Report: Henry Cavill Could Make an Appearance at DC’s Hall H Panel

Comic-Con International officially kicks off this Thursday, and while Marvel Studios looks to be readying some surprises for fans, it looks like Warner Bros. and DC might have an even bigger surprise in store. In its breakdown of what to expect from SDCC this weekend, Deadline seemed to tease the long-awaited return of Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel.

According to the outlet, there is currently buzz that Cavill will show up to make a surprise appearance and talk about Superman. Cavill’s future as Superman has been uncertain ever since the Justice League movie. It seemed doubtful he’d get to don the cape again, especially as it was confirmed Warner Bros. – prior to the merger with Discovery – was working on multiple Superman projects, including a reboot with Ta-Nehisi Coates on board to pen the script. The status of that project is currently unknown, as Warner Bros. Discovery has been revamping its planned DC slate in recent months.

While Cavill has been busy starring in Netflix’s hit series, The Witcher, the actor has made it clear he’s ready to put the cape back on. In May 2021, a report from The Hollywood Reporter suggested Warner Bros. and DC were looking for a new actor to portray Superman in the DC Extended Universe. Perhaps it is possible those plans have since changed? After all, with David Zaslav now leading the way, Warner Bros. Discovery looks keen to overhaul DC’s film slate. For now, fans of Cavill’sSuperman should make sure to follow DC’s panel on Saturday, just in case. And if he doesn’t show, well, there should be plenty of news hitting regarding both Black Adam and Shazam: Fury of the Gods.

  • ‘Batgirl’ Headed to Theaters in 2023

‘Batgirl’ Headed to Theaters in 2023

A few years back, the previous studio heads over at Warner Brothers were interested in developing original films set within the DC Extended Universe for release exclusively on HBO Max, with the first of these being Batgirl and Blue Beetle. Since then, Blue Beetle has forgone its streaming release for a theatrical one. Earlier this year, Warner Brothers Discovery was debating giving Batgirl a theatrical release as well, citing David Zaslav’s distaste for releasing such big films on streaming.

There has been radio silence on a potential release for the film, still currently set to release on HBO Max. However, it seems there may be a change incoming for the film. In an updated release schedule from Warner Bros UK, Batgirl is now listed under “2023 Theatrical Release.”

Now this isn’t doesn’t mean the same for the United States and elsewhere as of right now for one specific reason. HBO Max currently is not available to the United Kingdom, meaning a theatrical release would be one of the only ways fans would be able to see it there.

The studio has the perfect opportunity to cash in on a theatrical release if they were to hold on the film until late next year. Batgirl could thrive in late 2023 release, sometime around November and December, considering the film is set during Christmas and that Warner Brothers currently has no DC films set for release following Blue Beetle’s release next August.

  • ‘Blue Beetle’ Set Photos Offer First Look at Kord Industries

‘Blue Beetle’ Set Photos Offer First Look at Kord Industries

Blue Beetle has been busy filming for some time, as we got our first look at how they’ll adapt his iconic design in live-action some time ago. Things have calmed down since the project but it looks like a new group of set photos shared by Twitter user @DcversoMidias have offered a new look at what’s to come in the film. While it’s not a new look at our heroic Blue Beetle, it is our first look at Kord Industries. Not only do we get a first look at the company’s logo but also what seems to be a station built by or for the company.

That is not all, as it seems that Kord Industries is not just all about clean energy development but also offers a hotel of some kind. An additional billboard includes the names of famous DC cities, Central City, Gotham, Metropolis, and more

It’ll be interesting to see how Kord Industries will connect to the overarching storyline, especially as we don’t know if the former Blue Beetle will also have a role in the film. There was once a rumor making the rounds on Jason Sudeikis playing the character, which ended up getting quickly denied. So, we’ll see what the project has in store for us once we see more from the set or even the first trailer drop at some point in the future.

  • ‘Black Adam’ Heading to SDCC

    ‘Black Adam’ Heading to SDCC

The Rock is cooking up an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took to his social media today to announce that Black Adam will be heading to Comic-Con later this month. Details regarding Warner Bros. Discovery’s SDCC plans for DC have been relatively unclear. While it was known that Netflix would be bringing Sandman to the convention, joining HBO Max’s animated Harley Quinn series, this marks the first confirmation that fellow DC property Black Adam will also be showcased at the event.

