E3: ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Adds ‘Tekken’s Kazuya

It looks like the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character has finally been announced in a rather grim fashion. We see some classic Nintendo characters get thrown down a cliff in a gruesome fashion. It pulls up to reveal its a recreation of how Kazuya was turned into the man he is today. Yes, Tekken finally gets an official fighter in the game and it wasn’t the flagship characters of Heihachi or Jin, but the estranged son and father. It’ll surely be a great addition to the franchise.

  • ‘Loki’ Creator Further Calls into Question the Canon Status of ‘Agents of SHIELD’

‘Loki’ Creator Further Calls into Question the Canon Status of ‘Agents of SHIELD’

Ever since Marvel Studios merged with Marvel TV with their Disney+ venture, we’ve all been keeping an eye out for clues about the canonicity of the ABC and Netflix series. Now that the franchise is venturing into the multiverse with Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, it could get even more complicated. All eyes were on the latest series heading to Disney+, Loki, to offer some kind of details on how it may fit into the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe. When the first episode showcased the iconic sequence of Phil Coulson inspiring the Avengers, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to allude to his resurrection in Agents of SHIELD. In an interview with Fandom, the show’s head writer Michael Waldron offered a statement on its absence:

No, look, that is one other tendril of the multiverse, perhaps. I think just seeing mention of Coulson again, the very fact that it raises those questions, is exciting.

Now, he seems to kind of confirm that whatever happened in the series might be part of a different multiverse. Yet, as we theorized a few days ago, the first episode introduces us to the Sacred Timeline that exists to prevent another multiversal war. So, it technically doesn’t yet exist because neither does the multiverse. So, it currently wouldn’t be canon but will once the Sacred timeline starts falling apart. Waldron is also the writer of the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel which will explore the fallout of those events.

Hopefully, when that happens, we also get a visual reference to it in the series, as they might tease the different timelines that might also connect directly into What If. We could get a brief cameo of the resurrected SHIELD from the last season’s finale, or maybe Coulson alongside Chloe Bennet‘s Daisy Johnson. Whatever they decide to do, here’s hoping the picture becomes clearer as the multiverse expands.

  • Connecting Imaginary Dots: Odin’s Wake and the Reforging of Mjolnir

Connecting Imaginary Dots: Odin’s Wake and the Reforging of Mjolnir

Early this morning, Twitter user @fernx18 alerted Murphy’s Multiverse of the following detective work by user @loventhunders:

    Image

As the original post points out, it appears that the Asgardians have created a monument to Odin at the spot where he died in Thor: Ragnarok. His death allowed Hela to escape her prison and subsequently shatter Mjolnir nearby. While it’s all speculation on our part, it’s possible that the set photos above are part of a longer scene in which the Asgardians say goodbye to the Allfather with a friends-and family-style memorial. Thor has been fairly busy since his father passed away what with Asgard being destroyed, half the universe being wiped out and having to travel through time to fix it, so it’s probably about time to get around to honoring his father. It doesn’t seem like much of a stretch to assume that the set photos that captured Matt Damon, Sam Neill, Melissa McCarthy and others as they act out an Asgardian drama retelling Odin’s final days could be a part of that celebration (they were shot around the same time); additionally, it also opens up a very organic way for Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster to be reintroduced after having been sidelined since the events of Thor: The Dark World.

The memorial can be used to catch Foster up to speed (as well as new fans of the franchise) and, as we’ve seen in another set picture below, get her in front of Mjolnir where the enchanted hammer can work its magic.

    Image

While a common theory among fans has been that one or to other or both of Jane and Mjolnir would be brought in from the multiverse, the collection of evidence here seems to strongly support the idea that both are the Jane and Mjolnir that we’ve gotten to know. In every way, that makes for a stronger story as both Thor and the audience have relationships with both characters. We’ve seen Mjolnir reforged before in the comics (recently in Jason Aaron’s War of the Realms) and while it seems unlikely that Jane is going to fly it into the sun in Thor: Love and Thunder, the set photos do make it seem like something specific to Jane is the key to reforging the hammer. Perhaps it’s her previous connection to the Reality Stone, but it does seem crucial that the hammer can only be reforged by or for Jane, otherwise half of Avengers: Infinity War would seem to have been a huge waste of time.

