  • The Emmas of ‘CRUELLA’ Dish on Their Upcoming Roles

The Emmas of ‘CRUELLA’ Dish on Their Upcoming Roles

Disney is no stranger to breathing new life into their classic animated films in the form of live-action ones. These films have destroyed the box office numerous times and garnered much acclaim from critics and fans alike. The latest entry from the House of Mouse might follow suit soon. A reimagining of the classic 101 Dalmations villain, Cruella DeVille, Cruella stars two of the biggest Emmas in Hollywood, Emma Stone, and Emma Thompson. Murphy’s Multiverse recently got to attend a virtual junket for the film where both Emmas were around for and dished on their upcoming roles.

Emma Thompson plays the Baroness, a high-society fashionista who may very well give Anna Wintour and The Devil Wears Prada‘s Miranda Priestly a run for their money. Cunning and downright nasty, the Baroness is one of Thompson‘s few forays playing a villain. Thompson talked about what it was like to bring such a character to life.

I had such fun doing her, because I think I’ve been asking for quite a number of years if I could be a villain, a proper villain. And I spent decades playing what my mother used to call,  “Good women in frocks.” And, now I got to play a really evil woman in frocks. But oh, boy, the frocks. I mean, they wore me, actually, really is what happened. I had just the best, best time. And every time Em and I would come on set, we’d just look at each other and walk around each other like we were sculptures or works of art or something, which we were. I mean, it was in a way, everyone created the Baroness, and then I sort of stepped in and just said the words.

Playing a highly problematic character like the Baroness, Thompson was also asked whether she based her approach to the Baroness on any of the problematic individuals she’s encountered in Hollywood.

I was very well brought up by a very kind and wonderful woman, my mom, and my dad, a wonderful man. I was surrounded by lovely, kind people. And my experience of people who were truly mean like that and truly hard and narcissistic is quite rare. But there are quite a number of them in show business. Mentioning no names but some of those people have come to light recently. Awfulness in any profession, in any walk of life, is always possible. And I suppose the Baroness is a mixture of all kinds of people. She’s quite venal, but her greed is really just for herself. It’s like she can’t bear anyone else to succeed in any way. She has to destroy all the competition, instead of thinking that the competition might bring her game up, might make her better.

And there’s of course Emma Stone, who plays the titular Cruella. This version of Cruella is a far cry from the one we’ve come to familiarize ourselves with. The movie explores the origins of the character, her familial ties, and what she’s most passionate about. Stone talked briefly about how she feels about the controversial character and the way her story is presented in the film.

It’s very nature versus nurture, this story.  So what she would find a weakness early on or what her mother would deem a weakness early on with just her ability to really hit the ceiling quickly, her kind of volatility, her reactiveness, becomes sort of her strength through her creativity and through her genius.  It’s interesting.  I think it really is a movie about how your weaknesses do sort of become your strengths, in a way.

Although again, you know, this isn’t necessarily an aspirational character, so to speak, except for the fact that she’s really harnessing her creativity and who she is in a very strong way, and she’s learning to accept that who she is in her nature ha-does win in the end.  Um, so yeah, I don’t know.  Her biggest weakness in the end, well, I mean, you know, the original character of Cruella de Vil does get to some pretty dark places, and I wouldn’t necessarily call those a positive thing.

Stone also briefly talks about playing Cruella’s nicer alter ego Estella, whose name happens to be the character’s actual birth name, and how different she is from her dark side.

Well, you know, it’s interesting, because there is a sort of rejection of Estella that comes at a point, and I think, you know, Estella is sweet but she’s not fully embodied.  So I would say there is something about Cruella that’s pretty enticing because she just kind of is who she is. She’s in full acceptance and autonomy there.  So I am kind of interested in that Cruella world.  But, you know, that said, she does some things that I don’t think I would necessarily cross.  But to be honest, I kind of prefer Cruella.

Cruella is set to premiere in theaters and Disney+ Premiere Access on May 28.