Black Adam will take the stage in Hall H on Saturday, Jul 23rd. Johnson seems to confirm he will be in attendance for the event, too, ending his post with “I’ll see you then…”

Starring along Johnson in the film are Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. Black Adam hails from director Jaume Collet-Serra, who helmed the feature from a script by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani.

Black Adam is currently slated to hit theaters on October 21st, 2022.

As of now, Black Adam is the only DC feature confirmed to be showcased at the convention. With Warner Bros. Discovery looking to revamp the way it approaches the convention, it’s possible Black Adam will remain the only film confirmed for SDCC.

  • New ‘Black Adam’ Toy Offers Best Look Yet at Film’s DC Villain

New ‘Black Adam’ Toy Offers Best Look Yet at Film’s DC Villain

It looks like a new toy line has found its way online that offers our best look yet ath the film’s new villain, Sabbac. We got our first look back when the Funko Pop line found its way online but it only seemed to offer a glimpse at what he’d look like. Now, a new figurine seemingly reveals that they’re going all-in with Sabbac’s design. As shared by @hodceu, we see that the character will have a pentagram engraved on his chest and rocking some horns.

The design definitely looks surprisingly comic-accurate and it’ll be interesting to see how the character ties into the overarching story. The first trailer for Black Adam didn’t tease what the central conflict will end up being outside of Adam and the Justice Society of America eventually butting heads, especially with Adam’s line stating that he kills people and isn’t a hero. So, who knows how bad this guy is going to end up being to make even the anti-hero’s brutal way look like a cakewalk.

Dwayne Johnson has proven that he’s very passionate about the Black Adam film, especially with it setting up his future in the DC Extended Universe. It’ll be interesting to see how it also sets up his eventual conflict with Shazam, as that film hinted at his existence but the sequel is seemingly heading in a completely unique direction. Yet, it seems obvious that they’ll have to come face-to-face eventually.

  • Jurnee Smollett Teases ‘Black Canary’ Film, Discusses Her Time as the Hero

Jurnee Smollett Teases ‘Black Canary’ Film, Discusses Her Time as the Hero

While Warner Bros. Discovery looks to revamp its DC offerings, it looks like Black Canary is still in the works. During a recent sit-down with The Hollywood Reporter to promote the Netflix film, Spiderhead, Black Canary actress Jurnee Smollett briefly teased what’s to come for the character.

Ever since the character’s live-action debut in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a Black Canary project. Then in April 2021, it was confirmed that a Black Canary movie was in the works at HBO Max with Smollett confirmed to return and Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green set to pen the script. While that project seems to have survived the DC clean-up – so far – Smollett isn’t actually able to talk too much about it. “I can’t talk about it, as you know. But I can say I really am excited about what we’re developing.”

Prior to the announcement of the Black Canary film, fans had taken to trending #BlackCanaryHBOSeries in hopes of landing a series sequel to Birds of Prey with Smollett’s Canary. For the actress, seeing the fan response was exciting. “Truly, one of the great joys of my professional career has been playing Black Canary,” she said. “To see the response from the fans online and engaging on Twitter. They are a massive reason why I am where I am, and any excitement I have about continuing on the Black Canary trajectory, it’s being made possible because of the fans.”

The actress also revealed that upon being cast in Birds of Prey, she received some great advice from a legendary actor that has made his own mark in the comic book movie world — Samuel L. Jackson. He has been playing Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Iron Man’s post credit scene. Upon being cast, she called him in hopes of figuring out how to approach the role. “And he said, “Baby, just go and piss on your territory.” So I’ve been just so truly, truly humbled by the response from the fans.”

As of now, the Black Canary movie for HBO Max does not have a director or a planned release date.

  • A Musical ‘is a Brilliant Choice for the Sequel to ‘Joker’

A Musical ‘is a Brilliant Choice for the Sequel to ‘Joker’

Nobody ever thought the Joker, of all characters, would be getting his own solo film, but here we are, over a billion dollars and a few Academy Awards later. Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips proved everyone wrong. No matter what you think about the film, it was a unique project set within a sea of other comic book media that has flooded the mainstream and become a staple in pop culture. Arthur Fleck’s story seemingly ended, so the thought that a sequel could exist much less should exist, seemed crazy. However, that’s what’s happening and the latest word on the project could turn out to be the best possible situation for a sequel.

