The king of the seven seas is set to make his big return in Aquaman andthe Lost Kingdom. Plot details are still very much under wraps and much of the films casting has yet to be made public but looks to be making some moves as multiple new cast members have joined the upcoming sequel to the 2018 hit.
If you couldn’t get enough of King Shark in The Suicide Squad, another shark seems to be making their way too the DCEU as Indya Moore has been cast as Karshon. Jani Zhao will play Stingray, an original character created for the movie, though it is unknown if she will be friend or foe.
Vincent Regan will play King Atlan in a recast from the original film. The role was originally played by GrahamMcTavish and is unknown why the role was not reprised, possibly due to his involvement in House of the Dragon. Randall Park will also return as Dr. Stephen Shin who featured in a smaller role in the original film.
Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom Is currently set to release in theaters on December 16th, 2022.
Information on Marvel Studios Secret Invasion streaming series has been tough to come by with little more than a handful of casting announcements making their way out via the trades. Of those announcements, Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Colman’s generated a great deal of buzz. Her role, like co-stars Emilia Clarke’s and Kingsley Ben-Adir’s, have been kept secret, but Murphy’s Multiverse is now able to share a few tidbits about Colman’s character.
While Disney and Marvel Studios are working hard to keep her character’s identity a secret, we can share that Colman is portraying a mysterious spy with a commanding “Fury-esque” presence. Indeed the series will be as spy-heavy as expected, with a half-dozen spy roles, including this one. Like Fury, Colman’s character will be a bit of a puppeteer who does and has done a lot of her dirty work behind the scenes. We’ve also learned that in addition to Colman’s character being a major player in Secret Invasion, she’s also set to return in the role in other projects down the road.
We’ve already seen Marvel Studios introduce Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine into the mix of shadowy characters with their own agendas; adding Colman as another master spy with a bit of a European influence (as you know from previous reports, Secret Invasion is doing a lot of location filming in and around the UK) will expand the universe and also make it a little less trustworthy. Secret Invasion should begin principal photography soon and is expected to stream on Disney Plus in 2022.
After a long wait, we’re finally getting the third and final entry of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. James Gunn will return to the director’s chair after his time with DC’s The Suicide Squad. The best part, we’re also getting a Disney+ Christmas Special ahead of the third film’s release. Gunn did confirm in July that it’s going to connect with Vol. 3, but it seems some curious secrets will be revealed in the upcoming special.
Of course, he doesn’t reveal what exactly that means, but the special will likely connect Thor: Love and Thunder with the third film. So, we’ll get our first hint a the main plotline that will drive the Guardians on their final journey. The secrets in question might also reference some curious revelations between the team, such as the origin of Rocket. There were some hints that the upcoming threequel will focus on Gamora and Nebula, which could come into play as well.
By the end of business today, Marvel Studios Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings will surpass Marvel Studios Black Widow to become the highest grossing U.S. release in 2021. The Pandemic Box Office has been fickle but Shang-Chi has held course through 3 weeks and now actually looks set to be #1 at the U.S. box office for a 4th week.
Shang-Chi enters September 24th only $200,000 behind Black Widow, has been averaging a little more than $1.6M the last 3 days and should have enough momentum to earn another $10M at the box office this weekend which should be plenty to keep the #1 spot, especially as Dear Evan Hansen looks to be a bomb. If everything stays on track, Shang-Chi should cross the $200M mark in the U.S. sometime next week, making for an impressive theatrical haul in the midst of the pandemic.
Shang-Chi‘s success has emboldened Disney to keep its next Marvel Studios film, Eternals, as a theatrical exclusive opening on November 5th. The film will feature another set of unknown characters, like Shang-Chi, but boasts an ensemble cast full of big names. Shang–Chi is the champ but the question now becomes how long will it hold the belt.
Here’s a rather surprising reveal during a Nintendo Direct. We got our first official announcement for the upcoming Super Mario film adaptation by Illumination. Not only is the film set to release Holiday of 2022 with North America getting a definite release on December 21st, but we also got a glimpse into the film’s rather massive cast. Chris Pratt will play Mario and will face off against Jack Black‘s Bowser. Seth Rogen will take on the role of Donkey Kong while Peach is played by Anya Taylor-Joy. You can check out the full cast list alongside the poster right here:
Chris Pratt as Mario Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach Charlie Day as Luigi Jack Black as Bowser Keegan-Michael Key as Toad Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike Surprise cameos from Charles Martinet
It’s great that Charles Martinet, the original voice of most of the Super Mario characters, will have cameos throughout the film. Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong is also quite a curious addition. In the game’s lore, Cranky is the original Donkey Kong you face off before even Mario got his name. It also matches up with the reveal that a character from the 1985 game, Wrecking Crew, getting added, as we’ll explore the early days of our unlikely hero. Shigeru Miyamoto did highlight that Mario will talk quite a bit, which makes sense with them hiring Chris Pratt in the role. We’ll still have to wait for our official look and here’s hoping we get to see Illumination’s vision in the near future.
