  • Daniela Melchior Set to Appear in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

Daniela Melchior Set to Appear in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

After being at the center of speculation for months, Daniela Melchior has been confirmed to have joined the cast of Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Melchior’s social media activity had fans convinced she would be a part of the expanded cast for the threequel, with many speculating that she would be playing Moondragon, who is canonically the daughter of Drax in Marvel Comics. And while director James Gunn ruled out the idea of her playing Moondragon, he never outright denied Melchior would have a role in the film.

With her casting now confirmed by a Hollywood trade report, speculation will begin anew about who Melchior, who first worked with Gunn on the DC Comics film, The Suicide Squad, might be playing. While there is no guarantee she’s playing a member of the Guardians, rumors have persisted that this film will see a new group of heroes take over for the current team. Should those rumors turn out to be true, Melchior could be playing the MCU’s version of Phyla-Vell (a character who I have heard is due to appear in the MCU), a one-time member of the Guardians and a character with connections to several characters in the larger MCU.

In the comics, Phyla is the daughter of the Kree hero Mar-Vell. The character played a large role in the Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest events and, eventually, wore the Quantum Bands and took on the mantle of Quasar. Speculation has already begun that the bracelet worn by Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel might be one half of the pair of Quantum Bands, and it’s been revealed by Marvel Studios that the changes to Khan’s powers were made to make her inclusion in the upcoming feature film The Marvels make a bit more sense. The inclusion of Phyla-Vell in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could put her on the board as someone who might eventually try to lay claim to the bands. All speculation, of course, but sensible.

Melchior joins Chukwudi Iwuji as actors to have worked with Gunn on a DC Comics’ adaptation and make the jump to the MCU. Iwuji, who starred in the HBO Max streaming series Peacemaker, looks to be playing the High Evolutionary, the main antagonist of Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 5, 2023.

  • New ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Crew Merch Teases a New Guardians Logo

New ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Crew Merch Teases a New Guardians Logo

It looks like some more wrap gifts have found their way online from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 productions. While it doesn’t give us any big revelations or teases for the future entry, it does include one rather interesting detail. markmantastic has taken to his TikTok account to share some of the best and worst wrap gifts he received while working on various films. He included in one video a look at a new jacket from Vol. 3 that includes a brand new logo on the sleeve of the jacket, as shared by @dano_cosmic alongside other little details from crew merch.

The original logo seemed strongly inspired by the Nova Corps from the first film, but the updated one has quite a bit more texture to it. There are added elements, but it’s unclear if it finds their way into the actual film. The original log wasn’t highlighted in the first two films, but we did see some set photos of the team wearing an actual uniform. So, it may be part of that as the family unites to face their biggest threat yet. The neon-esque design is also an interesting detail that may be a signifier of which direction director James Gunn is going with the threequel’s visual palette.

It wouldn’t be surprising to have Gunn go all out with this potentially being his last entry in the franchise. So, we might expect the most emotional storyline of them all, which is not an easy task after the gut punch that was Yondu’s death in Vol. 2. The fact Rocket is highlighted in the cap and he’s been a character that’s been heavily highlighted for taking center stage in the upcoming story does continue to add pressure to the many theories surrounding the project.

  • REVIEW: ‘Hollywood Stargirl’ Offers Less Quirk But More Heart

REVIEW: ‘Hollywood Stargirl’ Offers Less Quirk But More Heart

While the first Stargirl film was inspired by the original novel by Jerry Spinelli, its sequel, Hollywood Stargirl, is a very different story. While her name was in the title of the last entry, it wasn’t truly her story. This time around, Grace VanderWaal is taking the spotlight with director Julia Hart returning as well. Yet, the rest of the cast and the location has changed to offer a subtler yet heart-warming film. Hollywood Stargirl uses its new location to tell a story of what it’s like chasing your dreams, and even finding out what those could be.