Great catch @loventhunders! We’ll see how all this plays out next year what Thor: Love and Thunder hits cinemas around the world.

  • RUMOR: South Korean Actor Park Seo-Joon Joins Cast of ‘THE MARVELS’

RUMOR: South Korean Actor Park Seo-Joon Joins Cast of ‘THE MARVELS’

It looks like Marvel is adding another talented Korean actor to its ranks. According to reports from Korean outlets, dramatic actor Park Seo-Joon will film a role in Nia DiCosta’s The Marvels later this year. The report specifies that Seo-Joon will depart for the United States during the second half of 2021, following the completion of filming for his webtoon adaptation Concrete Utopia. Supposing the rumor is true, Seo-Joon will become the second South Korean star to join the MCU. Ma Dong Seok will appear as Gilgamesh in Chloe Zhao’s Eternals.

When asked to comment on the report, the actor’s agency Awesome ENT gave a short, simple, and suspicious response:

The Seoul actor is known for his roles in dramas and thrillers. He found initial success with appearances in 2015’s Kill Me, Heal Me, and The Chronicles of Evil, before rising to stardom with leading roles in 2017’s Midnight Runners and tvN’s romantic comedy series What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim. It’s unknown what role he could be taking in The Marvels, but he joins a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Iman Vellani, Teyonah Parris, and Brie Larson.

The latter three will reprise their MCU roles as Kamala Khan, Monica Rambeau, and Carol Danvers, better known as all three titular Marvels. The Captain Marvel sequel will act as the first time we see the superhero trio team up, following respective debuts in both the first film and Ms. Marvel. Up-and-coming director DaCosta will helm the film as a follow-up to her new installment in the Candyman franchise.

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Merchandise Offers First Look at Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Merchandise Offers First Look at Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor

The God of Thunder is set to make yet another solo appearance in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, a film with a huge cast that includes old and new faces for the franchise. A few years back at SDCC, when Marvel began to unveil their upcoming slate for Phase Four, it was announced that director Taika Waititi would be returning for another romp with the Asgardian hero. It was also announced that Jane Foster herself, Natalie Portman, would be returning and co-starring with Hemsworth once again, but would be sporting an all-new look, this time wielding Mjolnir and become Mighty Thor.Following the recent leaks surrounding Love and Thunder merch, this one gives us a much better idea of what some of our favorite characters will be rocking in the upcoming film. The most interesting part of this merchandise is of course our very first look at Jane Foster in her full Thor garb, somehow wielding the hammer after we witnessed its demise at the hands of Hela. We also get a glimpse of what appear to be new gear for both Thor and Valkyrie. The biggest question here, and the one we’ve had since its announcement, is just how Foster has the hammer after we watched it burst into pieces. It feels like the multiverse could have something to do with it, with the hammer or Foster or both arriving from anither Earth. All questions will be answered. Thor: Love and Thunder is set to release in theaters on May 11th, 2022.SOURCE: Instagram

  • Jaimie Alexander Reveals Her Involvement With Millenium’s ‘RED SONJA‘

Jaimie Alexander Reveals Her Involvement With Millenium’s ‘RED SONJA‘

It would seem Marvel star Jaimie Alexander has landed a role in Millenium Films’ Red Sonja reboot. The actress revealed the news herself, posting an image of the movies’ script to her Instagram story with a caption that basically confirms her involvement with the project. While she didn’t say what role she’d assume for the picture, it’s likely her character is a supporting one.

The leading part of Red Sonja has already gone to fellow MCU alum Hannah John-Kamen. However, it’s worth noting Alexander is well-known for her warrior woman roles. On top of her leading role in NBC’s Blindspot, she famously portrayed Lady Sif in the first two Thor films, as well as the series Agents of SHIELD. She is set to reprise the role for Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder. She shared the announcement in her Instagram Story, which has since gotten deleted but luckily Twitter user @CreamorScream got a screenshot of it:

Red Sonja is will serve as a reboot of the swords and sorcery franchise that began in 1985 with Brigitte Nelson in the title role. Though Nelson’s film was a critical flop, it became a cult hit, and a continuation of the series has been in the works for decades. The project’s time in development hell saw names like Robert Rodriguez, Amber Heard, and Rose McGowan attached in different capacities. Joey Soloway, the creator of Amazon’s award-winning series Transparent, is set to direct the film from a script by Tomb Raider writer Tasha Huo. She replaces disgraced filmmaker Bryan Singer, who was fired from the project following serious sexual assault allegations in 2019. Red Sonja currently has no release date.

