  • Peter Billingsley Finds His ‘A Christmas Story’ Sequel Family

Peter Billingsley Finds His ‘A Christmas Story’ Sequel Family

The upcoming legacy sequel A Christmas Story Christmas sees the return of Peter Billingsley in the role of Ralphie. The story follows an adult version of the character, who is trying to give his children that special Christmas he had all that time ago. While we recently learned that a few of the cast are returning, it looks like the film has found his family as Erinn Hayes, River Drosche, and Julianna Layne join the production as his wife and two kids.

It’s still cute to see this Christmas classic return and it’ll be interesting to see if his children will end up as the main protagonists of this story similar to how Billingsley was back in the day. Of course, they may echo quite a few iconic moments, such as the pink bunny suit. The only trouble with these legacy sequels lies in the fact that they tend to get overshadowed by nostalgia. So, here’s hoping the classic can pave its own path without being weighed down by the original.

  • China Once Again Welcomes Superhero Films Back With ‘The Batman’ Approved to Release

China Once Again Welcomes Superhero Films Back With ‘The Batman’ Approved to Release

The Batman truly is an international star, as The Hollywood Reporter revealed the film has been signed off to release in the Chinese market. It’s the first to do so in quite some time. Matt Reeves‘ upcoming film will find its way into the Eastern market on March 18th. It’ll follow a release in Taiwan and South Korea on March 2nd. The biggest advantage for the release of this film in this market lies in that there’s no HBO Max simultaneous release, as the country is infamous for piracy. So far, the only other Chinese approved releases are Death on the Nile, the 2018 Woody Allen film A Rainy Day in New York, and Uncharted.

Many other releases were facing some trouble finding their way to the market with 2021 only seeing a handful making their way East. Spider-Man: No Way Home was actually hinted at getting releases in the market for some time, but it looks like this article confirms that it simply never got approved. There probably were just rumblings, but it’s not like the film had to rely on that market as it continued to break records during its ongoing release.

The Batman is promising a 3-hour noir-inspired take on the iconic DC character and has a good chance to be another release to redefine how powerful superhero films are at the box office. It’s unclear what surprises Reeves‘ rendition of the character might have in store for us, but we’re only a few more weeks away until it finally releases in theaters.

  • Tom Holland’s ‘Uncharted’ Eyeing a $30M+ Opening Weekend

Tom Holland’s ‘Uncharted’ Eyeing a $30M+ Opening Weekend

While everyone’s been busy talking about the Peacemaker finale and the release of Horizon: Forbidden West, cinemas were also filling up again for Tom Holland‘s next release, Uncharted. While it didn’t quite convince our very own Hunter Radesi, whose review you can read by clicking here, it looks like the film is still off to a decent start at the domestic box office. It took in $3.7M in its Thursday previews and is on its way towards a $30M+ opening weekend.

The film was already released last week in select international markets to a strong start with $22M. That was only in 15 smaller markets and we’re still anticipating the numbers from its current state internationally. The origin story of the popular Naughty Dog franchise takes a different approach, as director Ruben Fleischer brought together Holland as the character of Nathan Drake alongside Mark Wahlberg as Victor Sullivan.

It’s not the strongest opening for a big blockbuster film, and we’ll see if it’ll perform stronger internationally. Video game releases have had the tendency to have stronger openings in global markets, but the bigger question is how strong the legs are for this project. You’d think a Holland-led project would dominate this shortly after the release of Spider-Man, but it might be a bigger testament to just how strong the Marvel character’s grip is on the box office.

  • REVIEW: ‘Uncharted’ – Please, Just Play the Games

REVIEW: ‘Uncharted’ – Please, Just Play the Games

On December 21, 2015, Sony and Naughty Dog released a short advertisement in preparation for the upcoming debut of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, clocking in at just over thirty seconds. The slow-motion spot features the game’s intrepid protagonist lunging forward toward a flipping gold coin just beyond his reach, begging to be caught. As the scene around him erupts into chaos, a voice-over beings. “Nathan Drake. That two-bit thief, risking it all for some piece of treasure.” As the camera continues to pan, however, we see that the floor of this ancient, loot-filled room has begun to collapse, and Nate’s brother Sam is falling through it. “I guess that’s how they know me, how they’ll remember me.” With this comes the big reveal; Nate was never reaching for the coin. He only wants to save his brother, a choice he’s made time and time again. “But that’s not who I am.”

These thirty seconds are the epitome of the Uncharted franchise. A hero who must choose between honor and glory, lost ancient treasure, massive set pieces filled with pulse-pounding action, and a surprising amount of heart woven between the seams of it all. The games have had such an impact on fans because of their ability to engage the player in Drake’s adventures, on both an emotional and intellectual level. They are cinematic escapades you can take part in, with every aforementioned characteristic merging together to create a fully-formed, well-rounded experience. Drama flows into excitement, which in turn becomes triumph. Even the worst of the video game installments managed to tap this narrative oil well, and reap the rewards that come with competent storytelling. That advertisement, titled Man Behind the Treasure, was able to encompass all of this in a mere half-minute runtime. So why, with a $120 million budget and multiple years worth of creative turnovers and rewrites, was Ruben Fleischer‘s film adaptation not able to do it in two hours?