When the film starts off, you know something is different. The narration of the original is gone, and we swiftly get our reintroduction to Stargirl Caraway. While things have changed, some aspects stay the same like her love for singing. We even get to meet her pet rat Cinnamon. What changed is that Stargirl is the center point of the story, and we actually get an inner turmoil of her not wanting to constantly move across the States. Her mother, now played by Judy Greer, promises that she’ll get to at least end her first year.

VanderWaal gives a charming performance once again, but there’s one aspect that definitely stands out. While she still has her quirky moments, it definitely feels quite toned down in comparison to the first. What is pushed to the forefront is her love for money, and she’s become quite a bit more selfish. She isn’t the same girl from Mica, Arizona that did her best to make everyone around her feel better; it’s her time to think about what she wants.

That is especially challenged when she meets brothers Evan (Elijah Richardson) and Terrell (Tyrel Jackson Wiliams), who both inspire her to do the thing she loves, not because it makes someone else happy but because it’s something she adores. It creates a nice change of pace from the first film, as it moves away from the manic pixie dream girl scenario of the first. The trio carries the film, as their filmmaking venture certainly evokes that feeling of what one thought of as a kid: if I never try, I’ll never know.

Yet, it does suffer from a somewhat perfect ending. perhaps it’s a more cynical outlook but most of the drama happens off-screen for this project with one vital moment when things simply don’t go the way Stargirl expected towards the final act of the film. Yet, there’s no real solution that is worked for, but rather something that conveniently falls together as required by the story. It’s a feel-good story at the end of the day, but it doesn’t challenge its characters throughout to push them beyond the way they were at the beginning of the film.

The problem is that most things conveniently fall into the lap of our young trio while the adults seemingly suffer throughout the story. Uma Thurman‘s Roxanne Martel and Greer‘s Ana Caraway are reflections of the core themes yet while everything seemingly goes swimmingly for the new generation, they are the main focus of the drama. Yet, that very drama is something that’s told mostly off-screen with us catching up with them in-between rather than spending time to really get a feeling for what’s going on.

There are definitely teases throughout, most notably with Ana, but it felt more like a set-up than exploring the very emotional core of that experience. It doesn’t take away from the heart of the narrative, which is generally a charming reflection of working to make your dreams come true. Judd Hirsch‘s Mr. Mitchell felt like the perfect balance, as while he’s left that work behind, he’s swept away by the inspirational events unfolding with his neighbors. His place in the story feels like the balance that the others required; an anchor in a way.

Of course, there’s a lot more to this film than just its overarching story. Julia Hart is once again bringing that visual charm from the first but gives it a different visual flourish to stand out from its predecessor. There’s a more mature tone to the sequel that builds upon the visual flourishes of the first but highlights the move from the deserts of Arizona to the unique offerings of California. It’s not a reinvention but definitely an evolution.

The music is once again a highlight, especially with VanderWaal‘s original song “Figure it Out” being a standout in the film. There’s a certain charm to this kind of music that adds a little something to these projects and it’s great to see her once again leave her mark on the film. Though a big part of the film’s charm also lies in composer Michael Penn‘s soundtrack, who took over from Rob Simonsen.

Overall, Hollywood Stargirl focuses more on what made the first film stand out, especially in the heart it brings and the message it conveys. While it does somewhat undermine that very message by keeping a generational focus on success, it still offers a feel-good story that stands on its own to inspire those still trying to find their path. Even with a lack of conflict, there’s a charm in the direction offered and sometimes, especially these days, it’s good if the hurdles laid in front of us can be stepped over rather than requiring a considerable start-up to overcome. Dreams sometimes come true, other times they don’t, but at least one tried.

  • ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Ends Memorial Day Weekend With Massive $160.5M

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Ends Memorial Day Weekend With Massive $160.5M

It looks like Top Gun Maverick managed to pull up even more momentum than predictions set and has officially passed the $160M mark over the four-day Memorial Day weekend. The key audience of 35+ moviegoers has returned to push this film and it seems it was exactly what they were waiting for to see with the pandemic keeping them from visiting theaters.

