  • New ‘Loki’ Funko Pops Feature A Pair of Your Favorite TVA Employees

New ‘Loki’ Funko Pops Feature A Pair of Your Favorite TVA Employees

It has become a weekly occurrence to see some brand new merchandise from Funko for the latest Disney+ series since Wandavision. It allows them to showcase characters that made their debut in that week’s episode, especially if they were surprise appearances. So far, we’ve gotten Funkos for Pietro Maximoff, Billy, Tommy, White Vision, and even Sam Wilson as Captain America. We were excited to see what Loki might offer, as it’ll introduce us to different Variants of our favorite heroes throughout its runtime.

It looks like the weekly tradition continues, as Funko has unveiled two more Pop Vinyl figures from the Loki line. This wave includes the TVA’s Ravonna Rennslayer and B-15. If you look closer, the figures have a few curious details like Rennslayers tiny Miss Minutes, who sadly didn’t cut a figure of her own. Another fun detail that many may have missed in the show is the markings on B-15’s helmet. The Tallys possibly keeping track of just how many variants she has zapped from the time stream during her time at the TVA, she gets the job done.

With the series reaching its halfway mark next week it’ll be interesting to see what reveals come next and hopefully get to see a figure of our latest big reveal, Sylvie in an upcoming wave from Funko. Marvel Studios Loki is currently streaming on Disney+ with the first two episodes streaming now.

  • REPORT: ‘What If’ Will Introduce an Unlikely Alliance in a Killmonger-Focused Episode

REPORT: ‘What If’ Will Introduce an Unlikely Alliance in a Killmonger-Focused Episode

Some time ago, the first merchandise found its way into stores from the upcoming Marvel Studios’ series What If. On it, we saw that Michael B. Jordan‘s Erik Killmonger will appear and might even have a larger role in one of the upcoming episodes of the studio’s first venture into animation. Now, Illumiinerdi is reporting that the character will work alongside Tony Stark. So, there might be something that shifts his motivation to leave his ambitions of taking over Wakanda behind and instead go international. As they point out, the character does have some things in common, such as both being former MIT students. It’s uncertain if this storyline has some kind of connection to Tony’s trip to Sakaar, which leaked through a LEGO set some time ago.

Illuminerdi has not offered any details regarding what we can expect from the episode. They also didn’t discuss if he might potentially take on a heroic role, or will return to a more villainous path at one point. The series is currently set to premiere in the summer, but they are still playing coy on when exactly. Currently, all eyes are on Disney+’s venture into the multiverse through Loki, which will build up into What If and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Hopefully, we might get a trailer in the coming weeks that might give us a glimpse at Killmonger’s storyline and how he might end up working alongside Stark.

  • Time Keepers Are Always Watching: Exploring a Potential Dark Secret of the TVA

Time Keepers Are Always Watching: Exploring a Potential Dark Secret of the TVA

Loki gives us a thrilling adventure through time and space. It introduced us to the secretive organization that lives outside of time known as the Time Variance Authority or the TVA. The first two episodes offer us a glimpse at the daily life of the bureaucratic society that spends their every day to preserve the Sacred Timeline. They exist to abide by the rules set by the Time Keepers, who mysteriously don’t show their face to the organization except for Ramona Renslayer as revealed in the second episode. Strangely, a top official like Mobius has never even seen them. We also notice a lot of time-based propaganda hidden in the background of the offices. Is there a darker truth hidden deep beneath the TVA’s archives?

Loki: The TVA Is More Powerful Than the Infinity Stones | CBR

The latest episode spends a lot of time exploring the worldviews of our two protagonists. It all surrounds a simple discussion about Mobius’ love for jet skis. We learn in the same episode that only Renslayer gets to keep gifts from some of their cases, which is odd considering every agent is told not to disrupt the timeline. Still, he may swipe a magazine that got discontinued, as many of the products they consume like his favorite drink Josta Soda, only had short-lived shelf lives. Yet, as we learn in the first episode, some of them have no idea what exists outside of their desks. It’s almost as if their entire existence is only to serve the Time Keepers. The TVA may be just a pawn in keeping the timeline alive that truly only serves the Time Keepers to ensure their existence. As time keeps looping, perhaps they are as well without realizing it.

