  • First Look at Kaci Walfall as ‘Naomi’

First Look at Kaci Walfall as ‘Naomi’

Late last year it was announced that the CW had green-lit a new series centered around the fairly new DC Comics character Naomi. Alongside its announcement was the news that Ava Duvernay was behind the new super series and that it would be produced by her Array Production company. From there, the series moved fairly quickly with its casting process, adding actress Kaci Walfall as the titular character of Naomi.

Duvernay has been quite active on Instagram lately documenting production on the pilot episode of the series, and took the time to offer a BTS as Walfall as Naomi. For those not familiar with the character, she made her comics debut in 2019’s Naomi by Brian Michael Bendis. She hails from an alternate earth, sent by her parents to save her from a villain known as Zumbado. She discovers she harbors powerful energy abilities and sets out to uncover the truth about where she’s really from and just how powerful she really is.

Naomi will be written by Ava Duvernay and Jill Blankenship with both also serving as executive producers on the series. For those looking to learn more about Naomi, some proper reading material would include Naomi #1-6, Young Justice #10-20, and the current run on Justice League by Brian Michael Bendis.

  • Leaked ‘What If’ Promo Teases the Guardians of the Multiverse

Leaked ‘What If’ Promo Teases the Guardians of the Multiverse

The trend continues that toys and merchandise reveal some first looks at upcoming Marvel Studios projects. Twitter user @AnneComics found a rather curious piece at a trip to the mall that features the Guardians of the Multiverse. In it, we can clearly see characters that were already confirmed for the upcoming What If series heading to Disney+. T’Challa as Star-Lord, a sinister-looking Doctor Strange, and Captain Britain are all present. Interestingly, this is already readily available as the marketing for the series hasn’t started yet. So, they probably weren’t supposed to release that just yet and it found its way online. The reason it is strange is that it also offers a look at other characters that might get the spotlight in various episodes, such as Killmonger, Gamora, Thor, and Black Widow. It also presents us with our first clear look at Uatu the Watcher.

The promotional artwork is already available on the FYE shopping site. So, here is a higher solution look at it:

Now, the big question on our minds is if the Guardians of the Multiverse may end up as an actual team. I doubt it, as it could be a simple slogan used for the advertising to pull the show’s anthology set-up together. It could be a fun concept for the various alternative realities to merge at the end of the season and battle a common foe, which would add a new connective tissue between these shows. It’ll be interesting to see if these characters are also highlighted once the official push for the series begins, which will most likely start airing after Loki ends its run. For now, we can only wait in anticipation to see more of that amazing animation once the next trailer is released.

  • New ‘Andor’ Set Photos Tease Familiar Imperials

New ‘Andor’ Set Photos Tease Familiar Imperials

It has already been four months since we got the official reveal that the Rogue One spin-off would be titled Andor. It is one of many Disney+ series that will continue to expand the Star Wars franchise in new and interesting ways. The pandemic has left its scars on the spin-off, as it forced Tony Gilroy to leave the franchise’s reigns to Black Mirror‘s Toby Haynes. Directors Ben Caron and Susanna White would join the production a few months ago before it officially entered production. Now, we finally also get a few glimpses at the set through @OutlawNoah, which already offers a look at some familiar Imperial outfits.

As he points out, the set design does have a vibe that is similar to Canto Bight. The location was a coastal city on the desert planet Cantonica, which Finn and Rose visited during the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If you consider the time difference between the events of this series and the sequel trilogy, it might be a different location that was also quite elaborate.

It’s interesting that the Imperial Guards, who are wearing similar uniforms to Ben Mendelsohn‘s Orson Krennic. As the series is a prequel to Rogue One, there is a chance he might make an appearance in some form or another. We still know very little about the series, which may act as a standalone project or even consist of multiple seasons that build up to the events that would start a new hope in the galaxy far far away.

  • ‘Ms. Marvel’: Alyy Khan Joining Thailand Production of Disney+ Series

‘Ms. Marvel’: Alyy Khan Joining Thailand Production of Disney+ Series

Ms. Marvel has been adding to its cast as it continues production in Thailand. Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first Muslim-American superhero is expanding the franchise in new and interesting ways. We just covered the rumor that Pakistani veteran actress Samina Ahmed joining the cast, as it was revealed that she was filming a Hollywood production in Thailand by her husband. It looks like one more actor was revealed to be joining the production, as in an interview with Film Inquiry, A Mighty Heart star, Alyy Khan, revealed he is joining a Marvel production.