  • REVIEW: “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” is a LOUDER Version of its Predecessor

REVIEW: “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” is a LOUDER Version of its Predecessor

Let’s get one thing straight off the bat. I did not go into this film expecting a masterclass of cinematic action. I based my expectations on my experience with the first film in 2017 and set the bar for its sequel at around a decent action popcorn flick that you could have a couple of chuckles with your friends. And having that expectation going into the movie probably aided the moviegoing experience overall. The Patrick Hughes-directed sequel somehow managed to essentially be a much louder version of its predecessor. 25% of that loudness can be attributed to the decent amount of action, explosions, and high stake chases while the other 75% can be attributed to the rest of the cast; 50% of it going to Salma Hayek.

    PRO: The A+ Star-Studded Cast

Without a doubt, one of the saving graces in this movie was the superb acting from this stellar cast. Ryan Reynolds once again nails his role as Michael Bryce, ex-AAA Bodyguard. Comparing his performance in this series of films as the safety-obsessed, careful-to-detail ex-bodyguard to his more outlandish and unhinged portrayal of Deadpool really is a testament to the range that so very few actors can deliver when it comes to their films. Samuel L. Jackson also returns as the lawless hitman, Darius Kincaid. There was no limit to his resorting to violence, guns, puns, and a whole ton of expletives. You could tell Jackson had fun working on this project and enjoyed every second of screentime he shared with his costars. Speaking of co-stars, Antonio Banderas was introduced to the franchise as this film’s big bad, Aristotle Papadopolous. Comparing it to the antagonist of the sequel’s predecessor, Banderas’ role in this film kind of fell flat, mainly because I couldn’t invest in Banderas as a character. At least with Gary Oldman, you could feel invested in the motives and be convinced that this was a dangerous individual. But in the end, he served his purpose. The true wild card of this film was without a doubt Morgan Freeman. The collective gasps and shocks in the theater really delivered as one of the film’s coolest twists. And, saving the best for last, Salma Hayek just absolutely killed it as Sonia Kincaid. Her completely unhinged portrayal as the wife of the most dangerous hitman in the world really is on par with Samuel L. Jackson’s performance and both were able to play off each other so well in so many aspects. Her interactions with her costars were fantastic and she pretty much stole the scenes she was in with her incredibly powerful voice and loud use of Spanish expletives. She just goes to show that you should never piss off a Latina woman.

    CON: Almost everything else

Let’s break it down by category:

Cinematography: The shots and visual aesthetic of the film were great. The sights and locations all across the Mediterranean were fantastic. Where it falls flat was more on the editing process. There were so many scenes that cut from one place to another and really affected the pacing of the film overall. It felt as if there were some pieces missing when going from one scene to another. Regardless, the overall grade was a B-.

Script: The writing in this film was just all over the place. There were some points where the film really tried to make genuine approaches to the psyche behind Bryce’s backstory before making a complete joke out of it. Every character’s motives in this film were simple and to the point and I don’t really see that any of these characters grew thanks to the events of the story so they all remained 1 dimensional to me. So, the grade for the writing there was a C.

Sound and Score: Atli Örvarsson really delivered on the score of this film. The 70s inspired Cop vibe was fantastic and loved it through and through. The grade there was an A+.

Final Score: If you’re looking for a film where you don’t have to think too much into the character’s motives and want a couple of good laughs and a good time, then The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard really has got you covered on that front. So the final grade for this film overall is B-.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard hits theaters on June 16th.

  • New ‘The Boys’ Concept Art Offers Closer Look at Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy

New ‘The Boys’ Concept Art Offers Closer Look at Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy

It looks like The Boys team wanted to showcase Jensen Ackles‘ new character, Soldier Boy, in style. The Wrap released an even better look at his design that was revealed a week ago in the form of concept art. It seems nothing was lost in translation into live-action, as his live-action design seems very close to the original. The only real difference one might notice is that the knife’s placement on his hip is a bit different. We still don’t know quite what role he’ll have in the new season, as our group of misfits continues their fight against Vought Enterprises and their army of superheroes.

