Quentin Tarantino’s Long History With Comic Book Movies

Quentin Tarantino, the acclaimed creative behind indie megahits like Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, has been on a bit of a tear lately in regards to superhero cinema. A recent interview with the Los Angeles Times saw the director call filmmakers who work with Marvel Studios “hired hands“, and claim that modern auteurs like himself “can’t wait” for comic book movies to fail. Not long after, Tarantino continued his tirade to imply companies like Marvel Studios had killed the “movie star”, effectively making characters more famous than the actors who play them.

This is, of course, not a surprising stance for the famously old-fashioned talent to take, but it is unexpectedly harsh for someone with a long history of almost working on comic-based projects. Throughout his career, Tarantino has been attached to four separate superhero adaptations and has admitted to using comic-adjacent concepts as the basis for some of his released projects. Kill Bill, one of Tarantino’s seminal works, famously includes a comic-inspired monologue, and the director is known to have rows of superhero books stored in his home. He even recently revealed that Inglorious Basterds, another fan favorite from his resume, was heavily inspired by Marvel’s Howling Commandos line from the 1940s.

For what it’s worth, Tarantino does not seem to despise the idea of adapting comics. He once said that, in his 20s, the idea of making films based on his favorite superheroes was all he wanted to do, but that he’d since “grown out” of that phase and moved on to focusing on original concepts. It would appear that his true qualms with superhero adaptations stem more from their unexpected impact on the film industry, and his perception that they’re produced at a high rate with low quality. As such, it’s intriguing to look back on the films his name was once attached to, and ponder what could have been different in a world where Tarantino was among those who had left their mark on the history of superhero cinema.

    Luke Cage: Hero For Hire

Perhaps the closest Tarantino ever came to actually making a Marvel movie. The Jackie Brown filmmaker spoke with MTV in 2013 and dropped the bombshell he had once actively attempted to get a Luke Cage: Hero For Hire film off the ground. He claimed the idea for the project came very early in his career after he completed production on his directorial debut, Reservoir Dogs. That puts Tarantino’s pitch somewhere around 1992, nearly a decade before BladeSpider-Man, and X-Men put comic book movies back on the map, and a lifetime before Netflix’s Luke Cage series made the character a household name. At the time, Marvel Studios had not yet been created, so Cage’s film rights were among the countless of their kind being bounced from company to company. As it turns out, however, Tarantino nailed down their then-owner, and a potential star, in a strong effort to get Hero For Hire made:

After ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ I had considered doing a ‘Luke Cage: Hero For Hire‘ movie. Ed Pressmanowned it at that time and we talked about it. And I talked with Larry Fishburne about being Luke Cage and he really liked  that idea.

    Quentin Tarantino

In the same interview, Tarantino explained that Hero For Hire fell by the wayside when the idea for Pulp Fiction grabbed his attention. As time continued to slip by, Hero For Hire suffered a quiet creative death. Much later, in a 2020 podcast interview, Tarantino added that some of his geekier pals were to blame for the Luke Cage film’s demise. Apparently, they felt dramatic actor Laurence Fishburne was not suited for the title role and had pestered Tarantino about casting action star Wesley Snipes instead. Never a fan of being told what to do, the director said this back-and-forth “ruined the whole damn thing”, despite Cage being his “absolute hero” at the time. Ultimately, Tarantino said he felt like he “made the right choice” in committing to Pulp Fiction as his second feature.

    Silver Surfer

Around the same time, after Reservoir Dogs and before Pulp FictionTarantino is reported to have written a full-blown script for a film based on Marvel’s cosmic mascot, the Silver Surfer. What’s more, he supposedly brought the script to German studio Constantin Film, who owned the rights at that point. In the early 90s, several creatives saw the immense potential in a Silver Surfer adaptation, but most studios – Marvel included – felt there was no money to be made in Silver Surfer on the big screen. The visual effects required to bring a movie like that to life were considered too expensive, and as a result, every attempt to develop a cohesive film was shot down. This, unfortunately, included Tarantino’s treatment, which was supposedly around 500 pages long.

