Production on James Gunn‘s Superman has picked up stateside in Atlanta and it didn’t take long for the first photos from the set to make their way online.
Just Jared has just released photos of Maria Gabrielle de Faria’s villain known as The Engineer. Whether it’s just an early iteration of the character’s costume or if Gunn decides to go a totally different direction for the DCU, the photos show a very different look for the character than in the comics.
Production in DC Studios’ Superman is underway and while the vast majority of the cast has been revealed in the past several months, the role of one of the property’s most well-known supporting characters had yet to be filled…until now.
According to THR’s Aaron Couch and Borys Kit, Wendell Pierce (The Wire, Amazon’s Jack Ryan) has joined the project as Daily Planet E-I-C Perry White.
If you’ve seen Pierce’s work as James Greer alongside John Krasinski in Jack Ryan, you might just have seen the template for the way he’ll play White in director James Gunn‘s Superman.
Pierce joins Jackie Cooper, Lane Smith, Frank Langella and Laurence Fishburne as those who have brought the gruff don’t call him chief of the Daily Planet.
While it was never really in doubt, the streaming debut of The Marvels on Disney Plus has cemented where the film fits chronologically in the MCU.. Additionally, it may clear up any lingering confusion about when two D+ streaming series, Ms. Marvel and Secret Invasion, fit on the Sacred Timeline.
As expected, the events of director Nia DaCosta‘s sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel have been confirmed to take place AFTER the 2023 streaming series Secret Invasion. While that may seem like a no-brainer (especially given comments made by Samuel L. Jackson indicated that Secret Invasion had to happen for TheMarvels to happen), we are in the age of alternative facts.
The Marvels, however, isn’t just a sequel to Captain Marvel. it marks the big screen debuts of Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, who were last seen in the streaming WandaVision and Ms. Marvel, respectively, and is the follow up to Nick Fury’s adventures in the streaming series Secret Invasion. In that regard, it’s essentially a sequel to four different projects and with Marvel Studios attempting to create an in-universe continuity via an official timeline, TheMarvels really does need to line up with all of those projects as well. And it seems as though it does while also giving some additional context to those other projects.
While no continuity issues really ever arose around WandaVision’s place on the timeline, the events of The Marvels would seem to to take place in late 2026, if in-universe details are to be taken seriously. Those in-universe details place the events of Secret Invasion between late October and early November 2026, which would then place the events of The Marvels in November or later given they take place after. That means that Ms. Marvel’s post-credit scene in which she changes places with Carol Danvers–which was a scene in The Marvels–takes place roughly one year after the main events of the Disney Plus series.
While there are always questions around continuity and timelines, all available evidence would point toward The Marvels neatly fitting into late-2026 and being the project set furthest into “the future”, aka the MCU’s present day. Interestingly and unrelatedly enough, multiple set photos have opened up the possibility that portions of Daredevil: Born Again may be set in early 2027, meaning Marvel Studios is continuing to pull away from real world present day.
DC Studios co-chair James Gunn has consistently made it clear that the canonical animated series Creature Commandos will be the first DCU projects shared with fans; however, outside of “2024”, no information had been made public about when it might be available to stream on Max…until now.
In an interview with Screen Rant at the Saturn Awards, Sean Gunn gave fans who are anticipating the arrival of the new DCU a little more clarity on when to expect Creature Commandos.
It seems as though Gunn will be a busy man as thr DCU moves forward. In addition to voicing Weasel and G.I. Robot in Creature Commandos (and keep in mind James Gunn has explained that the studio hopes to have actors who voice animated roles also play their live-action counterparts), the actor is also set to play Maxwell Lord in an undisclosed project(s).
Production in Daredevil: Born Again is well underway on the streets of New York City which means fans have been treated to a plethora of behind the scenes photos. And while nobody is sure exactly what a plethora is, there’s been no shortage of great looks at Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Elden Henson, Deborah Ann Woll and more. Now, a production rolls on into February, a familiar Hell’s Kitchen location has been spotted.
While it appears to be a different establishment than the one that was used in Marvel Television’s Daredevil, a new photo has revealed the Josie’s Bar will be serving libations to Matt Murdock and crew in Daredevil: Born Again.
Josie’s Bar served as Matt, Karen and Foggy’s booze retreat in Daredevil and The Defenders. With all the recent rumors and speculation surrounding the new series, one wonders if Matt will be drinking alone at Josie’s when Daredevil: Born Again streams on D+ in 2025.
Following what was described in the trades as a creative overhaul on the project, Daredevil: Born Again recently restarted production in New York City. With the additions of Wilson Bethel, Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll to the cast, many had begun to question just how much of the original story–and cast–for the new series made the cut after Dario Scardapane took over as showrunner. As the days have gone by, it’s starting to seem as though the initial wave of changes aren’t overwhelming and now another actress whose role in the series had been in question has been seen on set.
Following a daytime shoot where Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio shared a table at the Square Diner, Cox was captured during an evening shoot with actress Margarita Levieva.
Levieva joined the cast of Daredevil: Born Again in December 2022, ahead of the initial round of production that took place before the WGA and SAG strikes shut it down. The actress, who is set to play Heather Glenn–one of Matt’s many flings from the comics–had been seen on set before but with Woll’s return, many expected her character’s role to be cut or reduced to make way for Karen Page and Matt to rekindle an old flame. While the set photos do show some kindling, Woll was nowhere to be found during yesterday’s filming.