Hopefully, we’ll get an update on the next season in the near future. They’ve been keeping the plot tightly under wraps with only small glimpses making their way online. Eric Kripke, the creator behind CW’s Supernatural, brought Ackles on board. The suit was designed by Laura Jean Shannon and showcases some strong Captain America inspirations, as she also shared her enthusiasm over the design:

Soldier Boy is the original badass. Our goal was to highlight a bygone era of overt masculinity and grit. With that pedigree we dove headfirst into baking in an all-American quality grounded in a military soldier’s practicality with a heavy dose of old school cowboy swagger. We knew that the actor had to have Steve McQueen looks and chops with a John Wayne attitude. Luckily Jensen Ackles embodies all of that.

At first glance, it also seems they are going for a very distinct version of the character and embracing the original version rather than the legacy characters. There is still a chance he has some knock-off versions imitating his brand, but he is considered Vought’s first superhero in The Boys universe. Here’s hoping we find out more soon.

  • RUMOR: ‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’ to Feature ‘The Clone Wars’ Barriss Offee

RUMOR: ‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’ to Feature ‘The Clone Wars’ Barriss Offee

It looks like we are finally getting our first tidbits on the upcoming live-action The Mandalorian spin-off focused on Ahsoka Tano. The Star Wars: The Clone Wars character gained quite a bit of popularity and finally adapted into live-action during Din Djarin’s travels to uncover Grogu’s heritage. In the series, she got played by Rosario Dawson, and it wasn’t long until a spin-off series got announced. We haven’t heard much from it since, but it seems Illuminerdi may have gotten their hands on some curious castings. They state that Lucasfilm is currently casting Barris Offee.
The character had a substantial role in The Clone Wars and was voiced by Meredith Salenger. However, she made her live-action debut in Attack of the Clones. At the time, Nalini Krishan took on the role. There is no word if they are recasting or looking for Krishan to reprise the role.
In the series, she was a Padawan along with Ahsoka. Together they developed a strong bond. It all changed when she became disenfranchised with the Jedi Order and bombed their temple. Not just that, she even framed her former ally for it. As Offee fell to the dark side, she may appear as an Inquisitor. It is still heavily rumored the series will focus on Ahoska’s search for Thrawn, but she might be a recurring villain that keeps her company on her quest. Whatever direction they decide to go, it’s going to be exciting to finally find out what happened to Ezra Bridger since Star Wars: Rebels.

  • ‘IRON FIST’ Star Jessica Henwick Joins Cast of ‘KNIVES OUT’ Sequel

‘IRON FIST’ Star Jessica Henwick Joins Cast of ‘KNIVES OUT’ Sequel

The Hollywood star power of Jessica Henwick continues to rise. The actress has been set as the newest member of Rian Johnson’s highly-anticipated Knives Out sequel. Deadline reports Henwick will round out a star-studded cast that already includes names like Leslie Odom Jr, Kathryn Hahn, and Edward Norton. The new ensemble cast will be joined by Daniel Craig, whose investigator Benoit Blanc will appear as the only returning character from the critically-acclaimed first film. Plot details regarding the sequel are essentially non-existent, so it’s nearly impossible to say what role Henwick’s character will play in the second film. We can only hope her ability to simultaneously charm and intimidate is put to good use.

Henwick first caught the public’s eye with her leading role on Marvel and Netflix’s Iron Fist series. While that project flopped with fans, the actress’ character Colleen Wing was almost universally celebrated. Henwick also appeared briefly in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with her pilot character eventually getting an expanded role in the comic adaptations of that universe. Also on her resumé are roles on HBO’s smash hit Game of Thrones and the 2020 horror film Underwater, in which she appeared alongside Kristen Stewart. Well-known for her ability to kick serious butt, Henwick can next be seen co-starring in Lana Wachowski’s The Matrix 4 with Keanu Reeves and the Russo brother’s The Grey Man, with Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling. With the Knives Out sequel now under her belt, it seems Henwick’s success will only continue to grow.