    Green Lantern & Iron Man

Years later, after superhero films had gained steam but prior to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s emergence, Tarantino was offered two separate major adaptations from big-name studios. Green Lantern and Iron Man, both in varying stages of development in the late 2000s, were pitched to the Django Unchained director by their respective producers as his first tentpole picture. Obviously, he passed on both. While Tarantino has never publicly commented on his opportunity to bring Iron Man to life, which came at a time before the involvement of Robert Downey Jr. or any of the factors that eventually made it a huge hit, it likely came to him in a scenario similar to what he described for Green Lantern:

I was offered the ‘Green Lantern’. Not since it’s been a script, but just like, ‘Hey we own the ‘Green Lantern.’ Would you like it?’

    Quentin Tarantino

Again speaking to MTV, Tarantino conceded that, by the time Green Lantern and Iron Man arrived at his door, he had fully grown past his phase of wanting to adapt other people’s material. He elaborated, saying if he were to ever make a superhero film, it would have to be something entirely of his own design:

It wouldn’t be an existing comic book character. I’m a writer. I’d want to use my imagination and not have to fight with geeks’ memories of how this character should be and, ‘Oh, I cast an actor as opposed to a bodybuilder’ or it’s not as good as the way Neal Adams drew him.’ If I were to do something like that, I would want the fun of coming up with the superhero myself.

    Quentin Tarantino

With only one film left in his 10-film career plan, Tarantino will likely never make a superhero movie. Unless, of course, he decided he wanted to contribute to the trend, and use his imagination to show the current crop of directors how he thinks it should be done.

  • ‘Green Lantern:’ HBO Max Series Being Redeveloped to Focus on John Stewart

‘Green Lantern:’ HBO Max Series Being Redeveloped to Focus on John Stewart

HBO Max is looking to redevelop its previously announced Green Lantern series. The show, which hailed from producer Greg Berlanti and writer Seth Grahame-Smith, was originally set to star Finn Wittrock (Ratched) and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as the respective Green Lanterns. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new series will instead turn the focus over to John Stewart, one of DC’s first black superheroes.

Grahame-Smith has since departed the project after turning in eight scripts for the original series pitch. He was meant to serve as the showrunner on the project but ultimately chose to leave following the regime changes at HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television and DC Comics. A new showrunner has yet to be revealed. The decision to redevelop the series was reportedly made after Walter Hamada‘s recent exit, as prior to his exit, the use of John Stewart was said to be off-limits.

With the series being overhauled, only Berlanti and his banner, Berlanti Productions, remain attached through Warner Bros. Television. Per THR, Marc Guggenheim, who was originally involved with the series, left before the series was initially retooled. It is of note that this overhaul of the series does not stem from the massive changes underway at DC and DC Studios as James Gunn and Peter Safran do not begin their new jobs until Nov. 1st.

The Green Lantern series is now back in early development and is expected to be developed at a slower pace than the original series, which was being fast-tracked last year.

  • Development Has Been Halted on ‘Static Shock’ and ‘Supergirl’

Development Has Been Halted on ‘Static Shock’ and ‘Supergirl’

Warner Bros. Discovery might be moving full-steam ahead with The Flash, however, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter suggests plenty of other DC projects have been shelved – at least temporarily.

In a new piece breaking down the status of projects in varying stages of development at Warner Bros. Discovery and DC, THR has suggested a slew of projects haven’t necessarily been canceled, but development has slowed. Per the outlet, Supergirl, Green Lantern Corps, Static Shock and a Superman film from writer Ta-Nehisi Coates have all seen their development come to a halt with no directors attached to any of the projects.

Reports that Supergirl hit a speed bump first surfaced last week, with Rolling Stone stating the Flash spinoff was no longer moving forward. This report from THR suggests the project isn’t necessarily canceled, but rather, not a priority at the moment. That could potentially change depending on how The Flash is received upon release next year. As for Static Shock and Coates’ Superman, this marks the first news regarding the projects since they were initially announced, so it’s not entirely surprising that development has stalled on both.

A Static Shock movie was first teased in August 2020 as part of DC’s FanDome event, with news coming a few months later that Michael B. Jordan would produce the project for Warner Bros. along with Reginald Hudlin on the film. The project looked to be gaining steam after hiring Randy McKinnon in March 2021 to pen the script. Unfortunately, that was the last bit of movement on the project since its initial announcement – the same goes for Coates’ Superman film with producer J.J. Abrams.