  • ‘Secret Invasion’ Adds Directors Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim

‘Secret Invasion’ Adds Directors Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim

It looks like Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion has finally found its directors, as The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that Let Him Go‘s Thomas Bezucha and The Looming Tower‘s Ali Selim will be directing their upcoming series. Plot details still remain under wraps, but they will work alongside Mr. Robot‘s Kyle Bradstreet, who will act as head writer and executive producer of the show. It will see the return of Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn as their iconic MCU roles of Nick Fury and Talos. The Disney+ series has already expanded its cast with Damnation‘s Killian Scott, The Crown’s Olivia Colman, One Night in Miami‘s Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke.

The series will most likely explore the invasion of Skrulls on Earth. Spider-Man: Far From Home teased that they are living normal lives on the planet, which might explore the way we see foreigners. While we assumed they might focus more on the Kree, it seems likely that they want to explore the moral dilemma of some Skrulls being evil while others are good. It would add an interesting layer of complexity after they were showcased as a surprisingly good force of nature in Captain Marvel. Hopefully, we will get more information on the series as we near the production start. It’ll be interesting to see who we can trust and who we can’t, especially with it potentially tying into the newly titled The Marvels film.

  • Disney’s ‘Jungle Cruise’ Now Heading to Disney+ Premier Access Alongside Theatrical Release

Disney’s ‘Jungle Cruise’ Now Heading to Disney+ Premier Access Alongside Theatrical Release

Even as cinemas are recovering, there still remains some uncertainty about the potential of gathering people in an enclosed space. Currently, most upcoming projects in the next months will release digitally in some form or another. HBO Max started the trend by announcing all of its 2021 films would release simultaneously in cinemas and on the streaming platform. Disney followed in these footsteps with Mulan, as well as Raya and the Last Dragon before continuing it with the upcoming releases of Cruella and Black Widow. Well, it looks like one more film is joining them, as Dwayne Johnson has announced that his upcoming film Jungle Cruise will release in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access on July 30th.

It’s not a surprise that they are making this decision, as it is still uncertain how a film will perform in cinemas. Godzilla vs. Kong managed to do the unthinkable a year ago, but it isn’t a sure-fire confirmation every film will be able to do so. So, Disney may be trying to take a safer route as Black Widow is also heading for a simultaneous release in theaters and on the silver screen. The latest release with the format may have also proven to be quite profitable. So, Disney saw the potential of continuing to utilize the service to avoid any potential heavy losses if people tend to remain at home until the pandemic truly is “over.” We’ll have to keep an eye out on the Box Office for the coming months to see if the later half of the year might see the end of simultaneous digital releases.

  • Marvel Studios’ Disney+ Approach Causes Industry Concern

Marvel Studios’ Disney+ Approach Causes Industry Concern

It looks like Marvel Studios’ current new direction with Disney+ is causing a stir again, as a report by Variety has revealed that many industry experts are wary of their new strategy. Usually, shows are produced by a showrunner, who pretty much organizes the production, directors, writers, and maps out the overall story. In Marvel’s case, these shows have a head writer but don’t actually include anyone with the title of showrunner. It has been openly communicated by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige but has somehow managed to fall under the radar until now. As Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s Kari Skogland put it, they are using “the features model.” That means that they are adapting their production methodology from filmmaking in their new long-form format rather than fully embracing classic television conventions. She had the following to say on the process:

It’s a nuance, but it’s one that I think is being embraced more and more because the job honestly in these big, epic miniseries or shows is too big,” says Skogland, who’s also an executive producer. “I was in the writers’ room so that I could really absorb what was being said and be part of the process by floating ideas. As we were going through production, we would workshop scenes and then ask for rewrites on things. So [Malcolm Spellman] was still very much a part of the whole process, but it’s a slightly different mechanical way it comes down. Honestly, it’s very effective and efficient, because it’s just too much work for any one person.

