  • ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Reveals Release Window for Both Hawkeye DLCs

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Reveals Release Window for Both Hawkeye DLCs

Just a few days ago, we got the official announcement that Kate Bishop would be the first addition to Marvel’s Avengers. The game is only a few days away from its official release, so it is exciting to know what to expect once we’ve finished the main campaign titled Reassemble. Some might have noticed that they also were very open about the release being shortly after launch. They did not offer a specific release window but did tease that they would reveal their road map in a future War Table update. Surprisingly, taking a closer look at their press release, they included when we can expect not just Bishop’s DLC but also that of Barton. The press release states that Kate’s Operation titled “Taking AIM” will kickstart late October followed by Clint’s to finish the double-feature in November.

Here an excerpt from the official press release:

The Marvel’s Avengers WAR TABLE also revealed a new post-launch Hero coming as part of the game’s Avengers Initiative, Kate Bishop. Kate’s Operation, “Taking AIM,” kicks off in late October featuring a new villain and new mystery. Bishop, who is mentored by Clint Barton, comes with distinct Heroic Skills and takedowns that only an Olympic-caliber gymnast and master archer like Kate can pull off.

Kate Bishop will be the first new Hero introduced to Marvel’s Avengers after its launch on September 4. Taking AIM’s story begins shortly after the conclusion of the game’s Reassemble campaign and is just the first half of the two Hawkeyes’ Story Arc. Clint Barton’s Hawkeye takes the stage in November to complete the double-feature and lay the groundwork for what’s next.

Interestingly, they’ve decided to include it in the press release but not their video. The fact that they describe these stories as a singular story arc may also hint at the nature of these characters. Taking a closer look during the video, you can see that both characters share the same symbol. As such, we could see some double-features more often in the future, or smaller story arcs from the leaked line-up. Still, we shouldn’t expect monthly character updates like this every time. Some characters will require more work than others and might also include bigger updates. These could be either new areas, new mission types, or completely new enemy factions. Interesting to note is that the press release also ends on additional post-launch content being revealed soon, so we might see a follow-up War Table early next month to confirm the release date.

  • Box Office Battle: Mulan vs Tenet

Box Office Battle: Mulan vs Tenet

Just 2 days from now, on September 4th, we will be witness to what is perhaps one of the most important weekends for the film industry, movie critics, directors, producers, and general audiences overall. This Labor Day weekend, two major motion pictures will be released simultaneously in the United States across two vastly different platforms. Now usually, this would be your typical competition between two major studios, except, it’s actually not. The stakes in this “Box Office Battle”, as I like to call it, are actually much greater than any previous box office encounter for two major studios. Very few people realize the importance of this coming weekend and it’s that the outcome of this contest could very well determine how the film industry moves forward in light of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and the result could even affect the future of cinema as we knew it then. So let’s get right into it.

    THE CONTENDERS:

Judging by the title, I’m certain that you know the two films going head to head this weekend. But let’s break them down so you know how we got here.

    CONTENDER #1: Disney’s MULAN

    Mulan

Disney’s Live-Action Adaptation of the famous Chinese folk tale was meant to portray a more “accurate” telling of the story of Hua Mulan. Directed by the incredible filmmaker “Niki Caro”, Disney’s “Mulan” tells a story in which “a fearless young woman risks everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known. When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.”

The film stars Yifei Liu as Mulan, along with Tzi Ma, Yoson An, Gong Li, Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Ron Yuan, & Jet Li for an incredible assortment of actors and actresses of high caliber.

The film was originally meant to release in theaters on March 9th of this year, but the global pandemic has since delayed the release of the film to a new release date, 6 months later.

    CONTENDER #2: TENET

PITT_Hero_MLP_1440_v2 copyThe highly anticipated sci-fi/spy thriller from the acclaimed director; Christopher Nolan, “Tenet” tells a story unlike any explored before, one that can only be explored from such a director. “Armed with only one word—Tenet—and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real-time. Not time travel. Inversion.”

The film stars John David Washington as the new Protagonist, along with the likes of Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Martin Donovan, Fiona Dourif, Yuri Kolokolnikov, Himesh Patel, Clémence Poésy, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, with Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh for an incredibly powerful and diverse cast.

