  • ‘Eternals’ and ‘Stranger Things’ Scanline VFX Studio Acquired by Netflix

‘Eternals’ and ‘Stranger Things’ Scanline VFX Studio Acquired by Netflix

It looks like Netflix has been quite happy with the work by the effects studio Scanline VFX. So much o that they have now purchased the company that famously worked on some of their most famous originals, Strangers Things. They are also a strong force for bringing Marvel projects to life like the recently released Eternals film. Of course, these are just a small glimpse at their complete repertoire.

It seems the deal will be finalized in the first quarter of next year, but no details have been released on the deal. The interesting direction is that Scanline will continue to work as a standalone business. So, we might still see their name included in future Marvel or DC projects. This purchase follows shortly after Unity teased their interest in buying Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital for $1.625M.

Netflix currently is working with them on the fourth season of Stranger Things and the recently released Cowboy Bebop. Their Marvel repertoire includes most of the recent projects going all the way back to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Recent releases include Free Guy, Godzilla vs. King Kong, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It’s a big get for Netflix in the industry and it’ll be interesting to see

  • ‘Eternals’ BTS Image Hints at an Earlier Appearance of Harry Styles’ Eros

‘Eternals’ BTS Image Hints at an Earlier Appearance of Harry Styles’ Eros

It’s already been a few weeks since Eternals was released, but there are still some curious details that find their way online, especially with the reveal of Harry Styles playing Eros. While we’re still wondering how exactly the new origin of this alien race might connect to Thanos, it seems that Styles’ character may have had an appearance at an earlier point in the story. Sprite actress Lia McHugh took to Instagram to share some pictures from behind-the-scenes with one including Styles. Yet, their outfits and Richard Madden‘s inclusion raise some eyebrows for those that have seen the post-credit sequence.

The outfits they are wearing are the ones we see them in when they are on their way to earth. So, we may have spent some time with others from the race before they eventually made their trip o fight the Deviants. Madden‘s inclusion highlights that this is probably from earlier in the film, as he’s not around when Styles makes his grand appearance. There’s, of course, the chance that the post-credit sequence would’ve included a flashback or even a visit to the World Forge, where they meet others like themselves.

We know that Eros is an Eternal, but we don’t know if there’s something special about his kind, especially with the mystery of how he relates to Thanos. There’s a chance that he might be adopted or that the Celestials tested out the evolution aspect on a handful of Eternals who remained on Titan. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait too long until we get an answer to these questions.

  • ‘Eternals’ En Route to Pass ‘Black Widow’s Global Box Office, Eyeing Potential $425M+ Run

‘Eternals’ En Route to Pass ‘Black Widow’s Global Box Office, Eyeing Potential $425M+ Run

There has been much discussion surrounding Eternals when it came to its measure of success. It hasn’t been accepted as much by critics as other films of the franchise and even got a B Audience Score which showed it was less the crowd-pleaser that many are accustomed to. Still, it opened to the fourth-biggest opening of 2021 and since the pandemic began. It did face a harsher drop in the second weekend but was on par with other recent releases like Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Still, it looks like the film is on track to pass Black Widow‘s worldwide box office.

The film officially passed the $300M mark over the weekend and already beat Free Guy’s global $331.4M cume. At this rate, it might pass Black Widow‘s $376M in the next few weeks Shang-Chi currently stands at $418M and there is a chance that the latest installment could pass that film’s box office if it hits the higher end of its speculated $445M global run. The film is carried by a very impressive international run and has seen some mid-week impressive numbers even with harsher drops on weekends. South Korea has been a strong market for the film with $21M and leading the international markets.

Even with some of the criticism surrounding the project, it does look like the film is still having an impressive box office run without a Chinese release. Spider-Man: No Way Home may be the first to get that release and many are predicting it’s going to be the first post-pandemic release to pass the billion mark. So, Marvel Studios is doing quite well even with the challenging situations posed by the pandemic.

  • The Aftermath of ‘Eternals’ May Lead Into ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’

The Aftermath of ‘Eternals’ May Lead Into ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’

Marvel Studios continues to expand in new and creative ways. We’ve seen the MCU’s version of Earth changing in ways we never thought possible, such as now a giant Celestial sticking out like marble from the ground. Tiamut the Sleeper has now become a fixture within the MCU after the release of Eternals and his awakening might have led to some curious ripples across the world. With rumors hinting at Atlantis and Namor playing an integral role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, there’s a good chance this event might cause the unearthing of Atlantis.

In Eternals, we learn that Earth is actually an egg. The otherworldly Celestials are born when planets reach a certain level of population and then bring entire galaxies to life as a result. Tiamut would’ve joined their ranks if the Eternals (which a little help from the Celestial himself) kept him from, well, hatching. The build-up to that moment was in the form of countless earthquakes hinting at the arrival of the event known as The Emergence. The fact that his hand and head start popping out of the planet will certainly leave behind cracks in the planet. So, if Atlantis was hidden away for so long, there’s a chance his awakening might’ve opened up the crack that kept the underwater city hidden.

