Simu Liu Shares His Hopes for the Upcoming ‘Shang-Chi’ Sequel

One of 2021’s best surprises was Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. After the film’s financial and critical success, it was given the green light for a sequel with director Destin Daniel Cretton signed on to return. The possibilities for the next entry seem endless, but franchise star Simu Liu already knows what he’d like to see happen when his titular hero returns to the big screen.

At the end of Ten Rings, Shang-Chi finds himself in possession of his father’s iconic weapons, the aforementioned Ten Rings. In a conversation with Complex Canada, Liu stated that he’d love to explore how his character handles this development:

I think just what Shaun decides to do with all this newfound power, you know? It kind of consumed his father, consumed Wenwu. I’m curious as to how someone much younger, much more inexperienced, would fare against the rings. Just this idea of all of a sudden being gifted something that’s so powerful but also so dangerous.

As he continued, the actor revealed that he’s also very interested in seeing Shang-Chi interact more with the wider MCU, such as participating in some fun team-ups.

And then the other big question I have is, you know, in what way does Shaun fit in with the rest of the MCU? Who are you going to see? What kind of crazy team-ups? What kinda tie-ins, Easter eggs? I’m just as much in the dark as everyone else, so I don’t know anything, but I’m excited to dive into that process.

Liu may get his wish. The last we saw him, Marvel’s signature martial artist was being introduced to the Avengers by the Sorcerer Supreme, Wong. Unfortunately, audiences will likely have to wait until the untitled second Shang-Chi eventually hits theaters to know if any of the leading man’s wishes come true.

  • Oscars’ Visual Effects Shortlist Includes ‘Shang-Chi’, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ And More

Oscars’ Visual Effects Shortlist Includes ‘Shang-Chi’, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ And More

It looks like the shortlists have found their way online and Marvel Studios is dominating the Visual Effects category for the upcoming Oscars. Keep in mind, these are not the actual nominations, which won’t follow until January 27th until February 1st. The final announcement for the Oscars will follow on Tuesday, February 8th. As of now, Black Widow, Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as well as Spider-Man: No Way Home are all up for the category.

No Way Home may have a good shot this year given its massive success and cultural relevance, especially during the pandemic. The competition is fierce with 20th Century Studios’ Free Guy, Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, MGM’s No Time to Die, Warner Bros.’ Dune, The Matrix Resurrection, and Godzilla vs. Kong. It’s once again very noticeable that this category is mainly dominated by blockbuster releases.

The latest Spider-Man entry has also entered the shortlist for the Sound nomination alongside big hitters like West Side Story, and Tick, Tick … Boom!, who might have the best chances given their respective musical foundation. Jon M. Chu‘s In the Heights is surprisingly absent though. DC also has gained some attention with The Suicide Squad nabbing a spot in the Makeup and Hairstyling part, which ironically its predecessor won back in 2017. So, we’ll see if it has the same chances.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘Jungle Cruise’ Boost Disney+ in November

‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘Jungle Cruise’ Boost Disney+ in November

Disney+ has been seeing quite a bit of growth that made it a strong competitor. While Netflix still dominates the market, especially in the United States, the offerings based on existing IPs have been a strong marketable focus for the Disney-owned service. Marvel Studios and Star Wars offerings are at the forefront, but there is a stronger shift since their big cinema releases are making their way to the platform.

Exactly that happened in November, which saw a strong showing by Disney+ with the Disney+ Day releases of Shang-Chi and Jungle Cruise playing a big role. On top of it all, Hawkeye was released in the same month offering a lot to viewers. We did hear it had the lowest viewed premiere from all Marvel Studios series on the platform, but it still was quite close to WandaVision back in January. It’ll be interesting to see how the finale might perform after the confirmation of Vincent D’Onofrio‘s return as Kingpin.

Overall, Disney+ has grown to a competitive size within a short period of time. It’s uncertain what the future has in store for it, as they try to find new ways to grow, but expansion is still at the forefront of most of these offerings. Netflix also has the advantage of beings years in the market but has been pushing much more to expand its IP collection. We’ll see what the future has in store for this competitive market.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’ Had Creative Liberties in Bringing Ta Lo to Life

‘Shang-Chi’ Had Creative Liberties in Bringing Ta Lo to Life

Shang-Chi and the Legends of Ten Rings introduced the world to a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the mystical pocket dimension of Ta Lo. Once we get past the dangerous forest, we enter a realm filled to the brim with mystical creatures. It’s the home of the loveable Morris that became a mainstay of our core group of unlikely heroes. In the Blu-ray release of the Marvel Studios film.