A couple of interesting things. I’m hoping to be traveling to do the Marvel gig soon. Other than that The Serpent is still on air, so do try and watch and enjoy that.

He later goes on to confirm that it is indeed Ms. Marvel and even talks briefly about the quarantine before he can join the production.

Yes, it should be fun. [chuckles] I was keen to be a part of that, so let’s see what happens. Travelling to Thailand and big quarantine periods, the world is still a bit of a mess right now but fingers crossed we can move around soon

The Pakistani actor has quite an extensive filmography that includes productions with Hollywood, Bollywood, and Lollywood. He has recently appeared in Bassam Tariq‘s Mogul Mowgli alongside Riz Ahmed. He also has a starring role in BBC’s serial killer biopic The Serpent. It’ll be interesting to see what role he’ll have n the upcoming Marvel Disney+ series.

  • ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’: John Walker Comes Undone

‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’: John Walker Comes Undone

In the second episode of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Lemar Hoskins chats with John Walker. They discuss the weight of taking on the mantle of Captain America. It is the first time we get a feeling of the pressure on Walker’s shoulders. It is a brief look into his humanity before he wears the legacy left behind by Steve Rogers. The most poignant line spoken was when Lemar pointed out his war buddy:

You can’t just punch your way out of problems anymore, you know?

How different that line hits now. As the whole world is watching, John forgets Lemar’s lesson in a blind rage. He’s caught on camera brutally killing a member of the Flag-Smashers. John Walker was trying so hard to be like Steve Rogers that he ended up becoming something else entirely.

Who are John Walker, Falcon and the new Captain America from the Winter Soldier you already hate? | The Bharat Express News

When we think about who Steve Rogers is and why he got idolized so much, we’re always presented with his unwavering penchant to do the right thing. He’s willing to give up his life to save Bucky from Hydra. It’s the willingness to make sure not only Hydra but S.H.I.E.L.D. all goes down. It never mattered about how he was perceived or the narrative. As Dr. Erskine points out in Captain America: The First Avenger, there was an important reason why he got the serum, to begin with:

Bad becomes worse. This is why you were chosen. Because a strong man, who has known power all his life, will lose respect for that power. But a weak man knows the value of strength and knows compassion.

Walker is a classic strong man who has known power all his life. MIT even studied his body. So, of course, the government saw him as the perfect replacement for Steve Rogers. It is that perception that John not only feeds into but allows to consume him. It’s the way his insecurities come into play when Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes don’t want to work with him. You feel the need to prove something to himself and the world that Steve never exhibited.

Is Zemo God Or Bad In The Falcon And The Winter Soldier?

Absolute power corrupts absolutely is the saying, and John Walker taking the serum is the culmination of letting perception be his guide. The embarrassment of being soundly defeated by the Dora Milaje was the point that his inner demons took over. It echoed the words spoken by Zemo in a conversation with Sam, as they discussed if he would ever take the serum if he had the choice.

The desire to become a superhuman cannot be separated from supremacist ideals. Anyone with that serum is inherently on that path.

In a way, one could downplay the events. John was taking vengeance for the death of his best friend. Yet, he was headed down this road long before. It was just an accelerant. His thirst for power, which is unchecked, was always leading him down this path. The idea that Walker decided to escalate a situation that Sam was trying to deescalate. It is something that Steve Rogers would never do. Captain America: Civil War echoes the importance of these events. In a fight for his life, Steve could’ve killed Tony Stark, who was in a rage after finding out Bucky was behind his parent’s death. Steve had gotten the better of the fight and finished Tony by slamming the shield into his arc reactor. However, he never went through with it. John was not in the same scenario, but there was a choice. His anger overtook him as he killed Nico.

How Powerful John Walker Is As Captain America With The Serum

The episode ends with John holding a bloody shield after he showed the world his true colors. Lemar prophetically says when John asks about taking the serum. John asks the questions that Steve always had the answer to. Captain America was never about the shield but the person behind it. John Walker wanted to be Steve Rogers so desperately that he becomes something darker and uncompromising. His actions have left their mark on the symbol that once had the weight of the world on it.