Marvel Studios is well-known in the industry for its unorthodox approach, which allowed them to establish 23 interconnected films. Of course, switching up the cinematic landscape and adding a new level of restrictions comes at a price, as peers will doubt its validity in making television. It brought back a discussion regarding the creative autonomy that showrunners usually hold and if this will lead to the studio losing talent. David Goodman, the president of Writers Guild of America West, has shown his concern for the model but highlights how unique Marvel Studios is as a case in the industry.

If Marvel still wants to have its product be at the standard that people are coming to expect from it, they’re going to need good writers, and they’re going to have to invest those writers with responsibility. I stand in awe of what they’ve done at Marvel. Others have tried, and they haven’t succeeded

Yet, there are some legitimate concerns about the approach. Kevin Feige and the companies’ future vision for the Marvel Cinematic Universe acts as the main showrunner connecting it. It is an environment that won’t interest every type of creative out there, which could lead to some strife, which we’ve seen back in the day with Edgar Wright. Though, it isn’t uncommon for industry experts to fear strong changes to the status quo. Its implementation may serve the MCU’s expansion and won’t become an ongoing standard, which also makes Marvel Studios a perfect jumping-on point for talent. It is the same environment that gave Malcolm Spellman the chance to expand into film with Captain America 4.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ VFX Head Talks How They Reinvented Falcon For the Show

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ VFX Head Talks How They Reinvented Falcon For the Show

The first and, maybe, the only season of Falcon and the Winter Soldier wowed audiences with its high-caliber sequences that rivaled any Marvel feature out there. It touched them with a poignant, resonant, as well as emotional story on race and purpose. We spoke to the show’s VFX supervisor Eric Leven, who gave us some insight into how the show was crafted in light of the pandemic and how some key character moments were influenced by the VFX department.

Along with Wandavision, Falcon took the brunt of all the effects of the pandemic delays. Disney+’s Assembled documentary for the series outlined their troubles, as they had to change their shooting locations unexpectedly from Puerto Rico to Prague. It also offered insight into how the pandemic limited their scope in location scouting. Leven gave us some details on what it was like for their department to work in spite of all the delays and how it worked to their advantage.

We actually never stopped. The VFX department never shut down. Obviously, the pandemic is terrible for everyone but for the VFX department, it was nice because we sort of rushed into production. With a lot of productions, their train is moving before all the tracks are laid down. When we stopped shooting, we were close to being done. I think we had a month to go. So when we stopped, that was a chance for us to take a step back, breathe, and think “How do we make these sequences better?” We had all the time to work that out which was nice.

The show didn’t just reinvent Falcon’s mantle and costume but it also changed the way he engages in combat. Now that he has the shield, Sam Wilson has an array of new abilities and tricks at his disposal. We asked Leven what the process was like in exploring his fighting style from when we first see him in the first episode to when we see him carry the shield in the finale.

The shield was a big thing. We spent a lot of time with our pre-viz department just coming up with different ways he could be using that shield. Different poses and different things he could do with the wings. There was a lot of conversations about how active the wings were. There was a big note to make sure the wings were not too prehensile. We didn’t want them to seem like they had a life of their own.

One notable change was Sam Wilson’s use of firearms. All of Falcon’s previous appearances in the MCU have seen him fire a few shots from his submachine gun mounted on his wrists. Leven revealed that guns were originally supposed to be part of Sam’s arsenal in the early stages of the show but were nixed as the VFX crew was staging his sequences. It’s a very fascinating detail that a lot of people may not have noticed and one that can be interpreted as a statement of how Sam operates as Captain America now.

I’ll tell you one of the things that came up. If you remember in all the other movies with Falcon, Falcon always has guns. The one thing we saw very quickly was, we had a pre-viz where he had the shield and he was shooting a gun over the top of it. It was just very interesting. I had a visceral reaction of, “Oh no. Captain America does not shoot guns.” So that was one of the first things to go.