Loki Season 2 Reportedly in Development

We also briefly discussed the massive amount of propaganda that you can find in many of the TVA-focused shots. There are the massive statues of the three Time Keepers that are spread throughout the location. Miss Minutes’ introduction video also makes them seem like all-mighty beings that rule over time and existence. They are never given names but exist with the cryptic description of their role. In a way, it keeps the mystery alive of their otherworldly role. In a way, it is the belief that keeps these begins where they are and it seems fitting that it’s another god-like being that questions their rules, especially after he was forced to question his role in the timeline. The series plays around with Loki’s classic line in which he claims to be “burdened with glorious purpose.” Yet, it got twisted on its head when he was forced to face the inevitability of his existence in the first episode. Perhaps the TVA will go through that same lesson once Sylvie’s plans are put into motion.

  • ‘Mortal Kombat’s Hiroyuki Sanada Joins ‘John Wick 4’

‘Mortal Kombat’s Hiroyuki Sanada Joins ‘John Wick 4’

The next installment of John Wick has been adding name after name and doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. In a report from collider, Army of the Dead and Mortal Kombat star Hiroyuki Sanada is the next to join. Not much is known about Sanada’s character. all we know is that he’ll go by the name Watanabe, which confirms earlier reports about a character that was teased by writer Michael Finch. Sanada will join a sprawling cast of stars, which includes Rina Sawayama, Bill Skarsgard, Shamier Anderson, and Donnie Yen.

The fourth installment in the Wick franchise will begin filming this summer in France, Japan, and Germany. Chad Stahelski takes over as director and will produce alongside Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee. Keanu Reeves will serve on the project as executive producer alongside Louise Rosner. Michael Finch and Shay Hatten, who previously worked on Army of The Dead, wrote the script for the upcoming film. Stahelski shared his enthusiasm on the casting of Sanada:

Having long admired Hiroyuki as both actor and action performer, I’m thrilled and honored to welcome him to the John Wick family.

The actor is currently set to star in David Leitch’s upcoming action-thriller Bullet Train, who originally directed the first three installments in the Wick Franchise. This will be the first film in the franchise without David Leitch directing and Derek Kolstad writing on the project, so it’ll be interesting to see how they handle the franchise going forward. The cast certainly seems promising, as they continue to add one iconic action star after another. If John Wick is known for anything, it is certainly stellar action sequences and it looks like we can expect more of that in the fourth entry.

  • How ‘Loki’s Villain Reveal May Set Up the Return of the Original Multiverse

How ‘Loki’s Villain Reveal May Set Up the Return of the Original Multiverse

The latest episode of Loki has finally dropped, and it gave us our first look at the deadly Variant of our titular character. It was indeed Sophia DiMartino playing a female version of the God of Mischief. Yet, if you remember, earlier in the episode, we are introduced to various Variants that all have one thing in common, they always have a resemblance to Tom Hiddleston. It also matches what we see teased in the first trailer for What If echoing Variants of existing Marvel Cinematic Universe characters. So, while DiMartino‘s accent seems inspired, there are many distinctions from her original counterpart that make her stand out as a unique character. Perhaps her origins are connected to the original multiverse?

There is one curious detail that may hint at DiMartino‘s Loki potentially being a unique incarnation. The Spanish credits give her the name Sylvie and not Loki. Now, that name might ring a bell for comic readers as a version of the villainous Enchantress was named Sylvie Lushton in the 616 universes. Luckily, there is an actual confirmation within the episode. In the sequence where Loki goes through paperwork on the past events, there is a document that confirms her name is Sylvie Laufeydottir. The detail got uncovered by Reddit user LTC145, who shared it on Reddit.