The answer is simple. Uncharted, the long-awaited movie, does not understand why people loved the franchise in the first place. Or, at the very least, it doesn’t understand how to execute the game’s ideas in a way that means anything. To be honest, it’s not the worst adventure film that’s ever been made. It’s no National Treasure, and it certainly pales in comparison to the great Raiders of the Lost Ark, but it’s not unwatchable. It offers a few charming moments from a cast with decent chemistry, and it’s sporadic set pieces are exhilarating enough. Tom Holland actually makes for a pretty charming Nate, and newcomer Sophia Ali makes a case for herself as the dynamic Chloe Frazer. Mark Wahlberg is horribly miscast as Sully, but he bounces off the younger cast well enough to keep his presence entertaining. Antonio Banderas and Tati Gabrielle, especially Tati Gabrielle, are able to keep the danger alive as actually-pretty-good villains. If this were a review for a generic action flick, it may even be getting higher marks. Unfortunately, it carries the Uncharted name on it’s title card, which makes it’s status as serviceably generic all the more depressing.

The main problems with the film stem from two conflicting arguments. Firstly, and most importantly, the movie seems to adapt all the wrong parts of it’s namesake. Uncharted seems to think that all audiences wanted translated from console to cinema was the franchise’s signature flair. Blanketed over the one-note plotline are dressings designed to make viewers go, “oh, they did the Uncharted thing!” There are live-action recreations of iconic moments, plenty of witty comments, several rants about global history, double-crossing, a plethora of “craps”, knowing cameos, and even a bar named ‘Kitty Got Wet’ (if you know, you know). Nate’s relationship with his long-lost brother Sam is the crux of the film, which attempts to paint the protagonist in the same big-hearted light as the games, even if it fails to add the same intrigue. It’s mostly all there. Yet, somehow, every bit of it feels so passionless. The heart that strings all the charm together is simply not there. It’s like Sony, and it does feel like Sony directed this movie themselves, had all the tools necessary to create a complex mosaic, but opted instead to pump out a paint-by-the-numbers and hope nobody noticed. Sure, the final image looks like Uncharted, but it just doesn’t have the same soul.

When it does do Uncharted things, it doesn’t even commit to them hard enough for it to matter. Aside from an admittedly solid final sequence, most of the small things that compliment the series’ larger attributes find themselves replaced by forgettable, cheaper alternatives. The movie borrows an entire scene directly from Uncharted 4, but sets it in the middle of urban New York City as opposed to it’s original Italian countryside. Where the games’ scores are known for using slightly more exotic compositions, the film waits until the very end to do anything unique or exciting with it’s music. Until that point, the soundtrack might as well have been playing over literally any other action film released in the past ten years. Ultimately, fans are probably better off just staying home and replaying their favorite sequences on whichever PlayStation they may possess. And if anyone unfamiliar with Uncharted watched the movie, liked it, and came here hoping for validation, they’d only find a recommendation to, well – just play the games instead. They feel, and look, more like a big-budget film anyway.

  • ‘The Batman’ Cast Listing Hints at Barry Keoghan’s Mysterious Role

‘The Batman’ Cast Listing Hints at Barry Keoghan’s Mysterious Role

It was back in 2020 when Warner Bros. and DC brought the very first DC Fandome event to screens all around the world, highlighting anything and everything DC Comics. The Batman took center stage at this event with the very first trailer. It was during Fandome that we found out Eternals Barry Keoghan had joined the film. Yet there was no word on who he might end up playing. It looks like a new casting list may have added some weight to a rumor going around on who he might be playing.

If you want to go into The Batman spoiler-free, then please do not continue.

When he was first added to the cast, he was listed as Stanley Merkel, a GCPD officer. It seemed like a surprisingly small role for the well-established actor. It wasn’t until the rumors started making the rounds that there is more to Keoghan‘s role. A new cast listing for the film has appeared and the actor is included in a new role simply known as “Unseen Arkham Prisoner”. The fact he would play an “unseen” character further makes you wonder who he might be playing.

Now, there’s more to this listing that may further add to who he might be playing. Mike Marino, who did the prosthetic work for The Penguin is also listed as doing work for Keoghan‘s character, which would be weird considering he’s listed as unseen. Why go through the work to design his look if you’re not going to use it on screen.

Recent rumors have swirled suggesting that he is actually playing the Joker, who has already been locked away by this new version of Batman. They could be lifting elements from The Killing Joke when early in his career, the Caped Crusader stopped the Red Hood gang at Ace Chemicals with their red herring falling into a vat of chemicals. That person turned out to be the Joker.

  • New Figure Provides a Detailed Look at Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor from ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

New Figure Provides a Detailed Look at Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor from ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Marvel Studios continues to get beat to the punch in terms of costume reveals for their upcoming films. Recently, early looks at collectible figures have given fans detailed looks at the costumes of characters from upcoming films such as Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Now, a set of images has hit the internet, courtesy of Mephistu, that provides a very detailed look at Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor costume from the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.