With Warner Bros. Discovery viewing Superman as a viable franchise for its DC brand, it remains to be seen whether or not the studio opts to bring back Henry Cavill or opt to introduce a brand-new Man of Steel. Either way, it seems likely Superman will fly again, it just remains to be seen which Superman it’ll be.

  • DC’s HBO Max Future Uncertain, ‘Batgirl’ Likely Heading to Theatrical Release

DC’s HBO Max Future Uncertain, ‘Batgirl’ Likely Heading to Theatrical Release

The Wonder Twins have met an early demise as the new leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to shake things up and set the DC Extended Universe on a clearer path. It seems the twins may have just been the first of many causalities going by a recent statement.

The new leadership, led by David Zaslav, is reportedly placing a mandate that states all DC films should be set as theatrical releases as their first goal. This decision stems from the budgets many of these films have with Zaslav using Wonder Twins‘ $75 million as an example. They don’t see that kind of investment viable with a good return with a release on HBO Max. This would mean that a film like Batgirl, which is still set to release on HBO Max could instead see a shift from the streamer to a wide theatrical release.

The Hollywood Reporter also states that sources have told them that a lot of things that are being developed by Warner Bros. are likely going to be scrapped and never see the light of day. It seems the Green Lantern series may be in danger as it’s hit multiple delays in production and could exceed the budget granted to projects on the streamer. The bright side could see the film finally get some steam behind it and the long-awaited return of a character like Hal Jordan could become a possibility.

It may be a while before we know exactly what is happening with the DC Extended Universe and many of the other projects in development. While things may seem uncertain it could lead to a much smoother March forward for the franchise.

  • Wayne T. Carr Shares First High-Res Look at His Green Lantern for Zack Snyder’s ‘Justice League’

Wayne T. Carr Shares First High-Res Look at His Green Lantern for Zack Snyder’s ‘Justice League’

Back in May of 2021, we got our first look at Wayne T. Carr as the Green Lantern that Zack Snyder originally envisioned for his Justice League film. Sadly, it didn’t even make its way into the HBO Max special he was able to make, as Warner Bros. wouldn’t let him use the character. He only offered a shot of what could’ve been through his phone, but on the one-year anniversary, actor Wayne T. Carr just shared a high-res look at him in the costume offering the best look yet at what could’ve been. Not only that, but he is also continuing the “Restore the SnyderVerse” movement hoping to see the two planned sequels see the light of day, or maybe just the brightest day.

It’s a nice touch for the first-year anniversary and it really is a shame we didn’t get to see his version of the character. The design looks great, and the symbol floating above the chest piece has been a personal favorite addition to their design. So, it’s great seeing it in live-action. Warner Bros. is still working on a live-action series and film focused on the Green Lantern Corps, but the project has gone cold quite some time ago. For now, we’re still waiting for an official announcement as it’s mostly just been rumored.

  • Top 5 Candidates For The New Justice League

Top 5 Candidates For The New Justice League

Recent rumors have sent fans of the DCEU into a bit of a crisis, pun intended. At the center of recent controversy is the fate of the Justice League within the shared universe and just what the team roster will look like in future appearances. Luckily the DC Extended Universe continues to grow and offers plenty of prime candidates who’ve joined the team in the pages of the comics and could eventually become a member in live-action.

    Honorable Mention: Hawkgirl

The only reason Hawkgirl did not make the actual list is due to the uncertainness surrounding the character in the DCEU. The existence of Carter Hall, aka Hawkman, would point to Shiera Sanders Hall existing somewhere within the greater DC Universe. The character is a current member of the Infinite Frontier Justice League line-up and played a prominent role in the Justice League The Animated Series in which she was quite the fan-favorite character.

    5. Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz

Both cuts of Justice League confirm that Green Lanterns do indeed exist in the DCEU however the corps has been AWOL and yet to make an appearance in the present day. Both Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz will make their live-action debuts in the upcoming Green Lantern series on HBO Max, and while the status of the series canonicity in the DCEU is still up in the air, the two would make great additions to the league. The pair joined the league in the place of Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart upon the beginning of DC’s Rebirth storyline and have been present in the DC Universe ever since.