In one of the newest features, we get a glimpse into how they brought Morris to life through a proxy that Ben Kingsley grew quite fond of throughout the filming process. Yet, the biggest highlight was once we enter Ta Lo and meet these various creatures that live in this realm. Naturally, they are quite a bit different from those we live side-by-side within our daily life.

Simu Liu highlights that they had quite a bit of creative liberty in bringing these mythological beings to life. So, there were no restrictions set on what they can include here, especially with the appearance of Dweller in Darkness, who has had quite a variety of different designs and takes throughout the years. If we get to revisit this location and other locations teased in the film, we might see many more mythological creatures make their appearance in the MCU.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings is now available on Digital and Blu-ray.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’s Ta Lo Village was Built From Scratch

‘Shang-Chi’s Ta Lo Village was Built From Scratch

We are only a few days away from the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings on Blu-ray. In addition to the Disney+ making-of special Assembled on the film, we also get some additional hints at how they brought the various locations to life. In a special focus on the sets of the film, we get a closer look at one of the newest additions to the MCU. As our protagonist learns about his mother’s past, he uncovers the mystical village of Ta-Lo hidden away in a pocket dimension. In one of the special features, we learn that the entire set was built on location.

Production designer Sue Chan shared a look at the set that unveils how they brought the entire town to life in the Prospect Reservoir in Sydney. Awkwafina jokingly says “they’re putting in full plumbing,” but they highlight that most of the town is built based on actual Chinese architecture, such as including a stone foundation. The temple where Shang-chi takes on his father was even built with all the details bringing the fictional village to life.

The reasoning for this investment is not only to add a feeling of realism to the film but also to support actors in bringing their performances to life. Ben Kingsley highlights the details of them even making sure the floor matches the overall design to immerse their actors in this world. It adds an additional layer to their performance as they interact with the sets and it showcases a love for detail by the team wanting to integrate Chinese culture into the film. With a sequel on the horizon, it makes you wonder what else they might tackle.

  • Marvel Studios’ Andy Park Reveals Early Shang-Chi Costume Designs

Marvel Studios’ Andy Park Reveals Early Shang-Chi Costume Designs

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was one of 2021’s highlights, as the film combined the elements that made Marvel Studios the powerhouse that it is today. While telling a personal story about family, we also get a closer look at a new part of the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ta Lo offered a peek into a new dimension where our protagonist embraced his heritage and future. Even better, he got a new look that was passed on to him and his sister by their mother. The design has become quite iconic but it may have looked quite a bit different at one point.

Marvel Studios director of visual development shared a first look at alternative designs for Simu Liu’s costume. The first includes a nice visual of the Great Protector in the background. This design is closer to what we got in the film, but had some urban elements included, such as a hoodie. The dragon skin element is still included which would become a mainstay in his final design.

The other design is quite a departure, which almost seems like it was plucked out of a Tron film. The design was inspired by a potential spy direction for the series given the characters’ history with MI-6. Park highlights that he had no idea what the story was going to be about, which is why he just tested out concepts. It also integrates the classic Bruce Lee jumpsuit into the overall design.

It highlights how many different angles there are with these characters. The team even enters production on the designs and brings these elements to life long before any story elements or scripts are finalized. We’ve learned that they support writers by bringing these concepts visually to life as they are developing scripts, which means there might be many others out there we haven’t seen yet.

  • Marvel Studios Officially Reveals ‘Shang-Chi’s Place in the Sacred Timeline

Marvel Studios Officially Reveals ‘Shang-Chi’s Place in the Sacred Timeline

Either you watch them by release date or you watch them chronologically. For Marvel Cinematic Universe fans, there can be only one (way to watch)! For the chronologically minded, Marvel Studios has now given you one less thing to stress about and revealed just where Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings fits into established chronology. And it’s right where you probably expected it to be, more or less.

According to the “Marvel Cinematic Universe in Timeline Order” section of Disney Plus, the events of Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings take place after the events of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

Background details already indicated that Shang-Chi’s adventures took place post-Blip despite some early and ill-advised rumors that it would take place DURING the gap between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Of course, there is one question left open: with the MCU’s Spider-Man films not available on Disney Plus, fans still don’t know exactly where to place Spider-Man: Far From Home during their rewatch.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’ Third Film to Cross $400M Globally

‘Shang-Chi’ Third Film to Cross $400M Globally

We’ve been keeping a close eye on box office numbers throughout the year, as the world slowly heals from the pandemic. The first positive developments were back in April when Godzilla vs. Kong managed to beat expectations. As everyone focused on hybrid releases, F9: The Fast Saga took the risk and proved its success. So, while Disney was hesitant with Black Widow, they were all-in with Shang-Chi. The more time passes, the more it looks like the risk paid off.

