RUMOR: Disney Exploring a New Post-Sequels ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy

The future of Star Wars has been somewhat of a mess. The sequel trilogies, which kicked off with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, weren’t met with the fanfare that Disney may have hoped for. While the first entry did welcome a generation back into one of the most popular franchises, its two sequels managed to sour the experience. Luckily, Disney+’s launch alongside The Mandalorian opened a new gateway for fans of the originals in a series that felt like a true embrace of what made the franchise a classic. As some projects are getting announced and suddenly shelved, it seems that some plans exist for a new post-Sequel era trilogy.

On the podcast, The Ringer, former Vanity Fair reporter Joanna Robinson revealed that there is some interest in tackling a new trilogy that takes place after The Rise of Skywalker. She even hinted that Disney is actively looking into establishing it and there are even some first hints at what the story might be about. It seems that the interest is to revive the Jedi Order, one that avoids the “absolutes” of its earlier incarnation to allow people attachment. Surprisingly, that concept is currently being explored through the eyes of Grogu on The Mandalorian and its recent spinoff.

It wouldn’t be too surprising that Disney wants to return the franchise to cinemas, especially as projects like Rogue Squadron seemingly lost any steam shortly after its announcement. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have been spearheading the current iteration on Disney+. So, they might be likely candidates to potentially tackle a new trilogy, especially given Favreau‘s experience in the cinematic landscape. The franchise might benefit from unshackling itself from the nostalgia that tied down the sequel trilogy to take a completely new direction and explore a very different galaxy, far far away.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu Joins Margot Robbie in ‘Barbie’

‘Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu Joins Margot Robbie in ‘Barbie’

The cast of the Barbie film continues to grow, as in the latest Hollywood Reporter Heat Vision blog it was announced that Simu Liu has joined the production. He’ll join the Margot Robbie-led project that is from the minds of Greta Gerwig – who is also directing the project – and Noah Baumbach. Ryan Gosling is also part of the cast and his casting is another sign of how Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings catapulted him to the top of casting lists. He’s not the only addition, as just the other day we heard that America Ferrera is also joining the film’s cast.

This film is still continuing to blow away expectations, as a film based on the popular doll seems like something that would get rushed out. Barbie isn’t a stranger to cheap productions either, as there are many children-focused films that released throughout the years – and my step-sister forced me to watch with her when she was younger. Given how popular the product is, it seems like there’s a big hope to not only bank on the brand but potentially even create a film that defies expectations similar to how the Lego Movie used a meta-narrative to surprise viewers at the time. There’s still some time before it starts production, but it might become a project to keep an eye out for.

  • Paramount’s ‘Harbinger’ Adaptation Adds Director Wes Ball

Paramount’s ‘Harbinger’ Adaptation Adds Director Wes Ball

It looks like a project that has been in development hell for some time has finally picked up some steam, as Deadline just reported that Maze Runner filmmaker Wes Ball has joined the adaptation of Harbinger. Paramount Pictures is eyeing an adaptation of the Valiant Comic of the same name that follows a group of teenagers with powers and their conflict with a corporation exploiting their abilities. The script will be written by Andrew Lanham, who recently worked on Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi. It’s part of Ball’s first-look deal with Paramount and his production company Oddball Entertainment.

For some time, the project was being developed by Sony with Dylan O’Brien and Noah Centineo being targeted for titular roles. Yet, it seems that there is currently no talent involved with the projects. It’s unclear when Ball may tackle this project, as he is currently busy developing a reboot of Planet of the Apes for Disney, but the script is being worked on with Josh Friedman involved.

Originally, our own Charles Murphy broke the news on Sony’s original plans for the project back in 2018, where Justin Tipping was eyed to helm the project. It was part of a five-picture deal with Neil Moritz’s Original Film Studio that was eyeing the adaptation of Valiant Comics. So far, the only one realized is still Vin Diesel‘s luke-warm adaptation of Bloodshot. Here’s hoping the project can finally pick up the pace to bring the David Lapham and Jim Shooter series that started back in 1992 for 41 issues. We’ll keep an eye out for further updates.

