  • ‘Multiverse of Madness’, ‘Love and Thunder’ Top Fandango’s Most Anticipated List

‘Multiverse of Madness’, ‘Love and Thunder’ Top Fandango’s Most Anticipated List

While Summer isn’t exactly just around the corner, the Summer movie season is and 2022 is shaping up to be quite the season. The long-awaited sequel to 1986’s Top Gun, another Jurassic Park film and the Buzz Lightyear origin story you didn’t know you needed are among the choices audiences will have this Summer, but according to a poll by Fandango, it’s a pair of Marvel Studios’ films that have audiences most excited.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 6th) and Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8th) were the top two choices in a poll that was voted on by over 6,000 moviegoers. Jurassic Park: Dominion and Top Gun: Maverick were right behind, followed by two animated films in Pixar’s Lightyear and Dreamworks’ Minions: The Rise of Gru. Elvis, Jordan Peele’s Nope, Bullet Train and Downton Abbey: A New Era rounded out the top 10, all of which should be incredibly successful at the box office.

Even in a Summer where Tom Cruise’s return as Maverick is in the cards, it’s not surprising to see two Marvel Studios’ projects top the list. The Doctor Strange sequel’s perceived connection to the story of the wildly successful Spider-Man: No Way Home has driven advance ticket sales; meanwhile, the mystery surrounding the fourth Thor film hasn’t taken away interest. Even as critics continue to pump out think pieces about superhero fatigue, superhero films still top the list for audiences.

  • New ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Merch May Confirm Mighty Thor’s Comic-Accurate Origin

New ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Merch May Confirm Mighty Thor’s Comic-Accurate Origin

When it was first announced that Natalie Portman would take on the role of Mighty Thor in the Thor: Love and Thunder, it not only had many cheering but also raised some questions. Given the heavy subject matter of her storyline in the comics, it did raise the question if the Marvel Cinematic Universe would also explore her battle with cancer. It seems that a new piece of merchandise may have given us the answer to that very question.

The Mighty Thor’s Helmet (Thor: Love and Thunder) Replica | Marvel Movie Museum

Eagle Moss shared a replica of Mighty Thor’s helmet. While the collector’s item already stands out on its own, what caught our eye was the description included. Not only does it give us our first glimpse into her storyline and how Mjolnir is restored, but also confirms that Jane Foster is suffering from cancer in the upcoming film. The description is as follows:

Suffering from cancer, astrophysicist and Thor’s ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster, visited New Asgard and her life was changed forever. Mysteriously, the broken pieces of Mjolnir, the hammer of the thunder god, transformed her into the Mighty Thor and gifted her the superpowers of Thor, to battle threats internal and external. Wielding Mjolnir herself, she had become a godly protector and a new hero was born!

So, it seems they are following the comic storyline quite closely. It does make you wonder how they’ll tackle it and how it may intertwine with Thor’s story of trying to retire from superhero-ing. Perhaps their paths cross and we uncover just what may have affected the growth inside her. Given that the Aether used her as its host, they may tie that storyline back to Thor: The Dark World and Thor takes a certain responsibility for what happened to her. Perhaps the next trailer offers a few more teases of how that plot line will come together, or even if they tease who is behind the mask.

  • Natalie Portman Shares a New Mighty Thor Variant of ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’s Poster

Natalie Portman Shares a New Mighty Thor Variant of ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’s Poster

The first trailer gave us a tease of what Thor: Love and Thunder has in store for us with a great poster highlighting the 80s inspiration of the film. Yet, the ending gave us our first look at Natalie Portman‘s return to the franchise as Mighty Thor. Surprisingly, the first poster mainly focused on Chris Hemsworth and it seems that Portman wanted to quickly correct that, as she shared a variant of the poster with her version of the character taking the central stage.

The best part is that it also switches up the tagline to “The One is Not the Only One” as a callout to the tagline of the original poster being “The One and Only.” It’s a fun way to tease her character, who only briefly appeared in the trailer at the end. We’re likely going to get a better look at her character and tease if Thor knows who’s behind the mask as more trailers arrive over time.

It’s a great marketing move to wait a bit before releasing this poster, as it builds upon the reveal of her return. Surprisingly, they kept her helmet out of this poster which makes you wonder just how much she’ll wear it throughout the film. Even Thor very rarely wears a helmet, as it mostly hides his face, but perhaps he got grabbed too often by the wings and was annoyed by it holding him back. Here’s hoping that the next trailer won’t take too long to release, especially as it’s already set to premiere in July.