Of course, if there’s an Earth-altering event that may change the ecosystem we know and love, any scientist is going to explore the aftermath to make sure our planet isn’t falling apart. This might become the catalyst that unleashes the Atlanteans, most notably Namor, out into the world. They are no longer safe from outsiders. Who knows how the Emergence may have also affected their city, as most of the earthquakes seemed to be underwater. Desperation will push anyone to a darker path and if they hint at a Vibranium connection, a conflict is inevitable.

  • Patton Oswalt Not Only Voiced But Also Played Pip the Troll on ‘Eternals’ Set

Patton Oswalt Not Only Voiced But Also Played Pip the Troll on ‘Eternals’ Set

We all got a nice surprise when Harry Styles made his MCU premiere as Eros in the first post-credit sequence of Eternals. He wasn’t alone, as his character got introduced to the character of Pip the Troll, who was voiced by the always iconic Patton Oswalt. It turns out, he did quite a bit more than that to bring the computer-generated character to life, as he was also on set to play the character.

Weta Digital’s Matt Aitken revealed that he was on the sound stage performing the entire act on his knees so they’d have the right height for the character. So, he did the entire motion capture for the character to bring Pip to life for the latest Marvel Studios film. He goes on to share that

We ended up replacing Patton Oswalt with Pip and the corridor, because we needed to do all that interactive portal light and extend it. But if you’re looking at Eros, then his face will definitely be the face, but everything else is CG in those shots.

    Matt Aitken

Weta Digital also shared a first look at the visual breakdown of the character that Comic Book’s Adam Barnhardt shared on Twitter:

    https://twitter.com/adambarnhardt/status/1461756972735287308?s=21

Oswalt joined in the fun and even offered a closer look at him behind-the-scenes in the mo-cap suit.

It’s great to see his commitment to the role and might hint at him returning to play the character whenever Pip the Troll might make his grand return. James Gunn‘s brother Sean Gunn famously played Rocket Raccoon in the Guardians of the Galaxy films walking on his knees while Bradley Cooper purely voiced the character. It’s always interesting to get a look behind-the-scenes on these projects, especially how they bring these CGI-heavy characters to life. It certainly sounds like Styles had some fun with Oswalt on his knees while introducing his character.

  • ‘Earth X’ Writer Teases How ‘Eternals’ Ikaris Could Become Galactus in the MCU

‘Earth X’ Writer Teases How ‘Eternals’ Ikaris Could Become Galactus in the MCU

While Eternals is influenced by the well-known comic runs of the alien race by creator Jack Kirby and Neil Gaiman’s modern run, it has also become clear that the films were heavily influenced by the more obscure 1999 Earth X storyline. Written by Jim Krueger and Alex Ross, Earth X introduced the story of an Earth that had a Celestial growing inside of it. It depicts a dystopian future where the entire world has developed superpowers.

Not just that, it also included numerous plot points that seem far beyond where the current Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading, but the fact that Eternals creators eagerly dove into the material could suggest that it may have more to offer. So, when asked by Bleeding Cool if there are other aspects of Earth X the series that came after it that he would like to see Marvel adapt in future movies, Krueger teased a particularly interesting development for Eternals’ character:

I think the MCU is an amazing place and I wouldn’t begin to throw them ideas… That said, in the back story continuity of Earth X, the former Galactus has become a star…because a star was once a sun, it leads me to wonder about the fate and potential irony of a certain Celestial-serving character who finds himself in the sun at the end of the movie. Could this character potentially and ultimately offer the balance to the cosmos if the Celestials became too powerful? Sounds like a pretty great person to become Galactus one day.

    Jim Krueger

Krueger is no doubt referring to Ikaris, who seemed to meet his end by flying into the sun at the end of Eternals. It’s difficult to imagine future stories surrounding the Eternals themselves without such a keystone character. Still, re-introducing him as Galactus – a major player yet to be seen in the MCU – would be quite an interesting move. Anything is possible, though, especially considering that Earth X apparently served as an “uncanny bible” for the Eternals writers.

  • How the ‘Earth-X’ Writer Helped Create ‘Eternals’ 20+ Years Ago

How the ‘Earth-X’ Writer Helped Create ‘Eternals’ 20+ Years Ago

Jim Krueger has built up quite a legacy in the comic industry, most notably with his work on the Earth X trilogy alongside Alex Ross. It explored a dystopian take on the Marvel universe, where that version of Earth is implanted with a Celestial egg. Now, watchers of the recent MCU film Eternals might remember that very plotline being a central element of the recent release.

In a recent interview with Bleeding Cool, the creator of Earth X revealed that he may have planted a seed of his own in the head of Kevin Feige almost 20 years ago. Krueger shared that he discussed the potential of this concept working with the Eternals all the way when his comic was just released in paperback.

Well, what’s funny, is that I first met Kevin Fiege years ago, after the first trade paperback of Earth X had come out. We sat down a number of times and Kevin shared his love for Earth X. He also shared that it was at a time when many of the Marvel heroes, including X-Men, Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four. At the time, Kevin told me how much he wanted to make Earth X. And I told him that I thought he could do it with the Eternals. Talk about seeds being planted. It didn’t take hundreds of thousands of years like a Celestial, but it took almost 25.