Originally scheduled for a July 17, 2020 release in IMAX theaters, the film was pushed back several times before finally deciding on a September 4 release date.

What makes this Box Office Contest so important?

Unlike previous premieres, the way these two films will compete in the Box Office is vastly different.

MULWhile Tenet will be debuting in theaters the traditional way, Mulan will be taking a different approach and will be releasing the film via their Disney+ streaming service under a new brand titled “Premier Access”, something we have discussed thoroughly on this platform. Now, the way “Premier Access” works is:

“Starting September 4, with Premier Access, you can watch Mulan before it’s available to all Disney+ subscribers. Disney+ will offer Premier Access to Mulan for $29.99 on disneyplus.com and select platforms, including Apple, Google, and Roku. Once you have Premier Access to Mulan, you can watch as many times as you want on any platform where Disney+ is available. Your access to Mulan will continue as long as you are an active Disney+ subscriber.”

Now, these are two relatively different business models. One offers people the ability to watch a motion picture from the safety & comfort of their homes for a fee, while the other offers audiences the more traditional way of seeing films, albeit the immediate health risk wherever theaters are still open. With any business model, there are it’s pros and it’s cons.

    DISNEY+ PROS/CONS:

    Disney+_Logo_Final

The Pro: As previously mentioned, is that you can watch Mulan from the safety and comfort of your own home without having to expose yourself to the health hazards of the outside world. And with over 60 million subscribers and more on the way with the eventual launch of Disney+ in Latin America in November, if this business model is successful with Mulan and theater restrictions continue in the US & around the world, we could see more blockbuster films eventually released under this brand, mainly Disney’s Soul & Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated Black Widow.

The Con: However, by making it available only to Disney+, it limits itself in only making it available in countries where Disney+ is available, which is currently United States, Canda, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Europe. Also, some subscribers of the platform have expressed their dislike for Disney’s new business model as they find the need to pay a $30 fee to see the film early is something unnecessary in their view. Disney has described the move in a Q3 earnings report, as a “one-off”, (though our own personal investigations have said otherwise).

    TRADITIONAL THEATER PROS/CONS:

    merlin_2810069.0

The Pro: Now I personally love the theater. The smell of popcorn, the ambiance, it’s supposed to allow us to escape our reality for a few hours and immerse ourselves in a world of fiction. Going to Drive-In theaters can be a wonderful experience to escape the 4 walls we’ve been forced to live in for the past few months.

The Con: However, I must also state the massive con Tenet has going against it, which is that right now, we are in a pandemic that has forced many to quarantine themselves and has forced the shutdown of many indoor theaters. While a large number of people may not plan on going so as to not risk any contagion, those who plan on going to see the film also face another potential disadvantage which is that they have to find a drive-in theater that will showcase Tenet and even if your drive-in theater is open, Warner Bros. plans to release Tenet only in “Select Drive-In Theaters”, “mandating that “Tenet” can only play in outdoor venues if indoor theaters in that particular market are open”, which in itself, limits even further the revenue that Tenet can accumulate on opening weekend.

    SO WHO WINS? (MY PREDICTION)

    MULAN VS TENET

There are multiple key factors that play in here when determining which motion picture might snag the opening weekend win, or better put, who would “break even” first. Mainly:

    • Location Accessibility
    • Reviews
    • Revenue to “Break Even”

Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” will be available to the general public via traditional theater format only, meaning it limits itself to locations where both outdoor venues & indoor theaters are open. However, the film has some generally great reviews about how the film’s originality and use of mindbending VFX to convey a fantastic production, which boosts its popularity among audiences, but with that incredible amount of production, comes a price. In order to break even, Tenet would need to pull in around $450 million. (Which in my view, is an extremely high price to pay for such a risky move).

Disney’s Mulan” however, tells a different story. By releasing on a PVOD format, the film will be available to all 60.5 million subscribers around the world where Disney+ is available. While there aren’t many reviews available for the film, the popularity of Disney is so widespread that people are bound to know about this film already. Lastly, in order for Disney to break even, Mulan would need to generate $300 million in revenue. (Something that is entirely possible given the amount of subscribers Disney+ has and that the demographic for this film is users that have families and small kids.)

