Denzel Washington has proven that you’re never too old to lead your own action franchise, as he’s been busy preparing for the third entry of The Equalizer series. Now, he has added an old co-star, as Dakota Fanning has joined the production according to a new report by Deadline. She’s joining a franchise where both previous entries managed to pull in over $190M at the worldwide box office.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘Lightyear’ Creatives on Possibility of Sequel

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Lightyear’ Creatives on Possibility of Sequel

Lightyear is yet to hit theaters, and fans of the character are already wondering if we’ll see more of Chris Evans‘ intergalactic hero in the future. Director Angus MacLane has described the film as the Star Wars of the Toy Story universe on multiple occasions, and even stated his belief that the animated series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command was a spin-off of the Lightyear movies within the world of Andy and his toys. This would imply that the film audiences are getting ready to see in our universe spawned an entire franchise in it’s own universe.

Murphy’s Multiverse got the chance to ask the Lightyear creatives about the possibility of potential sequels and spin-offs happening in the real world during a recent exclusive interview. Producer Galyn Susman expressed her belief that a second movie would be possible, but that she and MacLaren were simply focused on ensuring the successful release of the first one until further notice:

I would think that we could tell a second movie from all the ideas we rejected from the first movie, but that’s usually the case with our movies. Um, maybe? How’s that for a very definitive answer? We’re really sort of just finishing this up and launching this baby and we’re so excited to see this film out in theaters and see how people respond. And then I think we’re both going to go home and sleep for a couple weeks. We’ll think about it then.

    Galyn Susman

The film’s director was far more open to discussing future installments, but admitted that Lightyear was conceived as a stand-alone adventure within a series of adventures in Buzz Lightyear’s lifetime:

The movie was designed to be a snapshot in a moment in time. It’s not the first adventure of Buzz Lightyear and it’s not the last… I wanted to do something where we weren’t beholden to a timeline that was necessary to do all things. Because what I found as an older fan, explaining everything is not satisfying. Actually, leaving some stuff for the audience to fill in is really a way to involve them and is an engagement with the fans in a way that allows them to make their own choices. So that’s part of it, is a need to be a snapshot. So it could go on, we’ll see.

    Angus MacLaren

The gist of this answer seems to be that, while nothing is currently planned and Lightyear will work perfectly fine on it’s own, the door isn’t necessarily closed on more missions down the line. A sequel will probably depend heavily on the first film’s box office success, but if it proves to be a hit, Lightyear just might become the animated Star Wars that MacLaren has previously stated it was.

  • Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’ Eyeing a $135M+ Opening Weekend Worldwide

Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’ Eyeing a $135M+ Opening Weekend Worldwide

With Lightyear releasing in theaters in the near future, it seems that we’re finally getting some projects in on where exactly the film will perform. First estimates are giving the Toy Story spinoff a smaller estimate going into the theater due to not being a direct sequel and is potentially eyeing a $70M to $85M opening stateside. The film will make good use of Father’s day to pull in a Sunday audience plus Juneteenth is on Monday.

Internationally, the film is going to release in 43 markets, as it has been banned in specific markets. UK and Mexico are frontrunners for the market but the estimates are at around $50M+ opening internationally. As of such, the film will likely play around $135M worldwide in total by the end of the weekend.

Though it should not be underestimated that Top Gun and Doctor Strange kicked off an overall strong summer blockbuster, which is showing some of the best numbers we’ve seen since the pandemic started. So, the film may surprise us and pull in quite the audience given its legacy status. Sonic the Hedgehog left quite an impression with younger audiences that may motivate them to visit the theater again more often.

