  • Jodie Turner-Smith Has NOT Joined ‘Kraven the Hunter’ as Calypso

Jodie Turner-Smith Has NOT Joined ‘Kraven the Hunter’ as Calypso

It was back in July when first rumors made their way online that actress Jodie Turner-Smith would take on the role of Calypso Ezil in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff, Kraven the Hunter. It turns out those rumors were not true, as The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit confirmed that she has not joined the cast after running the story of Russell Crowe joining the project. It’s uncertain if they are still actively looking to find an actress to take on the role of Calypso, but it was pointed out most of the parts will consist of Kraven’s extended family.

Calypso is a voodoo priestess who had a lot of joy in manipulating Kraven and was one of the causes that led to his eventual suicide. Her powers were derived from sacrificing her younger sister which gave her the ability to control Curt Conners. She was one of the few people that almost managed to kill Spider-Man, but he managed to survive and take her out. Yet, she was seemingly dead until she would make a return in trying to resurrect Kraven and ended up facing off against Daredevil.

  • Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Film Adds America Ferrera

Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Film Adds America Ferrera

Margot Robbie has found her co-star for the upcoming Barbie film, as Deadline has just announced that America Ferrera has joined the production that also features Ryan Gosling. Greta Gerwig is hired to direct the film that’ll bring the classic doll toy to life on the silver screen. There was no word what her role is, as Warner Bros. continues to keep the production’s plot a secret but there are teases it won’t be the typical story you might expect featuring a plastic doll.

It’s being produced under LuckyChap Entertainments with Robbie also having a producing role. Mattel’s Robbie Brenner is also involved alongside Heyday Films’ David Heyman. Ferrera has been quite busy, as she is currently set to make her feature directorial debut with an adaptation of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. She also recently worked on a few episodes of Netflix’s Latinx dramedy Gentefied.

It’ll be interesting to see how they tackle a project focused on Barbie, as many adaptations on popular toy lines have taken a strong meta-narrative direction. Great Gerwig‘s involvement certainly is a promising addition that may push the project into a new direction that will certainly surprise us. So, we’ll have to wait and see once production finally starts.

  • Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Adds Russell Crowe

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Adds Russell Crowe

The upcoming Kraven the Hunter film is starting to prepare for production, as it is currently eyeing a release on January 13th of 2023. As such, it seems the production has finally started expanding its cast and the first to join is no other than Maximus himself, Russell Crowe. His role is still unannounced, but it seems that most of the cast will consist of Kraven’s family members, which might flesh out the character in curious ways. It may be a hint that we’ll explore most of the character’s childhood and find out what turned him into the greatest hunter there ever was.

J.C. Chandor will direct the upcoming film that is based on a screenplay by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk. Long-time Spider-Man producer Avi Arad is also returning alongside Matt Tolmach. The details still remain uncertain about the project and just how they aim to tackle the character’s origin story. It continues Sony’s focus on expanding Spider-Man‘s franchise without the titular wall-crawler. So, who knows if they might embrace a crossover with the Sinister Six.

We’re still awaiting the release of Morbius which has been confusing viewers on its continuity due to the trailer including references from across the Spider-Man franchises. They have also recently started work on a Madame Web-focused film, which is still a curious addition to their offerings. Though, it is the same company that wanted to explore an Aunt May origin story.

  • ‘Mission: Impossible 7’s Budget Ballooned to $290M Due to COVID

‘Mission: Impossible 7’s Budget Ballooned to $290M Due to COVID

Just recently, we learned that the Mission: Impossible sequels were delayed into 2023 and 2024. As production was affected strongly by COVID, they want to ensure that everything goes smoothly. in a new report by Variety, it was revealed that the seventh entry in the franchise had faced quite the issue with its production budget, as it seemingly has ballooned up to $290M, which is quite a bit higher than what the studio’s had expected, especially with the last entry, 2018’s Fallout having a production budget of around $190M.

What influenced this was that it had to stop and start production seven times since it initially started back in February 2020. An action sequence that took place during the Carnival of Venice occurred when Northern Italy went into lockdown. They tried to dodge to Rome but the cases spiked there too. So, it’s no surprise that the budget continued to rise at a rapid rate. Variety points out that the production had faced the issue over and over again due to the borderless virus chasing them down even when they started productions in Poland or the United Arab Emirates.