The latest Marvel Studios release managed to garner another $9.1M throughout the weekend. While Venom: Let There Be Carnage faced a harsh drop in its second weekend, the MCU film managed to hold somewhat steady. With these numbers, it’s the third film to cross the $400M global box office mark. Officially, it has joined F9 and Godzilla vs. Kong. It’s great to see the film continue to perform well and it still has some time before it releases on Disney+.

The film currently earned $189.1M internationally and stands at $401.6M globally. We also have to keep in mind that it joined two other films that had the advantage of releasing in China. While there were hints it might find its way there, it seems more and more unlikely as time goes by. We still have no Chinese release date for the next two entries, Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home. So, it’s no small accomplishment for Shang-Chi to garner the amount it has at the international box office.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’ Director Open to Romance Between Katy and Xialing

‘Shang-Chi’ Director Open to Romance Between Katy and Xialing

It’s hard to believe that it has been exactly one month since Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings first hit movie theaters. While some thought it would flop, the film received critical acclaim and is currently the highest-earning movie of 2021 in terms of box office performance.

Over the past month, fans have been able to experience and discuss their favorite aspects of Shang-Chi, including characters that created from scratch solely for the film. The movie highlighted the now-popular friendship between Simu Liu‘s Shang-Chi and Awkwafina‘s Katy, and many fans specifically enjoyed that the two never became romantic. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has revealed that platonic friendship between the two was always the plan:

Early on… when I did my initial pitch, it was like Sam and Frodo was the relationship that I had, like, in my pitch… that Shang-Chi needed… the Asian-American sidekick…When we started talking together with Dave about that relationship, we started talking about how many girl friends we have, like legitimate friends… and I think that’s something that we both — it’s very normal to us to have friends who are… and they’re not surface friends, they’re real intimate friendship relationships that are not romantic. And that was exciting for us to do.

    Destin Daniel Cretton

Still, romance could still very much be in the future of the Shang-Chi franchise. Another standout character from the film was Shang-Chi’s sister, Meng’er Zhang’s Xialing. When asked about the fact that some fans have been vocal about wanting a romantic pairing between Katy and Xialing, Cretton stated:

I would not be opposed to that.

    Destin Daniel Cretton

Whether or not Katy and Xialing pair up, Cretton being open to the idea is a huge. As it stands, LGBTQ+ representation is virtually absent in the MCU. It might also signal Marvel Studios’ growing willingness or intention to include more queer characters or storylines. Eternals will make MCU history next month by featuring Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos and Haaz Steiman’s character as a gay couple raising a family together and kissing onscreen, a long-awaited first for the MCU.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters now.

  • Early Drafts of ‘Shang-Chi’ Were “Too Crazy” for Marvel Execs

Early Drafts of ‘Shang-Chi’ Were “Too Crazy” for Marvel Execs

In an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton and writer David Callaham gave some insight into the development process of the film. According to Callaham, some of the early ideas pitched were “too crazy” to make it into the final cut.

We were doing some pretty weird stuff at the beginning before (executive producer) Jonathan (Schwartz) kind of pulled us back. He knows the world. I think Destin and I, when we got there, were like ‘We can do anything! It’s Marvel!’ No idea was off the table to begin with, to be honest, which was really cool of Marvel, to let the team explore a little bit, and then eventually they tell you ‘You can’t do that, that’s too crazy’ or ‘We’re doing that somewhere else, but we can’t talk about it,’ that kind of thing.

One such potentially crazy idea, according to Cretton, would have seen Shang-Chi leave a younger brother behind, rather than Xialing, who would eventually turn into some sort of monster.

I mean, at one point, there was a moment when Shang-Chi had a brother that was left behind with Dad rather than a sister. That was early on. And there’s inspirations from the comics for that character. And I think the brother, like, turned into a monster at one point.

As Cretton says, Shang-Chi did have both a half-brother and an adopted brother in the comics, both of whom ultimately did battle with the Master of Kung-Fu. With neither Moving Shadow nor M’Nai, the aforementioned brothers, showing up in the first film, it’s possible that they could have put a pin in the idea and bring the character back in the sequel, seeking to challenge Shang-Chi and or Xialing for control of the Ten Rings (both the objects and the organization.

It’s always interesting to listen to the creatives behind the projects talk about the developments behind the scenes. Often times, ideas left out of the original films grow over time and find their way into sequels or additional projects; additionally, as Callaham pointed out, they creators sometimes find out that their ideas are already in the pipeline for other projects. Either way, it’s a good idea to file this one away in your memory banks for later as it has the potential to pop up down the line.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is now in theaters and will begin streaming on Disney Plus November 12th.