While this isn’t the first time fans have had a chance to glimpse Jane’s new look, the collectible, from S.H. Figuarts, is incredibly detailed even if the photos are a bit lo-res. The poseable figure not only comes with Mjlonir and a very cool looking blue lightning effect, it also seems to capture the moment in which Jane becomes Thor and Mjolnir is reforged! Set photos taken early in the film’s production seemed to tease the exact moment captured by the figure.

Thor: Love and Thunder, which is now scheduled for a July 8, 2022 release, will see Natalie Portman return as Foster and team up with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor to take on Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale.

  • ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Trailer Dominated Social Media Post-Super Bowl

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Trailer Dominated Social Media Post-Super Bowl

The Super Bowl was quite the night for sports fans and media fans. We got some new movie and TV trailers to highlight what is heading our way in the year, such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It looks like it created quite the online buzz. Deadline shared a new statistic on how the various trailers have performed within a 24-hour window. RelishMix provided the data and took a 24-hour viral analysis between Facebook Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. It looks like the latest Marvel film was the winner followed by Jurassic World: Dominion.

To offer some comparison, Doctor Strange has garnered five times the amount that Black Widow did during the Super Bowl before the pandemic hit. Though it garnered 143M global online views, which is behind Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Endgame‘s 355.5M and 289M respectively. Even Dominion tripled its numbers from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom back in 2018. Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power though garnered an impressive 257M views and held the all-time post-game traffic for a trailer dropped during the Super Bowl.

Moon Knight is quite low surprisingly, but there’s a chance that it simply was overshadowed by the cinematic offering. It’s the drawback of multiple trailers releasing from the same franchise, as the Disney+ series overall has been performing quite impressively so far. All eyes were on the massive tease from the Doctor Strange trailer and Amazon was smart to offer its very first full trailer during the night. As such, all new trailer releases were the ones to dominate the night while shorter spots probably gained most of their viewership during the event directly. Still, really interesting to see this development.

  • Kate McKinnon is Latest Star to Join ‘Barbie’

Kate McKinnon is Latest Star to Join ‘Barbie’

There must be something about Barbie, as the upcoming live-action adaptation has found another actress to join the project. We just recently reported that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsSimu Liu has joined the project and now it seems like former Ghostbuster Kate McKinnon is also on board. Mattel is putting together quite the cast for a unique take on the classic Barbie doll toy. As of now, the cast consists of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrara, the previously-mentioned Liu, and now McKinnon. Greta Gerwig is attached to direct Sadly, no word on who the latest addition will play in the film.

Gerwig‘s filmography would certainly hint at a very different take on the classic Barbie doll, which isn’t a stranger to film adaptations. The cast is certainly becoming a promising addition to hint at just how invested the team behind this project is. It’ll be interesting to see what roles the actors will take on and how they might tackle the project from a modern perspective. Not much is known about the project, which has the potential to reach similar highs as The Lego Movie did back when it was released. We’ll certainly be keeping an eye out who else might end up joining, as anything is possible at this rate.

  • John Cena Joins ‘Looney Tunes’ Spinoff ‘Coyote vs. Acme’

John Cena Joins ‘Looney Tunes’ Spinoff ‘Coyote vs. Acme’

It looks like that ain’t all folks, as a new Looney Tunes animated hybrid project is in development titled Coyote vs. Acme. Dave Green will direct the film based on The New Yorker humor article of the same name by Ian Frazier. It’ll follow Wile E. Coyote who tries to sue ACME Corporation after a few too many broken purchases. The project has now cast Peacemaker actor John Cena as the former boss of Coyote’s new lawyer.

Chris DeFaria is producing the project alongside James Gunn through their Two Monkeys, A Goat and Another, Dead, Monkey Productions. It’ll be based on a screenplay by Samy Burch and may offer a different take on the popular cartoon franchise. It looks like Warner Bros. is all-in on their relationship with Gunn and ready to also explore some non-DC-related projects.

The concept sounds like a fun departure from previous Looney Tunes projects and might be the one to kick off a new series of films that put the popular cartoon characters in very “human” situations. The Looney Tunes Show did something similar to quite some success and even reinvented Lola Bunny to give her a unique personality. It’ll be interesting to see what the project has to offer and who else might join the cast.

  • ‘A Quiet Place 3’ to Release in 2025

‘A Quiet Place 3’ to Release in 2025

ViacomCBS – who has now rebranded to Paramount – is currently busy announcing its future plans and just throwing one piece of news out after another. Among their many iconic IPs is the horror franchise A Quiet Place, which John Krasinski kicked off and is slowly evolving into its own cinematic universe. The first spinoff, which just added Pig director Michael Sarnosky is eyeing a release in 2023, but it looks like the official third entry will be heading to theaters in 2025. Sadly, no further details were given.

It’ll be interesting to see how exactly the spinoff might connect to the upcoming third entry. We know that Krasinski is set to return alongside Emily Blunt in the next entry of the franchise, which is theorized to take place before the events of the original film. So, it may build up some connections that may pay off in the release of the third entry that further expands the world that suddenly fell silent.
