Camrus Johnson Suits Up as Batwing in New ‘Batwoman’ Set Photos

Throughout Batman’s long-running history in comics, there’s always been a constant theme of family. Since the introduction of Robin, his family has grown exponentially with the inclusions of characters like Batgirl, Huntress, and Batwoman. CW’s adaptation of Batwoman has embraced this concept and continued to expand the series’ family since the first season. After Ruby Rose‘s departure, Javicia Leslie took over the role through the character of Ryan Wilder, who previously made her comic debut in Batgirl #50. It looks like they plan on adding more to this universe’s bat family. They recently introduced the character of Stephanie Brown, and it looks like one original member finally gets to don a cape of his own.

Since season one, Camrus Johnson has acted as Batwoman’s man in the chair. He was acting behind the scenes as Batwoman’s Oracle and even took a few pages out of his father’s book by upgrading her gear. It looks like his time in the chair is finally over as brand new set photos have found their way online revealing the actor in a Batwing costume.

For those unfamiliar with the character, he is the son of Lucius Fox. In the comics, he is currently the second person to hold the mantle of Batwing. Lucas made his debut with the mantle in 2013’s Batwing #19 through Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray‘s work. He has been a recurring character in Gotham since his debut. He was also a master of mixed martial arts and skilled detective who wears a suit equipped with a powerful arsenal of weapons and gadgets, all while being able to fly. It is great they are taking a page out of the comics and giving Johnson a chance to don the suit in live-action. It’ll be interesting to see how they introduce it and if he might be keeping it a secret from the rest of the group.

  • ‘Batwoman’: First Look at Peter Outerbridge as Black Mask

‘Batwoman’: First Look at Peter Outerbridge as Black Mask

Batwoman has been dropping some wild casting news lately. They recently dropped a bombshell with Krypton’s Wallis Day replacing Ruby Rose as the new Kate Kane. Many have grown quite fond of the newest Batwoman, Ryan Wilder, who is played by Javicia Leslie. She takes on the rising crime wave in Gotham City after Kane went missing following the events of the last season. Even before the series began, we have heard that the iconic Batman villain Black Mask would be making an appearance. He would take on a larger role throughout the season, but there has been radio silence since. Luckily, Deadline has revealed that Peter Outerbridge is taking on the role with our first official look at him in the iconic mask.

Outerbridge is set to play CW’s incarnation of the sadistic Roman Sionis. Sionis is described as a “pragmatic and charismatic CEO,” who plays the white night against the corruption within Gotham City. Yet, when he puts on the mask, he becomes an evil mastermind with a burning hate for the Crows and the vigilantes that prowl the streets. He will do anything to get revenge. We do not know who has brought upon his fury. So, the answer to that question will most likely come with his debut in the upcoming ninth episode.

Batwoman is currently airing its second season on the CW and stars Javicia Leslie, Meagan Tandy, Rachel Skarsten, Camrus Johnson, and Nichole Kang.

  • ‘BATWOMAN’ Recasts Kate Kane With Wallis Day

‘BATWOMAN’ Recasts Kate Kane With Wallis Day

Kate Kane is coming back to The CW’s Batwoman, but she won’t look the same as when we last saw her. Deadline has confirmed that actress Wallis Day will replace Ruby Rose as the character who first donned the Batwoman cowl. The move comes less than a year after Roseabruptly quit the series over unknown grievances. Her character was subsequently written off of the Bat-show, with Kane being said to have disappeared in a mysterious plane crash. The second season debuted with Javicia Leslie assuming the title role as a brand new Batwoman named Ryan Wilder, the first black woman to take the mantle. While the latter half of the second season has now committed to answering the question of Kane’s whereabouts, it is being stressed that Leslie will remain the show’s one and only Batwoman.

