  • Review: ‘Demon Slayer: Mugen Train’

    Review: ‘Demon Slayer: Mugen Train’

    Guest review by Tucker Watkins

I have a long complicated relationship with Demon Slayer. Watched it, stopped, started again, stopped, and then finally finished it. I would go months at a time between episodes. But in the end, in that final stretch of the show — I found my love for it. And ever since then, I’ve been counting down the days until we got a continuation, and that time finally came last weekend. I’ve now seen Mugen Train twice, once in sub and dub, and I’ve come to a conclusion. It’s good.

Anime films where they condense entire arcs into 2 hours have a spotty history, to say the least. Akira (one of the first anime films to be popularized in the US) condensed an entire manga series into a single 2-hour film. While historically relevant, it struggled with pacing. The same issue is present here, just in a different way. There are two very distinct sections of the movie: Mugen Train and Upper Three. The problem occurred when they made the decision to focus on the Mugen Train for the majority of the runtime. But, they didn’t want to leave out the Upper Three story, so the end feels disjointed. Consequently, I left the theatre exhausted. You feel like the movie is winding down, and then another character shows up out of nowhere and you have to get back in the zone for the next part of the movie. Oddly enough, the two halves are so different and contrasted to one another that it almost worked. If they’d managed to make the two halves feel more connected, this movie could’ve been fantastic. However, the two halves work separately on their own. The first half is a beautiful, in-depth look at the spirit of our characters. The second half works almost like an action-filled pallet cleanser, but that’d be selling it short. It’s a beautiful 1v1 fight, where we observe the strength of these two incredibly powerful beings and understand the persistence of the human spirit. Both halves are fantastic, I just feel like they didn’t do the proper work to make them feel cohesive to form a whole movie.

While the core 3 (or 4?) main characters are present and accounted for, there are pretty clearly 2 main characters that this movie decided to focus on: Tanjiro and Rengoku, the newly introduced Fire Hashira. Tanjiro, being the true main character, gets the brunt of the focus and characterization, but I’d be lying if I said they didn’t do a fantastic job with Rengoku. Having only been introduced for a couple of episodes, and having little to no lines or screen time in his previous appearances, Rengoku shines brighter than anyone else here. Through the first half of the movie, our characters are put into dreams that are supposed to appeal to their deepest desires. It’s an incredibly useful tool for us to get a look inside these characters and where they lie in our story.

While Zenitsu and Inosuke are thrown to the side and given humor-filled vignettes, the real heart of these sequences are Rengoku and Tanjiro. We are presented an interesting look at where Tanjiro is in his journey, realizing that he’s still living in the past and striving to be with his family again, as impossible as that may be. We’re also finally given a look at what drives Rengoku, and we get the touching realization that what makes Rengoku happy is the happiness and success of his little brother. It’s an incredibly beautiful moment, and it comes back to haunt us in the end when Rengoku sacrifices his life to prevent the Upper Three Demon from harming Tanjiro. Rengoku will never get to see his brother follow through on his dreams, and now it’s up to Tanjiro to make Rengoku proud. It’s fantastic.

The real star of any Demon Slayer movie or show is the animation. Somehow, they manage to make all of the fight scenes so dynamic, they love playing with the camera (or the lack of), it’s absolutely incredible. By no means am I an anime connoisseur, but this is far and away one of the best-looking animated movies ever. The choice to use bright colors contrasting against the overly realistic setting. The beautiful blues of the water, the striking yellows of lightning, the fiery red — it’s fantastic. This movie practically works on its own as a masterclass in “How To Properly Blend 2D and 3D animation.” The entire thing is a feast for the eyes, but that’s nothing new for fans of Demon Slayer anime.

To sum up all my thoughts — watch it. For Demon Slayer fans, it’s a must, especially if you intend to catch the new season. For casual movie fans, this is one of the most visually interesting and beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. Perhaps you might be lost on a few things, but if anything, it’ll just make you want to watch the anime. This movie isn’t without its issues, but I feel the pros out weigh the cons. Get vaccinated, wear a mask, go to the movies, and see Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba The Movie: Mugen Train.

‘Ms. Marvel’: Set Photos Reveal First Look at Iman Vellani in Full Costume

We’ve been waiting a long time for our first look at Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel in full-costume. In one of the first set photos, we got her in a Halloween costume inspired by Captain Marvel. Well, the set photos have finally found their way online, as Just Jared has shared our first official look at the actress in full Ms. Marvel gear on the set of the Disney+ show.