So, if I had to pick a scenario of how Labor Day Weekend might play out…

MULAN ULTIMATELY TAKES THE WIN FIRST.

    mulan__2020__japaneses_poster_textless_by_mintmovi3_ddruacu (2)

I see Mulan potentially breaking even first, and possibly generating even more than what they have invested in this film during their first week, given the amount of subscribers the platform has. In my own personal opinion, it is the safest way to go see a film given the circumstances.

Now, this does not mean that Tenet does not have a chance at breaking even. Tenet could break even, but at a much slower rate than Mulan given the circumstances of the release. For it’s international release weekend, the epic spy/sci-fi thriller managed to achieve a $53 million debut despite the ongoing pandemic. HOWEVER, while Tenet may be an absolute masterpiece from the brilliant mind of Christopher Nolan, I don’t see a scenario where many people might go to drive-in theaters (sometimes traveling large distances), limited in the way Warner Bros. has done for this film. Not only that, but people might not take the risk of exposing themselves to the virus.

But, no one knows for sure. Only time will tell what the audiences will do next week.

  • ‘THE MANDALORIAN’ Season 2 Release Date Announced

Disney struck gold with the release of The Mandalorian, created by Disneys golden boy, Jon Favreau; the show quickly caught on due to the appearance of a certain small green creature that captured the hearts of fans around the world. With production on the second season wrapping right before the pandemic hit, many wondered what the status of the highly anticipated second season was if it would still make its October release. Today Disney+ made the announcement that the second season of the galactic western would begin streaming new episodes weekly starting on October 30th. The shows sophomore season is sure to be an exciting one with Mando and friends diving deeper into what the galaxy once was, learning about the force and those who once wielded it to bring peace or chaos to the galaxy.

It’s unclear if the second season will follow the release pattern of the original or if we’ll only see one episode at launch. Either way, the much anticipated sophomore season is right around the corner!

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘DOCTOR STRANGE’ Sequel Set to Film in November

EXCLUSIVE: ‘DOCTOR STRANGE’ Sequel Set to Film in November

The production engine at Marvel Studios is starting back up and running and it’s about to shift into high gear. Murphy’s Multiverse has learned at production on Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness will begin in the UK in November. Originally scheduled to film in the Spring, production never got off the ground due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was previously assumed that cameras wouldn’t roll on the sequel until 2021 but we have confirmed that production is now just 2 months away.

The potential implications of this are as exciting as the news itself. The sequel was twice a part of the COVID slate shuffle, moving first from its original May 7, 2021 release to November 5, 2021 before eventually landing on March 25, 2022 when the untitled Spider-Man sequel was moved into November. With Spidey 3 being pushed into December and production on Doctor Strange 2 about to get going, it is now POSSIBLE that we could see Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme slide back into that November 2021 window!

Scott Derrickson was originally back to helm the sequel before stepping down. At that point, Marvel Studios turned to Raimi as their point man to introduce the true multiverse to the MCU. The COVID-related delay may have been a blessing in disguise for the studio, giving Raimi and writer Michael Waldron, who was brought on in February to rewrite the script, time to find their creative groove.

Other signs, including some casting videos, have pointed to an imminent start of production for the film which is expected to introduce multiversal hero America Chavez, Jericho Drumm and Clea to the MCU. With the news that production will kick off soon, casting news is sure to follow.

Stay tuned as this story develops.

  • UPDATE: Ed Boon Denies ‘Mortal Kombat 11’ Bruce Campbell Addition

UPDATE: Ed Boon Denies ‘Mortal Kombat 11’ Bruce Campbell Addition

Update: Looks like series creator Ed Boon took to Twitter yesterday to deny the confirmation of Bruce Campbell joining Mortal Kombat 11. In a tweet, he stated that many of the leaks are wrong with the video in question attached. There has been much discussion around the addition of Ash Williams to the game. At one point, it was heavily rumored until some pointed to RoboCop being added instead due to rights issues. Hopefully, one day we will see the icon join the franchise.