Originally the film’s lowest openings were at the conservative $95M and it’s the second film after the pandemic to start to truly beat expectations, as did Spider-Man: No Way Home last December. Paramount’s domestic distribution president Chris Aronson had the following to say about its success:

I think it opens the door to what is possible.

    Chris Aronson

IMAX president Megan Colligan also highlighted that this may be just the start with other strong contenders hitting theaters soon, which include Jurassic World: Dominion, Elvis, Lightyear, Minions: Rise of Gru, and Thor: Love and Thunder.

A whole segment of moviegoers have just come out for first time. Top Gun is an exceptional movie, and there is a really excellent lineup of movies coming down the pike. You really need that one-two-punch.

Top Gun had a 55% purchase by 35 years and older viewers with 18% even being older than 55 years. In comparison, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ ticket buyers were predominantly younger with 66% below the age of 34 years. Yet, 21% of younger audiences also came to check out the new Top Gun film, highlighting the interest of cross-generations, most likely a family bonding event for parents sharing their nostalgia with their children.

It further highlights the potential of older skewed films drawing in an audience once again, but there’s a chance that it may also be a film that happened to release at the perfect time. As people have reached a boiling point with the pandemic and may be looking for that feeling that this film provides. The potential is that this film leads to a future with a stronger balance and diversity in cinema, which helps further develop all genres and entries.

  • ‘West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler Joins ‘The Hunger Games’ Prequel

‘West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler Joins ‘The Hunger Games’ Prequel

It looks like the rumors surrounding Rachel Zegler‘s next major production were real as Variety has just broken the news that she will be joining the upcoming The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The actress recently teased that she may have a role with a tweet last Monday night where the first letters spell out the main character’s name, Lucy Gray Baird.

    https://twitter.com/rachelzegler?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1531244647510683649%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fvariety.com%2F2022%2Ffilm%2Fnews%2Frachel-zegler-hunger-games-prequel-lucy-gray-baird-1235281420%2F

Now that the news has officially dropped, she confirmed that it was indeed an intentional tweet to catch people’s attention. The film will adapt the book by the same name which was published in 2020 by Suzanne Collins. It explores the early days of Coriolanus Snow, who would eventually become the tyrannical ruler of Panem and the one to make Katniss Everdeen’s life a living hell.

The movie will explore Snow as he mentors Zegler‘s Lucy Gray Baird, who is a tribute from District 12 during the 10th Hunger Games. Gray sees in her the potential to unleash his own ambitions after she sings during the opening reaping ceremony. Zegler‘s history with musicals makes her the perfect choice for the role, as she just recently wrapped work on Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently filming the live-action adaptation of Snow White for Disney.

  • ‘Stranger Things’ “Dear Billy” Confirms Shawn Levy is the Perfect Choice for ‘Deadpool 3’

‘Stranger Things’ “Dear Billy” Confirms Shawn Levy is the Perfect Choice for ‘Deadpool 3’

There were many reactions when it was announced that Shawn Levy was going to tackle the third entry of Ryan ReynoldsDeadpool series. In a way, it wasn’t too much of a surprise after the director and actor tackled Free Guy and The Adam Project back-to-back. He already proved his ability to tackle pop culture references and Reynold‘s usual brand of humor. Yet, there was one key ingredient that he just proved with his work on the Stranger Things Season 4 episode “Dear Billy.” He knows how to direct powerful emotional moments.

It may sound strange, but while Deadpool#s quips and fourth-wall-breaking humor were generally his trademarks, the once 20th Century Fox franchise added one element that many overlook from his comic roots. Wade Wilson is a very tragic character that masks everything that has happened to him with the insanity that destroyed his view of his entire existence. The first two Deadpool films highlighted just how important that “human” element was when they explored his relationship with Morean Baccarin‘s Vanessa.

