REPORT: Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Talks for James Bond Role

There has been one discussion that has been on everyone’s radar: who will be the next James Bond? Daniel Craig offered a memorable tenure as the character since 2006’s Casino Royale before wrapping up his time in the role with 2021’s No Time to Die. Now, the future of the franchise remains uncertain, especially with who might take on the mantle and when we can expect the next entry.

Of course, fans have their own personal choices on who would be fitting for the 007 franchise. Idris Elba has been one of the most popular choices, which even made the rounds that the producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, openly discussed its inclusion. To kick off the new year, it seems that there’s one frontrunner who has already had talks to take on the role: Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

In a new report by Puck, it seems that Taylor-Johnson has sat down with the producers on potentially taking the role. While it doesn’t mean he’ll definitely be our next bond, the fact that the meetings went well would give him a good chance. He does make for a good choice in the role, though it would be a shame if they don’t venture out more to find their next James Bond.

We still have to wait a bit longer before they start working on the next entry of the 007 era, but we do have a reality TV series in development at Amazon to tie us over. If talks do continue this year, we may know who is the next Bond by the time we inch closer to 2024.

  • Amazon Prime to Stream All 25 Bond Films For a Limited Time

Amazon Prime to Stream All 25 Bond Films For a Limited Time

Agent 007 is set to have an official home in the streaming age. It has officially been announced that that all 25 James Bond films will be available to view on Amazon Prime Video. This includes every film between the initial Dr. No, starring the late Sean Connery, to the most recent 2021 release, No Time to Die, which served as a conclusion to Daniel Craig’s run as the ever-popular character. They are planned to release on October 5, though Amazon has stated that the films will be available on the streamer “for a limited time.”

In addition to all the films arriving on Prime Video, the new documentary The Sound of 007 is set to release on the platform on October 5th as well. The documentary is set to survey the history of the character on the silver screen for the 60 years he’s been present in the zeitgeist. Mat Whitecross served as director for the project. To coincide with these James Bond-related projects, The Sound of 007: Live from the Royal Albert Hall, an exclusive recording of the live charity concert, will debut on Prime Video.

All of this news comes with recent revelations that the process of finding the next actor to portray James Bond is underway. Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have confirmed the plans to further evolve the famous character with the times and the potentially decade-long commitment that will be needed from the future face of the franchise. Ultimately, it will be interesting to follow how the world of James Bond continues into a new era of film history.

  • ‘Bond’ Producers On Idris Elba and Casting Their Next Star

‘Bond’ Producers On Idris Elba and Casting Their Next Star

James Bond will be back, he’ll just look a little different when he finally returns. The last time fans saw the iconic secret agent on the big screen, he was doing something he’d never done before – dying, and closing out an emotional arc to finish off Daniel Craig’s tenure in the role. Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who have been in charge of the Bond franchise since 1995’s GoldenEye, recently sat down with Variety to discuss what the future holds for 007 after such a definitive ending in 2021’s No Time To Die. The duo confirmed that their next leading man will be a “reinvention” of the character, something that became a necessity after Craig quote, “cracked Bond open emotionally”.

Broccoli explained a bit further with a resonating pull-quote, reflecting on the current times and looking at the years to come:

It’s an evolution. Bond is evolving just as men are evolving. I don’t know who’s evolving at a faster pace.

    Barbara Broccoli

Wilson and Broccoli also joked about Craig’s infamous distaste of the franchise’s demanding time schedule and decades-long commitment, which the producers admitted will play a role in the casting process for their next film. They explained a star like Idris Elba, who fans have long been wanting for the role, would likely be too old or too busy to put aside so much of his life for the Bond films. The elaboration of their point also revealed the official casting probably won’t happen for a while:

The thing is, it’s going to be a couple of years off. And when we cast Bond, it’s a 10-, 12-year commitment. So [Elba] is probably thinking, ‘Do I really want that thing? Not everybody wants to do that. It was hard enough getting [Daniel Craig to do it].

    Barbara Broccoli

Wilson then added in jokingly that Craig was also in his early 30s at the time of his casting, adding further fuel to the rumor that the studio is looking mainly at younger actors during their process. It’s become clear that whoever ends up as the next Bond will be around for the long haul, and will have to be prepared to focus on the franchise above all else for at least a decade of their career. Here’s hoping it doesn’t take too long before a face can be put to the world-famous name.

  • James Bond’s First Spinoff Series Ordered by Amazon As a Competition Show

James Bond’s First Spinoff Series Ordered by Amazon As a Competition Show

The first TV series based on James Bond has finally been ordered by Amazon shortly after purchasing MGM studio, but it turns out it’s not quite what you might expect. The series 007’s Road to a Million isn’t a continuation of Bond’s journey or world but rather a reality TV show. It’ll see contestants trying to win £1 million by following in the footsteps of the character with endurance and intelligence tests. Teams of two will take on the challenges while traveling the world.