It wouldn’t be too surprising that other projects were hit in a similar manner, as many were forced to shut down. The only issue was that this production budget led to co-producer Skydance meeting its cap from a financial contributions side, which led to Tom Cruise a director Christopher McQuarrie having to add the missing $50M. We’ll see how that may have potentially affected the product once it releases in theaters next year. For now, Paramount is hoping that the insurance may help ease the burden.

  • New ‘Lightyear’ Trailer Reveals Emperor Zurg’s Redesign

New ‘Lightyear’ Trailer Reveals Emperor Zurg’s Redesign

The new Lightyear trailer has finally dropped which gives us a look at a reinvented look of our favorite Toy Story character. Pixar tackles the character’s story as Chris Evans’ Buzz Lightyear heads out into space after being marooned on a planet. In his travels, he’ll face various dangers which include the return of a familiar villainous face.

In the trailer, he briefly mentions that they are being hunted by a robot that might be familiar to fans of Toy Story 2, as he wields a triple-barreled weapon which many will instantly recognize as the go-to weapon for his arch-rival Emperor Zurg.

    Image

The design looks great while still keeping elements from the original like his eyes. He noticeably no longer has his cape, but it would seem out of place in what looks like an inorganic world. There was a great sense of adventure and danger for our hero, and it felt very adult for what you usually expect with Pixar’s offerings. So, we’re quite excited to check their upcoming film, which hopefully won’t just end on Disney+ again.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Nominated for Visual Effects Oscar

‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Nominated for Visual Effects Oscar

The Oscar nominations have finally arrived and it looks like Marvel Studios once again remains a strong contender in the Visual Effects department, as Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings alongside Spider-Man: No Way Home was nominated. They join other projects like Dune, Free Guy, and No Time To Die in the category. Sadly, they once again did not receive any other nominations, while Denis Villeneuve’s latest film was quite the favorite at this year’s announcements including Visual Effects, Best Film, Film Editing, and more.

Marvel tends to land mainly in this category, which is a shame as there are many talented people involved with these projects. Black Panther was the first Marvel Studios project to beat the odds and even land a nomination for Best Picture, but that was quite an uncommon occurrence. It’s great to see other projects like Free Guy also land a nomination, which had some stunning visual effects playing on classic video game tropes. At this point, it’s anyone’s game but Dune or No Time to Die seems like the more likely choice to get chosen by the committee. Until the event takes place, all bets are open and we’ll see if the Marvel Studios projects can nab an Oscar this year.

  • IMAX Hosting Early ‘The Batman’ Fan Screenings

IMAX Hosting Early ‘The Batman’ Fan Screenings

Want to see The Batman a few days early? Well, it seems that IMAX will be hosting a few early fan screenings of the upcoming film that’ll premiere on March 1st rather than the actual March 4th premier. The tickets will go online tomorrow and it looks like it’ll potentially give us our first look at just how popular the upcoming film will be, which currently is predicted to make at least $300M+ at the international box office over its opening weekend. Plus, it’s great for fans getting the chance to see it early that have already been patiently waiting for the Dark Knight’s return to theaters.

It’s great to see the opportunity being offered, though it’s not specified yet where and when these will be made available. As such, we might have to count on quite a waiting list trying to access any tickets once they are made available. Robert Pattinson takes on the role of the Caped Crusader and the trailers are promising a darker take on the character we’ve seen on screen so far, mostly has he has given in to his darkest desires. It’ll be interesting to see just how Matt Reeves realizes his take on the character, but hopefully, people won’t start spoiling after the screening’s release.

  • Charlie Cox Wants To Do More Crossovers in the MCU

Charlie Cox Wants To Do More Crossovers in the MCU

Charlie Cox’s return as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home teased a potential future in which The Man Without Fear is free to pop up anywhere in the MCU in the future and that potential has fans buzzing and theorizing what’s next for the character. Rumors have him showing up everywhere the next couple of years, from Moon Knight to She-Hulk to Armor Wars, and hope continues to build that he’ll be back in a larger capacity in the next Spider-Man film.