Batwoman' Casts Wallis Day to Take Over Ruby Rose's Role | Hollywood Reporter

Day‘s take on Kate will be an altered version of the character. A big reveal on the latest episode of the series revealed Kane to be alive but nearly unrecognizable, with her face wrapped in bandages. It’s still unclear what this means for the former vigilante heroine going forward, but fans can bet they won’t be seeing exactly the same character they met in the series’ pilot. Luckily for Day, she is already familiar with the wide world of DC television. The British thespian is perhaps best known for her starring role in Scyfy’s Krypton, based on the origins of Superman’s biological family. She has also made appearances in The Royals and Casanova, and will star in Antoine Fuqua‘s next feature film, Infinite.

  • A New Batwoman, A New Story

A New Batwoman, A New Story

“Black, male, foster kid, juvie. In case you’re wondering why GCPD isn’t looking for him, those five words.”

Those are Ryan Wilder’s words to Mary Hamilton in the fourth episode of Batwoman’s second season on the CW. Batwoman, still early in its inception, already has had to deal with a major transition. Javicia Leslie, who plays the caped superheroine replaced Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane after Season 1. There’s always a challenge when it comes to changing the lead specifically so early in television. It also requires a redirect in story. Season 1 focused primarily on Kate’s rivalry with the show’s villain, her sister Alice. Season 2 feels like an entirely different show, and it’s been for the better.

Often, representation for black people on network television has been about getting the faces seen but not heard. A pleasant surprise on this season of Batwoman has been the nature of the stories being told. They represent the real-life issues that not only black people face, but mainly black women as Ryan’s character is a homeless ex-con. Nothing quite articulates the experience like an exchange in episode 1 between Ryan and her parole officer. Officer Stevens tells Ryan, “They are your choices, Ryan. You have the power to turn this around.” Ryan responds in kind, “You want to know why I haven’t paid my fines? Because I can’t find a job. Because I don’t have a home. Because no landlord wants to rent to an ex-con who’s post-release. You see how this works? No one cares that the dope wasn’t mine or that the Crows were dirty or that I’m actually a decent human. I am a file in your cabinet. That is not having power. That is the very definition of powerless.

Lines like those are so important in storytelling. We are reminded every day in society that it’s all about the bottom line. Your circumstances don’t matter to the powers that be, nor does context. This is Ryan’s reality in trying to find a job. Leslie and the writers deserve a lot of credit for the nuance in their storytelling. Ryan Wilder is not only trying to make sense of her life after prison but also trying to fill the shoes of Gotham’s missing hero.

That suit. It’s bigger than me. It’s one thing to put it on and it’s another thing to wear it.” That line is symbolism for not only what Ryan carries but exemplifies the constant juggling act of expectations versus reality that is the life of a black woman.

In Batwoman’s latest installment nothing hits home more as she finds the boy she was looking for. Jacob Kane asks, “How did you know he was here?” Batwoman replies, “Easy. I looked.” It’s the simplicity of the words and the delivery of them that punctuates the meaning of the story. That meaning? It’s not enough to just be seen, people need to be heard.

Batwoman airs every Sunday evening on the CW at 8pm EST

  • ‘Batwoman’, ‘The Flash’, and Many Other CW Shows Get Early Renewal

‘Batwoman’, ‘The Flash’, and Many Other CW Shows Get Early Renewal

The pandemic has changed up the TV landscape with many shows seeing a postponed release. We are a far cry away from the original September release date. Still, some broadcasters put a lot of trust in their shows even before they even officially aired. Among them, The CW is quite famous for its trend of early renewals. Well, it looks like they have started 2021 with a bang by doing exactly that. Their renewal includes various veteran shows, such as The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Riverdale. Jared Padalecki‘s Walker was picked up for an early second season before it officially aired. Various shows were also renewed for their third or fourth season, such as Batwoman, In the Dark, Legacies, Nancy Drew, and Roswell, New Mexico. Superman & Lois is also getting an additional two episodes for its upcoming season.

CW’s CEO Mark Pedowitz gave the following statement on this early renewal strategy:

Though we’re just a few weeks into the new season, we wanted to get a strategic head start on next season with these early renewals, which allows our production teams to start laying out story arcs and hiring staff, and at the same time, continues to provide us with a strong, stable schedule to build on for next season.