Now, we’ve seen Steve Rogers carry a firearm along with his shield in the past. Captain America: The First Avenger showcases Steve firing a weapon multiple times all throughout while carrying the shield. Granted, it was World War 2 and every one of them had to have a sidearm but in modern-day iterations of the character, he no longer relied on it. Leven also talked about how nixing Sam’s firearm resulted in more visually interesting sequences for the character.

In this show, Falcon never fires a weapon. He doesn’t have a sidearm and that was something that was part of the original design but we jettisoned that pretty early. One of the things I’m most proud of in this show is in the very beginning. Sam, in the script, when he approaches the wingsuit pilot he’s gonna get rid of, just pulls out his gun and shoots him. I remember talking to Zoe and Kari like, “I have a better idea that doesn’t involve him shooting this guy in cold blood. Maybe we could use it.” So that’s how we came up with the idea of him actually flying underneath him and pulling his parachute and getting that guy out of the scene. I was really happy with that.

  • ‘Captain America’s Anthony Mackie Already Preparing for His Next Big Project

‘Captain America’s Anthony Mackie Already Preparing for His Next Big Project

Falcon and the Winter Soldier just ended a few weeks ago, but we’re still wondering what the future has in store for the newly formed Captain America. Anthony Mackie‘s Sam Wilson finally took on the mantle at the end of the last season. In an interview withThe Daily Show’s Trevor Noah, they discuss getting in shape for Marvel movies. In it, he reveals that it takes around four months to get in shape for a role and ends up confirming he is already in preparation for the next one.

You take the four months. Like right now, I am at the end of the first month of the four-month process to get back away from Fat Mackie to Movie Mackie.

The way he phrases it also hints that he will join a Marvel Studios project that could start filming in the next three to four months. There is also the possibility that he may be joining one midway. It is unlikely he is going through extensive training for four months just to have a cameo. So, it seems likely he’ll have a substantial role that may also require him to be physically active. So, we could see the return of Wilson’s Captain America sooner than expected.

Of course, there is a chance he is generalizing and could be preparing for a different project, but he seems to be hinting at this being the regular process before joining a Marvel Studios’ project. There is also the recent announcement of Captain America 4, which he claimed he only heard about while shopping. The timing just seems interesting. Whatever role he might be preparing for, hopefully, we get some news on it in the near future.

  • ‘Moon Knight’: New Set Photos Offer First Look at Ethan Hawke

‘Moon Knight’: New Set Photos Offer First Look at Ethan Hawke

Moon Knight has just recently entered production in Budapest and it looks like it didn’t take long for the first set of photos to find their way online. Luckily, it seems that someone was able to get a photo of Ethan Hawke on set, which teases his potential role in the Disney+ series. The Budapest Reporter shared the set photo of the actor in a brown tweed blazer. It seems he also has a walking cane which isn’t shown in the image and he is channeling a “mad scientist” look with long-greyish hair. The outlet believes he could either be playing Dracula or Moon Knight’s informant Bertrand Crawley. He is walking around in broad daylight which could rule out the prince of darkness and Crawley isn’t portrayed as a villain for the hero.

We still know very little about Moon Knight‘s plot. Hawke is confirmed to be playing the series’ main antagonist. So, they might be shooting an interior sequence and he simply was walking on the set. Dracula goes by classic vampire rules. Yet, it seems strange to introduce the prince of darkness in Moon Knight rather than the upcoming Blade film. We’ll see which direction the Disney+ takes. Signs seem to be hinting at a more supernatural-inspired story and it could make the series stand out from the other Marvel Studios’ produced series. Here’s hoping we get some more details on the show, as we are still waiting for more casting information on the rest of the cast.