As we aren’t allowed to share these images, you can check out the images directly on Just Jared.

It is our best look yet at the iconic costume and it also seems to strongly match the drawings from one of the directors. Yet, there is one detail that is quite different. She isn’t wearing a purple scarf but the red one we know from her comic. perhaps this takes place after she meets Red Dagger and receives it from him.

Overall, the costume looks quite a bit more modern. So, we might see a homemade one at one point in the series. Even in the Marvel’s Avengers game, her first costume design was based on a burkini. So, it might develop as she grows into her powers. We don’t know yet how they will portray her Embiggen abilities and if they might explain how her costume doesn’t rip when she grows in size. We cannot wait until we get more footage, as we got a brief glimpse at the series in a small sizzle reel during Disney’s Investors Day.

  • Latest ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Dev Stream Revealed Red Room Takeover Start Date and Black Widow’s MCU Skin

Latest ‘Marvel’s Avengers’ Dev Stream Revealed Red Room Takeover Start Date and Black Widow’s MCU Skin

Marvel’s Avengers has gone through quite the week, as various of their MCU skins have leaked online. We also had our first event with the Tachyon Anomalies, so we’ve been anxiously awaiting some information on the upcoming Red Room Takeover. Luckily, we got an official look and some more details in the latest developer stream by Crystal Dynamics.

    • Of course, we got some details on the development of some bugs. Priority Mission rewards have been fixed and the next patch will fix the missing Black Widow Outrider glasses. The Kate Bishop nameplate has also been replaced.
    • It looks like we are getting the Red Room early, as it will consist of two parts. The first one will kick off next week on May 6th and is titled Sky Protocols. The second part will release later in May but no date has been given. It will include brand new mission chains, animated nameplates, and Black Widow will be a recommended character. The actual HARM room takeover will be n the second part.
    • We will get a new set of Red Room-inspired outfits for all our heroes.  They also revealed Black Widow’s MCU skin officially that’ll be adapted from Avengers: Endgame. It’ll be made available next week alongside the Red Room’s first part.

    • Crystal Dynamics has hinted that further details on post-Level 50 progressions will follow in the upcoming weeks. They will give us insight even before they finish their development on it, and they might even tease some new skins potentially.
    • Omega-Level Threats continue to be in good shape. They are working on balancing and some minor bugs on the Labs OLT. They’ve teased some curious additions to the bosses that may add some new complexity in the future.
    • Patrol Mode might get a spotlight in the future, where they also want to talk bout future additions. So, we can expect them to grow as time goes on.

The MCU skin certainly looks like it got plucked directly out of the film. I am surprised that the next event is happening so soon after the last one ended. We’ve seen a lot of new additions, and active communication has been evolving with each stream. They are offering further details and are actively offering some insight into ongoing developments. Patrol Mode especially has been highlighted quite a bit. So, it could be a positive sign for it to release earlier than initially expected.

  • ‘Secret Invasion’ Eyeing ‘Damnation’s Killian Scott in Undisclosed Role

‘Secret Invasion’ Eyeing ‘Damnation’s Killian Scott in Undisclosed Role

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe expands, it continues to attract new talent to the franchise. According to Deadline, actor Killian Scott is currently in negotiations to join the upcoming Disney+ show Secret Invasion. He joins the ranks of Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, who are reprising their roles as Nick Fury and Talos respectively. They will be joined by other newcomers, Kingsley Ben-Adir, who is rumored to play an antagonist, Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke, and The Crown actress Olivia Coleman. Killian Scott‘s role is being kept under wraps.

The upcoming Marvel Studios series’ plot is still shrouded in mystery. However, we can assume that the show will be an adaptation of the comic book event of the same name. In it, the Skrulls slowly infiltrated Earth and replaced several important individuals. They took over parts of the government and even our favorite heroes. As a result, they were pitted against each other in a thrilling event that questioned everyone’s identity. Anyone could’ve been a Skrull.

It is unknown if Marvel Studios plans to use any of its vast arsenal of heroes (or even villains) in the series, but as this stellar cast continues to grow and expand, we certainly can’t wait to see what Marvel has up their sleeves for the series. There is also the question of it might tie into the upcoming Captain Marvel 2, which first introduced the world to the alien species. We might even see the Kree make an appearance of some kind, who are no strangers to infiltrating worlds. Here’s hoping we get more info once production starts.