So, if the Sacred Timeline always entails Loki Laufeyson going through his history, a version going by the name Sylvie would not match with the rules from the first episode. We also have to keep in mind the TVA doesn’t address people by how they identify. They reference them by their birth name, such as Loki technically archived as Laufeyson rather than Odinson. So, even if the files teased that he is genderfluid, each version from the episode’s opening still went by “Loki.” There is also the fact that DiMartino‘s version openly was disgusted by the name even though she doesn’t deny that she is a different version of the God of Mischief. It reminds me of a theory where we believed that the upcoming Spider-Men from the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb films might be part of the original Multiversal War, as they aren’t all Tom Holland look-a-likes. So, she too could be part of a time before the Time Keepers created the current MCU timeline.

There even is a chance she might have taken part in the first Multiversal War and is a remnant that waited for the right time to put her plan into motion. It would also explain why she is so focused on creating brand new branches. It’ll distract the TVA long enough to infiltrate their base and face the Time Keepers. It’ll give her a chance to restore the original multiverse and bring back the timeline she lost. Her actions may also lead into Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s introduction of Spider-Man variants and forces Doctor Strange on the path to face the titular Multiverse of Madness. Whatever the future may hold, the introduction of this unique Variant will push the MCU’s multiverse into unfamiliar territory and the TVA will get quite a bit busier in the near future.

  • UPDATE: ‘BLADE’ Star Wesley Snipes No Longer In Talks For ‘JOHN WICK 4’

UPDATE: ‘BLADE’ Star Wesley Snipes No Longer In Talks For ‘JOHN WICK 4’

UPDATE: It seems that there was some truth to the Wesley Snipes rumors. Sadly, it also looks like negotiations didn’t end well, as Borys Kit took to Twitter to reveal that while there were discussions between the actor and Lionsgate, it didn#t work out in the end.

The John Wick franchise is adding an action legend to its already impressive cast. According to a new report from The Illuminerdi, Wesley Snipes is currently in negotiations to join the tentatively titled John Wick 4. The actor, who is best known for his starring role as Eric Brooks in the original Blade trilogy, supposedly will play a supporting role in the upcoming sequel as an experienced swordsman. He would join an ensemble that is rumored to include the fellow legend, and Rogue One standout, Donnie Yen. He’ll play an old friend of Keanu Reeves’ titular character. Bill Skarsgard, of It fame, Laurence Fishburne, and pop star Rina Sawayama are also set to play roles in the film.

An appearance in John Wick 4 would mark Snipes’ return to big-budget action flicks, with the actor’s legal troubles keeping him away from the spotlight for quite some time. He has not participated in a project of this magnitude since 2014’s The Expendables 3. Nevertheless, the past couple of years, and a friendship with Eddie Murphy, have helped the once mega-star make a comeback, as he had supporting roles in both Dolemite Is My Name and Coming 2 America.

If this rumor turns out to be true, Snipes will find himself working with one of modern cinema’s best action directors in Chad Stahelski, who returns to the Wick franchise for the fourth time. Long-time series writer Derek Kolstad will not come back for the latest entry, and will instead be replaced by the capable duo of Michael Finch and Shay Hatten.