Former Channel 4 executive Dom Bird will supervise the project for Amazon. The channel has been collecting quite a few UK unscripted projects like Clarkson’s Farm, All or Nothing, and more. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are working on a project that will consist of eight parts. There aren’t more details given, but it’s certainly a surprising direction for the first project to be part of the deal mainly in the form of a reality TV series.

Ironically, the project has been in development for quite some time and it’s just a coincidence that it is moving forward now that the purchase has wrapped up. It seems that it was stuck in some form of production for around four years, but it’s likely that as a result of COIVD a lot of the production was pushed back given its world traveling focus.

  • No Time to Die: How Existing Characters Can Give New Life to the World of James Bond

No Time to Die: How Existing Characters Can Give New Life to the World of James Bond

In an interview with Fandango, James Bond producer and head decision maker, Barbara Broccoli, stated that the studio doesn’t have any future plans to create spinoff projects for other characters in the franchise, saying, “We have not done [a spinoff] in the past and I don’t think we have any plans to do it in the future.” While nobody can argue with the success of the Bond franchise, the unfortunate “that’s the way we’ve always done it” mindset (the TTWWADI mindset known as “the most dangerous phrase in business”) leans far too heavily into the past at the expense of the future.

There’s been a lot of conversation lately about genderbending and/or racebending the character of James Bond in the future. The idea was met with a definitive response by outgoing Bond actor Daniel Craig who explained why he was not in favor of either of those ideas:

The answer to that is very simple. There should simply be better parts for women and actors of colour. Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?

And the reality is that those characters already exist within the orbit of James Bond, a character who, since 1953, has traveled the globe in adventures at which he has always found himself rightfully at the center. But those adventures have always been made more interesting by his supporting cast and, in the Craig films, that cast has become increasingly more diverse. No Time to Die introduced Lashana Lynch’s Nomi, a new 00, to a cast that already boasted Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny and Ben Wishaw as Q. Each of those actors not only represents an underrepresented segment of society, but also potentially fascinating characters that could expand the world of James Bond from within. Craig said “there should simply be better parts” and there already are…it’s just that Broccoli is refusing to move forward with them.

There are plenty of films, film franchises and parts of films that serve as homages to the Bond franchise; unfortunately, none of them have been developed by the Broccolis. Wright’s Felix Leiter is a CIA agent who was introduced alongside Bond in the 1953 novel, Casino Royale. Leiter has bailed Bond out and been responsible for bringing him back into the world of espionage but the character, especially with a talent like Wright behind him, has to potential to spinoff into his own world and his own adventures worthy of a Bond-esque treatment. If Leiter can hang with Bond in a Bond film, he can be the man of action in his own.

Wright’s Leiter is just one example of how Broccoli and the creatives behind the Bond franchise don’t have to work too hard to give new life to the franchise. Bond films, on average have come out every 2 years or so with the exception of a 6-year gap between License to Kill and Goldeneye. Since Craig has been in the suit, however, that average trended closer to 3 even before the pandemic delayed No Time to Die. At a time when there are more shared cinematic universes than ever before, why not fill that time between Bond films with films about characters like Leiter, Moneypenny or Q? Why not develop those characters to a place where we’re having discussions 30 years from now about who might be the next actor in a line of great actors to have played them? For now, the only answer we have is because that’s they way it’s always been…and that’s no answer at all.

  • ‘No Time To Die’ Behind Domestic Expectations But Passes $300M Worldwide

‘No Time To Die’ Behind Domestic Expectations But Passes $300M Worldwide

The final numbers are in and sadly, it seems that No Time To Die wasn’t able to pass the $60M mark in its domestic debut. After initial reports believing it could pass the $100M mark, it looks like it fell short as with each day its weekend prediction went down. As of now, it’s trailing behind the last Jason Bourne film that garnered around $59M even with its Friday being ahead of it. Still, it’s quite behind the last prediction of around $84M after its initial Friday cume.

Yet, it’s not all doom and gloom. The film is still in line with previous entries of the franchise and has shown quite the draw internationally. It’s a strong contender in Europe and is one of the few releases to head to China this year. As of now, it made around $145.5M internationally this weekend. As it was released early in some markets, it currently already passed the $300M benchmark. Still, at a budget of $250M that doesn’t include its marketing budget (ignoring additional costs due to the constant delays) and it’s going to be an uphill battle. Still, the China release could make up for it.

It’s been a somber weekend in comparison to the last. Venom: Let There Be Carnage faced a harsh drop but also has a lower production budget to balance it out. Shang-Chi managed to pass the $400M mark over the weekend, which makes it one of the best performing films of the year of ar without a China release.

  • ‘No Time to Die’ Trailing Behind ‘Spectre’s Friday Domestic Opening

‘No Time to Die’ Trailing Behind ‘Spectre’s Friday Domestic Opening

Here’s a surprising development. It seems that No Time to Die is slowing down faster than initially expected. While the earliest predictions believed it could be our first 2021 release to reach beyond $100M, recent numbers have gone down a bit with it resting around a potential $84M. After kicking off early previews with $6.4M ahead of Spectre, but it looks like it couldn’t keep up the momentum over the weekend. It managed to garner a total of $23.3M over Friday, which puts it behind Spectre’s opening of $27.4M. To give a comparison, the latter opened with $5.25M in previews.

