taking over the director’s chair in the fifth entry and we finally got an update during their D23 Expo panel.

Mangold revealed they are still busy preparing the score for the film. Attendees even got the first trailer for the film teasing what it has in store for many that grew up with the iconic franchise. The big reveal is that Sallah is set to return in the sequel, who was played by John Rhys-Davies.

D23: First ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Concept Art Offers First Look at Sequel

D23 is finally here and it seems that quite a few exhibits have been set up for some of Disney’s cornerstone franchises. While some of the Marvel showcases are teasing the heroes we’ve already gotten to see throughout Phase 4, it seems Lucasfilm has gone out of its way to offer some insight into what Indiana Jones 5 will look like with an exclusive exhibit featuring our first concept art for the sequel.

It’s crazy to think how little we actually still know about the project. With a new director, logan’s James Mangold, at the helm and it acting as a potential swan song for Harrison Ford in the role, who knows if this is our last hurrah with the character. Not too long ago there was a joking mention by Ford that he scared off Chris Pratt from ever thinking of taking on the role. So, we’ll see if that stays true for other actors moving forward.

  • Lucasfilm Has No Plans for Indiana Jones Films without Harrison Ford

Lucasfilm Has No Plans for Indiana Jones Films without Harrison Ford

With star actor Harrison Ford nearing the age of 80, questions could be asked about the future of the franchises he’s long been involved with. At least when it comes to Indiana Jones, it’s been confirmed that Lucasfilm doesn’t have the intention to recast the role. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed as much.

We would never make Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford. Having just finished the fifth movie, I can tell you, there wasn’t a day I wasn’t on set where I wasn’t like, ‘Yes — this is Indiana Jones.’

    Kathleen Kennedy

This is congruent with the sentiments of Kennedy to avoid recasting legacy characters in the Star Wars franchise as confirmed in the same interview. Many questions have been raised about the direction of the Indiana Jones franchise moving forward, especially with the long delays between the fourth and upcoming fifth installments. This news confirms the notion that we are probably nearing the end of seeing the titular character on the big screen; however, there certainly is room for new characters to be created that would fill the role as a spiritual successor down the road.

Indiana Jones 5 is naturally set to star a returning Harrison Ford as Doctor Henry Jones, Jr. As well, the likes of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Toby Jones, and Antonio Banderas are set to join the franchise in undisclosed roles. The James Mangold-directed project wrapped production in February of 2022 and is currently scheduled to be released on June 30, 2023.