  • New DCEU Promo Teaser Offers First Full Look at ‘Black Adam’s Justice Society of America

New DCEU Promo Teaser Offers First Full Look at ‘Black Adam’s Justice Society of America

It was during the first DC Fandome when Dwayne Johnson confirmed that his upcoming film, Black Adam, would feature the Justice Society of America. The team was one of the first superhero teams to come together in the golden age of comics. This film will finally be their big-screen debut after multiple TV appearances. The upcoming roster will consist of Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone and a new promo gave us our first official look at their costumes.

The first reveal is of the film’s take on Hawkman, as he extends his wings to fully reveal his gold and maroon color scheme. The character is quite accurate to his comic counterpart with the winged helmet and all. Now we just need to see his iconic mace.

The next one is the team’s veteran member, Doctor Fate. He is the DCEU’s equivalent to the Sorcerer Supreme. Perhaps the most interesting detail of the suit is that the Helmet of Fate appears to not have any eye slits. Maybe they’ll work in some details during post-production, possibly having them glow yellow, but it’s a curious update on the design.

Atom Smasher is here barreling through the streets in his iconic comic-accurate look, featuring his blue and yellow color scheme with a bronze belt. The mask features white eyes, something we don’t tend to see too often in comic book adaptions, but it’ll surely please fans.

The final look is of Quintessa Swindels‘ Cyclone, the granddaughter of the first Red Tornado who possesses wind-like abilities. The character is sporting a green armored dress look, reminiscent of her comic counterparts.

The designs look great and we can’t wait to see them in action. In the teaser, it does seem like Doctor Fate is trying to convince Black Adam of joining their side and may have offered our first glimpse at the film’s direction. It is currently set to hit theaters on July 29th, 2022.

  • Charlie Cox Reveals a Cut 2003 ‘Daredevil Reference From ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Charlie Cox Reveals a Cut 2003 ‘Daredevil Reference From ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Spider-Man: No Way Home saw the big return of Charlie Cox in the role of Matt Murdock. It was an exhilarating moment for many, as his time on the Netflix series redefined some of our expectations from what it means to watch a Marvel TV show. His return was met with a lot of love, and it seems that they even wanted to include a reference to 2003’s Daredevil film featuring Ben Affleck. The reasoning was quite simple, Jon Favreau who takes on the role of Happy Hogan in the MCU once played Murdock’s partner-in-crime, Foggy Nelson. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he revealed one of their shots included a cute reference to the actor’s time as the character.

I don’t think they used it, but we added a little Easter egg where he goes, ‘Yeah, I’m a little foggy on how that happened’ or something. That was a cool moment for me to meet him and chat about all that stuff.

    Charlie Cox

I’m sad it didn’t make it into the film, but the scene already had some great moments that it would be probably get lost in the shuffle. Plus, there’s always a chance to revisit it in the future, as it would be great for Favreau to meet the new incarnation of Foggy Nelson, which might once again be Elden Henson. I would love to see the confrontation between the two, especially as they have some unconventional nicknames with Foggy and Happy – one can dream.

  • Disney+ to Add ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ This Summer

Disney+ to Add ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ This Summer

It seems we may have missed a little detail from yesterday’s Disney Earning all. while most o our focus was primarily on the impressive growth that Disney+ had in the last quarter of 2021. Yet, there was also a brief mention of the fact by Disney CEO that Bob Chapek confirmed the upcoming release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will land on Disney+ in the summer. Of course, the film won’t release until May of this year but it’s great to have a confirmation that it will release on the streaming service in a similar time window that we saw with Eternals or Shang-Chi. The confirmation was shared by @azalben on Twitter.

Disney has generally focused on shortening the release window between their projects, as they are not only trying to bank on the box office success but also growing their internal streaming service. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will likely be filled to the brim with easter eggs and Disney+ will be the best place to start looking for what one might’ve missed while watching it in theaters.

Disney+ has become the home for all of Disney’s IPs but during the Earnings Call, Chapek hinted that they want to also include the Spider-Man films, but Sony’s dealings are going to keep them from doing so. We know Spider-Man: No Way Home is heading to Starz first and Sony does have a deal that their projects will eventually land on Disney+, but there’s still no clear time window when we can expect it. So, for now, we’ll have to wait for further confirmation.

  • Robert Pattinson is All In for a ‘The Batman’ Trilogy

Robert Pattinson is All In for a ‘The Batman’ Trilogy

We’re only a few more weeks away from the release of The Batman and the potential of exploring a new franchise surrounding the new iteration of the character. We’ve already heard about potential spinoffs that explore the different corners of this noir take on the classic character. In a new exclusive interview with Fandango, Robert Pattinson was asked about his thoughts on tackling the character long-term and it seems he’s already ready to tackle a trilogy.