    Jim Krueger

It’s always crazy to look back at conversations or ideas that take years to actually grow into something. Marvel Studios’ growth alone into the studio that it is today would make it a reality that Eternals is the fourth-highest opening film of the year and that during a pandemic. Earth X is a very obvious inspiration for the film and to think that Kevin Feige and Jim Krueger first planted the idea so long ago.

  • Victoria Alonso On ‘Eternals’ Critical Reception and Marvel Studios Commitment to Diversity

Victoria Alonso On ‘Eternals’ Critical Reception and Marvel Studios Commitment to Diversity

Victoria Alonso recently was promoted to President of Physical and Postproduction, Visual Effects, and Animation. She’s been very outspoken on her hopes and passions to continue pushing the envelope on diversity in Hollywood. She was presented with the Visionary Award during the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ Outfest Legacy Awards event and gave a passionate speech, especially with the recent critical reception surrounding Eternals and their future commitment to diversity.

We have tried to stir it up and sometimes the critics are not with us. That’s OK. That’s OK. We thank you for being a critic. We thank you for writing about us. And the fans will decide. Diversity and inclusion is not a political game for us. It is 100 percent a responsibility because you don’t get to have the global success that we have given the Walt Disney Company without the support of people around the world of every kind of human there is.

    Victoria Alonso

She also went on to highlight their commitment to diversity when it comes to storytelling. Eternals was a big step with the MCU’s first gay and deaf superheroes among the main cast. She goes on to highlight:

I want to do it all. I want to make sure that I get out there and I create as much change as time will allow.”

    Victoria Alonso

The studio has been pushing more into this direction, especially with shows focused on their first Muslim-American superhero in Ms. Marvel, and a Mexican lead in Gael Garcia Bernal with the long-rumored Werewolf by Night Disney+ special. They’ve been pushing the franchise into new territory and made landmarks through projects like Shang-Chi and Black Panther. So, the MCU might continue to expand in important and relevant ways.

  • ‘Eternals’ Crosses $100 Million at the Domestic Box Office

‘Eternals’ Crosses $100 Million at the Domestic Box Office

In its second weekend, Marvel Studios’ Eternals managed to successfully cross $100 million at the domestic box office. While the film felt the expected second-weekend drop, falling 61-percent, Eternals retained the top spot with $27.5 million for a 10-day domestic total of $118.4 million.

For comparison’s sake, the 61-percent dip is less than both Marvel Studios’ Black Widow and Sony’s Venom: Let There be Carnage. However, it’s higher than that of Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. With muddled reviews, however, the film wasn’t expected to have quite as much holdover as Shang-Chi.

While it still has no China release, the film is doing quite well overseas for Marvel Studios. The film pulled in another $75 million at the international box office with Korea bringing in another $22 million and the UK pulling in $143 million. As of now, Eternals is sitting at $281.4 million worldwide, with the film looking to cross the $300 million worldwide mark sometime this week.

Giving Eternals a run for its money this weekend was Clifford the Big Red Dog. The film, which took in $22 million, was released both in theaters and on Paramount+. Despite the hybrid release, Clifford surpassed expectations and earned one of the best starts of the pandemic era for a family film. The hybrid release of Clifford was one Paramount also used for Paw Patrol, which proved to be a huge hit for the studio.

While Clifford came in second place, Dune stayed in the top three after earning $5.5 million. The film has amassed $93.1 million at the domestic box office thus far and looks on track to cross $100 million this week.

Eternals is playing exclusively in theaters, while Dune is in theaters and available on HBO Max.

  • ‘Eternals’ Faces Harsh Drop But Still Eyeing Top Spot With $28M+ in its Second Weekend

‘Eternals’ Faces Harsh Drop But Still Eyeing Top Spot With $28M+ in its Second Weekend

Eternals‘ box office has been a highly debated discussion due to the film’s mixed critical reception. While it was behind expectations, it still managed to nab the fourth-highest domestic opening of 2021 with $71M. Of course, the first weekend is where any film builds its momentum and the question is how strong it can keep that top spot in the coming weeks. Well, it looks like the Friday numbers are in and the film faced a drop similar to Venom: Let There Be Carnage. The drop is around 75% that is a far cry from Shang-Chi‘s 67%. Still, it’ll very likely pass the $100M mark once the weekend is over.

Eternals will take the top spot again in its second weekend, which is still a strong showing. What should be highlighted is that this film might not have strong legs as other projects, its international numbers may be giving it an additional boost. The numbers are also developing similarly to how July was right as the pandemic was only starting to slow down. The box office generally has a few milestones for various franchises, such as Dune also passing the $100M mark and the Venom sequel getting to $200M.

Clifford the Big Red Dog will take the second spot but won’t give the latest Marvel Studios film much competition. It’s also been facing harsher critical reception but is doing better with audiences as a fun film for families to check out. So, it might be a quieter week but it’s very likely that Eternals will be dethroned once Ghostbusters: Afterlife releases next week.