It has been getting crazy with how easy information gets online about upcoming releases or DLC. Mortal Kombat 11 is the next on the chopping block. This time data miner thethiny got their hands on the games’ files that revealed a total of 19 DLC characters. Unlike the Marvel’s Avengers data leaks, these don’t name the various characters. As such, it is likely possible that this includes the first Kombat Pack and the Aftermath DLC. Still, that means 10 more are currently planned. It was already teased that fan-favorite Mileena would be included but the rest were uncertain.

That’s not where this story ends. the voice actor behind Raiden, Richard Epcar recently held an Instagram live video to answer questions. During this video, he may have accidentally leaked another fan-favorite addition to the game’s roster. He openly states that Bruce Campbell will appear in the game in the next Kombat pack. The only thing that isn’t confirmed is if he will return as his Evil Dead character, Ash Williams.

Ash makes a lot of sense as an additional character. We’ve seen some amazing additions of third-party characters in MK11. As Epcar points out, Peter Weller returned to voice his iconic character RoboCop for the game. They even were allowed to recreate Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s Terminator with his face. Sadly, he did not voice the character as well. Either way, Campbell is a fantastic addition to the game. There may be a chance that Epcar was only informed that they plan on adding him but he seemed pretty sure it was already a done deal. We will see if they announce him as part of the next Kombat Pack in the coming weeks.

  • AT&T Won’t Sell Warner Bros. Games After All

AT&T Won’t Sell Warner Bros. Games After All

There was some uproar in the industry, as the parent company, AT&T was trying to sell their Warner Bros. Video-Game division. They’ve been looking into the possibility since the beginning of the year. Microsoft, Take-Two Interactive, EA, and even Activision were all potential buyers. The unit was valued at $4 billion after major releases like Mortal Kombat 11, the Lego, and the mobile game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Luckily, after much debate throughout the year, they have decided it wouldn’t be viable to sell.

There are some contributing factors that Bloomberg attributes to this change in attitude. Naturally, the ongoing pandemic saw a massive spike in video-game sales making the market very lucrative. In addition, the licensing needed to sell the unit may have complicated matters that would turn the short-term profit into a legal nightmare. Also, the rumored Harry Potter game is considered a lucrative investment that could see an exponential growth of the division.

This is a huge sigh of relief. This news follows the reveal of new DC-based games Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. As mentioned, licensing of these games if WB Games got sold would’ve been quite chaotic. It also could’ve ended up axing various projects no matter how far in development they are, as acquisition procedures come at a high cost. It was a wise decision by AT&T not to sell, as the market is showing continuous growth especially in these trying times. Just maybe, this also sparks a new interest in developing more projects at WB Games.

  • ‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’ Headed to Prague in October

‘THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER’ Headed to Prague in October

Many of us Sam and Bucky fans have been eagerly awaiting for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier to finish the series after being shut down back in mid-March. Mounting evidence makes me very confident the show will resume filming next week in Georgia (September 8th), as first suggested by our own Charles Murphy several weeks ago.

A lot of fans have also been wondering if the show will return to film in the beautiful city of Prague in the Czech Republic. When productions shut down there, they had close to two weeks left of planned filming. As I reported recently, Carnival Row recently finishing its second season there was a good sign for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as well, and it appears I was right.

Several sources and evidence gathered have confirmed to us that production on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is still planned to return to the Czech Republic beginning in October and extending into November.

Fingers crossed we still get the much anticipated Marvel series this year!

  • ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Confirms Data Leak With Kate Bishop Reveal

‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Confirms Data Leak With Kate Bishop Reveal

It’s only a few more days until Marvel’s Avengers officially releases. To kickstart their game, Crystal Dynamics has just released a brand new War Table. They promised it would offer us our first look at the post-launch content. There have been plenty of leaks and rumors about what we can expect. So, let’s talk about the major reveals of what the future holds for the Avengers Initiative.

The video started with a heartfelt tribute to Chadwick Boseman before revealing that they have changed a few aspects due to the recent events. It did end with the tease of Black Panther’s logo in tribute to the fallen King.

