  • West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose Joins ‘Kraven the Hunter’

West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose Joins ‘Kraven the Hunter’

Ariana DeBose stunned critics and audiences with her role as Anita in Stephen Spielberg’s West Side Story, winning the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress and earning an Oscar nomination for the same role. Now, DeBose will step into the world of comic book adaptations as she boards Sony’s Kraven the Hunter.

According to a trade report, DeBose will play voodoo priestess Calypso, a role for which Jodi Turner-Smith had previously been rumored. Calypso and Kraven shared a highly antagonistic relationship in the comics that often saw the hunter driven into fits of rage by the manipulations of Calypso, who also created potions for Kraven to augment his strength.

DeBose joins Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who landed the lead as Kraven late last year, Fred Hechinger, who recently joined the film as Kraven’s brother, the Chameleon, and Russell Crowe, who will play the father of the two men. Kraven the Hunter, directed by J.C. Chandor, is due in theaters next January.

    Murphy’s Murmurs: ‘Kraven the Hunter’

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter is currently set to release on January 13, 2023 and it’s been some time since fans have had any updates on the film. Outside of the film’s star, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and director, J.C. Chandor, details on the film have been hard to come by. That all should be changing rather soon, however, as it looks like things are set to get started on the project.

Production start dates have always been tentative and now, more than ever, it’s important to keep that in mind, but assuming no delays, it sounds like Kraven the Hunter will begin production in the UK next month. Given the film’s January 2023 release date, it’s a very sensible timeline for principal photography, leaving plenty of time for any additional photography, which is always factored into these projects.

Taylor-Johnson has taken his prep for the role VERY seriously. As fans of the comics know, Kraven is a physically imposing specimen, carrying well over 200 pounds on his frame and having enough strength to tangle with dangerous foes even before he was enhanced through the potions of the voodoo goddess Calypso, who is rumored to be played by Jodie Turner-Smith in the film. Should they follow the comics and juice up the character, he’d be superhumanly strong and word is that Taylor-Johnson has done the work to look the part, having gone to great lengths to transform his body for the role.

Fans caught a quick tease of the character in last act of Spider-Man: No Way Home and with the multiverse now in play, it probably won’t be long before one of the Spideys finds himself tangling with Kraven, giving Sony the chance to adapt The Last Hunt, something that has been discussed and teased as long as there’s been rumors of a Kraven film. We’ll see what role Spidey has to play in the expanding Sony universe and which actor will fill that role.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Creatives Looked to Return Peter Parker His Comic Book Roots

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Creatives Looked to Return Peter Parker His Comic Book Roots

While Tom Holland’s time as Spider-Man has been full of critical and box office success, it has not been without criticisms. Among the most common is that Peter’s relationship with Tony Stark gave the young hero too much, too soon, and took him far away from his comic book origins. Fans grew tired of Parker’s dependance on Stark’s technology, calling him “Iron Boy”, and hoped, with Stark now out of the picture, that Parker would have to learn to fend for himself. Stark tech was present once again in Spider-Man: No Way, both by way of the Ion Spider suit and the fabricator that helped Parker synthesize cures for the multiversal villains. By the end of the film, however, audiences saw a Parker who more closely resembled the young hero from the comics, having learned the true cost of being Spider-Man. And according to the film’s writing duo, Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna, putting Parker in that place was part of their mission.

Fans of the long-running comic book series are used to Peter having to deal with what he’s come to call “Parker Luck.” It’s never been strictly defined by Marvel (I don’t think), but Parker Luck seems like a very specific branch of Murphy’s Law: if anything can go wrong for Peter, it will. More acutely, it seems to explore the inverse relationship between the time Peter spends doing good deeds as Spider-Man and the amount of GOOD things that happen to him. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter’s acceptance of his moral mission as Spider-Man, morals defined by his Aunt May, came at the cost of those he loved most, as McKenna explained:

He was trying to do what May taught him and that made the sacrifice that much more difficult, because it blew up in his face and it got her killed. Then he started questioning that morality in a way that he never really questioned because he hasn’t been put to the test in that way.

How did Parker come to terms with those questions? As we see by the end of the film, he seems to have come to terms with the fact that in order to be the hero he wants to be, there could be no getting around the spell cast by Strange to make people forget him. Though he promised to find MJ and Ned and “make them remember” him, McKenna says he comes to the realization that making that choice would only put them in danger:

You want to have that doughnut scene be him making the last piece of the sacrifice. “I could tell them everything. I can try to get my friends back. But I’d be going right back to the place of endangering my loved ones by bringing them into my life. And I can’t have that.”

Peter makes the mature choice after MJ mentions that her cut doesn’t really hurt anymore. While her words describe the physical pain of the cut, Peter realizes that the MJ’s emotional pain of losing him has also dissipated and chooses to leave her and Ned happy and safe, making, as McKenna said, the final step in his sacrifice and choosing not to try to continue live in two worlds, as Doctor Strange warned him. As many astute fans have noticed, it’s only at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home that we are finally getting the version of the character that made him so beloved over the years. Moving forward, Holland’s Parker is on his own without the benefit of Stark’s tech or the support of those around him, meaning the next trilogy of MCU films will look a whole lot different and, potentially, a whole lot more like the comics.

  • ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Writers Address Why Doctor Strange’s Spell Drew Venom to the MCU

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Writers Address Why Doctor Strange’s Spell Drew Venom to the MCU

Magic. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, magic was both the problem and the solution and, because how magic works remains a mystery to us, fans were left with a lot of questions as they walked away from the theaters. Why did Doctor Strange’s original spell-gone-wrong draw Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock into the MCU? Does Strange’s final spell mean the Guardians or Captain Marvel, who weren’t on Earth when it was cast, will forget Peter, too? In an interview with Variety, writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna explained their approach to magic in the year’s biggest box office hit.

