  • Leslie Grace Already Reached Out To Some of Her DCEU Co-Stars

Leslie Grace Already Reached Out To Some of Her DCEU Co-Stars

Being in a shared universe of films and television series can be exciting when there’s just potential for many fan-favorite characters to interact and simply co-exist alongside each other. Over the past few years, the DC Extended Universe has confirmed many new characters like Blue Beetle, Supergirl, Static Shock, and Batgirl are set to join the shared universe. Yet, it seems like Batgirl herself has already got a jump on bringing those worlds together.

Variety recently spoke with Leslie Grace who gushed about all her excitement about the upcoming Batgirl solo film. The interviewer asked if she’d reached out to any other actors like Gal Gadot or Alicia Silverstone, Grace said she didn’t but did confirm she reached out to Sasha Calle and Xolo Mariduena.

I did reach out to Sasha Calle, who is Supergirl in “The Flash.” I’m hoping that we get to meet soon because we’re part of the new gen. I did reach out to Xolo Mariduena, our Blue Beetle. He is freaking awesome. I’m so happy for him.

It’s fun to see Grace so passionate about the character and the ones she could one day share the screen with. Many are already awaiting the team-up between Supergirl and Batgirl, for what will be yet another first for DC live-action.

Leslie Grace Talks ‘Batgirl’ Story and Teases Sequel

Fans are eager to see the debut of Leslie Grace as the DCEU’s Barbara Gordon as production on the HBO Max film wrapped just recently. The story is seemingly taking a lot of inspiration from the Batgirl: Year One storyline, one of the characters best and most popular stories detailing her early days and how she became the hero we love today. Yet, a new interview may hint that there could already be plans for Grace to reprise her role as Batgirl as it seems a sequel is already in the cards.

Variety recently caught up with Batgirl star Leslie Grace promoting her new brand partnership and quickly began talking about her upcoming debut as the titular hero. The interviewer jokingly asked Grace when she was getting to work on the sequel and her answer seems to hint that ideas for the potential film are already in the works.

We got to see this first one first. But there’s definitely some talks about what it could be. I’ve seen some of what we’ve shot, obviously in the playback and stuff like that, and it’s insane. We’ve already been talking about where do we take this from here because there’s so much that happens in this film. There are a lot of different themes in the plot that we touch on. It’s not just the action. There’s a love story. There’s this father-daughter relationship. There’s looking at the world through a lens that isn’t just black and white and seeing the color and the spectrum between things.

    Leslie Grace

While we currently do not have a set release date for Batgirl we’re still getting excited for it. Barbara and her fathers relationship is something so important to the character and we can’t wait to see it explored in the film, especially with the return of J.K. Simmons.

  • Leslie Grace on Working With Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons in ‘Batgirl’

Leslie Grace on Working With Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons in ‘Batgirl’

The Flash is set to see the return of Michael Keaton into one of his most iconic roles, reprising Batman for the first time since Batman: Returns. For those that grew up with his version of the character, he is the Batman they grew up with. In Batgirl, he’ll also be joined by J.K. Simmons, reprising his Justice League role as Commissioner Gordon in what seems to be a new universe where they both co-exist.

The upcoming HBO Max film will see Leslie Grace take on the role of Barbara Gordon, as she becomes Gotham’s newest vigilante all on her own. Variety recently chatted with Grace in which she dished out how exciting it was to work with such legendary actors.

It was wild for everyone. Our directors were like two little kids. They’re legit Batman nerds openly. He’s Batman, man! I couldn’t even believe that I was sharing space with Batman. I want to say more, but I can’t. It was insane, surreal, incredible. It was the stuff of dreams really. It was insane, surreal, incredible. It was the stuff of dreams really. And J.K. Simmons playing my dad. That’s my pop. I was so nervous because all I could hear in my head was his voice in “Whiplash.” Like what would he do and say if I didn’t get something right?. then we became the best of friends. And he just told me all his great stories of starting out and being a waiter and working in a pizza shop and trying to be an actor and doing theater.

    Leslie Grace

Working with such influential actors seems incredibly intimidating but it’s nice to see they were quite welcoming to Grace as she is a relative newcomer to acting. Batgirl currently has no set release date but had already wrapped filming.

