EXCLUSIVE: Olga Kurylenko Talks Future Taskmaster Appearances

Regardless of whether you liked the character or not, one thing that rings true with Taskmaster in Black Widow is that the character was underutilized. There’s a lot left to be desired with what they gave us but the character does make it out in the end which leaves the door open for any future appearances. We asked Antonia Dreykov herself, Olga Kurylenko what she thought of a possible Taskmaster come back down the road and she gave a surprisingly candid answer about it.

Unfortunately, I don’t know if I’ll be returning. It’s not up to me. You can ask Marvel that [laughs]. If I was, obviously what would be great is to know more about the character because she was just kind of introduced here. There was no time and no story to develop. And the thing is there’s so much to explore about the character. There’s a lot to do with it .

Taskmaster in the comics is a fan-favorite villain who not only brings a lot of killer action with him but also a lot of attitudes. Black Widow reinvented Taskmaster in a pretty big way, one that distances itself from the comics to serve what the writers envisioned for the film’s larger sinister Red Room plot. Kurylenko shared with us what discussions she had with director Cate Shortland on how to portray such a silent character.

With Cate, we discussed the backstory and all the pain Antonia might have gone through. Things we know, things we don’t know yet. It was about the fact that behind that armor and killing machine, there is a human being. A human who was made to be bad. She wasn’t born bad. She’s manipulated, abused, gone through trauma – both physical and psychological. It was the conflict within one person. We talked about her soul because she does have one. When she’s in that armor, you don’t think there isn’t. That’s what was fascinating.

EXLCUSIVE: Olga Kurylenko Reveals How Much of Taskmaster In ‘Black Widow’ Was Her and How They Kept The Reveal a Secret

Black Widow threw fans a curveball when O-T Fagbenle‘s Mason, a character everyone believed to be Taskmaster for more than a year, wasn’t the person behind the mask. The film revealed that it was Antonia Dreykov, played by the wonderful Olga Kurylenko, who was behind the killing machine. With a secret that was constantly pried by many in the years leading up to the film’s release, it stands to reason that a curious fan myself would ask Kurylenko in lengths Marvel went through to keep the role a secret. So, I did when I had the opportunity to interview her.

It started with me being on set where no one could see me [laughs]. I’ve never gone through that so it was quite interesting. I remember walking out… there was this umbrella created that had fabric hanging all the way to the ground and I had to be underneath. It was quite fun. It started with that and most of the time, I couldn’t really walk around and I had to sit in my tent and trailer. Obviously, I wasn’t allowed to talk about it understandably. That’s what I did. Even my mother didn’t know. She only found out a few days ago. The movie was supposed to come out last year so she saw the trailer and went, “Oh Olga, there’s this super cool movie coming out. I wanna see it! Can we go together?” I went, “What movie?” She goes, “Black Widow.”

Because the character stays masked for the majority of the film, I also wondered just how much of the Taskmaster we see in the film is Kurylenko in the costume. Her answer wasn’t surprising as the role was more physical and stunt-oriented than it was character-driven. However, it was nice to know that she was in the suit for the film’s last stretch.

The fighting and the scenes that came after my reveal, I got to do. Obviously, it’s such a complex character with so many abilities so I had to be doubled. There was more than one person involved because the character can so many different things from all specialties. It’s great because the character can do anything.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Used VFX Teams from Previous Raimi and TASM Films

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Used VFX Teams from Previous Raimi and TASM Films

As we steadily approach the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the anticipation grows for any new information or details regarding the upcoming film. The biggest question on everyone’s mind is whether or not the film will indeed adapt a “Live-Action” Spider-Verse storyline that will reintroduce Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as the Spider-Men from their respective universes. Along with that rumor, there are also murmurs that the film could potentially bring in tow their fellow crewmates from the previous films such as Kirsten Dunst, Emma Stone, and many of the film’s previous villains to form a multiversal Sinister Six. While those rumors remain to be confirmed until we get an official confirmation with either a poster or a trailer, there are clues that could certainly make that rumor mill spin even faster.