  • First ‘The Flash’ Set Photos Reveal ‘Batman 1989’s Wayne Manor

First ‘The Flash’ Set Photos Reveal ‘Batman 1989’s Wayne Manor

After years of delays and rewrites, production on The Flash has finally begun. It has lost quite a few directors and writers along the way. It wasn’t until the film finally found its footing with writer Christina Hodson and director Andy Muschietti that it would finally get the ball rolling. It is set to feature the return of Ezra Miller‘s Barry Allen, as he begins to further understand his abilities and connection to the speed force. This newfound understanding would lead to the hero unraveling the multiverse. On the journey, the Flash is set to team up with one of the most iconic characters in comic book film history, Michael Keaton’s Batman. Luckily, the first set of photos have found their way online by @DCverso1 revealing an iconic manor.

These set photos reveal the iconic Wayne Manor from the 1989 film. It seems they are once again filming at the Knebworth House in Hertfordshire. It is uncertain if this is purely for an exterior shot, but Warner Bros.’s presence is certainly eye-catching. The film is currently set to release in November of 2022. We’ve known for a while that Michael Keaton would make a return in the titular role for quite some time. Ben Affleck will also make his return in the upcoming film after reshooting some sequences for HBO Max’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It’ll be interesting to see if we get to revisit any other familiar Batman locations, such as Batman Begins‘ Wollaton Hall in Nottingham as Barry travels through the multiverse.

  • ‘Falcon and Winter Soldier’ Finale Almost Included Spider-Man At One Point

‘Falcon and Winter Soldier’ Finale Almost Included Spider-Man At One Point

In an ever-expanding franchise like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it almost seems like the possibilities are endless. You have such a long list of characters to choose from to explore the vast corners of the universe. Well, it seems that the Falcon and Winter Soldier team were just as ambitious when they were mapping out the story. At some point, they originally wanted to include Peter Parker in the season finale, as it took place in New York City. Well, it seems that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was the one to shoot down that idea. Malcolm Spellman revealed in an interview with Inverse:

Then Kevin Feige tells you, “No. Stop it.” Listen, when you first show up to these projects, in your mind you think you’re gonna get to use everybody in the MCU. But Marvel always asks, “Does this person belong in this story? You cannot just geek out and put all of our characters in your project because you like them. They have to occur organically.” So Spider-Man did not make it.

The inclusion of Spider-Man would’ve made sense with it being his home turf, but the approach says a lot about how Marvel Studios approaches their characters. Instead of forcing every hero to show up in every project, they need to fit the story organically rather than getting forced in. Falcon and Winter Soldier already included Zemo, Sharon, and the Dora Milaje. At one point, it could take away from Sam and Bucky’s story. It is interesting to note that Feige didn’t exclude the fact that Tom Holland‘s Peter could appear in the Disney+ show, which opens up a lot of other questions if you consider the recent dealings between Disney and Sony. We’ll see if more is to come to this aspect of the franchise. Luckily for Sam, he won’t be able to steal the shield again.

  • Finn Wittrock Cast as Guy Gardner in HBO Max’s ‘Green Lantern’

Finn Wittrock Cast as Guy Gardner in HBO Max’s ‘Green Lantern’

For a while now we’ve known that the upcoming Green Lantern series on HBO Max would be following multiple generations. Each generation would follow different Lanterns such as Alan Scott, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, and even Guy Gardner. Fans have been anticipating some official word on when the series may begin casting or even begin filming and now, according to a trade report, we finally have some movement.

Deadline is reporting that American Horror Story star Finn Wittrock has been cast as narcissistic Lantern, Guy Gardner. Wittrock’s Gardner is described as a “Hulking mass of masculinity and an embodiment of 1980’s hyper patriotism but also likable. The report confirms that the series will begin in 1941 where we’ll meet Alan Scott, described as a “secretly gay FBI agent”. The series will then jump to 1984, where we’ll meet Gardner alongside a brand new character, Bree Jarta.

Green Lantern currently has no set release date but is set to stream exclusively on HBO Max. The series was written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Seth Grahame-Smith. Guggenheim and Smith will serve as executive producers on the project alongside Geoff Johns, Sarah Schecter, David Madden, and David Katzenberg.