For the better part of a year, Cox had to dissemble a bit as he was peppered with questions about his return to the role, but now that the cat is out of the bag, he’s able to give some more insight on his return, as he recently did in an interview with Australia’s Supanova Comic Con. When asked about how he hoped the future of the character would look, Cox replied:

I feel so lucky to have been cast in that role and it is the gift that keeps on giving. I loved every single minute of making the show. To be asked to come back and to be involved in any capacity is absolutely thrilling to me. And I hope…I don’t want to sound greedy…but I hope I get to do loads more. I hope I get to be involved way, way more for many years. I hope it never ends. I hope it gets to the point where people are like, “You’re too old to be playing this part.” I don’t know what their plans are but my hope is that I get to do as much as I’m allowed to do and to be involved.

An excited Cox continued on by explaining that having Daredevil enter the MCU has opened up a world full of possibilities where he can meet up with other characters:

The one thing that being in the MCU allows that we couldn’t really do with the Netflix stuff is that I can now interact with other MCU characters. So that would be really cool. Crossovers is the thing I would like to do next. I don’t know what that looks like and I don’t know what they’re planning and all that kinda stuff but, you know, there are some really interesting stories there that I would like to, I would love for the character to explore.

As Cox said, the Netflix-verse offered very little in terms of crossovers as the studio only had the rights to a select group of characters. Now that he’s entered into the MCU, let’s hope Cox gets his wish to play the character as long as he wants and get started on those crossovers immediately.

  • Vin Diesel Started Recording His Groot Lines for an Upcoming MCU Project

Vin Diesel Started Recording His Groot Lines for an Upcoming MCU Project

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently busy filming, as James Gunn returns to finish the trilogy he started back in 2014. The story will see the ragtag team continue on their quest after whatever may happen between them and Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder. We still don’t know what the future has in store for this intergalactic team, but we know we’ll be getting a lot more of Groot. Vin Diesel has shared his excitement on exactly that as he shared a video on his Instagram as he returns to record voicing the character.

Curiously, he didn’t confirm what project this recording is for, as there are currently four projects that we can expect to see Groot return. The before-mentioned Love and Thunder, the animated I Am Groot Disney+ series, the third Guardians film, and its Holiday Special. It wouldn’t be surprising if he is recording all the projects in one sitting, especially as the next Thor entry won’t release until July. Plus, the animated series is confirmed to release this year.

It’s sweet he is sharing the video not only highlighting that he started recording for the character, but also giving a shoutout to his history of recording the voices of characters that say very little, like his time on The Iron Giant. It’s strange to think that he ended up tackling a similar role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which still opens up the possibility for him to join a project in a different capacity at some point in the future. Yet, it’s hard to beat just how iconic he made Groot since he first appeared in 2014.

  • FIRST LOOK: New ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Merch Hints at Classic Comic Design

FIRST LOOK: New ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Merch Hints at Classic Comic Design

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is just a few more months away, as Marvel Studios has been busy getting their merchandise out for the upcoming film. We’ve seen a strong focus on the film’s upcoming supporting cast and the tease of the many Strange variants we’ll see in the film. One of them is even strongly inspired by the Defender run of the character. A new piece of merchandise may have revealed another classic comic costume.

A new line from the Titan Hero Series Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch. What stands out is that Strange’s design includes a very familiar blue design that fans of Greg Pak and Emma RíosDoctor Strange: Season One might be familiar with:

For those not familiar, Doctor Strange: Season One was a retelling of the iconic character’s origins. Pak and Ríos gave new life to help new readers catch up on the Sorcerer Supreme’s early beginnings. The cover art featured a blue design that seems to be an inspiration for the upcoming film’s take on the character.

It’s great to see the films pull in more designs from the comics, and it’s certainly a deep cut to pull from. There’s still a chance that the version in this merchandise isn’t the one we’ve been following since the first Doctor Strange film, as we already know it’ll feature a variety of Variants. So, we’ll see if we get a better look once the next trailer releases.