  • ‘Dead Boy Detectives’ Series Moving Forward at HBO Max

‘Dead Boy Detectives’ Series Moving Forward at HBO Max

DC comics continue to find a home with HBO Max. The major streaming service has decided to move forward with a new series based on Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner’s Dead Boy Detectives. Set to be adapted by The Flight Attendant creator Steve Yockey, the show is described as “a fresh take on a ghost story that explores loss, grief, and death through the lens of [the undead] Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland… and their very alive friend, Crystal Palace. It’s a lot like a vintage detective series — only darker and on acid.” The title characters will be portrayed by George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri, with Kassius Nelson playing Crystal. Yuyu KitamuraJenn Lyon, and Briana Cuoco are also part of the cast, with Ruth Connell reprising her role as Night Nurse from Doom Patrol.

Dead Boy Detectives will be produced by Berlanti Productions, their second collaboration with Yockey. The showrunner had the following to say in regards to the series getting the go-ahead:

I’ve been obsessed with this comic for a long time, so it’s a true passion project. And Jeremy, Berlanti Productions, DC, WBTV, HBO Max — they’re all encouraging me to run with every wild, bizarre, and unsettling choice. The result is going to be really dark fun.

    Steve Yockey

HBO Max’s head of original content, Sarah Aubrey, added:

We are excited to be expanding further into the DC Universe with Steve, Jeremy [Carver] and the Berlanti team with this thrilling new spin on a detective series. We were fascinated by the world of the Dead Boy Detectives that Steve and Jeremy first introduced in Doom Patrol and cannot wait to follow the supernatural sleuths in the lurid mysteries to come.

    Sarah Aubrey

As stated in the quotes, the Dead Boy Detectives characters previously made their live-action debuts in HBO’s fan favorite series Doom Patrol. Here’s hoping the new show finds just as much success as it’s predecessor.

  • DC’s ‘Titans’ Leaked Set Photos Offer First Look at Jinx

DC’s ‘Titans’ Leaked Set Photos Offer First Look at Jinx

We just ran the first real set photo we got from the cast of DC’s Titans, which revealed that the upcoming season is very likely adapting the iconic White Raven storyline from the animated Teen Titans series and comic books with a twist. It looks like that isn’t the only element they are carrying over from the animated adaptation, as a new set photo offers our first look at the HBO Max show’s version of Jinx.

In one of the set photos, we can see actress Lisa Ambalavanar with a familiar hairstyle for those that followed the Cartoon Network animated series. With purple hair and some black stripes, they clearly took inspiration from the Teen Titans when bringing the character to life in the HBO Max series if the set photo provided by @seansmovies (as shared by @DCTBMidias) is anything to go by.

It certainly looks like they took inspiration from the animated design, but similar to what they did with Raven, they didn’t change her skin tone. We don’t know yet how they might adapt her abilities, as the animated show gave it a special purple spark to let people know she’s used the ability. So, here’s hoping the first trailer gives us a first look.

  • Leaked ‘Titans’ Set Photo Features White-Haired Raven

Leaked ‘Titans’ Set Photo Features White-Haired Raven

It looks like the upcoming fourth season of DC’s Titans will feature an iconic transformation for Teagan Croft‘s Raven. Fans of the original animated Teen Titans series might remember that when Raven confronted her father Trigon, she would embrace her purest energy to take on the representation of evil. This transformation led to the costume turning white. Well, it seems that the upcoming season of the HBO Max series will do something similar but this time around her hair will change.

It’s certainly a surprising reveal, but a new set photo from @seansmovies (as shared by @DCTBMidias) offers a look at a few of the actors of Titans. In it, we can clearly see Croft with a very different hairstyle. It’s gone completely white which would hint at her potentially going through a similar storyline in the upcoming season.

It’s a curious direction to take, especially as we already had a Trigon-focused storyline in the first season. Either they might build upon it, or her abilities are pushed to their limits in a new way. Brother Blood has been cast for the upcoming season and is likely its main villain. So, perhaps he is someone who worships Trigon and is trying to find a way to unleash him on the world. We’ll see if the trailer gives us our first look on what may end up being the cause for her transformation.

  • Salma Hayek Takes Over as Thandiwe Newton Exits ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’

Salma Hayek Takes Over as Thandiwe Newton Exits ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’

There’s been a shift with the upcoming Magic Mike sequel, as Deadline has just reported that Channing Tatum‘s latest entry for HBO Max will see the addition of Salma Hayek. She will replace Thandiwe Newton who had to leave the project due to personal reasons. A public statement was done by Warner Bros. spokesperson on her exit.

Thandiwe Newton has made the difficult decision to step away from the production of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance to deal with family matters.