  • Bruce Campbell Talks Marvel Studios Influence on ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Reshoots

Bruce Campbell Talks Marvel Studios Influence on ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Reshoots

We’ve heard a lot about the work that’s been done on the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. Multiverse of Madness will be filmed to the brim, as is expected with a project that explores the multiverse. We’ve heard that Spider-man: No Way Home was forced to change directions due to the pandemic and Marvel Studios had to reshuffle their schedules, but it looks like something similar happened to the upcoming Doctor Strange film.

In an interview with Game Informer, Bruce Campbell was asked a few questions which included the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There were many rumors about various reshoots being underway as they were building up to its release in a few weeks. While it’s not uncommon, he did offer some insight into what led to some of the changes, such as some story aspects needing to be adapted by Sam Raimi.

The Marvel guys, they make eight of these movies at the same time, so they’re always updating storylines. So, my buddy Sam [Raimi] has had to add scenes that [Marvel] told him he had to shoot, and he’s removed scenes that no longer apply. So until May rolls around I don’t think Benedict Cumberbatch even knows if he’s in this movie or not.

    Bruce Campbell

It’s not uncommon that executives have some influence on how productions follow, but Marvel Studios has the challenge of also keeping somewhat of continuity between their overarching storylines and connections from one project to another.

The pandemic, as mentioned previously, left them with quite the blow as more things ended up getting shuffled around and it seems Doctor Strange was affected as well. Of course, his reference to Benedict Cumberbatch not knowing if he’s in the film is more of a joke on how much work goes into these films and their many moving parts.

  • The History of Thor’s Armor in the MCU

The History of Thor’s Armor in the MCU

After several long weeks of anticipation, fans have finally gotten their first look at Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The new adventure, from returning director Taika Waititi, will take the God of Thunder through the farthest reaches of the galaxy, and more importantly, put him in a wide variety of new suits. In the span of just one brief teaser, Chris Hemsworth‘s noble protagonist is shown wearing at least seven new outfits. This may be the highest quantity of costume changes we’ve ever seen a Marvel hero pull off in a single film, except for maybe Iron Man 3, and many of the looks appear to be a far cry from the style Thor had when audiences first met him.

As such, it seems appropriate to take a walk back down memory lane and revisit every single armor the one-time Prince of Asgard has worn during his time in the MCU. From the first time, he raised the hammer in Thor to the last time he laid down the axe in Avengers: Endgame. Let’s get started:

Thor (2011) – the Mighty Thor

The armor that started it all. This look was heavily inspired by the suit designed for Thor’s 2007 comic reboot, created by Olivier Coipel, with chainmail sleeves covering Hemsworth‘s bulky arms and a striking red cape flowing down his back. At the time, it was the signature look associated with the character and made much more sense to adapt in live-action than Thor’s original over-the-top comic look. Kenneth Branagh made good use of the armor’s colored highlights, employing their vibrancy as a way of helping Thor stand out against golden backdrops and in the heat of Shakespearian conflicts. These exact threads have not been worn since his first movie outing, but they’re still some of the most iconic associated with the character.

The Avengers (2012) – Ultimate Thor

The next time we see Thor, in 2012’s monumental The Avengers, he’s wearing an armor notably similar to the one designed by Bryan Hitch for 2002’s The Ultimates. This look is a little sleeker than one may be accustomed to seeing in an Asgardian sport. It’s perhaps a little more “superhero-ish” than its predecessor, likely to help Thor fit in with his Earthly teammates. The suit removed the sleeves and cape and puts the focus on bulky wrist bands, darker red-streaked pants, and silver highlights. It even removes the famous discs from his torso in favor of flashier Asgardian details. Essentially leisure-wear for the God of Thunder.

The Avengers (2012) – Avenging Asgardian

Basically just an evolution of the earlier suit, this is the armor Thor wears after taking a beating from the Hulk and deciding he needs a little more protection for the incoming alien invasion. He summons his hammer and adds an extra layer to the Ultimate-inspired ensemble, bringing back the sleeves, cape, and discs, and adding a little more the wrist bracers. A cool mix of his 2011 and 2012 designs. Who knew hammers also double as a wardrobe summoning.