Thanks to our sources, we are able to confirm that the upcoming installment in the MCU Spider-Man saga is incorporating VFX teams that previously worked on the visual effects for both the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy and TASM films. This development is interesting for a number of reasons. First and foremost, they’ll be joining forces with the multiple teams that have worked on the effects for the previous MCU Spider-Man installations. Not only that, but Marvel Studios and Sony seem to be holding no punches when it comes to the supervisors that will helm the post-production for this project as a number of their VFX Supervisors were also the supervisors to some of the groundbreaking visual effects for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Having the VFX teams that worked on the previous Spider-Man franchises could be a huge indicator as to which direction this film could potentially go. If Maguire and Garfield are indeed involved in the film, then who better to have work on the VFX involving them than the people who actually worked on them all those years ago. They understand the character’s unique movements, styles, and micro-expressions better than anyone. Putting to use those models and animations that were used to bring to life the Raimi and TASM Spider-Men is a great way to differentiate the 3 Spider-Men from each other from a stylistic point of view. And even if this film doesn’t include the Spider-Verse storyline, there are scenes from both of these film franchises that have stood the test of time in terms of visual effects and it would be great to see those techniques and styles applied to better enhance the Spider-Man experience in this film. Just look at the train scene from Spider-Man 2 or the visuals from The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, which arguably had the greatest web-swinging sequence of the three iterations. Having this group of individuals work together for a film is absolutely outstanding and it’s certainly seeming like Spider-Man: No Way Home is setting itself up to be one of the most visually stunning films for Phase 4 and we can’t wait to see what this film has in store when it hits theaters in December.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios Casting a Young Lead for ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios Casting a Young Lead for ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is preparing to start filming in the UK this July and while most of the buzz has been around Kathryn Newton stepping in as Cassie Lang and Jonathan Majors being cast as Kang, we can now share that Marvel Studios is looking to add another major character to the mix. The studio is currently looking for a young female of any ethnicity, 9-12, to play an unnamed lead character in the film.

The character is described as a 10-year old and the studio is looking for a young actress with singing, dancing and comedic chops. It’s unlikely that they’re looking for a young actress to play a younger Cassie Lang as Abby Ryder Fortson still fits the description, so unless she is unavailable, this is for a new character set to play a major role in the 2023 release.

    ‘El Muerto’

    Premiere: TBD

In late April 2022, a trade report announced that Sony was going ahead with a new feature film focusing on El Muerto, a Marvel character that has appeared in less than half a dozen comic issues.

Bad Bunny, who is set to star in Sony’s Bullet Train, will be playing the titular character Juan-Carlos Sanchez. Little more is known about the project since it seems to be in very, very early development.

    • Bad Bunny as Juan-Carlos Sanchez / El Muerto
  • ‘Madame Web’

    ‘Madame Web’

    Premiere: February 16, 2024

Sony executive Palak Patel was hired to oversee the development of the Madame Web project and hired director S.J. Clarkson as well as the team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to write the film. Although there’s documentation on the project dating back to April 2019 it was only in early 2022 that it became clear that this wasn’t to be another feature trapped in pre-production hell.

In February 2022 it was reported that Dakota Johnson was in talks to play the titular role, something that was seemingly confirmed just a couple of days after the initial rumors started spreading. A few weeks later it was Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney who was added to the cast in an, as of then, undisclosed role. Both stars hinted at a possible Marvel Studios involvement in the project at different times (here and here), something that hasn’t been confirmed.

The movie was given an official release date in April 2022, with Sony planning on it hitting theaters in July 2023.

Late May and early June 2022 gave fans a few more casting announcements as Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Isabela Merced (Sicario: Day of the Soldado), and Tahar Rahim (The Serpent) all joined the project. Emma Roberts (American Horror Story), Mike Epps (The Upshaws), Adam Scott (Severance), and Zosia Mamet (Girls) soon followed.

With production on the feature film already underway in July 2022, something confirmed by Sweeney, set photos hinted at an early 2000s plot timeframe.

In what is already seen as business as usual ever since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic began, Sony pushed the Madame Web release back a few months, from the initial July 17 to October 6, 2023. The movie’s premiere was once again shifted on September 2022, with the new date being set as February 16, 2024.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Jon Favreau Returning for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

EXCLUSIVE: Jon Favreau Returning for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

After having appeared as one of the more prominent mentor characters for Peter Parker throughout his series of solo films, we can exclusively confirm that Jon Favreau will indeed be returning as Happy Hogan for Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was almost certain that Favreau would be returning alongside the main cast of the previous two films, but due to COVID-19 and filming schedules, there were always doubts regarding his return to the franchise’s next installment. The full details regarding his role in this film remain unknown. However, he could certainly have a considerable supporting role similar to that of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Happy Hogan had a rather interesting side story in Far From Home, where both Happy and Aunt May (played by Marisa Tomei) developed a relationship that was played for laughs. At the end of the film, when confronted by Peter about the situation, Happy confessed that he actually did have feelings for Aunt May and believed that they were dating, while Aunt May only described the relationship as a “summer fling.”