  • ‘Falcon and Winter Soldier’ Tops Netflix and Amazon Shows in April’s Viewership

‘Falcon and Winter Soldier’ Tops Netflix and Amazon Shows in April’s Viewership

The biggest drawback of streaming services lies in their stubbornness to publicize any viewership data. Anything running on television was made available through Nielsen. So, we were once able to get a grasp of how our favorite shows were performing. Disney+, Netflix, Amazon, and others aren’t forced to make this information available for advertisers, which makes it difficult to assess a show’s success and potential future. Luckily, there are various analytics companies that try to get a better look at how they are doing. Of course, Marvel Studios’ new venture into long-form storytelling made the world wonder how they would perform and it looks like Disney has nothing to worry about. According to Variety, the TV analytics provider TVision announced that Falcon and the Winter Soldier was March’s most-watched series.

They analyze the viewership numbers between the three major streaming networks, Disney+, Netflix, and Amazon. According to their analysis, the latest Marvel Studios show was viewed 40.4 times more frequently than regular TV shows. The series beat out the other competitors, such as This Is a Robbery: The World’s Biggest Art Heist and The Serpent in April. It even beat WandaVision in March after only premiering on March 19th with 43.4x in comparison to the 35.1x factor of its predecessor. This data is based on their panel where they track 25,000 titles among 5,000 households from connected televisions. It’s not too dissimilar how classic TV series are tracked.

This development also highlights the staying power of weekly releases, as even fan-favorite Netflix series Bridgerton barely made it into their list with 11.7x. Falcon and the Winter Soldier managed to have an impressive staying power from its premiere into the following month. It is believed that its direct ties to Avengers: Endgame‘s ending also boosted the show’s appeal alongside its relevant social messaging. It’ll be interesting to see how Loki does, especially with the recent change to Wednesday releases.

  • How Marvel Studios Latest Reveals May Hint at the End of Phases

How Marvel Studios Latest Reveals May Hint at the End of Phases

We’ve kicked off the week with a rather curious reveal. May 2nd is the anniversary of when the first Iron Man was was released back in 2008. In addition, recent films like Godzilla vs. Kong and Mortal Kombat have helped continue the revival of cinemas. So, in a way, Marvel Studios wanted to use this chance to highlight the future of the franchise alongside the silver screen’s return. In it, we got the release dates and titles for the Black Panther and Captain Marvel sequels. We even got the confirmation that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will release in 2023. Now, these continuous reveals make us wonder how the classic “Phases” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will work without any information on it. Is this perhaps the end of their classic format?

Let’s start with the noteworthy absentees. Of course, the cinema celebration trailer did not reference any of the Disney+ series. Yet, it didn’t showcase every single film. The upcoming Blade film, which stars Mahershala Ali, wasn’t mentioned at all. The film had a prominent role during Disney’s Investors Day among the line-up. Yet, it somehow was not referenced as Marvel Studios builds up into its 2023 slate. They even included the same teaser for Fantastic Four that got revealed during the December event. Even the Sony-owned Spider-Man: No Way Home had a teaser. So, it would imply that the film may have gotten pushed back. Stacy Osei-Kuffour has joined the project to pen the script. So, it definitely has entered a form of pre-production. We also have no sign of Deadpool 3, which also was confirmed to be part of the MCU moving forward. Now, this move may hint at these projects not releasing until after May 2023, but we’ve seen their scheduled shift before. There is also that mysterious slate for a Marvel project in October 2022, which had many wondering if it might be a placeholder for Blade.

We’ve seen things change frequently. At one point, it was planned for Phase 4 to end with Thor: Love and Thunder. Suddenly, we’re talking about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 being part of the slate in May 2023. It could be part of Phase 4, but there is a possibility they’ve already teased their fifth phase. Marvel Studios’ new strategy might have made the phases a thing of the past. We no longer have a strict slate but an ever-changing development cycle. Especially since the pandemic hit, they’ve had to adjust their focus with Disney+ growing in importance. So, we might not see the phases we are used to. There is no overarching saga for now, even if some points are hinting at a Multiverse arc. Yet, we’ve also seen many different storylines getting set up. WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier have offered many new avenues for the franchise to explore. It won’t be as straightforward as the Infinity Saga moving forward. So, we may be talking in Arcs rather than Phases as the MCU continues to expand.