  • A Musical ‘is a Brilliant Choice for the Sequel to ‘Joker’

A Musical ‘is a Brilliant Choice for the Sequel to ‘Joker’

Nobody ever thought the Joker, of all characters, would be getting his own solo film, but here we are, over a billion dollars and a few Academy Awards later. Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips proved everyone wrong. No matter what you think about the film, it was a unique project set within a sea of other comic book media that has flooded the mainstream and become a staple in pop culture. Arthur Fleck’s story seemingly ended, so the thought that a sequel could exist much less should exist, seemed crazy. However, that’s what’s happening and the latest word on the project could turn out to be the best possible situation for a sequel.

The most important part of a sequel to Joker, a rather complete, and self-contained film, is that it really needs something to set it apart from anything that has come before it. Phillips and DC have to make this special and something super aberrant; to do so, they have to go out of the box. This makes a musical the absolute best path for the sequel; it’s something entirely unexpected and puts the project on a whole new playing field. The first film was a deep character study into who Arthur Fleck was, and what led him down this path to becoming the man who toppled a city in mere few hours. A musical is the opportunity to explore who this new Arthur Fleck is, presumably becoming, solely, the Joker from now on.

There were brief moments where we’d seen Arthur break out into random spurts of dance, experiencing moments of freedom for himself, after feeling so contained and restrained his entire life. The musical numbers could act as true expressions of who he is and who he has become; it’s an idea that is so far out of the box that could allow Phoenix to kick his performance into the next gear, and bring out some of that musical talent that we saw in Walk The Line.

Perhaps the most interesting avenue that this musical concept could tackle is the romance between Joker and Harley Quinn. The news that Lady Gaga is in talks to potentially portray Harley Quinn in the film, a character who has risen to even higher levels of popularity via Margot Robbie’s portrayal, was as surprising as the news that the sequel was in development. The film could tackle the relationship between the characters that the DCEU had only scratched. The sequel could explore the blossoming relationship between Joker and Harley Quinn, the early moments where their love seemed so perfect. Their relationship, of course, is one of the most toxic and abusive in the DC Universe, but the film can actually focus on the romanticization of the situation between the two by tackling that early love through Joker’s manipulation of Quinzel in helping him escape, and him turning her into Harley Quinn. Imagine it as something akin to the “Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend” number from Birds of Prey, where Harley imagines her interrogation as a dance number, just on a larger scale throughout the sequel. It can be a play on the classic rom-com, a massive course change from the first film, portraying a “perfect romance” which in reality is just as awful as expected.

Developing Joker: Folie À Deux as a musical is a creative and brilliant pivot from the first film, moving it into a completely new atmosphere and ensuring it doesn’t have to worry too much about riding the tails of the first film. It’s a fun idea that if executed well could be yet another unique, and fresh entry into the ever-expanding world of comic book media.

  • HBO Max Working on ‘Looney Tunes’ Musical

HBO Max Working on ‘Looney Tunes’ Musical

The whole gang is about to put the tune back in Tunes, as HBO Max and Cartoon Network are actively developing a musical titled Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Tunes Musical. Its the second musical reveal from Warner Bros. Discovery after the Joker sequel was teased to take that direction with Lady Gaga in talks to join as Harley Quinn. According to Deadline, the film will feature an original song and dance numbers, as well as orchestrations of some classic WB musicals. The story is as follows:

After starring in a long-running Looney Tunes Broadway smash production, an exhausted Bugs Bunny decides it’s time to trade in sold-out shows for life as a regular rabbit. Ever the spotlight opportunist, Daffy Duck attempts to step into the lead role, but his star ambitions are quickly sidetracked when he is kidnapped by an obsessive fan who has more sinister plans for her favorite stage duck. With his ticket to Broadway retirement in danger, Bugs sets off on a rescue mission to find Daffy and, with the help of his Looney Tunes co-stars, hopefully, his joy of performing again.