It’ll be interesting to see how the dynamic between the two characters develops as well as knowing how Happy will react to the events of the post-credit scene in the last film when Spider-Man identity was outed to the world. Nevertheless, we can always count on Happy to be the man with a plan and we can’t wait to see more of him when Spider-Man: no Way Home hits theaters this coming Christmas season.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘Succession’ Actor Arian Moayed Cast in ‘Spider-Man 3’

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Succession’ Actor Arian Moayed Cast in ‘Spider-Man 3’

Murphy’s Multiverse has learned that Iranian born American actor/writer/director Arian Moayed was cast in Spider-Man 3. Moayed is probably most known for his role in 2 seasons of the harrowing HBO family business drama Succession. In the series, he gives a compelling performance as Kendall Roy’s old friend Stewy Hosseini.

Details on his role in Spider-Man 3 are slim at this time though I was able to learn he is portraying a detective and has already filmed some scenes.

Moayed was previously nominated for a Tony award for his role in Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. Other appearances on television and film include Madame Secretary, Rock the Kasbah, Elementary, The Blacklist, and Law and Order.

Mr. Moayed recently wrote and directed the thriller The Accidental Wolf for streaming service Topic and will appear on the upcoming Netflix limited series Inventing Anna, which is expected in 2021.

  • What We Heard This Week: The Villain of ‘INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2’

What We Heard This Week: The Villain of ‘INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2’

The complicated notion of the Multiverse has long been a staple in high-concept fiction but in the world of comic book films, it was only until the last couple of years that the idea became a lucrative prospect, when it culminated in the box-office and critical success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The film was Sony’s rare diamond in a consistent streak of roughs so it came as no surprise that a sequel was put in the works shortly after. Since then, we haven’t heard much about the sequel until this week when a source tipped us off to the identity of one of the sequel’s key baddies: obscure Spider-Man and Daredevil villain, The Spot.

For the uninitiated, The Spot is one of those obscure Spidey villains who occasionally showed up here and there to terrorize the likes of Spidey and DD with his goofy yet powerful abilities. The Spot has the ability to access and manipulate portals in any space (drawn as spots in the comics) which he uses to transport himself or any part of his body. He commonly uses it to have his foes punch their own faces or to assault them from all directions but it has oftentimes been used for more sinister purposes. In Mark Waid’s Daredevil run, the Spot appeared in a key role, wherein his power gets harnessed by another villain called Coyote, who then uses it to operate a global human trafficking empire by kidnapping victims remotely. The science behind his powers is never fully explained but they mimic some of Cloak’s ability to access a different dimension. The potential of his abilities is also beyond what’s been depicted so far, not to mention he has close ties with Kingpin so he’s absolutely a perfect fit should this be true.

As always our What We Heard This Week reports, take this with a grain of salt. We’re working with a new source on this and have yet to confirm this with another source as of this writing but thought it was exciting enough to share with you guys. We certainly believe that a character with ties to Spider-Man who has powers like The Spot makes so much sense to incorporate in the Spider-Verse sequel. Production on the sequel began last summer and it is expected to hit theaters on October 7, 2022.

  • First ‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ Set Photos Confirm the Return of Hot Thor and a Thunderstrike Costume

First ‘THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER’ Set Photos Confirm the Return of Hot Thor and a Thunderstrike Costume

There’s been no shortage of Thor: Love and Thunder production news these past few weeks as stars of the film traveled to Australia to commence production. Today, the very first set photos of the highly anticipated fourth film have arrived revealing the titular character’s return to his superhero physique and some of his Guardians of the Galaxy cohorts. Check out the images courtesy of the Daily Mail.

So as you can see, Hot Thor is back which will surely draw some very interesting reactions from people who grew to love the chubby version of the character we last saw in Avengers: Endgame. It must be Casual Friday for the God of Thunder because in one photo he’s donning a totally 80’s look with his white tank top tucked into his blue jeans and in another, he’s sporting a sleeveless leather jacket that is clearly a nod to the Marvel Comics character Thuderstrike. The fact that he’s going casual while Star-Lord and the rest of the Guardians are in their space suits already makes it hilarious. It’s also nice to see Karen Gillan and Sean Gunn suit up in their respective costumes. Hopefully, we see an actual shot of Natalie Portman as Thor in the next coming weeks too.