I’ve talked to Matt [Reeves] about the idea of doing a trilogy and that would be wonderful. I really, really enjoyed the process and it’s such a fun character to play.

    Robert Pattinson

We’re certainly all in as well to join a new Batman trilogy, especially if they are taking a Cinematic Universe approach to this take on the character. There are many different corners that can be explored, especially with the unique take teased in the trailers. So, we’ll see what it might have in store for us once the film releases and how it may open the window to future storylines.

  • ‘Uncharted’s Ruben Fleischer Working on a ‘Jak and Daxter’ Adaptation

‘Uncharted’s Ruben Fleischer Working on a ‘Jak and Daxter’ Adaptation

Ruben Fleischer has been busy promoting his upcoming release of Uncharted, but it seems like he isn’t quite done with the world do PlayStation adaptations. In an interview with Digital Trends, he has revealed that he is working on also adapting another popular franchise. It looks like he has set his eyes on potentially bringing Naughty Dog’s Jak and Daxter to life.

I’m actually working on Jak and Daxter, a version of that, for PlayStation, which I think would be really cool to bring to life.

    Ruben Fleischer

Naughty Dog has had its hand in a variety of franchises, and Jak and Daxter might be one of the more curious ones to try and adapt in live-action. Uncharted mostly focused on hyperrealism while the franchise featuring a talking otter and weasel hybrid, Daxter, had a more fantastical and cartoony design. So, an adaptation might be a bit more troubling and potentially more expensive venture.

It’s not quite as cartoony as Crash Bandicoot, especially as later entries beyond the Precursor Legacy took a more adult route. So, they might skip most of the origin and go directly to the storylines from the second or third entries. Of course, it may still take some time as the director might get busy with Uncharted sequels if they end up a success.

  • Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’ Adds Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and More

Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’ Adds Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and More

Zack Snyder has made quite the home for himself at Netflix with Army of The Dead spawning multiple spin-offs and a sequel. The director has since expanded his work for the streamer, as he has begun developing Rebel Moon, a sci-fi film on a planet threatened by Regent Balisarius with only a few warriors to protect it. The project has only added Sophia Boutella in the leading role and not much was known about the project. Luckily, Snyder has now announced more of the cast, which will feature some familiar faces from his past works.

Joining the cast of Rebel Moon will be Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, and Sky Yang with more casting set to be announced soon. It’s unknown just who each of them will be playing as plot and character details still remain under wraps. With the casting announcement came some new concept art that could offer us our first look at the tyrannical Regent along with what looks to be a few of the warriors in the film.

Snyder is best known for films like Watchmen and 300, as well as kicking off the DC Extended Universe with Man of Steel. He recently was able to finish the work he could never finish with Zack Snyder’s Justice League. No release date for the film has been set just yet as production is set to begin sometime in April until August. Rebel Moon will be the second franchise Snyder hopes to build at the streamer with what looks like a rich new universe for him to explore and build.

  • ‘The Power of the Dog’s Kodi Smit-McPhee Passed on Playing ‘Kraven the Hunter’s Chameleon

‘The Power of the Dog’s Kodi Smit-McPhee Passed on Playing ‘Kraven the Hunter’s Chameleon

It looks like today’s a day all in the name of Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff, Kraven the Hunter. Not only did Russell Crowe join the production, but we also got a confirmation that the rumor of actress Jodie Turner-Smith joining the production was sadly untrue. Now, it seems that an “almost” casting was revealed, as Jeff Sneider shared the news that Kodi Smit-McPhee has seemingly passed on the role of Chameleon, who was rumored to appear in the film back in June. It seems that it was due to scheduling conflicts that he couldn’t further pursue the role.

It sadly happens quite frequently that some actors can’t tackle various roles due to projects overlapping. We’ll see if we get an announcement soon about who ended up taking the role. The character also is a fitting addition, as the initial article teased that most of the cast will consist of the titular character’s family. Well, Chameleon is actually his half-brother named Dmitri Smerdyakov. It’ll be interesting to see if he might end up as the main antagonist of the story, as both brothers end up in an ongoing conflict. We’ll see if we get more news in the near future.