    4. Shazam

Billy Batson is probably one of the most beloved characters in the DCEU with one of the best films; of course, he’s a viable candidate for the Justice League, especially with how the Shazam! ended. Rumors surrounding the future of the team state that he could very well indeed be one of the newest members. The character has been a come-and-go member of the team since the launch of the New 52 and has been a popular addition ever since.

    3. Zatanna

Zatanna is in a similar situation to Hawkgirl, but we actually know for a fact that the character is coming with a solo film in the works from academy award-winning screenwriter Emerald Fennel. While the character will most likely be a member of the Justice League Dark, this doesn’t exactly keep her from the Justice League. If Constantine leads the JLD and Doctor Fate represents magic on the JSA, Zatanna should have a place on the JL as she’s quite a powerful magic user and the league lacks someone that specializes in that.

    2. Martian Manhunter

A character who was there at the very beginning, Martian Manhunter is a founding member of the Justice League and should be a member of the team. He possesses a variety of different abilities and powers that make him worthy of a spot on the team. In recent years, the character has taken a bit of a backseat, with Cyborg taking his spot on the team when the New 52 came around. The character was only revealed to exist and be General Swanwick in Zack Snyder’s Justice League which isn’t technically canon to the mainline DCEU, but the character could still find a place in the DCEU and on the League in a post-Flash universe.

    1. Black Canary

Jurnee Smollett’s debut as Dinah Lance in Birds of Prey was praised by fans for her portrayal of the character, and people instantly craved more of the character. Jurnee is set to return as the character in her own solo film, as well as rumored to appear in Batgirl. The character is usually seen on the team alongside Green Arrow, who has yet to make an appearance in the DCEU, but existence is sure due to a graphic image featuring Lexcorps corporate rivals listing Queen Industries. What we’ve seen from Dinah so far has proved she can hold her own and harnesses a killer canary cry. With Jurnee wracking up a few more appearances and quickly becoming a prominent character in the DCEU, a spot on the league is what she deserves.

The DC universe is vast and full of plenty of diverse and beloved characters and while things may feel familiar it’s also important to welcome a bit of change. The Justice League is a team that’s gone back decades and featured an ever-expanding and transitioning roster of characters so these additions wouldn’t feel out of the ordinary.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Diane Guerrero Open to Voice Green Lantern Jessica Cruz Again

EXCLUSIVE: Diane Guerrero Open to Voice Green Lantern Jessica Cruz Again

Disney’s 60th animated film, Encanto, is set to release in the United States on November 24th. The film features an all-star cast and star Diane Guerrero couldn’t be more excited to be part of the animated family. She sat down to discuss her big role in the newest Lin-Manuel Miranda musical for an exclusive interview with myself and Murphy’s Multiverse. During our conversation, many of her previous roles doing voice work were brought up in relation to her latest film.

This included her time bringing Jessica Cruz, one of DC Comics’ many Green Lanterns, to life in 2019’s animated movie Justice League vs. the Fatal Five, which is quite different from a Disney animated project. When asked what it was like to do voice work on a smaller, direct-to-video scale compared to her recent experience making a massive, big-budget Disney project, the former Superior Donuts actress revealed her deep, general love of animation as a storytelling format:

It was still a dream come true for me because I love animation. I really, really, really…y’know, when I got into this work, early on, I was like: ‘I want to voice cartoons, I want to do animation’. I’m just such a big fan, y’know? I watched it, I relate to it, I really enjoy the visuals, and that kind of storytelling.

    Diane Guerrero

Of course, I couldn’t let Guerrero go without asking if that meant she’d be willing to return as the voice of Jessica Cruz in the future. Her response was quite ecstatic, as she repeatedly highlighted she’d love to return to voice the role once again.

Oh my God, I would love it. I would love it. I love that character.

    Diane Guerrero

Hopefully, this means we haven’t seen the last of Diane Guerrero lending her wonderful talent to animated characters. Perhaps this will even allow her to take on more comic book roles in the near future. Until then, you can take the whole family to enjoy Encanto in theaters later this month.