Reports indicate that 3 new episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are set to be filmed in New York City in the immediate future. Those 3, along with the footage that was shot before the strikes, are said to compose the first part of the series which is expected to hit Disney Plus in 2025.
As the world waits on the answer to the most important question inhistory–who will make up Marvel Studios’ First Family?–an interesting tidbit of news about the script for Fantastic Four has emerged.
Neustadter and Weber have worked together on several projects included Daisy Jones & the Six, Hulu’s Rosaline and The Disaster Artist. According to the report, they have not been brought in to rewrite the script from page one but simply to take a pass at it. Given their filmography, it seems likely they’re adding some comedic touches to Friedman’s sci-fi script.
After news broke that Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll were set to reprise their respective role, the creative overhaul of Marvel Studios Daredevil: Born Again has added another familiar face to the mix.
According to Comic Book’s Adam Barnhardt, Wilson Bethel has now joined the cast of the Disney + streaming series.
Following the release of the 5-episode streaming series Echo, Disney added the Netflix Defenders-verse series to the official MCU timeline. According to Vincent D’Onofrio, the decision to canonize those series came about during the creative overhaul on Daredevil: Born Again in the Fall of 2023.
Barnhardt’s report did not include any details on what to expecfrom Bethel’s Benjamin Pointdexter. When last seen in the Season 3 finale of Daredevil, the character was undergoing an experimental spinal surgery to in an effort to repair the significant damage done to him at the hands of Fisk’s Kingpin.
January 15th-March 12th: Daredevil: Born Again, Part 1
New directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have completed taking stock of the footage that was shot last year and seem to have come away with a little less work to do than fans thought. The latest word is that the directing duo and showrunner Dario Scardapane were able to condense what was filmed into 6 episodes and that they’ll be getting to work on filming a new pilot episode and two additional episodes to complete Part One. However…
According to star Vincent D’Onofrio, this highly anticipated streaming series may no longer be 18 episodes…but will it be more or will it be less?
It seems like there are a few shows that could work with more episodes, then some that just need eight or 10 or six. Echo is like five. I think this show [Born Again] could definitely work with more episodes and I know that Charlie [Cox] is, and I am too, happy to do that.
-Vincent D’Onofrio on the Daredevil: Born Again episode count
Whatever the final total ends up being, it seems Part 1 is still on track for an early 2025 release.
May 2nd: Captain America: Brave New World
The great release date shuffle may never end but a new round may start with Captain America: Brave New World. At one point in time, the studio set aside 5 months for additional photography to take place and brought in Matthew Ortman to script those scenes. While the hope is to start in mid-2024, we’ve heard cameras will not roll again until the powers that be are content with what’s been written rather than trying to course correct on the fly. Whether or not they actually film for 5 months, this project cannot afford to be a miss so expect them to take their time which may just mean it gets bumped off its February date and lands in May.
As was the prevailing belief, star Dominique Thorne confirmed that Ironheart has completed filming. That means it’s just sitting in the can waiting to be released at Marvel Studios’ pleasure. Given all the concern over many of the projects the last few years, that’s a welcome change. It sounds like a very safe bet that this will roll out in Fall 2025.
November 7: Fantastic Four
In an effort to accommodate the schedule of yet-to-be-announced-as-Reed-Richards star Pedro Pascal, it seems as though the start of production on Fantastic Four has been bumped into the second half of 2024. If that’s accurate, there’s absolutely no way this makes its May 2025 release date and there’s no need to rush it out in July when Thunderbolts SHOULD be completely ready to go. And so, the first family’s MCU debut will have to wait…perhaps until November. There should be no concern about WHEN MCU movies debut anymore (Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever all did very well at the box office in November) but rather that they release when they are ready to release. That might just mean Mahershal Ali’s Blade gets bumped to 2026 but that might just do the studio a favor as its one and only announced 2026 project might need some more time to cook anyway.
After filming for several months, Marvel Studios Disney Plus streaming series Daredevil: Born Again paused production due to the SAG strike. Before it did, plenty of reports and rumors about the series made their way online including one that indicated two major supporting characters from the Netflix Dedenders-verse series were not part of the plans for the D+ show. Now, a new report suggests that’s changed.
According the Jeff “The In” Sneider, Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll have joined the cast of Daredevil: Born Again as part of the sweeping creative overhaul ordered for the series.
Henson and Woll, who played Foggy Nelson and Karen Page, respectively, were introduced in 2015’s Daredevil and had significant roles in that 3 seasons of that series while also appearing in other Netflix series, as well. Online fan response to them reportedly NOT returning for Daredevil: Born Again was largely negative. Sneider’s report did not indicate how large of a role the returning actors will have in the series
After having time to review footage during the strike-induced shutdown, Kevin Feige and crew decided to change up the creative team on Daredevil: Born Again. Dario Scardapane was brought on as showrunner while Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead–who are quickly becoming Marvel Studios go-to-duo–were brought in to direct. According to Sneider, the new creative team will use the previously shot footage to put together 6 episodes. As production restarts, the plan is to film 3 new episodes–one of which will be a new “Episode 1”–giving them nine episode to roll out as the first half of the series.