It is hard to deny that the ongoing pandemic might still have a strong influence on this decision. Cinemas are still closed, so TV is the dominant offering for those seeking some escapism. It was the perfect season for streaming services to grow, but it also was an opportunity for channels to gain a wider audience. CW is aiming to expand with some spin-offs, such as one focused on Painkiller from the recently canceled Black Lightning showThere was still the surprising cancelation of Green Arrow and the Canaries, which was going to continue on the show that put the channel’s DC shows on the map. We’ll see what direction the CW heads with its 2021 series and what the future has in store for its DC line-up.

  • ‘Batwoman’ Showrunner Carline Dries Confirms Black Mask for the Second Season

‘Batwoman’ Showrunner Carline Dries Confirms Black Mask for the Second Season

Batwoman is about to shake things up with its upcoming season. Javicia Leslie is taking over the mantle with her original character Ryan Wilder after Kate Kane has gone missing. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Caroline Dries discussed what we can expect from the second season, most notably, the villains that will make Wilder’s life quite complicated. In it, she reveals that a fan-favorite of Batman’s rogue gallery will make his CW premiere.

We have a couple big bads this season. One, [who] we teed up midway through last season, is this woman Safiyah, and she’s sort of Alice’s Achilles’ Heel. And ultimately yes with the False Face Society, we will see the leader of this gang as Black Mask later on in the season

It seems that the False Face Society will have a larger role throughout the series, as they will be responsible for their drug dealing. According to Dries, a big aspect of Wilder’s character is tied to it. At one point, she was in a relationship with someone who did drugs, which got her in jail. As such, she has a very personal vendetta against anyone pushing drugs in Gotham.

So far, they have not named who exactly is playing Black Mask. Shivaani Ghai is playing one of the big bad, Safiyah. Alice (Rachel Skarsten) is set to return as well, who might be on the hunt to find out what happened to her sister. So far, there is no exact casting announced for Black Mask, but we could get some info as we near the show’s premiere. Ewan McGregor just recently played the character of Black Mask in Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, so some viewers might be familiar with the mask-wearing mafia boss once Batwoman returns on January 17th.

  • First Look at Javicia Leslie’s New Batwoman Suit

First Look at Javicia Leslie’s New Batwoman Suit

It still was quite shocking when Ruby Rose decided to leave Batwoman after only one season. The actress decided her time on the show had come to an end, which led to the casting of our new Batwoman, Javicia Leslie. With production on the shows, second season recently picking up in Vancouver, set photos began to leak of Leslie‘s Ryan Wilder sporting Rose‘s original Batsuit. Yet, we suddenly had another set photo tease what might potentially be a new Batsuit for the next generation of heroes. It also included a new look at the show’s version of the Batmobile. Now, we got an official look at the suit we got teased in the blurry behind-the-scenes images.

The suit hasn’t been altered all that much with Wilder shedding the red wig that Kate had sewn into her cowl as a means for disguising herself. Leslie lets her natural hair flow with a bit of a red dye job towards the bottom. It also includes more red, as the new suit adds a set of red bracers to her forearms. It even looks like they raised the collar around her neck as a pseudo chin strap. While the changes seem minor, they allow Leslie to stand out and add her own flourishes to the role. We haven’t met her character, Ryan Wilder, in the show as of now, but she is set to make her comic book debut in Batgirl #50 set for release this week. It will be exciting to see how they will introduce her in the upcoming season, and which episode will showcase the new suit.

  • ‘Batwoman’ Set Photos Reveal Batmobile and New Wig

‘Batwoman’ Set Photos Reveal Batmobile and New Wig

Batwoman‘s second season will introduce fans to a brand new heroine. Javicia Leslie has taken over the mantle from Ruby Rose to protect Gotham. The rest of the series’ cast is set to return with a lot of the story still a secret. We got some pictures from the set that teased Leslie in the iconic costume from the first season. It seemed she was carrying over the red wig and costume from her predecessor. A new image from the set may have revealed that we will see some new changes over the course of the show. Twitter user @Pagmyst shared an image where we can see that Batwoman has ditched the red wig.

