How Mjolnir May Return in ‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’

In 2019’s SDCC, it got announced to thunderous applause that a fourth Thor film is in productionTitled Thor: Love and Thunder, the film will draw heavily from writer Jason Aaron‘s early work on the character where the God of Thunder fights one of his greatest foes, Gorr the God Butcher. He also lost his title and hammer to his former romantic partner, Jane Foster, who went on to take the mantle for herself as the Mighty Thor. As such, one could surmise that Love and Thunder exist mainly to be a passing-of-the-hammer tale in the MCU. Unfortunately for Natalie Portman‘s character, the hammer was in multiple pieces the last time we saw it. Director Taika Waititi made a concerted effort on the Comic-Con stage to let fans know that Jane Foster would indeed be holding Mjolnir when she arrives in theaters in 2022. So, how the heck are they going to pull that off? Let’s dig into three of their most likely options in an increasingly wacky order.

    Eitri and Nidavellir

Let’s face it. It isn’t the first time we’ve seen Mjolnir in shards. Thor has lost his trusted sidepiece on multiple occasions in the comics, whether it’s at the hands of the aptly-named Destroyer or his grumpy grandfather Bor. More often than not, he realizes that he can make a new Mjolnir. Marvel comics have commonly found Odinson making his way to various forging locations to put the pieces back together. Magic isn’t even always required, as the Thunderer once even managed to reconstruct the legendary hammer in a steel mill in Pittsburgh. The MCU’s Thor wouldn’t have to resort to such methods, as he’s already pals with an answer to fixing Mjolnir. We met the last of the dwarves on the dying star Nidavellir, and it doesn’t seem like a reach that he could put the hammer back together if the remnants get found in that fateful Norwegian field. Sure, the last time we saw Eitri, Nidavellir was a little worse-for-wear, but who’s to say Thor hasn’t gone back to help in the time since Thanos’ defeat? With any luck, Hulk might have even been able to bring back some of the dwarves when he reversed the Snap. This direction might be the quickest explanation for Mjolnir’s return and a great reason to give us more of giant Peter Dinklage.

    Time-Travel

Marvel Studios has already brought back Mjolnir once before through time travel. While that hammer had to be taken back to its original point in time, Waititi may attempt to go two-for-two on those shenanigans. After all, there is a precedence for this in the comics that the film is adapting. The arc that introduces Gorr takes place throughout several millennia, bringing him into conflict with a younger Thor from the Viking Age, a modern Thor we all know and love, and an older Thor who lives alone on a desolate Asgard. Gorr’s rather unusual abilities lead to all three versions of Thor fighting side-by-side against the God-Butcher on his home planet. Set photos have already leaked showing what could potentially be our first look at the said planet. If that’s the case, we could see a younger Thor bring his Mjolnir to the present-day, where it somehow ends up in the hands of Jane Foster. That reminds me, there is still an entire Disney+ series on the way based around Loki. It’s unlikely that he ends up worthy of carrying the hammer, but we may see him pull off his greatest trick and deliver Mjolnir through time and space. Actually, now that we mention Loki.

    Multiverse

If there’s one thing we know the MCU is delving into in the coming years, it’s the multiverse. Between recent revelations on WandaVision, all the rumors surrounding Marvel and Sony’s third Spider-Man film, and the literal title of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, you can bet we’re in for some “alt-u” impacts moving forward. Although complicated, we could hypothetically see a Mjolnir pop in from somewhere else in Marvel’s massive catalog of alternate worlds. Our very own Ms. Lizzie Hill suggested the idea that the hammer-wielding Jane we meet in the film could hail from a different universe, where Gorr had already done away with the Odinson, and his Mjolnir ended up in Jane’s possession. The resulting pairing between Portman and Hemsworth against Gorr could be a fitting substitute for the Thor Trio team-up from the comics, though this could lead to more questions than answers. If Kevin Feige did want to commit to a hammer from the multiverse, it would be on my wish-list that it came from Beta Ray Bill, a legend among man and horse alike. It could be unlikely, but it is just too much fun to theorize on his potential appearance.

First ‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ Set Photos Confirm the Return of Hot Thor and a Thunderstrike Costume

There’s been no shortage of Thor: Love and Thunder production news these past few weeks as stars of the film traveled to Australia to commence production. Today, the very first set photos of the highly anticipated fourth film have arrived revealing the titular character’s return to his superhero physique and some of his Guardians of the Galaxy cohorts. Check out the images courtesy of the Daily Mail.