The romance in the first film had its high points, but it was in the final moments where it truly came together in 2018’s Deadpool 2. The sequence when he finally gets to meet her again after her tragic death earlier in the film with an acoustic rendition of a-ha’s Take on Me hits like a dump truck of emotions. Even as he throws outlines, there’s something sincere and sweet that you wouldn’t expect from a comedy like this.

With Levy taking on the third entry, there was some worry that the focus would mainly remain on the comedy aspects. Yet, his work on “Dear Billy” confirmed, at least for me, that the director is definitely one that can bring that emotional punch. The emotional arc of Sadie Sink‘s May Mayfield having to struggle with what may be her untimely death at the hands of Vecna was one of the season’s strongest.

The emotional arc is rounded out by Max’s escape from the hands of Vecna through her favorite song, Kate Bush‘s Running Up That Hill which punctuated the sequence at its emotional arc. Besides the bonus side effect of the episode leading to the song once again hitting the Billboard Hot 100, it highlights that he is just as capable of tackling the humor, action, and heart that makes any Deadpool story stand out as more than just a fourth-wall-breaking comedy.

Reynolds has proven he can pull off both, and it would be a shame not to continue his arc built around his connection with Vanessa. If they stick with her still being dead, there is an iconic story element that could be explored. The ending has implied he went back in time to save her life, and there’s a chance that this may have led to some shenanigans far beyond his own control; at least that he’d care to consider it. No matter how much the merc with a mouth throws out, as long as that emotional throughline remains, we’re in for what could become Marvel Studios’ funniest and most emotional entry yet.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Grace VanderWaal on Tackling the Leading Role in ‘Hollywood Stargirl’

EXCLUSIVE: Grace VanderWaal on Tackling the Leading Role in ‘Hollywood Stargirl’

Hollywood Stargirl is a special kind of sequel. While it continues the Disney+ film from 2020, which was only known as Stargirl, it takes a very different direction. In a world where adaptations tend to follow the books closely, director Julia Hart wanted to take the character in a very different direction. Instead of sticking to the small town of Arizona, Stargirl Caraway is heading to Hollywood.

In an exclusive interview with Stargirl herself, Grace VanderWaal, I got the chance to ask her about taking on the leading role from Graham Verchere, who played Leo Borlock in the first film. She shared about what it was like taking on that responsibility and also prepared herself for taking on the bigger role going in.

It was a lot of pressure because the first movie has a lot to do with Leo. The movie is called Stargirl but I feel like I wasn’t the main character. So, just personally, like professionally, I was preparing myself for that amount of work and being in every scene and all that. Just taking on that responsibility. But it was so fun, it didn’t feel like hard work.

    Grace VanderWall

She also shared about what it was like finding out that they wouldn’t be following the books but rather taking a different direction. she also highlighted that to her it was “the right thing to do.”

All I know is that I wasn’t really surprised when I was told what it was going to be different from the books. I don’t know what I expected but It felt right, it felt like the right move when I heard about it. I don’t know why, but that makes like perfect sense, that was the right thing to do.

    Grace VanderWall

It definitely takes the story in an interesting new direction and offers something unique to those that followed Stargirl’s story in Jerry Spinelli‘s novel, Love, Stargirl. VanderWaal is joined by a new cast consisting of Elijah Richardson, Judy Greer, Tyrel Jackson Williams, Uma Thurman, Judd Hirsch, and more. The film will release on June 3rd on Disney+.