  • Namor and the Invaders: Marvel Studios’ Best Chance to Rewrite History

Namor and the Invaders: Marvel Studios’ Best Chance to Rewrite History

Before there were Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy, there were The Invaders. The group, created in the 40s and branded as the “All-Winners Squad,” came together during World War Two to help American forces take down Hitler and the Axis powers. The team has since been a recurring presence in the comics, often appearing in flashbacks showing the valiant efforts of heroes now lost to time. Captain America: The First Avenger was riddled with references to the Invaders, but with Cap’s time in WWII coming and going, it seemed we missed our chance to see the team in live-action. That is, until it got reported that Namor, the Sub-Mariner, will make his live-action debut in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Namor’s arrival to the MCU opens the door for this team to join him in the public eye, and with some tweaking, that bygone group could become Marvel’s most timely heroes yet.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showed us Marvel isn’t afraid to retcon their own history. Revelations about Isaiah Bradley showcase how they can introduce characters and stories that we haven’t seen before. The filmmakers at Marvel seem to have made the bold and geographically correct decision to make Namor and his Atlanteans descendants of the Mayan Empire, as evidenced by the hiring of Tenoch Huerta. As such, he wouldn’t fit the norm of that time’s propaganda. If the Sub-Mariner had emerged from the depths to fight Nazis, it’s a fair criticism to say the government might have covered it up to prevent societal panic and added these victories to Steve Rogers’ legacy. After all, S.H.I.E.L.D. does seem to know something important is in the Atlantic. With that in mind, what’s stopping the same logic from extending to the whole team?

Marvel Studios has a golden opportunity to craft a film, or Disney+ series, about of group of outcasts who come together to end a war in the wake of Captain America’s disappearance. A team consisting of heroes that hid from the world, and whose legacy would eventually be swept under the rug by an ungrateful nation. An Invaders project can potentially be a perfect thematic extension of the “hidden heroes” concept presented via Isaiah Bradley in FATWS. I think Marvel should seize the opportunity to rewrite MCU history.

Outside of Namor and Captain America, the Invaders roster has always been populated by lesser-known names from Marvel’s vast library. Due to the timing of their creation, these characters were often on the campy side with wacky origin stories and outlandish adventures. It wouldn’t be too difficult to take costumed vigilantes of the day and change their features to make them a little more interesting for the modern audience. Some changes could even use ideas that have existed in comics and connect the story to the grander MCU with ease. A good example of this would be one of the Invader’s most frequent members, Union Jack.

The most well-known Union Jack is James Falsworth, who made his singular MCU appearance as a Howling Commando in The First Avenger. He never went by the Union Jack moniker, but that doesn’t mean it can’t still exist in the Falsworth line. His daughter, Jacqueline, also became a costumed vigilante for a time. She went by the name Spitfire, inspired by the warplane because the form-fitting uniforms women were obligated to wear in comics at the time did not allow for the Union Jack to fit across her chest. In the MCU, Jacqueline could be reimagined as James’ younger sister, who joins the war in his honor after his tragic death. Because of her gender, she would be forced to operate under the guise of testosterone, wearing a mask and using the “Union Jack” name to hide her own.

Now, take this line of thought and apply it to the whole team. A Miss America who’s perfect in every way, except for her sexuality. A Blazing Skull whose flaming head spits in the face of Christianity, and whose Japanese origins scare the white Allied forces. The list could go on, but you probably get the point. Much like they did with Bradley, the United States would alter their history books to ensure school children did not learn about these sedulous heroes. Like it or not, comic adaptations have become a primary source of entertainment for today’s youth. In the same vein as HBO’s Watchmen unveiling the horror of the Tulsa Massacre to a brand new audience, Marvel’s Invaders could be a way to teach family-friendly viewers that what they learned in school wasn’t always the whole truth.

  • ‘MORTAL KOMBAT LEGENDS: SCORPION’S REVENGE’ Getting Sequel From Warner Bros. Animation

‘MORTAL KOMBAT LEGENDS: SCORPION’S REVENGE’ Getting Sequel From Warner Bros. Animation

Warner Bros. has finally announced a Mortal Kombat sequel, just not the one you were expecting. It has been revealed via The Hollywood Reporter that 2020’s animated Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge is getting a sequel, officially titled Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms. Set to be released later this year, the new project will see the return of Joel McHale and Jennifer Carpenter as the voices of iconic fighters Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, respectively. The large majority of the first film’s cast will join them, including Patrick Seitz as Scorpion, Fred Tatasciore as Shao Khan, and Jordan Rodrigues as Liu Kang. New featured voices joining the world of kombat are Matthew Mercer as both Stryker and Smoke, Bayardo De Murguia as Sub-Zero, Emily O’Brien as Jade, and Debra Wilson as D’Vorah. The animated follow-up will also see the return of director Ethan Spaulding and writer Jeremy Adams, with franchise co-creator Ed Boon serving as a creative consultant.