So as you can see, Hot Thor is back which will surely draw some very interesting reactions from people who grew to love the chubby version of the character we last saw in Avengers: Endgame. It must be Casual Friday for the God of Thunder because in one photo he’s donning a totally 80’s look with his white tank top tucked into his blue jeans and in another, he’s sporting a sleeveless leather jacket that is clearly a nod to the Marvel Comics character Thuderstrike. The fact that he’s going casual while Star-Lord and the rest of the Guardians are in their space suits already makes it hilarious. It’s also nice to see Karen Gillan and Sean Gunn suit up in their respective costumes. Hopefully, we see an actual shot of Natalie Portman as Thor in the next coming weeks too.

Karen Gillan Confirms Nebula’s Return in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Just a few weeks ago, we got hints that Nebula actress Karen Gillan was joining Thor: Love and Thunder. She was sharing various photos on Instagram about her heading to Australia. Since then, it seems that more Guardians of the Galaxy were joining the production. Just yesterday, we even got the news that Matt Damon was going to become a part of the production. So far, it still has never been officially confirmed. In a recent Instagram Story, she gave away that she is indeed returning as Nebula in the upcoming Thor sequel.

I cut it the other day in preparation for Nebula, so that we don’t have to get so much hair into the bald cap because I have so much hair, it’s unbelievable. It’s just so thick.

It is still crazy to think back to when she shaved her head for Guardians of the Galaxy. While they did find a way to use a bald cap, seems her hair still doesn’t make it an easy process. It is great to finally get a confirmation on her addition. So far, only Chris Pratt‘s return as Star-Lord was officially announced, so this is a safe sign the rest of the Guardians will also make their return. They probably will only have a brief appearance in the film, as Thor took off alongside them at the end of Avengers: Endgame. There is also the possibility that we spend some time with him on various space adventures alongside the Guardians. They might have a bigger role, as they aid the Asgardian in his battle against the God Butcher. There is still some time until the film officially airs, so it will be interesting what else might get announced in the coming months.

  • Matt Damon Lands in Australia to Join ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Matt Damon Lands in Australia to Join ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Here’s an interesting surprise. It seems that while everyone was getting ready for the production of Thor: Love and Thunder, Matt Damon was also sighted alongside his family in Sidney. According to news.com.au, he arrived there for the mandatory quarantine before joining the production. This isn’t the first time he appeared in a Marvel Studios or Thor film. He had a brief sequence in Thor: Ragnarok, where he played the role of Loki reenacting The Dark World‘s death sequence. As noted by the source, it is rather unlikely he’d fly all the way to Australia and go through quarantine for just a brief cameo, so he may have a larger role in the film. There is no official word on it, so we can probably assume that it may just be director Taika Waititi who wanted to continue his running joke. Perhaps we will also see the return of Sam Neill, who played Odin in the previously-mentioned play.

The site also offers some interesting teases of the film’s upcoming production. It is currently set to invest $178 million in the local economy. As a result, it will create 2,500 jobs and work alongside 1,650 Australian businesses. They got a location incentive of $24,1 million from the Australian government. The budgets behind films are high but they play a key role in many economies, as they reinvest that money into local businesses and offer new job opportunities. They also mention that other actors are in Australia for different productions, most notably Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. Elba is especially noteworthy after his character passed away in Avengers: Infinity War. There is still a chance he may have a cameo of some kind, maybe helping Thor through the challenge that faces him.

  • Karen Gillan May Be Joining ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’s Australian Production

Karen Gillan May Be Joining ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’s Australian Production

It looks like we might have one more member of the Guardians of the Galaxy joining Thor: Love and Thunder. A while back it was confirmed that we would at least see Chris Pratt return as Star-Lord, but there was no real confirmation if the entire team of ragtag space adventurers would also make an appearance. We barely know if they play into the story in any way after Thor left with them into space at the end of Avengers: Endgame. As the production is set to start in Australia, we’ve been keeping an eye out for any member of the team heading out there. Luckily, our very own Lizzie Hill noticed the actress Karen Gillan sharing some pictures of her arrival in Australia on Instagram.

Of course, her being in Australia does not confirm her participation in the film directly. It would make sense for Nebula to appear in the film, as we also saw her on the Guardian’s ship when they left Earth. Still, her inclusion makes absolute sense, especially as Star-Lord is already confirmed to appear. I could imagine that Thor is trying to help them during one of their missions but ends up screwing up, which gets him ejected from their ship. While he has gained some of his confidence back, he might still need some time to recover mentally from the events. Marvel Studios did confirm that a part of the film will focus on Jane Foster and Valkyrie, so who knows if the Guardians are really around for much of the film. Hopefully, we get some kind of confirmation soon, but it is fun to speculate.