  • Sony PlayStation’s Future at a Crossroads as Japan and the West Struggle for Control

Sony PlayStation’s Future at a Crossroads as Japan and the West Struggle for Control

Just recently, we covered a story regarding internal strife over at Sony PlayStation. Bloomberg had revealed how the focus on blockbuster games created a problematic environment within the company. It looks like it has also been splashing over on their relationship with the Eastern market, as a Reddit-verified AMA has led to some rather curious internal developments. The anonymous employee revealed that the relocation of their headquarter was just the beginning of a power struggle from the West that has become rather one-sided at this point. He states the following:

PlayStation is a historically Japanese brand. In the time since PlayStation debuted, America has grown to be the largest video game market. There’s been a lot of internal competition for the ‘control’ of the PlayStation brand and over the past several years you can clearly see where America has been winning. Relocation of HQ, shutdown of most of Japan Studios, and the DualSense’s X default confirm (as a final ‘f*** you’) are some of the notable examples off the top of my head.

We’ve seen the first development when they shut down the Japanese developers, who worked on smaller titles like Gravity Rush. Japan Studio has a long history with Sony, and most of its development staff were let go. Asobi Team did become a new home for some developers but is claimed to be a move due to the production studios’ lack of profitability. However, the 1993-founded studio has quite an extensive history with the brand and represented their Eastern market. They even assisted the development of Days Gone and the PlayStation 5 launch title, Demon’s Souls. It might be something to keep a close eye on as the company continues to face PlayStation 5 delivery issues and Xbox’s growing competition through their Gamepass options.

  • RUMOR: Pakistani Veteran Actress Samina Ahmed May Have Joined ‘Ms. Marvel’

RUMOR: Pakistani Veteran Actress Samina Ahmed May Have Joined ‘Ms. Marvel’

A few days ago, The Times of India and India Today reported that Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar had joined a Marvel project. He was filming the project in Bangkok, Thailand, which gave credence to it likely being Ms. Marvel. The Disney+ series has been continuing their production there as Red Dagger actor, Aramis Knight, was spotted a month ago. It looks like one more Eastern star will join the production.

Now, the Tribute has learned that the Waris actress Samina Ahmed (who is spelled as Ahmad in IMDb but covered as Ahmed in other outlets and on the Twitter handle @saminatv) is also making her Hollywood debut. They noticed a posting on Instagram where someone inquired where the actress was in a post by her husband, Manzar Sehbai. He revealed that she is shooting a Hollywood production in Thailand. She will most likely return by May 6th. It seems likely once you connect the dots that she is most likely also going to appear in the upcoming Ms. Marvel production.

Of course, there is no confirmation that the actress joined this specific production, as there is no word of it involving Marvel Studios. It just seems like an interesting coincidence that she is filming in Thailand in a Hollywood production. It seems unlikely that anything else is actively filming there for now. It’ll be interesting to see how the current shoots will also fit into the story that will be told in Ms. Marvel, which is still slated to release later this year.

  • ‘Hawkeye’: Jeremy Renner Teases Ronin’s Return

‘Hawkeye’: Jeremy Renner Teases Ronin’s Return

It looks like Jeremy Renner isn’t holding back on sharing his enthusiasm from the Hawkeye set, as he just posted a rather revealing photo on Instagram. In his latest Instagram story post, he gave us a close-up shot from his Ronin costume with the words “Back when…” to tease the return of Clint Barton’s other alter-ego. We were introduced to the mantle in Avengers: Endgame, where it got a brief but memorable introduction. We don’t know if this is a new image for the series, or Renner is simply reusing an image from the film’s production. It is an Instagram story with limited availability that would hint at this being a shot he made during the Disney+ series’ production.

It’ll be interesting to see how the character of Ronin will fit into the story. There is a good chance we will explore Clint’s past when he took on the mantle, which could tie into why Echo is making an appearance in the series. In the comics, she also held the mantle. So, they could be trying to use that connection to introduce the character into this storyline that seems largely inspired by Matt Fraction‘s My Life as a Weapon.

Ronin adds a lot to Hawkeye’s character, as he went off a deep end that Kate Bishop might not be aware of. There’s a lot of opportunities to build up distrust between the two, as they face down the tracksuit mafia. The series is slated to release sometime this year. Hopefully, the first teaser trailer for the Disney+ series might give us a first glimpse at how the puzzle pieces will fall together.