Scorpion’s Revenge mostly followed the same plot as the original video game and the first live-action film, but from the perspective of the franchise’s functioning mascot, Scorpion. The story centered around Hanzo Hasashi seeking vengeance for the death of his family, with the classic events of Shang Tsung’s fateful Mortal Kombat tournament playing out in the background. After a mostly happy ending, the movie leaves off with a furious Shao Khan ordering preparations be made for an invasion of Earthrealm. This is presumably where Battle of the Realms will pick up, fulfilling screenwriter Adams one time promise of a “bigger” sequel.

  • Disney+ Officially Shifting All Original Series to Wednesday Premieres After ‘Loki’s Success

Disney+ Officially Shifting All Original Series to Wednesday Premieres After ‘Loki’s Success

It turns out Tom Hiddleston wasn’t lying when he said Wednesdays are the new Fridays. After his show, Loki, debuted to record-breaking numbers last week on Disney+, the streaming service has officially made the move to leave weekends behind and shift all original programming to Wednesday episode drops. Only Disney+ original films will continue to be made available on Fridays. The shift in their schedule will affect the platform globally, with every series set to debut after July 1 changing its initial release date. For example, the anticipated Monsters Inc. spin-off Monsters at Work will now drop its first episode on July 7 instead of July 2, and Disney’s Turner & Hooch reboot series will move its debut from July 16 to July 21. Other series impacted include Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life, Growing Up Animal, Short Circuit, Turning the Tables with Robin Roberts, and The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse.

The change is a notable one, considering Disney has been fully committed to the classic weekend episode drop since its launch. Marvel’s previous series, WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, both adhered to the policy with great success, as did Lucasfilm’s The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian. It would seem Loki debuted to astronomical numbers if they were convincing enough to alter a working machine. Disney+’s current Star Wars project, The Bad Batch, will not be affected by the new corporate policy. Episodes will continue to be released on Fridays. Yet, it will most likely be the last high-profile series to do so on the streaming service.

  • REVIEW: ‘Luca’ Feels Like Pixar’s First Studio Ghibli Film

REVIEW: ‘Luca’ Feels Like Pixar’s First Studio Ghibli Film

To say that Luca is Pixar’s best work to date feels trite given the brilliance of each film the company puts on a consistent level, which is unlike any other animation studio. I mean, last year saw the release of the beautifully gut-wrenching existential reflection that was Soul, which I absolutely adored. In the years before that, you had Coco, Inside Out, and The Incredibles sequel! If Pixar was a band, they’d probably be the Beatles during their studio years, where every single album was of note. We live in an age of Pixar films where there’s an argument to be made that each release is their best so there’s almost no point in proclaiming why Luca is the best when their next one might just surpass it.

But with that said, it’s hard not to look at Luca as one of “those” Disney classics. The spirit of the film feels like a homage to the quaint stories of old that brim with wonder and awe. When I spoke to director Enrico Casarosa, he mentioned the huge influence Hayao Miyazaki and the Studio Ghibli films had on his own ideations of friendship and adolescence as he was making the film. And you can truly feel that emanate from Luca; the way the film captures the innocent gaze a child casts onto its world, the nostalgia invoked by a homely summer setting, and the conflict of having to conquer one’s fears. There’s an undeniable timelessness in Miyazaki‘s and Studio Ghibli’s work and Luca bats for the same feeling by painting the perfect time with you and your childhood friends.  There’s poignancy in simplicity and the film has that in earnest.

Luca, the titular lead, is voiced by Jacob Tremblay and he’s a young sea monster who spends his days shepherding fish (fisherding?) on his family’s underwater farm while daydreaming of a more exciting life. He lives with his overbearing mother, absent-minded father, and carefree grandma. One day, his curiosity is piqued by life outside the ocean. Problem is, the surface world either means trouble or death for their kind because of fishermen hunting for sea monsters. As such, Luca spends his days cooped up under the stern rule of his mother.