  • RUMOR: Tobias Menzies to Play Sinestro in HBO Max’s ‘Green Lantern’ Series

RUMOR: Tobias Menzies to Play Sinestro in HBO Max’s ‘Green Lantern’ Series

All the way back in 2011, Green Lantern released in theaters to less than stellar reviews and amounted to a dismal box office haul. What’s most memorable about that movie is its ending, in which we see Thaal Sinestro, one of their strongest warriors, succumb to the newly forged yellow lantern ring. The ring was forged to face Parallax but was deemed too dangerous. Sinestro’s origins have always followed down this dark path, going from one of the galaxies’ strongest warriors to one of its darkest foes. With the upcoming HBO Max series developing this sprawling story over time, it’ll be interesting to see the rise and fall of this once great hero in the DC Universe in live-action once again. It looks like we might get to revisit this storyline sooner than expected

A few months back we reported on Sinestro’s inclusion in the series, with him being described as a “strategic commander” a “warrior monk” and one of the “greatest lanterns of all time”. In a new rumor from the Illuminerdi, they’re reporting that actor Tobias Menzies will now bring the DC villain to life in the series. He is well-known for his roles in Game of Thrones, Rome, and The Crown. It’s unclear how big of a role Sinestro could be playing in the series or what time period he would be showing up in, as the show is set to sprawl the 40s, 80s, and modern-day.

Menzies would be joining Jeremy Irvine and Finn Wittrock, both previously cast in the series as Alan Scott and Guy Gardner. The series is set to be written by Marc Guggenheim and Seth Grahame-Smith while being produced by Greg Berlanti, adding yet another major DC Series under his belt. Green Lantern currently has no set release date but will release exclusively on the HBO Max streaming service.

  • RUMOR: ‘Superman and Lois’ Director Lee Toland Krieger to Direct ‘Green Lantern’ Pilot

RUMOR: ‘Superman and Lois’ Director Lee Toland Krieger to Direct ‘Green Lantern’ Pilot

DC’s Green Lantern Corp has had a rough go of it ever since the live-action film hit screens all the way back in 2011. The big-budget film had hopes of spawning a franchise but got met with dismal reviews and flopped at the Box Office. It seemed like the Lanterns’ time on the screen has already passed. There were only bits of news teasing a new film. It all ended when DC announced that HBO Max began development on a series. It would span decades within the DC Universe, featuring Green Lanterns from across the DC Universe. The first castings found their way online and now we have our first tease of the production team.

A new report states that the series may already be assembling directors for the first season. The Direct reports that Lee Toland Krieger, who previously worked on CW’s Superman and Lois, has been tapped to helm the pilot of the upcoming series. He also is lined up for more episodes. Having someone whose previous works within the DC universe is reassuring for fans, especially as Superman and Lois wowed so many fans with its cinematography on a limited budget to bring the Man of Tomorrow to the small screen.

Green Lantern currently has no release date but will release exclusively on HBO Max. The series will span decades highlighting lanterns in each setting like Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Sinestro, and recently cast Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner and Jeremy Irvine as Alan Scott.

  • REPORT: HBO Max’s ‘Green Lantern’ Eyeing Jeremy Irvine as Alan Scott

REPORT: HBO Max’s ‘Green Lantern’ Eyeing Jeremy Irvine as Alan Scott

It looks like Green Lantern is all the rage again. Just recently, Zack Snyder revealed the first image of his original vision of Wayne T. Carr as John Stewart. Sadly, his original vision got cut by Warner Bros. and he gave a stronger focus on Martian Manhunter. Still, it doesn’t mean that the strong-willed galactic peace force won’t be seen again. DC and HBO Max have major plans for them, as a series is in development that will explore the various timelines and members of the space cops. It looks like the next casting is just around the corner, as Illuminerdi is reporting that HBO Max is eyeing Jeremy Irvine to play Alan Scott.

He doesn’t have the role yet, but he seems to be their preferred candidate. Illuminerdi also found out that it is pitched as a one-year deal unlike his future co-star Finn Wittrock, who was recently cast as Guy Gardner. Now, this doesn’t spell the end for the character but rather Irvine‘s version. In the comics, people commonly look at Scott as a veteran superhero holding the mantle of Green Lantern. There is a chance that we are introduced to a younger version in the first season and he is aged up in future entries. The series will span multiple histories and characters. We have no idea how long Alan Scott will be on-screen, as his story may act as a prelude for the rest of the season. Hopefully, we’ll get more details as official castings are announced.