It’s not a bad opening for the film, as it’s still close to the previous James Bond film, and is also ahead of other spy-inspired projects like Jason Bourne and Mission Impossible: Fallout. The first kicked off its Friday with $22.6M and garnered $59M, while the latter was only slightly higher. As of now, the weekend is generally lower than expectations especially due to the project’s target audiences skewing older.

Still, the film is the lowest opening for a James Bond film since Casino Royale, which made a debut with $14M. The highest earner was Skyfall in the franchise, which managed around $33M. It’s still surprising given how hard the ad campaign was pushing this as their equivalent to Avengers: Endgame. The challenge will be to see where the film ends up. Right now, it’s potentially eyeing at a lower weekend than expected, but it’s the highest non-superhero grosser since F9.

  • ‘No Time To Die’ Premieres With $6.8M, Now Eyeing $84M Domestic Weekend

‘No Time To Die’ Premieres With $6.8M, Now Eyeing $84M Domestic Weekend

There have been some surprise numbers coming out of the box office in the last few months. There has been quite a bit of uncertainty due to the Delta Variant spreading across the world, but the domestic box office has slowly recovered through theater-only releases beating expectations. Venom: Let There Be Carnage even managed to take the top spot in the box office beating out both Black Widow and Shang-Chi. Now, it seems the last Daniel-Craig-led James Bond film is on track to outperform its previous franchise entries.

Thursday preview numbers are in and the film that once was going to release in April 2020 has garnered around $6.3M. Yes, it’s behind the Venom sequel’s $11.6M and Shang-Chi‘s $8.8M, but it’s a new best for the franchise. This is primarily due to the target audience of the franchise skewing older. It beat out the last entry, Spectre, which opened to around $5.25M and ended up earning $70M in its domestic launch. So, there’s a good chance the film will end up at around $84M once the weekend is over.

Now, these numbers are quite different from the previous report. CNBC predicted that the film would become 2021’s first $100M domestic opening. While it’s looking good that the film will pass $150M worldwide, it’s still an impressive start for the franchise. F9 had a strong showing in its Thursday previews but ended with $70M when it was released. So, it’ll be interesting to see where exactly this latest entry ends up.

  • ‘No Time to Die’ May Be First $100M Domestic Opening Since Pandemic Started

‘No Time to Die’ May Be First $100M Domestic Opening Since Pandemic Started

It looks like the box office is truly recovering, as current estimates have No Time To Die set to surpass the recent record-breaker, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and potentially be the first film to pass $100M domestically in its opening weekend. The Venom sequel barely inched above the $90M mark, but this is a great sign for later-year releases. The latest James Bond flick managed to surpass international expectations.

Advanced ticket sales are currently on par with the latest major release. The film’s advertising pushed it as the Avengers: Endgame of the 007 franchise. It’ll end Daniel Craig‘s run as the character before someone else takes up the mantle, which was confirmed not to take place anytime before 2022. They utilized this “end of an era” tagline to push the film’s general marketing and it’s certainly paying off. At this point, it also bodes well for future films to do the same.

It’s been a rocky year, it wasn’t until Godzilla vs. Kong that we had some hope for recovery. Once the Delta variant reared its head, things looked a bit more depressing but cinema-only releases have been dominating the box office lately. Shang-Chi was that extra push as it far surpassed early predictions that were kept low due to the pandemic. It even continued to remain at the top spot for four weeks running. At this rate, it’s clear that the box office will continue to slowly rise in numbers. It doesn’t mean we’ll see 2019 numbers again next year, but it’ll certainly be inching closer.

  • ‘No Time To Die’ Eyeing a 90M International Opening Weekend

‘No Time To Die’ Eyeing a 90M International Opening Weekend

It hasn’t been easy for the James Bond franchise. Like many others, it faced countless delays due to the pandemic. The final entry in Daniel Craig‘s time as the British secret agent is nearing and the new marketing push has been highlighting that moment where the story that started with 2006’s Casino Royale comes to an end. As the film is set to release this week, the box office predictions are in and it’s looking good. It’s set to release in 50 markets overseas, which includes UK, Spain, Mexico, Japan, and many more. Even with its older demographic, it seems likely the film might pull in around $90M internationally.

There’s always the chance this number can change, but for an early prediction it#s quite the win for the final entry. In the UK, it seems that Bond could be its biggest opening since the last summer before the pandemic started. Once the review embargo lifts, we’ll have a clearer picture of where the film is heading and if it manages to reach 2015’s Spectre‘s $123.5M. Currently, the film’s pre-ticket sales are even outperforming 2019 ‘s numbers by 10%.

We’ve been seeing more recovery by the box office weekly. Dune even opened to a very formidable $77M internationally and it won’t release in the US until October. The big question mark is always a China release, which the film secured for October 29th. It’s going to be interesting if the last Craig-led project will dominate the box office to sign off the end of an era with a bang.