This all changes when he meets a troublemaker named Alberto, voiced by Shazam star Jack Dylan Grazer, who spends his days scavenging human belongings in the surface world (sea monsters, by the way, turn into humans outside of water). The two bond over a shared dream of one day owning a Vespa, which they believe to be the most beautiful invention known to man. Alberto, being an unruly kid, forces Luca to step outside of his comfort zone as they partake in shenanigans on a nearby remote island. This, of course, doesn’t sit well with Luca’s mom.

Watch Pixar's New Official Luca Trailer Deliver A Stunning Coming of Age story - The Illuminerdi

From there on out, the story’s fabric unravels as a slice-of-life vignette across an Italian riviera. It takes place in a poor fishing village called Porto Rosso (an obvious reference to Porco Rosso). Luca and Alberto find themselves living their best days, learning the ropes of the surface world while keeping their monstrous side a secret. There, they meet a friend in Giulia, who helps them realize their dream of owning a Vespa by signing up for the local triathlon. This may all seem not exciting compared to Pixar films that have sprawling adventures into fantastical worlds but it’s in these unadorned, reserved vignettes of life where much of the film’s heart truly beats.

Stand by Me was a movie that came to mind several times while watching Luca. Not because it had a bunch of kids cursing and smoking as they hiked to see a dead body, but for how it manages to capture the kinds of friendships a lot of people have during their youth. Alberto is the Chris Chambers here; a misfit that’s dismissive, reckless, protective, but deeply woeful while Luca, of course, is Gordie Lachance; wide-eyed, naive, and full of innocence. Their friendship feels tenuous at times, strained by the surface world they dream of living in but in spite of that, there’s a real undercurrent of love. And like in the Rob Reiner classic, the characters are inevitably faced with the hard choice of taking the first steps into maturity. “Silenzio, Bruno,” a mantra about conquering your fears is one you’ll often hear in the film and it’s one that ultimately crescendos into an absolutely beautiful finale that made my eyes bawl out.

Tremblay and Grazer are phenomenal in this. They truly feel like the real-life counterparts of their characters. This was a movie that was wholly produced during COVID meaning the stars weren’t able to record in the same room as they normally would in these films. But their performances nonetheless feel so authentic and true. I don’t know if Grazer and Tremblay are good friends in real life but this movie convinces you they are. Grazer is fantastic in this and really carries that brazen vulnerability that makes Alberto such a resonant character. You can’t stand him at one point but then totally shed a tear for him later on.

The supporting characters are all so fun to watch too. Maya Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan voice the wacky sea monster parents of Luca. While they obviously play a critical emotional role in Luca’s journey, they really bring all of the laughs for a chunk of the film. Certain residents of Porto Rosso are also of note, specifically Giulia’s father Massimo and his cat Machiavelli, who feel like the most Ghibli-esque characters in the film. Even the film’s de facto bad guy/bully Ercole, while one-note at times, is entertaining to watch.

VIDEO: New Trailer for Pixar's "Luca", Coming to Disney+ June 18 - WDW News Today

And then you have the obviously gorgeous visuals by the Pixar team. Their version of the Italian Riviera is breathtaking, albeit exaggerated to feel more like an impressionistic painting. Knowing Casarosa’s admiration for Miyazaki, I can’t help but imagine how even more spectacular this film would be as a hand-drawn film. Nonetheless, the film stands as a pure treat for the eyes and ears with its vibrant vistas and Dan Romer’s vintage-inspired Italian score.

With its big Studio Ghibli energy and old-fashioned tale of friendship and overcoming fears, Luca is a fresh kind of Pixar movie in and of itself. It may not have the existential ambition of Soul nor the superhero fun offered by the Incredibles but it has a heart unlike any other and that makes for the perfect feel-good movie to watch these days.