Thor: The Dark World (2014) – Game of Thor

2014’s Thor: The Dark World was received poorly by fans of the character, but it may have had one of the coolest Thor designs to date. Directed by Game of Thrones creative Alan Taylor, much of the costumes and sets created for the movie were reimagined to bring them away from the first film’s high-concept Shakespearean vibe and closer to the realm of gritty fantasy. As a result, Thor’s armor switched from glistening silver to stained gold, with a leather protective skirt, simplified braces, and added chainmail on the thighs. The color of his cape was also dimmed to match the Earth-colored backdrops of the installment. Other parts of the movie feature the armor without its sleeves or cape, but it’s otherwise the same look.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) – Ultimate Avenging Thor

Avengers: Age of Ultron infamously took Thor on a somewhat confusing, sidetracked journey away from his Earthly compatriots. However, it did serve up some cool garments with a design that seems to be a mix of all the looks that came before it. Sleeveless like The Avengers, silver, and red like Thor, with the leather skirt from The Dark World to tie everything together. Aside from switching into a fancy party suit, Thor basically maintains this look for the whole movie. Weirdly, the first time he goes without chainmail for a final battle.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017) – God of Thunder

The initial, less-famous armor worn by Thor in the fan-favorite Thor: Ragnarok. It draws heavy inspiration from the suit designed by Essad Ribic for 2012’s Thor: God of Thunder comic, with a much simpler wardrobe combination than viewers had seen the character wear at that point in the MCU. It looks to be mostly just a leather torso piece, with basic wrapped bracelets and a dark brown belt and chest strap. Thor wearing this into a conflict against the Fire Demon Surtur and the Goddess of Death Hela says a lot about how difficult he thought the task at hand would be.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017) – Sakaarian Gladiator

For the rest of the movie, Thor wears this now-iconic look inspired by the colorful early Marvel designs of Jack Kirby and the 2006 Planet Hulk aesthetic created by Carlo Pagulayan and Aaron Lopresti. A mish-mash of armor jumbled together from items found on the junk planet Sakaar, thrown over the torso piece Thor was wearing earlier in the film. This look also gets super extra bonus points for actually including a version of the character’s famed helmet, which he hadn’t worn since the first Thor and had never been seen being used in a fight.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017) & Avengers: Infinity War (2018) – Eyepatch Thor

Debuting in the post-credits scene of Thor: Ragnarok before becoming his main look for most of Avengers: Infinity War, this design features the beloved hero in all-black and with an eye patch. He’s rocking the eye patch because, of course, he lost an eye in the fight against Hela. Plus, the cool, dark color scheme of his armor is a good indicator of things to come. Nothing good happens to Thor while he’s adorned in these threads, but its further exploration of the Ultimates style in the MCU is something to admire.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) & Avengers: Endgame (2019) – Stormbreaker

A look that tells Thor fans something really cool is about to happen. Keeping with the all-black theme established in Infinity War, it’s a little heavier and battle-ready than the casual armor used for the galactic adventuring happening earlier in the movie. Even the iconic chainmail is turned black for Thor’s vengeful hunt for Thanos. It brings back the cape to show things are getting serious and features the hero wielding Stormbreaker for the first time. Those black discs light up blue as Thor achieves his full Godly potential for the Battle of Wakanda and the eventual death of his timeline’s Mad Titan.

Avengers: Endgame (2019) – Quantum Suit

The five-year time jump in Avengers: Endgame finds Thor depressed and having let himself go. He doesn’t wear any armor for a large chunk of the film, but he does put on the specialized Quantum Realm suit made for him by Tony Stark for interdimensional time travel. It acts as armor against the effects of the microscopic realm, so it gets the nod on this list.

Avengers: Endgame (2019) – Viking Thor

In the final battle for Earth, Thor puts on a new set of armor that more accurately reflects his new image. Looking like something of a Viking, the character’s new torso armor is rounded to fit his stomach, and flanked by warrior braids in both his hair and beard. It’s not that different from the black ensemble worn in the previous Avengers flick, just modified for the occasion. It still remains a memorable addition, especially as even in his condition he was keeping up quite the fight.

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) – Classic Thor

It’s only a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance, but the trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder do show a teenage Thor dressed in the classic Kirby design from his original comic outings. It’s ripped straight from the comics, and it’s beautiful. Marvel Studios continues its trend in Phase 4 of bringing back some more comic-accurate designs.

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) – Norse God

Another set of duds inspired by the legend Ribic, this is a sleeveless get-up Thor looks to be wearing in some sort of northern village. The fur around the shoulders is a nice touch to give the otherwise simple chest piece a bit of flare. This is presumably the look of a man who is learning that a bunch of other gods is being slaughtered. Maybe.

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) – Battle Armor

Last but not least is this cool, brightly colored, gold, and blue fit that was previously leaked via concept art. It appears to be inspired by the character’s enchanted “Battle Armor” from 1987’s The Mighty Thor #378, designed by Sal Buscema. We here at Murphy’s Multiverse have our own theories about the armor’s MCU origins, but only time will tell if they’re correct.