Amy Friedman, Warner Bros. Head of Kids & Family Programming, has pointed out that it’ll offer “old Hollywood and Broadway vibes” as it offers the usual mayhem we’re used to from the Looney Tunes. The announcement follows shortly after a preschool series was also announced titled Bugs Bunny Builders. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert‘s Ariel Dumas and Next to Normal‘s Tom Kitt is set to write the screenplay and lyrics. It’ll be interesting to see what this take on the iconic cartoon characters might have to offer for young and old. Here’s hoping Elmer Fudd gets to scream “Kill the wabbit” at least once.

  • Miranda Otto to Return as Eowyn in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Anime Film

Miranda Otto to Return as Eowyn in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Anime Film

While all eyes are on the upcoming big-budget live-action prequel The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, we also have a new animated film on the horizon. The War of the Rohirrim promises to tell the story of what happened to the House of Helm Hammerhand, which was part of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s appendix. They have now announced the voice cast for the series. The big surprise is the return of Miranda Otto, who played Eowyn in the original films by Peter Jackson.

She’ll be joined by Succession‘s Brian Cox, who’ll play King of Rohan alongside Gaia Wise (A Walk in the Woods), who’ll play Hammerhand’s daughter Hero. The ruthless Dunlending lord, Wulf, will be voiced by Snowpiercer‘s Luke Pasqualino. The story will take place before the events of the original novels as we learn the story of the fortress Hornburg, one that would eventually be known as Helm’s Deep.

The voice cast is also joined by Lorraine Ashbourne, Yazdan Qafouri, Benjamin Wainwright, Laurence Ubong Williams, Shaun Dooley, Michael Wildman, Bilal Hasna, Janine Duvitski, and Jude Akuwedike. So, the film by director Keni Kamiyama has quite an impressive voice cast and will be the first anime adaptation of the franchise. Philippa Boyens, who was part of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit‘s screenwriting team, is attached to produce alongside Joseph Chou of Blade Runner: Black Lotus fame.

  • New ‘Black Adam’ Promo Art Offers a Closer Look at Hawkman’s Full Design

New ‘Black Adam’ Promo Art Offers a Closer Look at Hawkman’s Full Design

It looks like more promotional art has found its way from Black Adam. While a big highlight of these visuals was in the form of the titular character as well as offering a tease of the upcoming silver screen debut of the Justice Society of America. While the JSA has some iconic members and we got our first look ahead of the recent trailer drop through Funko Pops, it does seem like new promotional material has surfaced, as shared by Twitter user @TaurooAldebaran.

What stands out this time around is we get a new wingless look at Hawkman. Aldis Hodge is taking on the task of bringing the iconic JSA member to the silver screen and it finally gives us a confirmation of his iconic battle mace. He also seemingly will have a shield that’ll definitely help him in his fight against Black Adam that was teased in earlier promotional material.

We still know very little about the film and the trailer has seemingly stuck to only teasing a small part of the overarching story. It does try to paint the picture that the JSA is going to face off against Adam, but it does seem like there are other threats in the future, especially one with their different ideologies. Still, his overall design is great and we can’t wait to see more of Hodge‘s Hawkman when the film releases later this year.

  • UPDATE: Amber Heard Not Cut From ‘Aquaman’ Sequel

UPDATE: Amber Heard Not Cut From ‘Aquaman’ Sequel

Despite a report to the contrary, a spokesperson for Amber Heard has stated that the actress will not be removed from the upcoming DC film Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom.

Referencing a report from Just Jared, Heard’s spokesperson had the following to say, “The rumor mill continues as it has from day one — inaccurate, insensitive and slightly insane.” The previous report stated that Heard’s role would be entirely recast and her scenes reshot following the conclusion of the defamation trial with her ex-husband, Johnny Depp.

While Heard’s role in the Aquaman sequel was said to be considerably smaller than her role in the first film, it would still be expensive and problematic for Warner to cut her, recast her and reshoot the scenes. It’s possible that Heard’s role as Mera, Aquaman’s love interest, might be recast for future appearances in the DC universe, but for now it seems that the actress will remain on board through her already filmed appearance.

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom will hit theaters March 17th, 2023.
