Marvel Studios always has dozens of projects at various stages of development. Some are feature films, some are D+ original series and some may never make it out of development.
A report by Geeks WorldWide in October 2021 shared information regarding the development of a feature film focused on the World War Hulk storyline by Marvel Studios. Written in 2007 by Greg Pak, World War Hulk followed the Planet Hulk storyline, a book which partially inspired Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok, one of The Hulk’s last MCU outings.
What seemingly marks the return of the Hulk cinematic rights back to Marvel, also sees the return of Mark Ruffalo to a role that’s been his since 2012’s Avengers. There is no further information regarding either cast or crew but given that Bruce Banner’s next chapter will be told in the upcoming She-Hulk series, it might be possible that either Jennifer Walters or even Emil Blonsky will end up joining Banner on the big screen.
Production is eyeing a late 2022 start, making it likely that the feature will be premiering well into 2024.
A second season of the original series was confirmed in early 2021 making it the first Marvel Studios Disney+ to do so. There is still no work on production schedules, with one of the few certainties regarding season two being that director Kate Herron won’t be returning. Both Tom Hiddleston and Sophia Di Martino are expected to be reprising their roles, and with actors in other lead and supporting roles having options for a second season written into their contracts, it’s very likely we’ll be reunited with a larger number of familiar faces.
First teased by Feige at SDCC ’19, Marvel Studios Fantastic Four is one of the studio’s most highly anticipated projects. Though no date was given at the time of the announcement, it initially looked like the First Family could land in theaters as early as 2023. From the start, Solve Everything Productions, as you can read here, sounded an awful lot like someone at Marvel Studios got the ball rolling on the project.
In December 2020, it was confirmed that Jon Watts would be directing the project, but less than two years later he announced he would be taking a break from superhero movies after finishing his Spider-Man trilogy for Marvel Studios, and thus vacating the movie’s director’s chair. This left the Fantastic Four feature film without a director ahead of what’s surely an extremely important period for the project with choices needed to be made in terms of its cast.
Fantastic Four was one of the five Marvel feature films affected by an October 2022 shift in release dates. It moved from its initial November 2024 slot to February 14, 2025 and then again to May 2, 2025.
One of the biggest WandaVision highlights was Kathryn Hahn‘s performance as Agnes / Agatha Harkness, a role that garnered Hahn am Emmy nomination. So being it came with little surprise when in October 2021 a trade report announced that there was an Agatha-centric series in development at Marvel Studios. Hahn is set to return as the witch that kept herself hidden in plain sight throughout the first Marvel Studios streaming series, this time taking center-stage as the MCU expands its foray into its witchcraft mythology. After originally be titled Agatha: House of Harkness, the show’s title changed to Agatha: Coven of Chaos and then again to Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.
Jac Schaeffer, who brought Agatha to life in WandaVision, is heading up the show for Marvel Studios.
Ali Ahn, Emma Caulfield, Patti LuPone, Debra Jo Rupp and Sasheer Zamata all joined the cast as part of Agatha’s coven and Aubrey Plaza will play the mysterious Rio Vidal.
Kevin Feige himself teased the development of a Nova project over at Marvel Studios, in early 2021. Later in the year, reports came out that Fantastic Four was eyeing a 2023 production start, but also that Nova would follow a similar schedule, perhaps in preparation for a 2024 premiere.
In March 2022 the project was seemingly in development with Moon Knight‘sSabir Pirzadaset to pen a script. In early 2023, it was reported that development on Nova was paused while Marvel Studios took stock of their upcoming projects.
In late May 2021, in the unlikeliest of places (a trade report focusing on Hollywood’s Top 100 Attorneys for 2021), there was a reference to an Okoye-centered series being developed over at Marvel Studios, supposedly focusing on her origin story. Since its (proper) introduction in 2018’s Black Panther, Wakanda always felt like it had the appeal to allow for further exploration be in through movies or tv series. Chadwick Boseman‘s passing might have fast-tracked a few spin-offs and so it comes with little surprise that Okoye, one of the most beloved characters emerging from the world of the Black Panther, has been chosen as one of the faces Marvel will be focusing on.
It was revealed during The Walt Disney Company’s 2020 Investor Day presentation that Baby Groot would be featured in a number of shorts, alongside several new and unusual characters. Kristen Lepore will serve as Executive Producer and director of the series which will focus on Baby Groot’s adventures while “growing up, and getting into trouble, among the stars.”
With the release of the show’s first poster on June 5, 2022, fans got confirmation that I Am Groot would be premiering on August 10, only on Disney+. The following month there was confirmation that Bradley Cooper would be returning to voice Rocket in the show.

During the Marvel Animation panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, there was official confirmation that I Am Groot had been renewed for a second season ahead of its Disney+ premiere.
In late November 2020, Deadline reported that Deadpool 3 had found its writing team in Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin, meaning the project was finally kicking into gear. Ryan Reynolds will obviously be returning as Deadpool himself, as his name has become almost synonymous with the character ever since it got successfully rebooted in 2016’s Deadpool, after an atrocious first appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
With Ryan Reynolds announcing ‘a little sabbatical from movie making’ in October 2021, the project seemed to have been indefinitely postponed. It wouldn’t be until March 2022 that news regarding the project would finally surface. Following the streaming debut of The Adam Project, the second collaboration between Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy, it was confirmed that the latter would be directing the Merc with a Mouth‘s upcoming threequel. He’ll be the franchise’s third director following Tim Miller and David Leicht. The same day it was also learned that both Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote the first two Deadpool installments, would be returning to the writers’ table.
Deadpool 3 ended up being of the few Marvel feature films affected by an October 2022 shift in release dates. It moved two months from its initial September 2024 slot to November 8, 2024. Following the WGA and SAG strikes, Deadpool 3‘s release date was moved again–this time to July 26, 2024, amid a major overhaul of Marvel Studios theatrical release slate.
As you first heard on my Murphy’s Law podcast, Ant-Man 3 is a go! The film hasn’t been given an official release date at this point, but it is already in the early stages of set design and, prior to the COVID pandemic, was supposed to enter pre-production early in 2020 (no, that is not a typo) suggesting that it might be a much larger film than what people are expecting. Not too long ago I shared the rumor I heard that this may be the film in which Marvel Studios assembled the Young Avengers, a rumor which seems to have gained support among the fan base. If that’s the case, Ant-Man 3, directed by Peyton Reed, could close out the franchise with a large-scale universe altering film when it debuts.
Originally set to begin production in early 2021 for a February 2022 release, production on Ant-Man 3 has apparently been rescheduled for June of 2021. As of September, new wirter Jeff Loveness was still working on finishing the script and the film is still scheduled to film in the UK.
In September 2020 Deadline confirmed Jonathan Majors(Da 5 Bloods; Lovecraft Country) was to join the MCU as a lead in Ant-Man 3, being likely that he’ll be portraying none other than Kang the Conqueror.
During the Disney Investor Day on December 10, 2020, it was confirmed that the role of Cassie Lang would be recast, with Kathryn Newton stepping in to play the role.
Following what is expected to be the final post-pandemic reschedule of the Marvel Studios slate, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania has seen its premiere shifted to July 28, 2023. Six months afterward the project saw its release date changed once again. This time, trading premiere slots with The Marvels meant it would now be coming to theaters in February 2023.