That completes our journey into the mystery. Oh wait, I meant to write a journey through Thor’s massive wardrobe. The character has had quite a few awesome outfits, and the trailer for Love and Thunder indicates he won’t stop outdoing his fellow Avengers anytime soon. Here’s hoping Thor’s MCU future continues to thrive, and fellow God of Thunder Jane Foster is able to keep up the tradition of battle-worthy attire.

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Merchandise Could Hint at Gorr’s Symbiote Connection

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Merchandise Could Hint at Gorr’s Symbiote Connection

After much anticipation from fans, the first trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder finally arrived, bringing us our very first look at Taika Waititi’s next adventure with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. The film will see Thor up against one of his most dangerous foes: Gorr the God Butcher, an alien that wields a powerful Necrosword and travels the universe killing gods. There’s still some uncertainty as to how the Marvel Cinematic Universe will adapt the character due to some legal issues regarding some aspects, but some merchandise may hint at some accurate origins.

Gorr lived a tragic life, having lost everyone he loved most in his life and came to believe that there were no gods. Gorr was proven wrong when he stumbled upon a battle between the elder god Knull and other god who begged Gorr for helped. Gorr, who was enraged that gods did exist and had let his family perish, bonded with Knull’s Necrosword known as All-Black and slayed the other god. All-Black was the first symbiote, created by Knull and used to behead a celestial whose head ultimately became Knowhere.

Check Out Christian Bale's Gorr in 'Thor: Love and Thunder' Legends Figures | The Mary Sue

All-Black left Knull and bonded with Gorr, allowing him to travel the universe slaying gods with the symbiote blade. This is where those pesky legal issues come in because as we all know, the film rights to the symbiotes and everything else pertaining to Spider-Man belong to Sony, making it very difficult to continue that connection between Gorr and Knull. Marvel Studios has run into these issues before. For Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2, the studio made a deal with Fox that allowed them to use Ego.

Some new merchandise may hint that Gorr could still be wielding All-Black and that there could indeed still be symbiotes somewhere in the MCU. A new Funko POP! for the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder wave of figures shows Gorr wielding a sword and levitating via some sort of black liquid substance which looks very similar to how symbiotes are traditionally depicted.

Gorr Pop!, Thor: Love and Thunder

It still remains unknown just what exactly Gorr is wielding, but it must have some connection to what’s beneath the figure. The only details we have on his weapon are from the back of Marvel Legends figure for the character only describing it as “A strange and terrifying weapon.” It’s entirely possible that Marvel and Sony have worked out a deal to allow for the story of the symbiotes, continuing on their multiversal story begun in Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw a piece of a symbiote left in the MCU. Could Gorr be working with something similar? We may not have answers until Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8th!

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Fatigues to 200M+ Views Within 24 Hours

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Fatigues to 200M+ Views Within 24 Hours

Marvel Studios has fatigued its way to another winner, as Thor: Love and Thunder managed to pull in 209M views within just 24 hours. That is quite an impressive accomplishment considering this is the fourth entry in the Thor franchise with only the two latest Avenger films and Spider-Man: No Way Home ahead of it. It was already quite impressive when No Way Home pulled in the most viewers within recording time with 355.5M while Avengers: Endgame stood at 289M.

The last pre-pandemic film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, managed to pull in a billion at the box office with around 135M views within the first 24-hours. So, Love and Thunder is going in strong, especially with how late the trailer was released when compared to other titles. The film holds the record for the shortest time between the initial teaser trailer release and its eventual premiere in theaters, which will be in July.

Thor exercising to get back into shape after Endgame is a great touch as the showcase of this record. The fact the trailer took as long as it did to release might’ve played a key factor in its success, as many were questioning if it might arrive at all. Plus, the arrival of Mighty Thor was also something that pulled people’s attention in, as many were excited to find out just how we might meet her and the various merchandise built up quite a bit of momentum. Who knows how strong the pull might be once we get our first look at Christian Bale‘s Gorr the God Butcher.

  • New ‘Doctor Strange’ Tie-In Ad for Tide Includes Reference to Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 2’

New ‘Doctor Strange’ Tie-In Ad for Tide Includes Reference to Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 2’

It’s not uncommon for big blockbuster films to get tie-in ads nowadays, as a way to not only promote the film but also a way for brands to get some attention. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness seemingly has one with Tide, where Wong is on the hunt for Strange’s Levitation cape after spilling his Tuna Melt on it. Yet, what stands out is actually the small inclusion that fans of Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man might quite enjoy.