  • ‘MOON KNIGHT’ Leads Spotted in Budapest as Production Ramps Up

‘MOON KNIGHT’ Leads Spotted in Budapest as Production Ramps Up

The two biggest names attached to Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ exclusive Moon Knight series have, as predicted, been spotted in Budapest, Hungary, as the show moves its production schedule along. A fan bumped into Oscar Isaac, playing the show’s titular character, and Ethan Hawke, whose role hasn’t yet been disclosed, while biking through a city park. He caught both actors in good spirits as the photo that was taken clearly shows.

This marks Marvel Studios’ return to the Hungarian capital after Black Widow also shot there for a few weeks back in 2019. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier also spent a big amount of time shooting in nearby Prague in the Czech Republic (posing as Riga, Latvia), as eastern Europe locations have increasingly managed to make their way into the MCU. It’s a good sign that the film production company is seeking new ways to expand their franchise outside of their usual Atlanta shooting location.

Moon Knight, which still doesn’t have an official release date, will probably premiere in 2022. It will take viewers inside the complicated mind of Marc Spector (Isaac), a former marine, as he deals with dissociative identity disorder (or does he?). The show will dive into Egyptian mythology, as Egyptian moon god Khonshu saves Spector after an unsuccessful mission in northern Africa, giving him a new lease on life. It is uncertain what role Ethan Hawke has, but we do know that he will be playing the main antagonist in the story. The Disney+ series may potentially become of one of Marvel Studios’ darkest and we cannot wait for it to release.

  • How ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Opened Darker Avenues for MCU’s Legacy Characters

How ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Opened Darker Avenues for MCU’s Legacy Characters

The following article will include spoilers for the latest episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Only continue at your own risk if you haven’t seen it yet.

Marvel Studios has made an essential move with the latest episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier. At one point, it was going to be the first Disney+ show based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe to release. As fate wanted it, WandaVision took over that position and gave us a very experimental series exploring grief through unconventional ways. It opened up the question of what Sam and Bucky’s story might add to expand the ever-expanding world. The latest episode may have set a new potential within the universe that could echo throughout other shows and films. We were introduced to the first legacy character to go off the deep end.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Why John Walker's Dark Turn Was Inevitable - IGN

The MCU is no stranger to the concept of legacy characters. Hank Pym passed on the mantle of Ant-Man to Scott Lang to ensure his research wouldn’t fall into the wrong hands. Lang was a thief, but he was a good person at heart. The entire point of Spider-Man: Far From Home was for Spider-Man to escape the legacy that the world was trying to force upon him. In a way, he was his protégé. It made sense that he could take on the mantle, but he was Spider-Man, not Iron Man. Avengers: Endgame was the first official passing of a torch when Steve gave Sam his shield.

Yet, just like Peter, Sam didn’t want the legacy. His unwillingness led to the mantle landing in the hands of John Walker. In reality, it landed in the hands of the government. It was a new legacy getting continued without any involvement of the old. John Walker didn’t know or interact with Steve. There is a reason he wanted Sam to join his side. He’s not carrying the legacy of the person. In his hands is only the symbol. They don’t have much say in their carrier. They can easily become a means to an end. Yet, they also have weight. Without the guidance of those that came before, it can easily pull one down. It was very evident that the title of Captain America did that.

BLACK WIDOW Director Confirms the Film Will "Hand The Baton" to Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova — GeekTyrant

The echoes of this misdeed will besmirch the shield and what it stands for. Yet, it also sets a precedent that the heroes’ iconic titles aren’t safe. Kate Bishop’s upcoming role in Hawkeye does not exclude the possibility of her facing some demons along the way. It won’t be as easy as Scott stealing the suit and getting welcomed to take on the role long-term. It’ll be a harrowing journey for some. It also opens up the possibility that not every legacy character will carry on the mantle in a positive light. We’ve been theorizing that Black Widow would see Florence Pugh‘s Yelena Belova take on Natasha’s title. Yet, it doesn’t mean she will become an Avenger. She may have a darker road ahead of her than we might expect at first. Her paths might even cross with this newly formed agent of the United States.