The upcoming HBO Ma film has been currently in production in London with Steven Soderbergh returning in the director’s chair after taking on the first film. It’ll be based on a script by Reid Carolyn. Director of the 2015 sequel Magic Mike XXL, Gregory Jacobs, is also on board but this time in a producing role alongside Nick Wechsler and Peter Kiernan.

The films were quite the box office success and even managed to spawn a stage show simply titled Magic Mike Live. It’s unclear if the upcoming film will take any inspiration from it, as the story still remains tightly under wraps. It also seems like this will be the final entry in the franchise, especially with Last Dance being quite prominent in the title. So, we’ll see how it’ll bring the story together.

  • HBO Max Brasil Announces ‘The Batman’s Release for Next Week

HBO Max Brasil Announces ‘The Batman’s Release for Next Week

Even before The Batman hit theaters, there was the word making the rounds that under HBO Max’s new deal, the film would release at some point in April. It was hinted at that it might be within the 45-day window and would eventually get confirmed. Now, HBO Max Brasil has taken to its official Twitter account to announce that The Batman will hit its streaming service for no additional cost as of April 18th.

While the US account has yet to tweet the announcement, it does seem likely that it’ll release worldwide on the same date. It also coincides with the overall digital release that was planned for that time window. It’ll definitely cut into the film’s overall performance and maybe halt it from reaching the $800M it was currently building up to.

Still, this is a big win for those that haven’t had the chance to visit theaters, as the pandemic is still an issue worldwide. Plus, those that are a bit hesitant about sitting through a 3-hour film might now have their chance to break it up into pieces for their viewing comfort.

With the expansion of Matt Reeves‘ Batman-Verse moving forward on the service, it also makes sense they’d want to make it it’s permanent home moving forward. It’ll be interesting to see if it picks up a large audience when it hits the streamer just like The Suicide Squad did during its initial release. Here’s hoping that we’ll also get more announcements for the untitled Penguin-focused series to build up on the momentum.

  • Charlize Theron to Adapt Aqualad’s ‘You Brought Me The Ocean’ Graphic Novel as an HBO Max Series

Charlize Theron to Adapt Aqualad’s ‘You Brought Me The Ocean’ Graphic Novel as an HBO Max Series

Back in 2020, DC Comics released You Brought Me The Ocean, a young adult graphic novel following Jake Hyde. The book was written by Alex Sanchez with Julie Maroh providing illustrations. The story followed Jake after the death of his father, who wants to get out of New Mexico to attend college on the coast. The thing is, Jake has these mysterious tattoos that begin to glow every time he touches the water, leading him to search for more answers to his true identity.

The graphic novel seems to have found a fan in Charlize Theron, who will serve as a producer on the adaption of the story for HBO Max. It will tell the origin of Jackson Hyde, a gay teenager living in New Mexico as his strange connection to water sets up his future as Aqualad. He has to juggle all this while falling for his classmate, Kenny Liu, captain of the swim team. There are currently no writers or directors attached. A.J. Dix, Beth Kono, and Andrew Haas serve as executive producers via Denver and Delilah Films.

There’s no word on if this series will be set within the mainline DC Extended Universe. Jackson Hyde is currently playing a big role in DC Comics, as the second Aquaman and member of the new Justice League following the death of the current incarnation in Justice League #75. For those interested in getting to know Jackson Hyde, they should check out You Brought Me The Ocean alongside the six-issue mini-series Aquaman: The Becoming, a good place to start for those curious.

  • Robert Downey Jr.’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Expanding With 2 New HBO Max Series

Robert Downey Jr.’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Expanding With 2 New HBO Max Series

We’ve all been anxiously awaiting any news on the third entry of Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes franchise. There were hints that they were preparing to work on the sequel yet it looks like they are taking a different approach. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that HBO Max is working on not just one but two television series based on the franchise based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s books. Downey is executive producing through his Team Downey banner. Lionel Wigram, who helped write the first film, is also on board in a similar role.

Keep in mind, that there’s no confirmation that Downey Jr. will also return in the role of Sherlock. These projects are in early development, and it’s unclear if they’ll simply take place in the same universe that the Sherlock Holmes films introduced. These series also fall under Team Downey’s overall deal with HBO.

Here’s hoping that they keep some of the best elements from the films, such as the iconic soundtrack. It’s not the only Sherlock Holmes-focused series as Benedict Cumberbatch famously played the character for BBC’s series simply titled Sherlock. Plus, Enola Holmes has become a new franchise hit for Netflix. Perhaps we’re seeing a renaissance for these projects.