If you look closely, you can see a food truck with the name “Joe’s Pizza Parlor.” Fans of Spider-Man 2 might instantly recognize that as the place where Peter worked while trying to balance his time as a web-slinging vigilante. Its inclusion is a great little detail and hopefully means we might get a few Spider-Man references in the upcoming film with Raimi in the director’s chair.

Spider-Man fans are petitioning for Tobey Maguire to get a pizza-based cameo in Far from Home

Bruce Campbell joined the project in an unknown role. So, we might definitely expect some fun references to his other projects like Evil Dead, especially with the horror vibes. Now that Tobey Maguire returned to the role of Spider-Man, there have been theories that perhaps he even returns in the upcoming film, especially with Raimi in the directing chair. It seems like the perfect opportunity to have them reunite. Of course, the multiverse is vast and who knows what direction the director took with the project, as there are many more opportunities in how they approach the project. We’ll still have to wait just a little longer before we can watch it.

  • ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’s Goats Were Originally Pitched for 2011’s ‘Thor’

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’s Goats Were Originally Pitched for 2011’s ‘Thor’

Here’s an interesting reveal by writer Zack Stentz. One of the three writers behind the original 2011 Thor has taken to Twitter to share some thoughts on the new Thor: Love and Thunder trailer. In his tweet, he highlighted that the goats we see in the trailer and across the promotional material were originally pitched as part of the 2011 version of the film. He not only shares about the insanity that Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjostr were pretty much Thor’s travel meal in the original mythology, but also that Kevin Feige and his team were a bit uncertain when they included it in the original pitch.

This reveal says a lot about how much has changed since the Marvel Cinematic Universe just started. Not only did Taika Waititi take the character of Thor in such an outlandish direction that they’re way more open to tackling creative storylines, but the executives also loosened up quite a bit. To be fair, what we also have to keep in mind is that there’s a pre-Captain America: Civil War era where even Feige and his team were supervised by Isaac Perlmutter and his infamous committee.

Once he was able to break free from Perlmutter and fully work with Disney directly. This way Marvel Studios became a separate entity from Marvel TV and Marvel, but also gave him way more freedom. It’s the only reason we actually are seeing more diversity in their projects. Black Widow was a film that only got a release this late in the game due to that era and most projects of Phase 3 were already in some form of production at the time. So, if they continue to see success with wilder ideas, we may also see them continue to try out new things moving forward.

  • Thor’s Final Armor in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Could Be Made of Zeus’ Golden Lightning Bolts

Thor’s Final Armor in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Could Be Made of Zeus’ Golden Lightning Bolts

The first trailer has finally dropped for Thor: Love and Thunder. It has included quite a few teases of what we can expect in the next film, which will be the first time a franchise has gotten a fourth entry. While everyone is probably talking about our first look at Mighty Thor, what stood out, even more, is that we got the confirmation that the film includes the Olympians. The gold-loving gods stand out quite a bit in the trailer and considering we got a few leaked designs for Thor’s armor, there’s a potential connection between that design and these newly introduced gods.

In the trailer, we have a brief shot of Thor already wearing a golden-blue armor. It appears early on, but there is actually a second one that was leaked with some of the Hallmark merchandise. In it, we can clearly see Thor wielding even more gold on his armor and even a new helmet. So, it raises the question of how he gets what may be his final armor before facing off against the main threat of the film, Gorr the God Butcher. Especially as there was no sight of it in the trailer.

    Image

What also stands out is that Russell Crowe’s Zeus is seemingly wielding lightning made of pure gold. It seems like it is his main weapon of choice and perhaps works similar to Thor’s weapons, as they are used to channel his thunder-based abilities. He is even wearing golden armor as he addresses his people in the trailer and has a statue made of the same material standing proudly at his entrance. So, it’s safe to say that these gods love their gold.

Gorr’s arrival seems imminent and he’ll turn the entire planet into a Greek tragedy. We do briefly see what looks like Korg, Thor, and maybe even Valkyrie visiting to warn them about the threat. After they leave, it may be too late and the gods are butchered. Our heroes quickly return only to see the remnants of the great kingdom they saw before. Some of the survivors may take the weapon of their leader and strengthen Thor’s armor as a way for him to carry on and battle Gorr united by the gods they’ve befriended in their travels.

So, it seems likely that his final armor may be strengthened by Zeus’ weapons that aid him in channeling his abilities even more. Stormbreaker remains his main weapon, but could also get an upgrade. Still, if he is going to face off against someone as powerful as Gorr, he might need to use as much power as he can to take him down. A plate armor strengthened by a fellow god’s golden lightning bolts could be exactly what he needs to even the playing field to take down the biggest threat to deities across the galaxy.