The most important part of a sequel to Joker, a rather complete, and self-contained film, is that it really needs something to set it apart from anything that has come before it. Phillips and DC have to make this special and something super aberrant; to do so, they have to go out of the box. This makes a musical the absolute best path for the sequel; it’s something entirely unexpected and puts the project on a whole new playing field. The first film was a deep character study into who Arthur Fleck was, and what led him down this path to becoming the man who toppled a city in mere few hours. A musical is the opportunity to explore who this new Arthur Fleck is, presumably becoming, solely, the Joker from now on.

There were brief moments where we’d seen Arthur break out into random spurts of dance, experiencing moments of freedom for himself, after feeling so contained and restrained his entire life. The musical numbers could act as true expressions of who he is and who he has become; it’s an idea that is so far out of the box that could allow Phoenix to kick his performance into the next gear, and bring out some of that musical talent that we saw in Walk The Line.

Perhaps the most interesting avenue that this musical concept could tackle is the romance between Joker and Harley Quinn. The news that Lady Gaga is in talks to potentially portray Harley Quinn in the film, a character who has risen to even higher levels of popularity via Margot Robbie’s portrayal, was as surprising as the news that the sequel was in development. The film could tackle the relationship between the characters that the DCEU had only scratched. The sequel could explore the blossoming relationship between Joker and Harley Quinn, the early moments where their love seemed so perfect. Their relationship, of course, is one of the most toxic and abusive in the DC Universe, but the film can actually focus on the romanticization of the situation between the two by tackling that early love through Joker’s manipulation of Quinzel in helping him escape, and him turning her into Harley Quinn. Imagine it as something akin to the “Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend” number from Birds of Prey, where Harley imagines her interrogation as a dance number, just on a larger scale throughout the sequel. It can be a play on the classic rom-com, a massive course change from the first film, portraying a “perfect romance” which in reality is just as awful as expected.

Developing Joker: Folie À Deux as a musical is a creative and brilliant pivot from the first film, moving it into a completely new atmosphere and ensuring it doesn’t have to worry too much about riding the tails of the first film. It’s a fun idea that if executed well could be yet another unique, and fresh entry into the ever-expanding world of comic book media.

  • New ‘Black Adam’ Promo Art Offers a Closer Look at Hawkman’s Full Design

New ‘Black Adam’ Promo Art Offers a Closer Look at Hawkman’s Full Design

It looks like more promotional art has found its way from Black Adam. While a big highlight of these visuals was in the form of the titular character as well as offering a tease of the upcoming silver screen debut of the Justice Society of America. While the JSA has some iconic members and we got our first look ahead of the recent trailer drop through Funko Pops, it does seem like new promotional material has surfaced, as shared by Twitter user @TaurooAldebaran.

What stands out this time around is we get a new wingless look at Hawkman. Aldis Hodge is taking on the task of bringing the iconic JSA member to the silver screen and it finally gives us a confirmation of his iconic battle mace. He also seemingly will have a shield that’ll definitely help him in his fight against Black Adam that was teased in earlier promotional material.

We still know very little about the film and the trailer has seemingly stuck to only teasing a small part of the overarching story. It does try to paint the picture that the JSA is going to face off against Adam, but it does seem like there are other threats in the future, especially one with their different ideologies. Still, his overall design is great and we can’t wait to see more of Hodge‘s Hawkman when the film releases later this year.

  • UPDATE: Amber Heard Not Cut From ‘Aquaman’ Sequel

UPDATE: Amber Heard Not Cut From ‘Aquaman’ Sequel

Despite a report to the contrary, a spokesperson for Amber Heard has stated that the actress will not be removed from the upcoming DC film Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom.

Referencing a report from Just Jared, Heard’s spokesperson had the following to say, “The rumor mill continues as it has from day one — inaccurate, insensitive and slightly insane.” The previous report stated that Heard’s role would be entirely recast and her scenes reshot following the conclusion of the defamation trial with her ex-husband, Johnny Depp.

While Heard’s role in the Aquaman sequel was said to be considerably smaller than her role in the first film, it would still be expensive and problematic for Warner to cut her, recast her and reshoot the scenes. It’s possible that Heard’s role as Mera, Aquaman’s love interest, might be recast for future appearances in the DC universe, but for now it seems that the actress will remain on board through her already filmed appearance.

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom will hit theaters March 17th, 2023.