The film’s central plot revolved around Peter meeting five villains from previous Spider-Man films and trying to cure them. The mid-credit scene, however, introduced a sixth: Hardy’s Eddie Brock and his alien symbiote companion, Venom. While the other five found themselves involved in a conflict with the Spider-Men, Brock chose to while away his time in Mexico, having drinks and catching up on the history of the MCU. But why was this version of Brock, who has yet to meet a Peter Parker in his own universe, brought to the MCU by the spell? According to the writers, the answer lies in a line spoken in the post-credit scene to Sony’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which the duo revealed was actually directed by No Way Home’s Jon Watts.

In that scene, Brock and Venom are catching up on their telenovelas while hiding out in Mexico when Venom begins to explain to him that he possesses “80 billion light years of hive knowledge across universes” that would “explode” Eddie’s “tiny little brain.” And just as Venom prepares to give Eddie a “taste” of that knowledge, the pair are caught up in Strange’s spell and brought to the MCU. According to McKenna, somewhere in that hive knowledge exits the Parker/Spidey connection, as he explained, “The idea is that the symbiote has knowledge of other universes. Buried in his brain is some knowledge of that connection.” Problem solved.

The writers were a little less specific in their explanations as to exactly how Strange’s final spell, which made everyone on Earth forget about Peter Parker, would play out down the line, especially with him still actively working as Spider-Man. “Obviously, some sort of magical redaction has occurred,” McKenna explained. “At the end of all this, we didn’t want a lot of people trying to do magical math in their head.” And so, according to Sommers, they left the problems to be solved by their future selves:

We decided, let’s try to do it in the most satisfying way and just focus on the emotion of it. And then if people have questions about some of those details that didn’t get answered here, we’ll answer them hopefully in another movie somewhere down the line.

Give that the duo have worked on each of the MCU’s Spidey films so far and that there’s a fourth in development, they’ll probably have to start figuring out how to answer them sooner rather than later.

  • ‘El Muerto’

    ‘El Muerto’

    Premiere: TBD

In late April 2022, a trade report announced that Sony was going ahead with a new feature film focusing on El Muerto, a Marvel character that has appeared in less than half a dozen comic issues.

Bad Bunny, who is set to star in Sony’s Bullet Train, will be playing the titular character Juan-Carlos Sanchez. Little more is known about the project since it seems to be in very, very early development.

  • ‘Madame Web’

    ‘Madame Web’

    Premiere: February 16, 2024

Sony executive Palak Patel was hired to oversee the development of the Madame Web project and hired director S.J. Clarkson as well as the team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to write the film. Although there’s documentation on the project dating back to April 2019 it was only in early 2022 that it became clear that this wasn’t to be another feature trapped in pre-production hell.

In February 2022 it was reported that Dakota Johnson was in talks to play the titular role, something that was seemingly confirmed just a couple of days after the initial rumors started spreading. A few weeks later it was Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney who was added to the cast in an, as of then, undisclosed role. Both stars hinted at a possible Marvel Studios involvement in the project at different times (here and here), something that hasn’t been confirmed.

The movie was given an official release date in April 2022, with Sony planning on it hitting theaters in July 2023.

Late May and early June 2022 gave fans a few more casting announcements as Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Isabela Merced (Sicario: Day of the Soldado), and Tahar Rahim (The Serpent) all joined the project. Emma Roberts (American Horror Story), Mike Epps (The Upshaws), Adam Scott (Severance), and Zosia Mamet (Girls) soon followed.

With production on the feature film already underway in July 2022, something confirmed by Sweeney, set photos hinted at an early 2000s plot timeframe.

In what is already seen as business as usual ever since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic began, Sony pushed the Madame Web release back a few months, from the initial July 17 to October 6, 2023. The movie’s premiere was once again shifted on September 2022, with the new date being set as February 16, 2024.

In late October 2021 Sony slated two new, untitled Marvel films, for 2023. There are several possibilities for the projects eyeing these specific release dates. From projects already known to be in active development and with talent attached (Spider-Woman), sequels to already established IPs banking in on previous box office success (Venom 3) or even something from the list of other Spidey-related Marvel projects Sony has been trying to get off the ground.

  • Other Projects in Development

Sony has, over the past several years, had plans to develop a number of live-action films set in their SUMC. Here is an attempt at a comprehensive list of what’s still alive and kicking:

    THE SINISTER SIX

    MADAME WEBB

While not clear, it is believed that director S.J. Clarkson may have been hired to helm Sony’s greatly anticipated Madame Web film. It is also rumored that Sony may have a couple of big-name actresses lined up for the role in Charlize Theron and Amy Adams.

    JACKPOT

Sony has turned to comic book scribe and Arrow screenwriter, Mark Guggenheim, to pen the script for their solo Jackpot film.

    BLACK CAT

    SILVER SABLE

  • ‘Spider-Woman’

    ‘Spider-Woman’

    Premiere: TBD

In early February 2020, Sony scheduled a release date for an untitled live-action Marvel film on October 8, 2021. That date has since been moved due to the COVID-19 pandemic and as of this time, no information about the film is available, but it has been widely speculated that is might be Sony’s Spider-Woman film. Sony is searching for an actress, 25-35 for the lead role of Jessica Drew. In August of 2020, Olivia Wilde signed on to helm the film and will be working with screenwriter Katie Silberman to develop the project.

    Premiere: TBD

In early September of 2020, it was announced that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were working with writer Lauren Moon to develop a live-action streaming series based on Cindy Moon, aka Silk. The series appears to be the first of a suite of original programming being developed by the duo under their agreement with Sony. Amazon was believed to be the leader in the clubhouse to land the series though the complicated rights situation with Disney might mean it airs on a traditional TV channel first.