    https://twitter.com/Pagmyst/status/1317354669304283136

The image is from far away so we don’t get a good look if the costume has changed as well. Her new wig seems to be brown, which is a great way to highlight Leslie making the character her own. There is also the reveal of the show’s brand new Batmobile. @Pagmyst also shared a much better image of her new vehicle.

    https://twitter.com/Pagmyst/status/1317353770171260928

CW won’t have the same budget as the movies. We originally thought we saw what would become the Batmobile in the last video, as it seemed to be updated with CGI. Yet, we are getting an actual Batmobile that even has her symbol on the front. Perhaps she uses an older model owned by the original Batman before switching to a car of her own choice. It looks a bit strange with the orange decals. Our only giveaway that this is the Batmobile would be the orange symbol on the front. This also could highlight that Batwoman‘s second season will switch from its red to an orange visual to highlight the new direction.

  • ‘Gotham’s Alex Morf Cast as Victor Zsasz in ‘Batwoman’ Season 2

‘Gotham’s Alex Morf Cast as Victor Zsasz in ‘Batwoman’ Season 2

Looks like Batwoman‘s second season will start introducing some more iconic Batman villains. In general, the upcoming season will see a massive shift with series lead Ruby Rose being replaced by Javicia Leslie. She will play a new character named Ryan Wilder with Kate Kane’s disappearance being at the center of the second season’s story. Rachel Skarsten remains as the villainous Alice but will be joined by Shivani Ghai as Safiyah Sohail. Now, they are also adding the classic character of Victor Zsasz. He will be played by Gotham veteran Alex Morf, who played the gang leader Sykes. He also appeared in Mindhunter and Daredevil. His version of the character is described as follows.

A charismatic, skilled hitman with high, unpredictable energy. He proudly carves tally marks onto his skin for every victim he kills.

Well, it certainly sounds like Zsasz. The character’s iconic aspect is the carving of his victim count into his skin. We will see just how many people he has killed by the time the show rolls around and unveils his scars. The character has also appeared in Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn played by Chris Messina. Anthony Carrigan got a chance to play him in Gotham. It will be interesting to see what Mof brings to the table as the iconic character. We are curious how they will tie Wilder’s character to the larger Batman mythos that was teased throughout the first season. We did get introduced to this universe’s version of Hush, so there is a good chance he works for him throughout the season.

  • ‘Batwoman’ BTS Pictures Offer First Look at Javicia Leslie in Costume and Batmobile

‘Batwoman’ BTS Pictures Offer First Look at Javicia Leslie in Costume and Batmobile

Batwoman has just recently started production on its second season. The upcoming season will see a major change for the series as Rubie Rose left the show. Luckily, the team didn’t waste time and Javicia Leslie joined the show. She will play an original character named Ryan Wilder. The disappearance of Kate Kane will be a plot point throughout the season that will be explored. We’ve gotten smaller teases here and there of what she may look like in the costume. There was also the question if they would completely redesign it. Well, looks like they stayed true to the design from the previous season. We got a tease by the actress alongside a set photo of her full design.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CFlKJHtBaRU/?utm_source=ig_embed

.The costume looks great on Leslie. It is pretty much the exact same costume that Rose wore last season. They are still early in development so they may also be working on a second version of the costume that she wears later on. She is wearing the red wig that is a staple of the character’s comic design. So, there is a good chance this will remain the same as it is an iconic visual alongside the red bat symbol. There is, however, one brand new addition to the upcoming season. The website Canadagraphs got their hands on an image that seems to show what could be the Batmobile.

It is a little difficult to make out but it seems to be some kind of supercar. What makes it stand out are the MoCap tags stuck to it. So, this means they will most likely change it with CGI once filming has finished. The show has to work on a budget so we won’t be seeing anything near 1989’s Batman or the Tumblr from Batman Begins. It is still great to see it make an appearance after Kane spent the first season mostly using her private motorcycle. At least this way if Wilder drives to the Batcave she won’t be easy to track. According to Canadagraphs, the scene involves Batwoman trying to jump into the bus that belongs to Crows Security. Hopefully, they will reveal a render of what the Batmobile might look like once they added the effects.