  • Naked Chris Hemsworth is ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Trailers Most Replayed Moment

Naked Chris Hemsworth is ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Trailers Most Replayed Moment

We were all quite excited when we got the second trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, as it offered our first clear look at Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. We even got a good look at Russell Crowe as the Greek god Zeus, who had some fun by flicking off Thor’s disguise. He ended up overdoing it, as it lead to Chris Hemsworth‘s God of Thunder standing without his clothes on. It seems that this joke has become quite the hit with fans, as ComicBook.com noticed that it this part is the trailer’s most replayed moment.

    via ComicBook.com

It’s definitely no surprise that this moment may have caught everyone’s glimpse, as Hemsworth went all out with his training for his return as the Thunderer. Even earlier set photos including him showed off just how trained he got, as his arms seemed like they doubled in size since the last time we saw him on screen.

Taika Waititi might also just be a marketing genius, as Hemsworth‘s special training isn’t the only thing that people are talking about. Natalie Portman not only returned to play Jane Foster but also went all out with her training, as many noticed just how ready she was to take on the role of Mighty Thor. Perhaps they are also hiding just how chipped Korg’s rocks have gotten since the last time we saw him growing moss while playing video games on a comfy couch.

  • ‘Top Gun Maverick’ Takes ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’s Spot as Memorial Day Weekend’s Highest Opening Ever

‘Top Gun Maverick’ Takes ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’s Spot as Memorial Day Weekend’s Highest Opening Ever

It looks like word-of-mouth is definitely pushing Tom Cruise‘s Top Gun Maverick to new heights. Not only did its Sunday remain surprisingly strong, but the film is now at an impressive $156M. As such, it’ll now beat Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End to take the crown of Memorial Day weekend’s biggest opening. There is a chance that it could still go higher and potentially reach $160M but either way it has definitely taken the crown this weekend.

The old-school blockbuster has been a revelation for many that were looking for a pause in superhero fare. While one could argue that the way these jet pilots fly isn’t quite human either, Top Gun Maverick definitely connected with audiences over the weekend. For those wondering if this is the end of superhero cinema, it’s more a sign that we’ll see a bigger balance moving forward if studios learn the right lessons from this film’s success.

Tom Cruise is a very unique kind of actor, who has a strong hand over his projects. The film’s success may also bode well for next year’s Mission Impossible film, which smartly released an early trailer alongside this film. The strong success of Everything Everywhere All At Once has also re-established a new position for small and medium-sized projects within the market. A good balance of both crowd-pleasing blockbusters like genre-specific fairs alongside unique offerings for various age groups joined by smaller productions offering creative alternatives could not only revive a full blockbuster post-pandemic but push its development further.

  • ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Continues to Top Expectations, Gunning for $255M+ Worldwide Opening Weekend

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Continues to Top Expectations, Gunning for $255M+ Worldwide Opening Weekend

It’s a true summer box office revival as Top Gun: Maverick is on its way to hype up the industry’s upcoming releases with a record-breaking Memorial Day release. Not only is it beating early expectations, but the return of Tom Cruise as Pete Mitchell after 36 years will establish Paramount’s most successful release at the box office yet. As of now, it’s eyeing $120M for a three-day opening and would still end its four-day weekend at $150M after pulling in $51.8M on Friday. Comscore’s senior media analyst Paul Dergarebedian had to follow to say on the actor pulling gin these numbers.

Tom Cruise is one of the few true movie stars left in the business. His name on the marquee means something to audiences who have come to trust that his films will be worth every dollar of that movie ticket purchase.

    Paul Dergarebedian

The film has a strong pull for a four-day weekend and its massive critical success is pulling in a lot. It’s even beating out other Paramount releases to take the top spots and create a new benchmark for the studio. Internationally, the film is beating its $80M projects and is on its route to potentially pulling in $125M over 3-days, which would hint at a potential $255M opening weekend worldwide. It’s generally a great performance and it’ll be interesting to see how its legs perform.

A+ rating and strong word-of-mouth are definitely playing in its favor, which hasn’t been seen since Spider-Man: No Way Home. So, the film could be another exception within the market but its second weekend will be interesting to see. The strong performance is also thanks to an older demographic which came at the cost of Downtown Abbey: A New Era which dropped 76% in its second weekend as it has a similar base older audience.