    Eg2Iur7VgAIsQbc

There were a few additional reveals for the game, which you can check out here:

    • Villain Sectors will feature iconic villain showdowns, they teased additional fights with Taskmaster and Abomination.
    • Secret S.H.I.E.L.D. vaults can be found throughout the game similar to the Beta.
    • A new villain group was finally confirmed besides A.I.M. The game will also include the Watchdogs. They are an anti-Inhuman terrorist group from the comics.
    • Events have been confirmed for the game (weekly or seasonal) that will include exclusive items or skins.
    • They are adding a new outpost for S.H.I.E.L.D. post-launch.
    • Mega Hives and a secret A.I.M. lab have been revealed as additional enemy gauntlets.

Alongside this came the confirmation that Kate Bishop will be the first playable addition to the roster. This also confirms the leak we saw from the Beta a month ago. Her story will continue where the main storyline ended. Also, they teased that it will also introduce a new villain into the game as well. These types of story expansions will be titled operations and are connected to the new outpost.

That was quite a lot to unpack there but it all sounds exciting. Also, the next War Table will also reveal something I have been asking for since the Beta, a content road map. They confirmed that Kate Bishop will be the first additional playable character, whose story leads into Hawkeye’s operation. It is surprising that we will get two arrow-based characters back-to-back. This might be linked to the early statement that some plans have been changed out of respect towards recent events. Either way, it also looks like Kate will be a unique character and not just a reskin of Hawkeye, which means that all the leaked characters will be unique additions to the Avengers roster. Cannot wait to see what else Crystal Dynamics has planned for the future and get my hands on the game.

  • PlayStation 5 Not Backward Compatible With PSX, PS2 or PS3

There has been much debate on how much backward compatibility will be possible for PlayStation 5. Microsoft proudly proclaimed that their next entry Xbox Series X would be able to play games as far back as the original’s 2001 Xbox library. So, it seemed like a perfect opportunity for its biggest competitor to follow suit. The thought of playing my original Final Fantasy VII or PS2’s Persona 4 on the same console sounded like a promising prospect. Sadly, it looks like that won’t be the case after all.

Someone asked a question over on Ubisoft’s Support page about upgrading from a PlayStation 4 to the next-gen console. In it, they may have accidentally confirmed that it will only support titles from the previous generation. This means any games from the original PlayStation up until PlayStation 3 will not be playable on the latest entry. We still have to keep in mind this isn’t a confirmation by Sony, so they may have some long-term plans potentially that production companies aren’t informed by yet.

This is a bit disappointing. Of course, the next-gen console is there to play the latest games. Still, it’s just a waste to not embrace the history that came before. After five generations of consoles, it’s the perfect time to pay tribute to the ones that started it all. Also, each new generation makes it difficult to keep older consoles around due to a lack of space or plug-ins on the TV. This would’ve been the perfect opportunity to remedy this issue and celebrate the past. Here’s hoping that at least the next-gen console will include the return of some classic franchises with new entries. I am still not losing hope on the return of Sly Cooper for the next generation.

  • Octavio E. Rodriguez Joins ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2’ as Head of Story

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is probably my most anticipated film. 2022 can’t come soon enough so we finally find out how the story continues after Miles grew into becoming his own version of Spider-Man. Will we see the return of Peter B. Parker or Gwen Stacy? Was the ending tease of Spider-Man 2099 going be followed-up? Will it make me cry in cinemas again? So many questions that require an answer. We haven’t had much news ever since it was announced for 2022. Luckily, animation veteran Octavio E. Rodriguez has joined the production as Head of Story.

    https://twitter.com/octavio991/status/1300277405102174208

Rodriguez has quite a history in animation. He was the director of multiple episodes of The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants. Worked on a variety of Pixar films as story artists, which include The Incredibles 2 and Coco. He also was a story artist on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This will not be his first time working on a project involving the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. He also was the storyboard artist for The Spectacular Spider-Man episode Interactions. Hopefully, this means we get a chance of that incarnation of the character appearing in the film.

Into the Spider-Verse 2 has been teased to expand the already crazy references on Spider-Man history. There were rumors of the original Japanese Spider-Man making an appearance and the various logos used in the first teaser have been analyzed with a magnifying glass at this point. Personally, I do hope we get more returning voice actors from the original cartoons and a crossover with the live-action films. It would be great to see Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield in the same room. Maybe we see them meet 1994’s Christopher Daniel Barnes and Spectacular’s Josh Keaton, as they exchange their experiences as heroes. One can only dream.