  • Jaimie Alexander to Return in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Jaimie Alexander to Return in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Just yesterday, we got a lot of information on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disney’s Investor Day showcased the future Disney+ series and gave some small updates on the various films that will fill out Phase 4 and beyond. We sadly didn’t get too much detail on most of the films, but it seems that we didn’t have to wait long, as Deadline has now reported Jaimie Alexander is finally returning to the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder. She was noticeably absent in Taika Waititi‘s first MCU film, Thor: Ragnarok, after we witnessed the death of the Warrior’s Three. Supposedly, Loki disguised as Odin saw her as a threat and banished her. She was among those that vanished after the snap, so it is uncertain

There is also the theory of her appearing in Loki in some capacity. It will premiere in May, so it is uncertain if they will confirm her appearance by then. Our very own Lizzie Hill heard recently from a trusted source she has a fun cameo in the Loki series. Still, it is great to see the fan-favorite character return. We have no idea what she was up to since Sif left Asgard behind and what her role will be in Love and Thunder. There have been rumors she might even get her Disney+ series at one point, which could fill in the blanks. It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it could still be in the pipeline at one point. It is also uncertain ifs he is aware that Asgard has fallen and the alien race took refuge on Earth. We’ll see whatever the future has in store for Sif and how she’ll react to what Thor has become after the events of Avengers: Endgame.

  • ‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’: Darcy’s Return for the Sequel Apparently Not in the Stars

‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’: Darcy’s Return for the Sequel Apparently Not in the Stars

Kat Dennings’ Darcy, an original character created for the MCU in Kenneth Branaugh’s Thor, has always held an interesting place in the hearts and minds of fans. When her character didn’t appear in Thor: Ragnarok, it looked like the end for her MCU journey makig the announcement at SDCC ’19 that her character would be appearing in WandaVision a major surprise. With her character back in the picture, fans have wondered if we’d see more of her in the upcoming Thor sequel, Love and Thunder, which will film early next year. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dennings shed some light on that developing situation.

Darcy Lewis | Marvel Cinematic Database | Fandom

Fans of the character should prepare themselves for a let down because while we know her good friend Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, is returning for the 4th installment in the franchise, Dennings hasn’t gotten the call from director Taika Waititi:  “No, still no idea! I don’t think I’m in it. I feel like I would have heard by now. So literally my answer is I have no idea, I have even less an idea than I did before” she told ET. Dennings did, however, speak out in support of the film and the exciting new direction for Portman’s Foster who is set to become the Mighty Thor, saying, “I thought it was genius, the most genius thing I had ever heard. I think it’s so brilliant. I mean, [Portman], you know, she’s a rock star actor, she can do anything. As a fan, I’m just excited to watch it.”

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to begin production in Australia early next year and be in theaters on February 11th,  2022!

  • ‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ to Utilize “The Volume” Virtual Production System

‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ to Utilize “The Volume” Virtual Production System

Taika Waititi got a taste of it while directing an episode of Season 1 of The Mandalorian and now he’s come back for seconds. When filming on Thor 4 kicks off at Fox Studios Australia, Waititi will have access to the LED virtual production service known as “The Volume.” After being designed, pioneered and piloted at Disney’s Manhattan Beach Studios by Jon Favreau for use on The Mandalorian, the transformative technology will be replicated (and almost certainly improved upon) by ILM at Fox Studios Australia and Pinewood UK in addition to a second set up being built in Manhattan Beach.

Making of „Star Wars: The Mandalorian“: Der Einsatz von Virtual Sets - Green Screen war gestern - seriesly AWESOME

The technology is a game changer for movie studios as it allows them to create incredibly realistic, immersive and responsive sets on location. Using hundreds (maybe thousands now?) of LED screens and a game engine, the VFX setting changes with the movement of the cameras and allows for the virtual creation of locations without green screen technology, greatly speeding up the filming process by cutting out the time needed to replace the green screen. The idea came to Favreau after working on live-action versions of The Jungle Book and Lion King, but truly originated in the mind of George Lucas who once imagined visual effects so detailed that he could film a movie from his garage. Now Lucas’ idea has come to life as one set can be transformed into location. It appears that the Pinewood “Volume” will be up and running in February 2021 and that the one being designed for Fox Studios Australia is a larger, custom version of the original that has yet to be built. Production on Thor: Love and Thunder is expected to begin early next year ahead of a February 11, 2022 release.