Details about Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania are still scarce ahead of its February 17, 2023 release date. Filming began in early 2021 and is expected to continue into 2022, but we may have learned another kernel of information about the cast.
According to his Spotlight profile, actor Joshua Collins is set to play a character named “Derrick” in the film. Collinsis a British-American actor known for roles in movies What’s Love Got To Do WithIt (2021) and Against the Law (2016) among others.
Collins’ role as Derrick is presumably small, but time with tell how he will stack up next to Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, and Johnathon Majors whose Kang the Conquerer is set to make his film debut in Quantumania.
It looks like Loki‘s Natalie Holt has already found her next project. The composer took to Twitter to announce that she’ll be working on the upcoming HBO Max film Batgirl. Last we heard of the project, they were preparing to film in Glasgow and it seems that production is picking up the pace if they already added their composer. The unique soundtrack of the Disney+ series was a standout and makes her addition an exciting prospect on what direction they might take.
Holt has built up quite the reputation in the industry with her work on Paddington, Deadwater Fell, and BBC’s Wallander. She’s even played the closing ceremony of the Olympic games, as she’s an accomplished violinist. It’s exciting to see her join another comic book adaptation to lend her unique voice to the industry. We cannot wait to listen to what she has planned for her Batgirl soundtrack.
There has been much debate on the Venom franchise’s choice on a PG-13 rating. In the first film, the character chews off someone’s head and is no stranger to darker stories. Yet, they still went with the audience rating that draws in the most viewers. It wasn’t a surprise that the sequel would share the same rating, but it looks like it was on the table at some point in development for Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Tom Hardy does confirm they’ve explored the potential of an R-rating. Yet, it seems they wanted to not limit their choices based on the comics, but rather focus strongly on what was right for the film’s overall tone.
100% we considered it. With all of these symbiotes, you know, you consider it. You read the comic books and it is extreme, but that’s not what we’re here to do. We came here to make a movie which, and correct me if I’m wrong, I mean, there’s a law and a rule into creating a movie that’s accessible to a lot of people, as well as that caters for everybody, including the hardcore fans.
Tom Hardy
He does go on to say that they wanted to stay true to Carnage as much as possible, highlighting the scene where he stuffs his tongue down one person’s throat.
So I hope the hardcore fans at least take home that they look at Carnage and go, ‘Yeah, I recognize Carnage from the comic books. I’m happy with that.’ And yeah, no, we didn’t bite everybody’s head off, but we did stick a tongue down someone’s throat pretty… and managed to come in at a level of rating which is reputable so that grandma can come but also I’ll come watch it too.
Tom Hardy
The comment of wanting to watch a film titled Venom with grandma is quite a funny idea. Mine would already hit her limit with the whole gooey alien monster that takes over human bodies to kill strangers. Still, it’s great they are putting the film’s overall theme first instead of forcing a rating in. Director Andy Serkis does tease they also want to leave some moments to the viewer’s imagination. LoganandDeadpoolproved the potential of an r-rated project, but not every director will feel comfortable with it. So, here’s hoping that Carnageremains true to his name throughout the film.
Marvel Studios Assemble has become a new format for the company to showcase behind the scenes of their new Disney+ series. Yet, it seemed like they might avoid releasing episodes focused on their various film releases, as they are normally included with the physical release. Yet, it seems that they might get a focus after all, as a special look behind-the-scenes episode might release on October 20th for Black Widow.
The release makes sense if you consider that Black Widow will be available to all subscribers as of October 6th. So, they’ll take a similar approach with their shows releasing the Assembled episode sometime after its Disney+ release. We just got the announcement that Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings will release on Disney+ as of November 12th. So, we could expect an episode on it around two weeks later as well. Unlike the series, they are a one-time release and there’s no real build-up from one episode to the next, which might be the reason there’s a long wait between releases. It gives the film some additional life as people might want to check it out alongside the Assembled episode.
It’ll be interesting if the Disney+ episodes offer some additional footage that isn’t available on the physical releases to make it stand out. Disney’s main goal is always to draw in new subscribers. As such, it might be an initiative to get some eyes to check out footage that is only available on the streaming service. We don’t have an official announcement on the release, but we’ll likely get a poster in the coming weeks to confirm this release.
It looks like the next installment in the Harry Potter spinoff, Fantastic Beasts, got a new release date, as it’s now set to release on Easter weekend next year. To be precise, the David Yates film is heading to theaters on April 15th, 2022. It originally was going to release in July of that same year but got pushed earlier which may be a good sign for its production. The last we heard of the production was last year when Mads Mikkelsen replaced Johnny Depp in the role of its main antagonist. The news also came with the official reveal of the subtitle The Secrets of Dumbledore on Twitter.
The series continues to slowly move away from its main protagonist to focus on the feud between Gindelwald and Dumbledore. The Wizard World sequel also received the following logline to tease what crazy story Eddie Redmayne‘s Newt Scamander gets pulled into:
Professor Albus Dumbledore knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?
The prequel series takes place decades before Harry Potter even set foot in Hogwarts and continues to expand upon wizarding history. Jude Law took over the role of a young Albus Dumbledore and will return in the upcoming film in the titular role.
